If you keep up with games people on the internet, you’ve probably heard of Candy Box, a browser-based game that uses ASCII art. The game was a surprise hit, being described as a Facebook game without all the Facebook paraphernalia. Players gained candies every second, then used those candies as a currency as the game expanded and became surprisingly complex.
Inspired by that game, Doublespeak Games has released A Dark Room. The game starts off with placing players in a dark cold room with dead fire. The experience expands outwards in really exciting and interesting ways, asking for player patience and assuming curiosity. It’s easily one of the more interesting game experiences I’ve had all year.
