You know those emergency “flash flood warnings” that interrupt your television viewing experience with the ever soothing sound combination of nails on a chalkboard and a car alarm? Well, they may be making their way to your video game console in the not so distant future if one government official gets his way.

As it turns out, the state of New York is currently testing an Xbox based emergency alert system. New York State Deputy CIO, Rico Singleton, who seems to be spearheading the push, believes that the majority of kids these days play video games instead of watching TV or listening to the radio — mediums which already have emergency alert systems built in.

The goal is to tap into the online networks already established by companies like Microsoft and Nintendo to more effectively reach this video game obsessed demographic when natural or man made disasters occur.

Okay, serious hat off for a moment. Where the hell are the parents? In the other room snorting cocaine off of dead hookers? “Mom! Dad! The Xbox just told me that terrorists attacked an airport! … Wait, never mind, that’s just a level in Modern Warfare 2.”

I personally find it funny to hear a government type sounding like they miss the “good old days when kids rotted their brains out watching TV, and stayed glued to the raido for a chance to record a new song for their  mix tape.”

In response to a question thrown his way on Twitter, Geoff Keighley, host of the 7th annual Video Game Awards, revealed that there are about ten unannounced games we can expect to see for the first time at VGA 09. One of these is a new shooter by 2K Games.

The teaser for this new game (shown below) opens with several shots of what appears to be the city of Dubai in a war torn state. The narrative comes from the perspective of a stranded soldier, who mentions a failed evacuation attempt and cites a high number of casualties as the camera pans by several individuals hanging from highway street lights. We possibly get a glimpse of the character we’ll be playing as in the final seconds of the clip.

My guess is, anything big enough to hang you from a street light is definitly not human. Could this be a sci-fi type battle set in the future? You can catch the event live on Spike TV December 12th. Don’t forget to get your voting in before then!

In a contrasting string of commercials, Pringles stack their chip against bagged brand competitors. The premise is simple — “not every chip gets you to the crunch.”

And as you’ll see in the Silent Hill video game scenario below, when you finally do get to the “crunch”, a strip teasing Lara Croft will be waiting. The “squelching” non-crunch counterpart is, well, not as entertaining. Enjoy.

Jon Christensen, Founder of Slash Gamer, and Jim Steyer, Common Sense Media CEO, recently appeared on the FOX morning show “Fox & Friends” to give their stance on the uber violent “terrorist” activities in Modern Warfare 2. The segment was titled “A game that lets you play as a terrorist?” and pitted Jon as the defender of video game content, against Jim, the defender of our precious and highly impressionable children. Here are the highlights:

Jim: The main issue with violent video games, including very well made made games like COD. There’s no question there’s correlation between violent games and kids…

Fox Host: You bring a violent game into a house with an 8 year old, nothing to stop that kid from playing it and becoming a terrorist…

Jon: That’s ridiculous! You’re not a terrorist! It’s pixelated violence! You’re not a terrorist!

There are a few gaming sites out there bashing Jon for losing his train of thought early in the segment and closing his eyes towards the end as he stood his ground defending simulated violence in video games. I’ve known Jon personally for several years now, and what the asshats who are ridiculing him don’t know is that Fox contacted him that same day with just a few hours notice. In addition to Jon never having been on television before, the segment was filmed at 3:30 AM his time, which meant he wasn’t exactly “well rested” before going on air.

Those of you that want to point the finger at Jon, calling him an embarrassment to gamers, should take a hard look in the mirror. He made the appearance in an effort to defend the medium we love from those who would rather reinforce the notion that it breeds future terrorists. Who cares if he didn’t have the on-screen composure of the great Tom Brokaw? His intentions were pure and his heart was in the right place. I applaud him for answering the call … of duty, and you should too.

It seems that the Chris Farley DirecTV advertisement did more that just piss a bunch of people off – it also inspired the team at LandlineTV to drive the point home with a set of parody advertisements of their own. Why stop at Chris Farley when you can utilize the power of even more dead celebs?

Landline included the following comment with their reveal:

After testing the boundaries with their Chris Farley spot, DirecTV wrangles more famous people from beyond the grave to be in commercials.

I found that very amusing. As for the Chris Farley DirecTV ad, when I first saw it I’ll admit I was turned off, but I found out later that the version I saw on TV wasn’t the full version of the spot.

The full spot closes with David Spade saying “it never gets old.” That line, as short as it is, reaffirms the fact that although he just spewed out a bunch of DirecTV sales mumbo-jumbo he doesn’t get tired of watching his friend perform “fat guy in a little coat” — without that line the commercial takes on a whole new meaning.

In something as touchy as this, you would think that DirecTV would have the common sense to not use the spot outside of its full unedited version. What do you think? Does the edit make the difference or do you think the commercial is unacceptable from the start.

Last night’s Southpark episode featured Cartman as Rock Band lead singer proving that, like the baby in the E-Trade commercial, he too has been blessed with the gift of golden pipes.

His stunning rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” is backed up by Kenny and Kyle on Rock Band guitar and drums. I must warn you though, this cover is very catchy and may get stuck in your head for a day or two. You’ve been warned.

We reported a rumor regarding the possibility of third person gameplay in Infinity Ward’s upcoming shooter Modern Warfare 2 less than an hour ago. The main supporting elements at that time consisted of supposed leaked in game video and a screen capture of what appeared to be a game mode selection screen.

In addition to the above, we’d like to now add a promotional email from G4TV’s X-Play to the mix, and ultimately a confirmation from Infinity Ward community manager, Robert Bowling, that seals the deal.

A recent PR email sent to Ripten from G4TV teasing Modern Warfare 2 Exclusives on X-Play, the promotional copy promises a look at MW2 “never before seen Co-op play from two wildly different perspectives”. And just when it looked like G4TV was going to be on the hook for spilling the beans, Infinity Ward’s Community Manager, Robert Bowling, came to the rescue by confirming the game’s third person mode outright.

According to Bowling, Modern Warfare 2 will in fact contain a third person mode available in private matches only. “It’s not something you can toggle on and off in ANY game,” Once initiated, it will force that view on all players in that private match until the next match. He added that this will be “another cool way to play the game,” and that you will “still have the option to play gametypes normal as well.”

That said, you can catch what will surely be a pretty in-depth preview of Modern Warfare 2 complete with team interviews and looks at several gameplay modes (and their perspectives) on G4TV’s X-Play at 6:30PM on G4TV or G4TV.com.

The “anything you can do I can do better” competition between the Sony PlayStation 3 and the Microsoft Xbox 360 for the title of ”Master Swiss Army Knife Console King Toaster Oven” continues as Sony announced their partnership with Netflix on Monday. Remember when video game consoles didn’t cost 500 dollars and just played video games? I do.

Starting next month, PS3 owners (who are also Netflix subscribers) will be able to instantly stream thousands of movies and TV shows from the Netflix catalog to through their PS3. The only stipulation with the service out of the gate, is that PS3 owners will need to have a free Netflix-provided Blu-ray disc (available from netflix.com/ps3) in their console to utilize said service. This may be something that is eventually phased out by a future firmware update, but that’s purely speculation at this point.

Sure all these “extras” are nice to have, but its getting to the point where console manufacturers are going to need their own “Jimmy Football” and a slew of infomercials to justify the cost and explain the “jack of all trades”  functionality. In an age where social networking and word economy reign supreme, it’s hard to find a rumor that didn’t originate or spread through Twitter. Geoff Keighley, host of Spike’s GameTrailers TV, knows this, and recently took to his Twitter to stir the rumor mill regarding a brand new LucasArts IP to be announced on GTTV this weekend.

“LucasArts will announce a brand-new original game on this week’s GTTV – with first footage. More details soon.” tweets Keighley. Keighley, you’re such a tease! Come on, give us more than that. A name, a genre, a platform- I’ll even accept a 32 x 18 screenshot! But until Thursday, when GTTV airs (at 12:30AM) I’ll just pray that you were lying about it being original. I just want a new Grim Fandango, LucasArts.

Violence and video games is a topic almost as old as time itself, and we’re all getting tired of hearing people discuss whether or not violent video games are a stimulant for violence & aggression. While the entire gaming community will probably answer that query with a resounding, unanimous “NO”, many analysts and therapists alike disagree. The comedic, critical duo of Penn & Teller recently tackled this topic in the latest episode of Showtime’s Penn & Teller: Bullshit!, and the outcomes of the so-called “investigation” might surprise you.

The first part of the episode is embedded above, courtesy of Kotaku, and the second & third parts are embedded after the jump. Everyone’s favorite Floridian makes an appearance in the episode, but unfortunately, they made him out to some sort of game-hating misanthrope, rather than the forthright, but misguided man he seemed to be when I heard him speak at SGC last week. While I enjoyed the episode, and thought they made a lot of good points, I could’ve done without the crying kid at the end. Luckily, no one at his age probably watches or even gets Showtime, or the kid would be teased for life.

A while back there was a rumor making its way around the internet saying that Megan Fox may play Lara Croft in the next Tomb Raider movie, as it was an origin story that called for a younger actress. This rumor finally made its way to Angelina Jolie and she is none too pleased.

