Superhero Game Marathon Raising for Clean Water Projects

A group of Australian philanthropists have begun a 72-hour superhero game marathon to raise money for water aid.

You can join in and donate here. At the time of writing they’re torturing themselves by playing Superman 64, but there are loads of games that they plan to play through in the next 72 hours.

100% of public donations directly fund water projects by charity: water, a non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations.

If we reach our goal of $5,000, we’ll be providing clean and sustainable drinking water to 1 whole community (about 250 people!)

If 10 Million People Pre-Order Afterfall InSanity For $1 – It Will Stay $1

If you’re an indie developer and you want to get your game out there, pricing it at $1 is a good way to get attention… it’s also a good way to lose money… unless for some reason 10 million people pre-order it for $1…

That seems to be the plan for the team behind Afterfall InSanity.

Here’s the rundown:

The pre-orders can be made directly from the game’s website www.afterfall-universe.com. Once the company’s target goal is achieved Afterfall: InSanity will be distributed among the p2p (peer 2 peer) networks such as Torrent. Additionally, 10% of the revenues will be donated to one of the largest charity organisations in the world. However, if the number of pre-orders does not reach the 10 million copy sales target, then the revenue collected will be donated to the charity in its entirety. Besides the game itself, players will receive the soundtrack as an added bonus, and those who will register their order will immortalized as part of the game by having their names included as part of the credits.

Nicolas Games is throwing down the gauntlet to the whole industry. ‘As an independent distributor we can afford to try starting a revolution. Being absolute game fanatics ourselves, we want to prove that high-class games do not have to be associated with high price tags. Our goal is to attract players from all over the world and offer them a great deal; if we can get 10 million people to buy our game we will sell it for just 1 dollar. I strongly believe that this news will electrify the whole market and together we will set a new record,’ Tomasz Majka, the CEO of Nicolas Games said.

Pay What You Want for the Third Humble Indie Bundle

The Humble Indie Bundle is back for a third time- this time including great indie games like VVVVVV and Crayon Physics Deluxe.

All the games in the Bundle work natively on Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows, with no DRM- and can be redeemed on Steam. The most important thing, however, is that both indie devs and charities (Child’s Play and the EFF) benefit from the sales: and you can choose how much goes to each.

It really is both a great cause and an amazing deal. Do everyone involved a favour and don’t pay $0.01 or something; be nice.

‘Scare to Care’ Running Amnesia: The Dark Descent Fundraiser This Weekend

This weekend Tim and Vernon Shaw of ‘Scare to Care‘ will be running a charity fundraiser and broadcasting it live on the web. They’re playing Amnesia: The Dark Descent- so expect a few screams.

Not only that, but the brothers will be doing everything in their power to scare the living hell out of each other live on Ustream. As Vernon puts it:

On Saturday I will try to start and finish Amnesia while my older brother (Tim) and a group of volunteers try to scare me outside of the game in every way imaginable. On Sunday, we will switch roles and Tim will try to start and finish the game while myself and the group of volunteers try to reciprocate the scares.

The cause they’re doing all this for is the Camp Kesem UCSD, a charity which runs a summer camp for the children of cancer victims. It seems a worthy cause and the guys are a few hundred bucks off their $1000 target so please give what you can. Good luck lads!

I have looked up to and met many a man and woman I admire in the gaming world in my life – however, one man yet remains. That man is John Carmack. Founder and head of Id software, revolutuonizer of the FPS genre, and a friggin rocket scientist to boot. Well, you may not be able to hang with John, but you can get his autograph on a Nintendo DS Lite, and for a great cause.

Here are the details on the auction:

You are bidding on an autographed Orcs & Elves-themed Onyx Black Nintendo DS Lite signed by id Software founder John Carmack. Though the box has been opened, this hardware has never been used and has only been gently handled since it was received in 2007. The DS has been decorated with an Orcs & Elves console skin. The signature appears to have been made with a silver permanent marker, yet it is advised that the buyer not handle the system, since it will degrade the quality of the signature. The system is for use in North America, therefore any accessories, such as AC adapter are designed for 110V power outlets.

