The Sci-Fi fans just shed a tear for what could have been. In an interview with GamePro, Modern Warfare 2 scribe, Jesse Stern, admitted that Infinity Ward actually considered a far fetched alien, and even undead, scenario for their latest CoD sequel:

“In the beginning we talked about having things in Modern Warfare 2 like outbreaks, viruses, chemical warfare, and even outlandish things such as aliens and the living dead,”

Guess those “CoD on Mars” rumors back in 2008 had at least a little truth to them. Sci-Fi fans shouldn’t give up hope completely though. News of a third Call of Duty team being hired by Activision leaked a few days ago, which means we may end up gunning down aliens while fighting off zombies in a futuristic CoD title after all.

If ever you wanted more proof that Activision just can’t get enough of the Call of Duty franchise, here it is. It now seems that two dedicated teams and a yearly sequel release isn’t enough for the publishers overactive CoD drive.

The tail end of a LA Times article discussing the sheer magnitude of Activision’s Modern Warfare 2 launch reveals that, in addition to Infinity Ward and Treyarch, a third mystery team has been signed to create yet another CoD release. Could Activision seriously be toying with the idea of releasing a semi-annual Call of Duty title? The option would allow them to offer three flavors of CoD; past, present, and future.

A source close to the matter believes that a massively multi-player version of the game is being considered as well. Call of Duty MMO anyone? The possibilities really are limitless considering Activision’s propensity to milk its franchises like a little kid trying to suck every last drop of their beverage through a straw until you finally scream out “STOP THAT!”

The last few seconds of a multiplayer team deathmatch can really suck for the players who are already dead and left with nothing to do but watch and wait. It sucks even more when you’re one of the two players left standing, and you’re facing an inevitable draw because the other bastard is no where to be found.

Well, here’s a pro tip for anyone who finds themselves in the aforementioned predicament … go John Rambo on their ass! That’s right, toss your throwing knife through the air, directly over a roof, and into the back of your opponents head. Don’t believe it’s possible? Despite the in-game terrorism scandal and the dedicated server protesting debacle, rock solid developer Infinity Ward out did themselves again. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 flew off store shelves like cupcakes at an over-eaters anonymous gathering. Mmm cupcakes.

According to early statistical data, Modern Warfare 2 has sold approximately seven million world wide copies across multiple platforms on the first day of its release. How impressive is that? Well, consider Rockstar’s well hyped release of Grand Theft Auto IV sold six million copies in its first week. Yeah, it’s pretty darn impressive.

All in all though, developers like Rockstar and Infinity Ward deserve every ounce of success that comes their way. When you think about the fact that games these days retail at sixty bucks a clip, we have every right to demand a top tier product for our money.

Modern Warfare 2 may not make the world a better place. It won’t cure Cancer or end world hunger, and it definitely won’t bring a smile to anti video game violence protesters, but assuming you’re Okay with all that, it’s one kick ass thrill ride of a game well worth the price.

Jon Christensen, Founder of Slash Gamer, and Jim Steyer, Common Sense Media CEO, recently appeared on the FOX morning show “Fox & Friends” to give their stance on the uber violent “terrorist” activities in Modern Warfare 2. The segment was titled “A game that lets you play as a terrorist?” and pitted Jon as the defender of video game content, against Jim, the defender of our precious and highly impressionable children. Here are the highlights:

Jim: The main issue with violent video games, including very well made made games like COD. There’s no question there’s correlation between violent games and kids…

Fox Host: You bring a violent game into a house with an 8 year old, nothing to stop that kid from playing it and becoming a terrorist…

Jon: That’s ridiculous! You’re not a terrorist! It’s pixelated violence! You’re not a terrorist!

There are a few gaming sites out there bashing Jon for losing his train of thought early in the segment and closing his eyes towards the end as he stood his ground defending simulated violence in video games. I’ve known Jon personally for several years now, and what the asshats who are ridiculing him don’t know is that Fox contacted him that same day with just a few hours notice. In addition to Jon never having been on television before, the segment was filmed at 3:30 AM his time, which meant he wasn’t exactly “well rested” before going on air.

Those of you that want to point the finger at Jon, calling him an embarrassment to gamers, should take a hard look in the mirror. He made the appearance in an effort to defend the medium we love from those who would rather reinforce the notion that it breeds future terrorists. Who cares if he didn’t have the on-screen composure of the great Tom Brokaw? His intentions were pure and his heart was in the right place. I applaud him for answering the call … of duty, and you should too.

