Sometimes, being late to the party works to your advantage. Sony’s recent onslaught of high-definition collections of their game franchises has proven this, with the budget prices and value-added enhancements making them a great purchase for newcomers. The new additions, such as an HD visual upgrade and trophy support, also makes them enticing to series veterans like myself. Recent entries into Sony’s HD collection cannon include inFamous, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank and God of War, all of which delivered a stellar package. Hoping to keep the momentum going, Sony has just been confirmed that Killzone, the futuristic FPS trilogy by Guerrilla Games, is next in line for a re-release. For those who have yet to discover this series, consider this the perfect opportunity.
Simply titled Killzone Trilogy, this collection will include all three of the main series games, two of which are currently available separately on the Playstation 3. The first Killzone was released on the Playstation 2 in 2004 and fared quite well, despite receiving mixed reviews due to graphical and other technical issues. A gritty first-person shooter set in the hostile era of space colonization, the game focused on humanity’s fight against the Helghast, a hostile sub-human race. The series really hit its stride with the 2009 release of Killzone 2 on the Playstation 3, which brought both amazing technical performance and deep, challenging multiplayer. Killzone 3 was subsequently released in 2011 and the qualities of the second installment definitely carried over.
The Killzone Trilogy, which is due for release on October 24, 2012, will include trophy support and all of the map packs for Killzone 2 and Killzone 3. The main selling point will be a remastered 720p version of the first game, however it is unclear if any enhancements will be made to the other two. It is also rumored that the first Killzone will be released as a stand-alone title on the Playstation Network, however this has yet to be officially confirmed.
