There are two reasons why you are reading this article right now, either you’ve recently heard about mechanical keyboards and you’re intrigued by them, or you have no clue what they are, but you know the name sounds fancy.

Either way, let’s get to the point here. What is a mechanical keyboard? Well, a mechanical keyboard looks the same as your regular keyboard, but each key is activated by it’s own mechanical switch. How is this different from your regular or “gaming” keyboard? Those keyboards have a PCB (Printed Circuit Board) with contact points on them. A rubber-domed sheet goes over the top of it with more contact points and your plastic keys push the two contact points together to register a keystroke. How would a mechanical keyboard make a difference for me? Well, you don’t have any tactile feedback, no audible click to tell you when the key has been registered, and you have to push down further. But why does any of this matter exactly? With some tactile feedback and the keys pushing back at you, you’re able to know when to pull back and it helps you type faster. With an audible click when a key is registered, your brain subconsciously knows when to carry on with the next key, which one of your other fingers would probably already be on. This means less mistakes and not having letters in the wrong place. It also helps you learn “touch typing” (not looking at the keys when typing). Lastly, when you don’t have to push down further, you’re able to type faster. These benefits are not only good for typists, but for gamers too.

In the last couple of years, mechanical keyboards have started making a big hit in the gaming crowd. I mainly put it down to the company, Cherry Corp, whose keyswitch line, Cherry MX, has become very popular among keyboard manufactures as of late. Mechanical keyboards are not a new thing though. This technology has been around since the 80′s, most notably in IBM’s Model M keyboard, when personal computers were still becoming a thing. The reason why these didn’t survive in the market is because the type of keyboard you’re probably using right now is a lot cheaper to produce. With a $5 keyboard compared to a $100 + (on average) mechanical keyboard using Cherry MX switches, it’s a no brainer for computer companies to go with the cheaper one. Especially when they can just add some lights, mark the price up far beyond its worth and sell it. That’s why mechanical keyboards aren’t so popular anymore, but the good news is that it’s a lot easier to get them now.

What I’m going to show you in this RoundUp is a couple of mechanical keyboards I’ve been sent for review. Sadly I wasn’t able to get a nice range of different keyboards to review, but I have recently played with some other mechanical keyboards with different switches. So I’ll be able to tell you about those ones too, but I didn’t have enough time with them to be able to write full reviews about them. I’ll also give you a bit of a guide on what type switch you should be looking for and also the brand of keyboard you might want to get for your needs.

Soul Calibur Coming to iOS 19th January

More fighting game news, this time on the iPhone and iPod Touch- and the fact that the original Soul Calibur is coming to them. Soon.

The original Soul Calibur will be coming to iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4 and iPad 2 on the 19th of January, though a price point hasn’t been released yet.

The modes included in the port are “arcade battle, time attack, survival, extra survival, practice and museum,” of which time attack, survival and extra survival are compatible with Game Center’s leaderboard feature.

Infinity Blade 2 Officially Announced (Trailer)

Infinity Blade was arguably the finest gaming experience to be had on the iOS platform. Stunning visuals, responsive combat and mad loots.

It was one of those pick up and play type of games, that easily induced addiction. Minutes become hours, hours become days and so fourth. So, prepare for another journey on your i-thing as Epic Games has announced that Infinity Blade 2 will be releasing December 1st 2011.

Epic promises improved gameplay and visuals, which if true, will be mind-blowing considering how good the game looked running on an iPad 2. No word on the pricing yet, but they did present a swanky trailer which features dual wielding;

Now that’s all well and good Chair, but put out Shadow Complex on iOS already!

Steve Jobs Resigns As CEO of Apple

Is this gaming news? You bet your ass it is. Unless you’re still one of the people who hasn’t realized that iOS gaming is kind of a big deal. The man is a pioneer, and the products he has introduced to the world have changed the face of mobile gaming forever.

He has lived through a liver transplant as well as pancratic cancer, and it is believed that further health problems have led to his resignation.

Tim Cook, current Apple COO will succeed Jobs as CEO, however Jobs will stay on as Chairman of the Board.

In a letter addressed to his company today, Jobs stated:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Bungie Bringing Marathon To The Ipad, For Free

Remember Marathon? I had no idea about it’s existence until Bungie rose to god tier among the pantheon of developers. Quickly picking it up on Xbox Live Arcade when it launched, I was actually surprised how well it played for a decade old Mac game.

For age old fans, and newer ones like me, Marathon will be coming to the iPad for absolutely no charge. The transition to iPad wasn’t a Bungie initiative however, Marathon fan “Daniel Blezek” began porting the game to his iPad unbeknown to Bungie. But it’s all good news, as the project is indeed sanctioned by Bungie, an appreciative Daniel stated the following in an interview;

“It’s not every company who would support bringing a 16 year old game back to life,”

Bravo Dan and Bungie, I for one will download this app as soon as it’s made available. Keep checking RipTen for information as to when Marathon hit’s the App Store, and leave your thoughts below.

Final Fantasy III Now Available on iPad

Square-Enix announced today that Final Fantasy III, originally released in 1990 (JPN) and re-released on the DS in 2006 (USA), has now been released worldwide for the iPad (yay). The iPhone/iPod Touch version came out last month and it plays wonderfully.

