In the hallowed pages of the Guinness Book of World Records reside some pretty amazing accomplishments. No, I’m not talking about the dude with creepy long fingernails or the heaviest tumor. No, I mean the good stuff like best selling games of all time and fastest completion of Protoss Level 7 in the original Starcraft (wow… some of these are specific). Runescape has been included for some time now, and it’s deemed the world’s most popular free to play MMORPG by the esteemed panel of Guinness Gurus. Now, Jagex’s fan favorite title is celebrating an enormous milestone, as the 2,000,000th registered player account has been created.
Released in 2001, the title is played by gamers in over 150 countries, and continues to provide weekly updates keeping those that have invested in the experience over the past 11 years engaged. One of the things that makes the game so easy to love is that it’s browser-based, lowering the bar to entry significantly. Even those of us in the Cult of Jobs can join in. Additionally, since it launched over a decade ago, you can run it on computers with as little as 512MB of RAM and a 1GHz processor. Pretty much, your computer can be as old as Runescape itself and you’ll be fine.
If you are a player (new or old) you can enjoy the current in-game celebration of the milestone, which will be taking place over the next three days. A demon with 200,000,000 hit points has emerged (OK… now that’s dedication to a theme). He can only be defeated with a weapon created for the event. Should players manage to slay the very healthy beast, they’ll earn a unique item. Get killin’.
Back in the real world, you can participate in the festivities over at a new microsite. There, you’ll find an interactive timeline and a collection of community videos. There’s also a neat infographic that we’ve included below.
Whether you’re a decade-long member of the Runescape community or are just finding out about the game for the first time, there’s no better time to jump in and find out (or remind yourself) what the fuss is all about. Congratulations on the success, Jagex! Here’s to 200,000,000 more!