Update: Just got back from the midnight release at … GameStop. Yes, GameStop. I went to Best Buy first, and apparently, I live next to the only Best Buy in the world that didn’t have a midnight release scheduled. About fifteen of us waited outside Best Buy until one of the associates pried the doors open and  asked “what can I help you with?” I of course responded with “Oh well the group of us figured we would swing by just before midnight to see if you were hiring.”No sorry we aren’t.” she replied.

We were eventually informed that they were not participating in the midnight release so me and my newly formed nerd pack made our way through the connected mall to add ourselves to a fairly lengthy GameStop line.

After waiting in line for about twenty minutes or so, I neared the entrance only to be asked whether or not I had a pre-order. Those of you who have been reading the site for some time now, probably know that I’m not too fond of the GameStop pre-order process (as it bit me in the ass when Gears of War came out), so I obviously had not pre-ordered it with them. Upon informing them, I was instructed to join another line, the “you may be shit out of luck line” for lack of a better name. Luckily, me and the rest of the gamers turned away by Best Buy were able to get our hands on some excess Modern Warfare 2 inventory.

With shiny new game in hand, I hopped in my car and drove it directly to the Wendy’s drive-thru for some late night grub. Sneaking back into my home, while trying to make sure I didn’t wake up my girlfriend, I realized that I still had to catch up on the end of the Steelers Broncos Monday Night Football game. A few fast forwarded commercials, and a late second half scoring spree by the Steelers, was more than the Kyle Orton lead Broncos could handle.

Time to power up the Xbox 360, load up Modern Warfare 2, and kick some multiplayer ass! I’ll be on my account (Darkhieser for those who have yet to add me) with Dylan and the rest of the west coasters joining in as soon as they can.

It has leaked on the web that several GameStop locations in the North East (Brooklyn NY, Philadelphia PA, Bowling Green Ohio) have been selling Modern Warfare 2 before its November 10th release date — as in today.

According to Mike Fahey over at Kotaku, at least one location claimed that they received specific permission from Activision to do so based on other retailers (like Best Buy, Wal-Mart, and even Mom n’ Pop shops) already breaking the release date in their district.

Another individual I spoke to said they purchased MW2 from a Brooklyn, NY GameStop and added that their uncle picked a copy up at a Philly location. Activision responded directly, releasing the following statement today:

“Activision has not given any retailer permission to sell Modern Warfare 2 prior to the Nov. 10 street date. The company fully supports the Nov.10 street date.”

I reached out to a hand full of managers at GameStop locations in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. All of them emphatically stated that they will be selling the game in accordance with Activision’s scheduled release date. In addition, I was told that employees working at locations caught breaking the release date are subject to immediate termination.

One GameStop manager added another layer to the convoluted “he said, she said” mess, accusing some individuals of flat out lying. His belief was that many of the leaked videos and images actually obtained from pirated copies of the game on torrent sites were being dishonestly attributed to GameStop broken release date sales a a means to garnish an envious reaction by those desperately seeking attention.

Update: Infinity Ward’s Creative Strategist, Robert Bowling, chimed in a few hours ago with the following tweet:

“ANY store selling #MW2 early is in violation of street date. There are no “special permissions”. That said, we won’t punish players for it.”

The holiday season is closing in and that means the corporate figure heads we know and love are loosening their jaws to allow for some serious product pitching.

Direct from the hefty predictions department come two haymakers. The first hails from the lips of Activision CEO, Bobby Kotick, and the second comes from Nintendo’s North American President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. Have your popcorn ready.

First lets start with Activision. Just how successful does they think Modern Warfare 2 will be? Kotick made the following statement in an interview with Bloomberg.com:

“Modern Warfare’ has the potential to be the biggest entertainment launch and not just of a video game,”

Translation, Kotick thinks Modern Warfare 2 will outsell Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (which grossed $929 million, according to Box Office Mojo). According to Janco Partners Industry Analyst Mike Hickey, Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 4 pulled in $500 million by selling 6 million copies in its first week.

But the corporate boasting fest doesn’t end there! Power up your Nintendo Wii and put on your “I love all things Mario t-shirt” because Reggie is prepared to lay it on thick.

GameTrailers TV host Geoff Keighley asked Reggie in a recent video interview if the new Super Mario Bros. title could outsell Modern Warfare 2 on a single platform. Reggie showed his pearly whites and delivered the following response:

“Absolutely. I say that unequivocally. On one particular platform, I do believe so.”

He then added the following stipulation to wrap up his response to Geoff:

“Now, you’ve got to give me the entire holiday selling season. Right? So let’s take it all the way through the January NPD data. Yes. I’ll put that stake in the ground.”

