38 Studios, the developer behind February’s Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning went under just last month. We covered the studio’s final moments extensively, and if one thing is clear, it’s that the ending of that company was extremely bitter. However, Project Copernicus, which was an MMO that was to take place in the universe of Amalur, was still under development at the studio when the developer went bankrupt.
An unnamed source felt that such a nasty, well-publicized end to the company wasn’t what it deserved to be remembered by, and instead leaked a trailer for the never-to-be-completed Amalur MMO.
Admittedly, there isn’t very much to judge the trailer by: a few fly-overs of locations, a couple of quick “gameplay” glances – which really amount to just characters either swinging a weapon, casting a spell, or simply standing on a landmark – and a voiceover that talks about life, death, and rebirth through the Well of Souls.
Simply using this, it’s difficult to tell what Project Copernicus, simply named Kingdoms of Amalur could have been, but it’s the final note for the studio: the hollow, ringing note of potential. Maybe you can’t tell from first glance whether it would have taken the MMO world by storm, but it had the potential to do so, and that’s why it’s a fitting end to the 38 Studios legacy. The company had the talent, and they could have done remarkable things.
We’re not likely to ever know now, though. If you want to see the trailer for yourself, look no farther:
