Big Daddies borrowed and not included.

According to Calum, the bottle’s design is free to be used and if there’s enough demand, he’ll release the brewing recipe. So please, demand it.

Bioshock Infinite to Feature ‘Old School’ 1999 Mode

2K Games has announced Bioshock Infinite’s ’1999 Mode’- a game type which makes the experience fit for old school gamers.

The game mode makes the game more challenging in a variety of ways- the most interesting being that decisions made by the player will have a much more prominent and lasting effect.

Ken Levine, the genius behind the Bioshock franchise, said:

We want to give our oldest and most committed fans an option to go back to our roots. In 1999 Mode, gamers face more of the permanent consequences of their gameplay decisions. In BioShock Infinite, gamers will have to sweat out the results of their actions. In addition, 1999 Mode will demand that players pick specializations, and focus on them.

If you’re tired of Vita-Chambers, this mode might be for you. 1999 mode requires better weapon, power, and health management, and “sends the gamer directly to a “Game Over” screen if he or she lacks the resources to be brought back to life.”

This seems absolutely fantastic. More permanent decisions are what Bioshock needs- it was always a bit off when choosing to kill little sisters had very little difference to choosing not to.

Cosplay Spotlight: BioShocking at Dragon*Con

With Dragon*Con out of the way, 2011′s con season is essentially over. Irrational Games decided to end things with a bang by sneaking up on unsuspecting BioShock cosplayers at the Georgia Aquarium. From Big Daddies to Little Sisters, these cosplayers wore their fan badges proudly as they impersonated the citizens of Rapture. Irrational even put together a quaint little blog post highlighting the event.

This also may be one of the scariest Little Sister videos ever.

Gotta love those BioShock fans. They definitely know how to do the creep. For more freak-tastic photos, check out Irrational’s flickr album and lurk to your heart’s content.

Geeked Out: Would You Kindly Check Out This Andrew Ryan Action Figure

Don’t let anyone ever try to convince you that you’re too old for action figures– toys don’t start getting really cool until you’re all grown up anyway. Take this Andrew Ryan statue for example. You’re a BioShock fan, right? Why wouldn’t you want the creator of Rapture to just hang out on your desk?

"Blah blah blah slaves blah blah men blah blah."

Especially when he’s all decked out with a putter and… revolver. Yeah, this ain’t your sister’s Ken doll. This is Joe of War’s ode to a damn fine game. Behind that snappy vest and the many layers of paint lies one of Frankenstein’s creations, a body from a Buffy The Vampire Slayer toy with a Tony Stark head. It gives “splicing” a whole new meaning.

Sure the Bioshock Infinite gameplay demo shown at E3 was awesome. That’s why we awarded it Game of Show. Except you haven’t seen the full demo…until now. Thanks to Irrational Games we have the full demo below. Who needs the submerged Rapture when you can have the magnificent flying city of Columbia?

Anyone else notice “Revenge of the Jedi”? For the few that would know, it was the original title of “Return of the Jedi” which was changed because of ”Star Trek II: The Revenge of Khan” which was coming out around the same time, but was changed anyway to “Wrath of Khan” (think I just cemented my nerd status).

Bioshock Infinite will release in 2012.

E3 2011: Sony Announces Move Support and PSVita Version of Bioshock Infinite

You read that correctly. Sony and Ken Levine confirmed at their keynote at E3 that the latest installment of Bioshock will feature Move support. Not only that but Ken Levine hinted that it is very likely that Bioshock Infinite will be on the NGP in one form or another.

That’s some pretty cool stuff. As an additional bonus, PS3 copies of Bioshock Infinite will come with a copy of the original Bioshock on the same Blu-Ray. Not a bad deal at all.

If The World Ended Tomorrow, What Video Game Would You Play?

As we all wait for the world to end tomorrow (according a handful of nutjobs) we’ve been doing some thinking around the RipTen offices.

If the world does indeed end tomorrow (which it won’t) what video game (that currently exists or not) would we want to be playing as we’re going off to that spirit in the sky?

Well, we asked around and these were what we came up with:

Chad Lakkis: Darksiders 2 (He sort of has a thing for Joe Mad)

Dave Oshry: Planescape: Torment (He’d like to go out while pondering the nature of man)

Bryce Wilson: DiRT 3 (This choice paid for by Codemasters AU)

Dani Cantrell: Chrono Trigger (She likes bosses named Lavos and boys with spikey red hair)

Steph Gutowski: Mass Effect 3 (DUH)

Brandon Fenty: Super Mario World (He’d like to relive his childhood)

Dylan Duarte: BioShock (DOUBLE RAPTURE)

Sam Naylor: Half Life 3 (Who wouldn’t?)

Aaron Alexander: GTA IV (He wants to shoot innocent bystanders while eating hot dogs…)

Dave Ernst: Earthbound (It’s his favorite game of all time)

Justin Berube: Super Mario Bros. (Spoken like a true Nintendo Fanboy)

Bioshock’s City of Rapture Recreated in Minecraft

A small team of Minecraft players has recreated a decent chunk of the city of Rapture. Obsessed, maybe? But who isn’t obsessed with Minecraft these days.

The Minecraft server shows off locations from the original Bioshock as well as a few newly designed ones along with memorable characters such as Little Sisters, Big Daddies and Sander Cohen.

Check out the videos for all of its glory. Andrew Ryan would be proud!

Insane Submerged Bioshock PC Case Mod

Look, I like Bioshock a lot, but would never have the courage to submerge a PC in water or any other liquid. sirleechalot (his reddit name, hopefully not his real name) has the courage to submerge everything, except the hard drive and power source, in a 5 gallion tank filled with mineral oil.

Check out this video to see how he did it. There’s nothing like booting up your PC and watching the bubbles fly!

New Bioshock Infinite Gameplay Teaser Looks Slick and Refreshing

Finally out from under the sea (the place to be?). Seeing bright colors and sunlight is definitely new to the Bioshock series and boy does it look nice. Leaving dark and dreary Rapture for a city in the sky is possibly one of the best directions Irrational Games could take the series.

Watch this gameplay demo teaser broadcast on GTTV last night and take a nice breath of fresh air.

BioShock: Infinite Won’t Make You Go Alone

According to today’s update of Irrational Games’ “Ten Things You Should Know About BioShock: Infinite” series, which surprisingly doesn’t have the chick from the Secret World of Alex Mack in it, your travels through the steampunk fetishist dream world of Columbia won’t be a lonely one. The third BioShock title will see you rescue a woman by the name of Elizabeth who will serve an important part in the main character’s journey amongst the clouds.

From the Mouth of Irrational Games;

In BioShock Infinite, you aren’t exploring Columbia alone. You’ve been sent to recover the powerful but vulnerable woman Elizabeth, who accompanies and aids you throughout your journey.

Nothing more attractive than a powerful, yet vulnerable, lady. They are usually the ones that do the weird stuff in bed.

More importantly, Elizabeth will be able to aid you- if you want to be helped out by a girl. According to Irrational, Elizabeth will be able to either aid you in combat or hang back and let you do your thing, all dependent on how you want to play the game. To me, the most exciting thing mentioned is that she will be an ally and not need to be escorted. There are very few things in this world more annoying than a bad escort mission. Obviously, we will need to see the AI in motion to decide whether or not this Elizabeth is a helping hand or an albatross around your neck.

Here’s a fun little Dylan factoid: Wildlife also did an exceptional Iron Man piece that I just so happened to use as a wallpaper way back when the Iron Man movie came out. What a small internet!

It’s five o’clock (in the pacific time zone)! Kick back, put your feet up, and relax with a terrifying picture of intimidating Big Daddy! Wait, what?

What I love about today’s art is that it isn’t some unique reimagining, but rather a classic, creepy-as-all-hell Big Daddy from Bioshock. The only thing I can’t decide is whether or not he’s scarier than the Little Sister hiding under his arm. She’s definitely looking into my soul. I can feel it. The maddest of props to artist Jerry Wilson.

Gore Verbinski’s Bioshock Movie: Still Alive

About two years ago, we first got the word that Gore Verbinski, producer behind the Pirates of the Carribean series, would be directing a film based around everyone’s favorite current-gen underwater dystopian FPS Bioshock. Last year he dropped from the project, saying it would conflict with the work on his film Rango with Johnny Depp, but he jumped back on the project as the producer, with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directing.

Having not heard anything about the film, and learning of the film’s budget issues, we all assumed that the film was no more- but it looks like Gore Verbinski has no hopes of letting this project slip out of his hands because of a silly issue like “money”.

We’re working trying to make it. The problem with Bioshock was: R-rated movie, underwater, horror. It’s a really expensive R-rated movie,” he explained. “So we’re trying to figure out a way working with [director] Juan Carlos [Fresnadillo] to get the budget down and still keep so it’s true to the core audience, you know? The thing is it has to be R, a hard R.”

Gore goes on to confirm that the project isn’t dead and that they’re still working on getting things sorted out before going into production with the film. He also says that while he’s not a fan of developing films from videogames, Bioshock, because of its story, is the one exception. Good on you, Verb. Bioshock’s story would actually make for a pretty good film, and the direction Verbinski seems to want it to go in is just right. Hopefully, this film will go into production by next year. Take-Two Interactive Wants One New IP Every Year

Despite being constantly hammered about the next installment of Grand Theft Auto, Take-Two’s Alan Lewis says that the company has several important franchises and wants a new one each year.

“Every year we’re going to try to introduce at least one new IP that we hope over the long term will work well for us.”

They did just that with Red Dead Revolver, which was released in 2004 to mixed reviews, but paved the way for 2010′s smash hit Red Dead Redemption. And Mafia II, the sequel to the 2002 hit, looks like it could be one of the best games of the year when it hits in August.

And then throw in BioShock, Max Payne, Civilization, and Midnight Club, among others, and yeah, you have quite a bit of hit franchises, which obviously isn’t stopping Take-Two from creating more. And while all these new franchises will just lead to more and more sequels flooding the market, as long as they keep up their “one new IP per year” mission, I’ll be pretty happy with them.

Rumour: 2K to Develop Bioshock MMO

Some sources close to Destructoid (mysterious ones, even) have released ~~the Kraken~~ a rumour suggesting that 2K are developing a Massively Multiplayer Online game based on the Bioshock universe. Considering the best thing about Bioshock is the setting, one can see where the idea has merits.

However, MMOs just don’t work any more. Star Trek Online, for example, is now settling into slight obscurity along with the massive pile of other failed MMOs. World of Warcraft, Eve, Hello Kitty and Everquest just have too much of a monopoly on our money and time. My prediction: if this is real, it will not do well.

Here at Ripten, we embrace diversity. We understand that there are many different shades of geek and that we have no right to cater to the handful we deem worthy of our love. Why ignore those who spend hard earned money and precious time on the costumes we take for granted? Now, we bring you the cosplay spotlight — a weekly offering of the best male and female cosplay on the web. Our focus is more on difficulty and final result rather than half naked and most cleavage, though we won’t shy away from boobs if we truly feel the cosplay is worthy.

This week, we’re celebrating the bizarre awesome-ness of Bioshock and plot-less fight fest that is Soul Calibur.

Bioshock: Mr. Bubbles

Volpin: H-o-l-y crap. If you are not immediately amazed by this costume, then your standards are unrealistic and you must be some kind of bitter god, because this is just a stunning piece of work. Where to begin. Not only do the lights work, but the drill itself actually spins. According to Volpin, his boots give him an additional six inches for super bigness. This is literally a Big Daddy. Check out the link for the costume profile. This thing is definitely worthy of endless praise.

Soul Calibur: Tira

pixiekitty: This costume is one of my personal favorites. I never get tired of seeing it worn at cons, especially when it’s done well like you see here. Pixiekitty has a large collection of stunning cosplays, but this stands out the most for me. The intricate details come together beautifully. From the hard pieces like the skulls and gauntlets to the numerous fabric components, her attention to detail really shines. I also totally have a thing for that hat. Oh baby, oh baby.