Activision’s highly anticipated Modern Warfare 2 can already be found on a multitude of internet torrent sites (so I’ve been told), but the quick work of Dallas based IPCybercrime (hired by Activision) helped move one cyber-thief out of his spacious gadget filled hacker pad into something a little more “cozy”.

According to Dean Takahashi of VentureBeat, a Craigslist post offering a Modern Warfare 2 Xbox 360 bundle perked the interest of Activision and prompted them to hire Dallas based IPCybercrime, a private investigation firm specializing in internet crime.

A little Facebook investigating revealed that two men stole a pallet of Modern Warfare bundled 360 units from a video game retailer. After apprehending the store thieves, the focus of the investigation shifted to locating a modder known online as “cdelamo815″ who planned to duplicate the Modern Warfare 2 game.

Again, the search started with Facebook, which ultimately pointed investigators to a console modding site. A little wheeling and dealing landed them 18-year-old Christian Del Amo’s cell phone number. They used that to pin point his residence and turn him over to authorities.

IPCybercrime owner, Rob Holmes, commented on the case:

“It all happened very fast … If these guys get their stuff out, then they can do some major damage to sales and spoil it for everybody. We plug leaks every day, but this was one of the biggest ones of the year.”

In the end this won’t do much to stop the leak of Modern Warfare 2 on torrent sites, as it’s already spreading across the web, but it does serve as an example of just how far an entity will to go to protect their intellectual property. Hell hath no furry like a publisher scorned.

Fans of Activision’s Action/RPG Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 will be happy to know that new DLC content is out today on both the Microsoft Xbox 360 and the Sony PlayStation 3. The download will unlock five new characters; Magneto, Carnage, Cable, Black Panther and Juggernaut (previously only available with pre-orders). It will also open up a new Civil War storyline with four challenge missions.

The cost of the update will run 800 MS points (about $10) on Xbox LIVE and $9.99 on the PlayStation Network. Full press release available below.

I’m not a trained killing machine, but if I was this trailer would definitly make me want to go out and find one terrorist after another and continuously shove each one of them up the others ass (kind of like those little stackable dolls) until there was only one heavily constipated terrorist left. Then I’d break his arm off and beat him into the ground with it. Yup.

In a few days, the latest installment of Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare series will be upon us, but until then, we will have lots of amped up predictions and mind boggling preorder numbers to discuss. The joys of anticipation.

During a recent interview,GameStop VP, Tony Bartel, said that:

“As of today, the number of pre-order reservations we’ve taken for [Modern Warfare 2] is the highest for any title we’ve ever sold in our 6,200 store network.”

In addition to that, analyst Michael Pachter made some hefty sales predictions as a part of his Q3 Activision Blizzard financial preview:

“Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 should allow Activision to achieve guidance. We expect global sales to exceed $500 million in the first week following launch, and think that the company can easily sell 10 million units in Q4.”

Can you feel it? The hype machine is moving faster than a heat seeking missile, and after a rough patch consisting of dedicated server debate and leaked terrorist gameplay footage, Infinity Ward likely welcomes the positive feedback. As far as I’m concerned, they are one of the best development teams around and they deserve every ounce of it.

Modern Warfare 2 will be available in stores on Tuesday, November 10th for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

Thrifty gamers looking to milk their Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare purchase a little longer will be happy to know that Activision is making a the “Variety Map Pack” DLC (first released in April of 2008) available to consumers at a discounted price today.

The pack includes four maps “Broadcast,” “Creek,” “Chinatown” and “Killhouse” and rings in at a 50% discount amounting to 400 MS Points (about $5) on the 360 and $4.99 on the PS3. The deal ends on midnight on November 8th.

In addition, another double XP weekend will run on both the PS3 and the 360 starting November 6th at 3pm EST through November 8th at midnight EST).

Fans of the underwear sliding Risky Business inspired Guitar Hero set may be shocked to hear that after countless Activision milking, the developer is finally transitioning (litterally) into a larger arena.

I say literally, because the set that we’ve all become so re-familiar with will be pulled apart before our eyes in the debut commercial for Activision’s newest game … Band Hero.

The spot itself will feature Taylor Swift backed up by the Weezer boys (Pete Wentz and Travis Barker) as they expand their horizons from a living room to an arena full of adoring fans. You can get a behind-the-scenes look at some B-roll footage below.

The trailer above … it’s the teaser for Modern Warfare 2 put out by Infinity Ward months ago. Remember it? You should.

