While it may have been slow in coming out, there is no denying that the official DLC expansions for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim have given us ample reason to keep coming back. The “Dawnguard” expansion involved a battle between a vampire clan and a human clan whose purpose is to stop them, and you had the choice of fighting on either side. In “Hearthfire”, the element of home building was introduced and you could quite literally build the house of your dreams. Some of the new content has fulfilled fan requests, such as the addition of the crossbow weapon in “Dawnguard”, and it appears that Bethesda is doing the same with the next DLC expansion. If you wanted to return to Morrowwind and soar in the heavens on the back of a dragon, your wish will soon be granted.

Bethesda has just confirmed today that the next DLC add-on for Skyrim will be called “Dragonborn”, and it will take place in the land of Morrowind. This is a move that is sure to please long-time Elder Scrolls fans. The plot centers around your efforts to stop the evil Dragon Beast, the first Dragonboarn who turned on his own kind by killing dragons rather than protecting them. He is returning and looking to wreak havoc upon the land, and you are tasked with ultimately taking him down. Story-wise, it offers more depth and lore than the previous expansions, and it is shaping up to be the most dramatic and substantial add-on yet. To help build the anticipation, Bethesda has also released a trailer for “Dragonborn”, which shows an array of new enemies, locations, and perhaps best of all, the ability to ride on a dragon. This is something that was part of a latter mission in Skyrim, but it appears to have been fleshed out as a gameplay element here.

Skyrim: Dragonborn will be released on December 4, 2012 for the Xbox 360, at the price of 1600 Microsoft Points ($20). The release date and price for the PC has yet to be confirmed. Unfortunately, as was the case with the previous DLC expansions, Dragonborn will not be immediately available for the Playstation 3. Bethesda has cited performance issues as the reason behind the extra content being withheld, and there is no confirmed time period in which this might change. One can only hope that this is resolved by the time a “Game of the Year” edition is released, which seems inevitable given the success of the game.
