I love the potential the PlayStation Vita holds, but it just hasn’t had the games to support it consistently since its release. On the other hand, the PlayStation 3 is home to a slew of exclusives, including several coming out this holiday season. And now comes good news that the Vita will share in the stable of Sony titles.
Sony has announced at Gamescom the new “Cross Buy” promotion that will be part of many upcoming offering in the PlayStation family. As was the similar case with Sound Shapes, Cross Buy games that are purchased for the PlayStation 3 will include the Vita version for free (and vice versa). The titles confirmed so far to take advantage are Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time (which unfortunately has now been pushed to 2013), PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault.
Though no other games have been mentioned as part of the program, it appears other publishers are already considering offering a free Vita version with their upcoming games. EA has said they are looking at this as an option for Need for Speed: Most Wanted, which would certainly push me towards a definite PlayStation 3 purchase.
As a Vita owner myself, I am extremely pleased with this news. I had already planned on purchasing Battle Royale and Sly Cooper, and the opportunity to take them on the go is an appealing incentive. From previous experience, both titles play well on the handheld and I could see myself playing them on the smaller screen on countless train and plane rides. Hopefully this will also convince a few more PlayStation 3 owners to pick up the Vita, as two games for the price of one on so many occasions is not a deal to pass up.