So many sites spent weeks trying to analyze the distorted video and muffled audio, and if you remember it, the recently leaked terrorist level that made it’s way around the web shouldn’t come as such a surprise. It’s essentially the teaser trailer that Infinity Ward put out when the game was first announced only this time it’s unscrambled and obviously playable.

As mentioned in a previous post, the level is optional and initiated via an in-game checkpoint. I repeat, you don’t have to play it, but my guess is that nearly everyone who buys the game will.

A game changing reveal was first teased by Infinity Ward Community Manager, Robert Bowling, during an interview which took place at a Los Angeles held Modern Warfare 2 event in September.

Bowling stated that there was an aspect to the game that had yet to be discussed, and went on to say that the reason it hasn’t been mentioned is because “once you see it you completely forget everything we’ve already talked about” adding that this aspect will turn Modern Warfare 2 into a “whole new game”.

Fast forward to today, and we are presented with supposed “leaked” gameplay footage depicting Modern Warfare 2 third person gameplay. In addition to that, a screen capture of what appears to be a listing of gameplay modes has also surfaced on the net. Have a look at both after the jump and let us know what you think.

The video above does look “Modern Warfare-ish” but I am not completely convinced that it’s what it appears to be. It might be real considering a few early copies are rumored to be in circulation and the comments made by the community manager lend themselves nicely to this type of gameplay twist scenario,  but it also may be nothing more than an elaborate hoax by an attention hungry gamer.

UPDATE: In a recent PR email sent to Ripten from G4TV teasing Modern Warfare 2 Exclusives on X-Play, the promotional copy promises a look at MW2 “never before seen Co-op play from two wildly different perspectives” during this week’s show. Sounds like third person to me. Thoughts?

Oh Cable … the memories your armor wearing super-hero self brings back. I can still remember preordering 10 copies of X-Force #1 as a kid back in the early 90’s. Well rounded nerds (in their late twenties/early thirties) will not only feel my pain (those issues aren’t worth the paper they are printed on) but know that the first issue of X-Force prominently featured the Rob Liefeid illustrated Cable character on the cover.

Go figure, you actually can make a living off of drawing men, women, and sometimes furry animals in tights … that is until you have a mental breakdown (sorry Rob). Anyway, Activision announced that the futuristic Cable (or as I like to call him ”Doc Brown on roids”) will be available as a downloadable character in their upcoming Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 video game. We here at Ripten enjoy games quite a bit. (Well, some of us. The jury’s still out on that shifty Naylor character.) In fact, one of our highest-rated games of 2007 was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. All things considered, you can see why we’re really excited for Infinity Ward & Activision’s latest foray into the Call of Duty series, Modern Warfare 2, and this trailer does nothing to satiate our hunger.

The trailer, titled Infamy, is the newest trailer for Modern Warfare 2, and it’s amazing. No spoilers, but there’s a rather large reveal at the end of the trailer, and I have no doubt that it’s making a lot of people excited. Maybe this is just me, but does this trailer make anyone else wish that there was a Call of Duty movie? Yes?

Good.

It’s obviously not the full song, and to be honest it’s not likely to be the best one, but damn it, it’s Daft Punk, and it’s new. Even beside the fact that the game is looking surprisingly entertaining, DJ Hero is taunting Daft Punk fans everywhere into wanting the game- new tracks, heavy focus, even silly things like the Alive 2007 stage.

Anyone remember this post I made back in May? In it, I made threats to attack Activision if Daft Punk wasn’t in the game(I was joking, Mr. Activision lawyer). Obviously, they took this the way I meant them to take it and promptly added them into the game, making me and many others very cheerful about it. No need to thank me, honestly. Anyone would have done the same thing.

Oooowww!!! Another new clip of Modern Warfare 2 showing off some bad-ass new features, including knife throwing and host migration among other new additions.

Towards the end of the clip it shows a player being disconnected, but instead of being kicked back to the lobby, a new host migration feature quickly finds another host keeping the player in the game. Dope as shit! We gotta give big ups to Infinity Ward for adding this feature to MW2, because getting disconnected and kicked back to the lobby sucks big time.

The second big addition featured in this video, also towards the end of the clip, has a player throwing a knife to kill an enemy. That’s some pretty sweet stuff right there. The rest of the clip shows off some gameplay footage of Capture the Flag mode with a few noticeable new additions to the game like blood-splatter effects and a riot shield. I can’t wait for November 10! Check out the video!

Yessir! Here’s some leaked footage of Modern Warfare 2 that has emerged over the Internets that should get you even more pumped for the highly anticipated shooter. While Infinity Ward and Activision have been relatively quiet about the game and have done a pretty good job keeping much info from getting out, this somehow slipped from under their noses from a recent Game Crazy retail event and features some great action from the Rio de Janeiro stage. With the third map pack just announced yesterday, Treyarch and Activision have let the numbers out on how the two previous World at War DLC map packs have sold.