It seems Jolie thinks that Fox steals a lot of things from her, like her style and her tattoos. I don’t think that she has any valid reason to be upset, as she couldn’t play Lara Croft in an origin story anyway. Why does she even give a crap?

Keeping in line with other game-to-film adaptations, Hitman was pretty bad. It was a clumsy mess and Timothy Olyphant looked really goofy with a shaved head. Nevertheless, it made a killing, so a writer has been hired to pen the sequel.

Kyle Ward, the screenwriter who seems to be writing the upcoming film adaptation of Kane & Lynch, will also be writing the Hitman sequel. If any of you know any actual hitmen, you may be able to save us from the Hitman sequel and Kane & Lynch with one simple phone call.

Ryan Reynolds, the actor funnyman that most recently played Wade “Deadpool” Wilson in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, doesn’t play video games. He thinks they’re a waste of time.

I don’t really play video games. Is there a way to waste more f—ing time? The Internet’s enough. The last videogame I played was Ms. Pacman.

You know what else is a waste of time, Mr. Reynolds? Watching Wolverine, The Proposal, Chaos Theory, The Amityville Horror, Just Friends, Waiting…, Blade: Trinity, and Van Wilder. I regret all of the hours I spent watching some of those, so it must be pretty terrible knowing that you spent years of your life making them.

But it could be worse! You could’ve been playing videogames!

In all seriousness, though, what’s so damn productive about watching a movie? Nothing, you condescending dick.

Straight out of E3 today is yet another video for The Beatles: Rock Band, but this time with gameplay. The trailer for the game gives us a good look at some of the visual changes added to The Beatles: Rock Band, namely the psychedelic background visuals, addition of 3-part harmonies, and slight changes to the note boards.

One of the things that kind of irks me about the trailer is the game’s rendition of “Get Back”. It’s a lot different than the one I’m used to, but it still takes place atop the headquarters of Apple Corps. I’m sure I’ll get used to it eventually, but I’d much prefer the version with McCartney’s higher-pitched vocals. Oh, and the trailer’s gorgeous too!

There’s really no other way to describe this cinematic, other than to say it’s absolutely fantastic. It’s beautiful. From the style, to the animation, to the music, to the surreal ending, it’s absolutely gorgeous, and it hurts my brain to even think of how much work went into making this on Harmonix’s part. I challenge you all to find a better cinematic than this, because I simply can’t find one.

But enough of me singing it’s praises. Although I knock on Activision for their use of the Guitar Hero franchise, I can’t wait until September 9th, when The Beatles: Rock Band comes out. Although it’s only 45 Beatles songs, as one of the greatest bands ever, I’m sure I’ll have an insane amount of fun with the game. You can look forward to it too, when it hits the PS3, Wii, PS2, and Xbox 360 this September.

The last batch of BlizzCon 09 tickets have come and gone. If you want guaranteed access to the show now, you’re going to have to down some serious scalpers — BlizzCon tickets are phat loot, and they won’t come cheap.

The good news is, there will likely be a lottery/contest of sorts for you to try your luck at as well as the tried and true DirecTV televised version of the event.

If you go to the official website for The Beatles: Rock Band, you’ll be treated with two new suprises. One is a entrance section to the preorder club, for those who preordered the game, and the other is a brand new site backdrop, with the sounds of a million screaming fans in the background. But what is that background? Why, it’s the set for the Ed Sullivan Show, of course!

Beatles fans out there surely know just how popular and frequent the Beatles were on Ed Sullivan’s show, so it only makes sense that this stage would appear in the game in some form. Though we don’t have a surefire confirmation, it’s pretty safe to say that the Ed Sullivan Show set will indeed be a stage/arena for you to play in in The Beatles: Rock Band. Chuck Liddell makes an appearance on Spike TV’s newest show, Deadliest Warrior, which uses a scientific approach to determine who the deadliest warriors of all time were. Each Show pits one warrior type against another and ends with CGI simulated fight with match ups including:

Pirate vs. Knight, Taliban vs. IRA, Yakuza vs. Mafia, Viking vs. Samurai, Green Beret vs. Spetznaz, Maori vs. Shaolin Monks, William Wallace vs. Shaka Zulu and Ninja vs. Spartan.

In this clip, the show tries to find modern day equivalents of ancient warriors in order to collect data on how each would fight. Former UFC champ Chuck Liddell drops by to represent modern day gladiators and there’s an especially cool trash talking bit between him and the Apache Warrior’s representative at the end of the clip.
