When BioWare first released the original Baldur’s Gate on PC and Mac back in 1998, it became one of the most popular and enduring RPGSs of its day. With a strong legacy and a dedicated fan base, it seems that time has not completely dulled its appeal. Earlier in 2012, it was announced that developer Overhaul Games and publisher Atari were joining forces to re-release the game as Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition. Boasting revamped gameplay, a fresh coat of paint and support for both iOS and Android platforms, this is shaping up to be one of the must-have downloadable games of the fall season. The original release date was expected to be September 18, however it has just been confirmed that the debut has been pushed back until late November.

Despite the minor setback, there is still plenty of good news to report about the Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition. Included will be a remastered version of both the original Baldur’s Gate and the expansion, Tales of the Sword Coast. Both games will boast a much higher resolution, as well as support for multiple viewing angles to suit the preference of the player. Additional enhancements include improve multiplayer matchmaking, a higher level cap and the inclusion of the class system that was introduced in Baldur’s Gate II: Shadows of AmnThe PC version will incorporate the standard controls, however the iOS and Android versions will feature a dramatically different gameplay engine to suit the requirements of the platform.

The reasons for the delay in releasing Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition boil down to timing and a need to improve the game. Also on board for the project is Wizards of the Coast, who are licensing some of their gameplay elements for this edition, and extra time is needed for fine-tuning. There are also numerous bugs that need to be fixed, making it difficult to meet their initial deadline. While this news will definitely disappoint some, it is often better that developers take their time to resolve any issues prior to launch. While Overhaul will be patching the game and supporting it post-launch, the delay was deemed necessary given the surprising popularity and demand for this game. The new release date is on November 30, 2012.