According to Activision, the map packs have sold over 4 million copies over Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network. Wow, that’s a whole lot of cash money just on DLC maps. We can only guess that Map Pack 3 will boost these numbers and most likely sell a few million more copies.

Infinity Ward needs to learn from what Treyarch has done with World at War and make sure they offer plenty of DLC with Modern Warfare 2 because it’s sure to sell just as much, if not more.

Yessir! Even with Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare 2 coming out in a matter of months, looks like Treyarch isn’t giving up on World at War anytime soon. It seems like Map Pack 2 just came out yesterday and we’re already hearing that Map Pack 3 is in the works and is set to be released sometime in August (I’m sure with another double XP weekend!)

Map Pack 3 will feature three new multiplayer maps, “Battery”, “Revolution” and “Breach”. There will also be a new Nazi Zombies map called “Der Reise” which translates as The Journey, or The Voyage.

I’m pumped that Treyarch is still working hard at World at War DLC as it gives Call of Duty fans something new and fresh to play until November and the release of MW2.

While some might not consider this an actual story worth reporting, others might consider it the scoop of the century. Of course, those others are the same fiends that’ll buy whatever rubbish Activision pumps out, but still, this is the first I’ve seen of any Band Hero art or logo. Today, I went to my local GameStop to put five bucks down on Scribblenauts & Professor Layton & The Diabolical Box, and when I get there, of course I see nothing other than a bunch of colorful displays for Band Hero, a game Activision announced back in May and then, well, never mentioned again.

I expected it to be a bright & cheery logo, after hearing that the game would be the first kid-centric E10+ game in the Hero franchise, but I didn’t expect it to be so flamboyant. If you look closely, you’ll even see the multicolored outline around the Band Hero font. Luckily, there’s more to this post than gaudy logos- the displays confirm that the game will be coming to the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii, just in case we weren’t sure. Anyone that pre-orders at GameStop will also get a code for two free songs in the game.

The Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 2 is officially coming out tomorrow, Thursday June 11. Hitting both the 360 and PS3, the second map pack will run you 800 MS points on the 360 and $9.99 on the PlayStation Store. Map Pack 2 will include three new maps: Banzai, Corrosion, and Sub Pens, along with a new zombie map, Shi No Numa. I’m a huge fan of World at War, so you can bet your ass I’ll be getting the map pack as soon as its available.

When DJ Hero was first hinted at a year ago, I was kind of looking forward to it. I assumed it be a series of scratching to a bunch of hip-hop remixes, but I was completely wrong. Of course, you’ve already heard me complaing about the songs mixed for the game, but seeing as how we now have the first official footage of a song on the highest difficulty in the game, I feel like I can give a somewhat solid impression on the game.

It looks kind of boring.

Now, I say looks because I haven’t gotten any hands on time with the game yet, but as soon as I do, I plan to post more impressions here. But the fact of the matter is that the game looks like it moves very slowly. I’m sure this isn’t the case, since working the controller must be much more difficult than it looks here, but all I have is the 30 seconds of footage to go off of as of now.

The song above is “KRS-1’s Jack of Spades (DJ Shadow Mix) vs David Bowie’s Lets Dance” and the mix isn’t too bad.

Finally, enough with the teasers already! The first complete trailer for Modern Warfare 2 debuted this past Sunday night during the Eastern Conference Finals between the Cavaliers and the Magic (the Magic won by the way, sorry Lebron fans).

Running at just a second over two minutes, the trailer gives us a better glimpse of what MW2 is about and also goes onto tell us a bit about the story and the rise of villain Makarov. Not that we all aren’t already excited about the game, but this trailer just gives us another reason to be. Check it out!

Bizarre Creations is famous for two games: Project Gotham Racing and Geometry Wars, both of which have the power to induce headaches with fast-paced gameplay. When Bizarre Creations announced Blur, we didn’t really know what to think or the game, because it sounded like an extension or sequel to Project Gotham Racing 4, but it looks like Blur will focus more on street racing than circuit racing.

Good for Bizarre for not straying from the formula. The PGR series is really fun, and I have a feeling they could strike another hit with Blur. The trailer doesn’t show much (if any, really) gameplay, but it definitely leaves a lot to be desired- literally. I want to know more about this game, but until Bizarre and Activision open up, all we have is the trailer and some screen shots you can see after the jump.
