At E3 I approached a person that I’ve seen working at a few different Nintendo tours in the past and asked them if Nintendo is planning a Wii U tour. The response was that Nintendo is indeed planning to show off the new hardware and that a tour will be kicking off in New York City before slowly moving west.
I then later found a different Nintendo rep that I have also seen at Nintendo tours and asked the same question. This individual told me that yes, Nintendo is planning a tour but it will be more so for members of the media.
Finally, upon my arrival home from E3 last Friday, I received an e-mail from Nintendo. Apparently, for being such a valued Club Nintendo member, I was invited to a special Wii U preview event in New York City. You can see a copy of the e-mail below.

So is this Club Nintendo event the rumored tour? I’m not really sure. Maybe the event wasn’t for media after all and only for valued Club Nintendo members. I guess only time will tell if the general public will get a chance to get their hands on the Wii U prior to launch. I’d say the odds are very good.