The iPad version of Final Fantasy III has better 3-D graphics to take advantage of the iPad’s increased power in comparison to the DS, and is known by many as one of the best Final Fantasy games there is. The Final Fantasy class system was pioneered in III and allows characters to change jobs at any point. The immersive and memorable story has also captivated many fans both new and old.

Final Fantasy III is available for $16.99 on the App Store right meow.

Infinity Blade Is The Fastest Grossing iDevice App Ever

Infinity Blade was released earlier in the month and was met with praise, even by our own mobile guru Brandon Fenty (Our Review Here). The graphics are what is truly stunning about the game, Epic and Chair managed to get the Unreal 3 engine running silky smooth on the i-portable devices, so it’s no surprise that it’s become the fastest grossing app ever.

The modest price of $5.99 coupled with it’s insane visuals no doubt help sell the game, so much in fact that with 271,424 downloads in just four days it made $1.6 Million Dollars. This beat out the last record set by “Cut The Rope” which made $1 Million dollars in 10 days. Whether or not it remains as one of the iPhone’s most revered apps is unseen (Angry Birds is still king), but we encourage you to check out our review and pick the game up!

Verizon to Finally Unveil iPhone On November 9th?

An inside source at Verizon has provided RipTen with some long awaited information. According to an email sent out by corporate today, Verizon will be unveiling an, “Iconic Device” for pre-sale starting on November 9th. This, “Iconic Device” is projected to be in high demand once it is officially announced.

You don’t have to read too hard between the lines to figure out just what this iconic device is. Rumors of the iPhone finally coming to Verizon have been circulating all year, and with the holiday season fast approaching, it looks like Verizon is finally ready to ride the Apple gravy train all the way to the bank.

What does this mean for gamers? It means that one of the top mobile gaming platforms will now be in the hands of more gamers than ever before!!

Australian Labor Government to Push for Mobile Phone Game Classifications

In another Bryce Wilson Australian exclusive piece of news, Mobile-phone based games could come under strict new classification laws if Julia Gillard and her band of merry men (and women!) are re-elected in the upcoming elections.

Due to a current loophole in our laws, thousands of games and pieces of content slip by the Federal Classification Board via Apple’s iTunes store, despite the Federal Board declaring on their website that every game must ship with a classification rating (G, PG, M, MA and hopefully an R soon). The reason for this loophole? The Classification Act from 1995 doesn’t stipulate the specific conditions for applications and games made available via mobile phones and app distribution services. This is bound to kill any independent development for the booming game sales iSeries platform as classification fees can cost anywhere between $470 and $2040 (AUD).

Brendan O’Connor, Minister for Home Affairs had a spokeswoman confirm that he had infact raised the issue of the loophole with state and territory ministers and counterparts. The spokeswoman confirmed that the issue would be raised at an upcoming classification meeting organised to discuss the induction of the popular R18 rating. O’Connor said that much more work needed to be done before a decision could be made on the rating despite a whopping 98% of people agreeing one was needed.

RAGE Coming to iPhone at 60 Frames Per Second

John Carmack of id software announced at a live keynote at QuakeCon in Dallas, Texas that Rage will be coming to iPhone in glorious 60 frames per second.

This version of Rage will have “MegaTextures,” the great framerate, and will have a different development cycle from the main Rage title. In fact the cycle will be so different that Rage for iPhone will be out this year, and will be low-cost like the other games on the app store.

The game will run on an iPhone 3GS, but Carmack did say that the game is best on an iPad or iPhone 4G. Check out the unbelievable video below.

WiiPhoto App Links Your iPhone to Your Wii!!

WiiPhoto, a new app for the iPhone, has just been released. The app has an innovative new idea: share photos from your iPhone to your Wii!! The app connects over your wifi connection in much the same way the Remote app connects to iTunes, and lets you view your photos on your TV through your Wii.

The app can also connect to your Mac, as well as pull images from Flickr, Facebook and other popular social networks. WiiPhoto is available in the Apple App Store for $2.99. Check out the video below to see it in action.

Basically, the app is creating a web server that the user connects to using the Wii’s Internet Channel. Definitely a cool idea, and it looks to be well implemented. Definitely worth checking out if you’re looking for a simple way to share photos to your television, and happen to have a Wii and an iPhone.

If you’re in the USA, you might just be heading back to school or college in the near future. It just so happens that EA Mobile are accommodating you with a “back to school” sale on iPhone games- the perfect type of game to play underneath a desk.

RipTen Review: The NOX Scout Is Music To Our Ears

With so many headsets to compete with, how does the Scout, a new brand from NOX stand apart from the rest? Good question. We have the answer.

I know for me, I tend to go through headset after headset because they get so tangled that the wires kink up and break or the ear buds themselves are just so freaking uncomfortable!

iPhone Game Sale: Gameloft and Capcom

Day of Defeat: Source Now Available for Mac

Valve’s superb World War 2 multiplayer shooter Day of Defeat: Source has become available for Mac users today, following the release of Team Fortress 2 and Counter-Strike: Source on the platform earlier this year.

The game can be purchased on Steam, and is certainly not going to set you back too much, as it’s a fairly old game by now. Of course, being a Valve shooter, it’s still a brilliant and exciting multiplayer shooter- I highly recommend it.