Japan Crisis Gets N4G Fanboys To Stop Arguing and Give To Charity

It seems as if the impossible as happened. The hardened hearts of one of the world’s most virulent gaming communities has been softened by the recent crisis in Japan, and it’s warmed our trolling souls.

RipTen is one of the outlets that helped build N4G (News 4 Gamers) way back when and our articles still contribute to the constant flow of their aggregated gaming stories daily. While the N4G community has become widely known as a place home to console fanboy flamewars and trolling the likes of which hasn’t been seen even in Orgrimmar – it seems that this recent catastrophe has brought out the best in them, as they have started to dig deep and give to Japan relief efforts.

N4G’s community manager, the lovely Cathlin Sentz, better known as “Cat” has taken it upon herself to get the community involved with the relief effort, and the response has been surprisingly and overwhelmingly positive.

Here is what she had to say:

Hey, N4Gers! A rather serious post for you here, though one I think we can all tackle with vigor. The devastation in Japan is difficult for most of us to imagine, but what we have seen and heard makes us want to help however we can. For most of us, so far from the disaster, we won’t ever feel like we can do enough.

Below you will find a list of organizations that are active in Japan disaster relief. We aren’t advocating any of these charities over another, but have sought to provide you with a respectable list – please do your own research so you can give responsibly!

We, N4G, have donated $3000 to MSF (Medicins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders) on behalf of the N4G community. MSF currently has several teams in Northern Japan, with more teams on the way. Video Game Day Brings Reach, BlOps and MvC3 To NYC in February

Are you and your friends competitive gamers living in the NYC area? Do you want to give back to the community? Well, listen up.

Our friends in the NY gaming press will be holding a fundraising event on February 19th featuring some of the biggest hits from 2010 and one of the soon to be biggest hits of 2011.

The event will feature competitive tournaments of Halo: Reach, Call of Duty: Black Ops, and Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Prizes will be awarded. Funds raised will be given to charity.

Here’s the details from the guys at DS:

Next month, OutBreak Youth and DualShockers will be coming together to bring a videogame fundraising event on February 19th, 2011 with doors opening at 10am EST, and it will be located on 87-47 111th Street, Richmond Hill, New York. Video Game Day 2011 will have a $5 dollar cover charge to play games the whole day, and the money raised will be put completely …toward bringing a positive influence to the urban youth in the community.

Video Game Day 2011 will include videogame tournaments for Call of Duty Black Ops, Halo: Reach and Marvel vs. Capcom 3. The Black Ops and Halo tournaments will be 4 vs. 4 games, and teams can start signing up as soon as possible. Please note that a team can only sign up for one of the two tournaments throughout the day. Signups for the MvsC3 tournament will be done the day of the event. Prizes will be given to each member of the 1st place teams on Black Ops and Halo, and the 1st place winner of MvsC3.

Be sure to check out the event Facebook page and let them know you’re coming – there should be a few hundred gamers at least – so come on down and live it up for a good cause. I’ll be there.

Portal Gun Sells For Over $14,000 At Child’s Play Auction

Yesterday, the Child’s Play organization held it’s annual action in Seattle. Among the items sold was a Portal Gun replica that fetched over $14,000.

Other notable auctions included the Omegaclaw from PAX 2010 and an 1-day internship at Penny Arcade. In total, $183,000 was raised – bringing the charity’s yearly fundraising total to over $1.1 million.

$183K RAISED FOR SICK CHILDREN AT CHILD’S PLAY GALA AND AUCTION

Donations from Gamers Already Passed the $1 Million Mark

SEATTLE – Dec. 8, 2010 – The gamer community raised $183,000 at the annual Child’s Play Gala and Auction.

The gamer community gathered to bid on rare and geektastic items to raise money to make the holidays brighter for kids in children hospitals across the globe. Items ranged from the Valve mega collection with a lifetime Steam code to a one day internship at Penny Arcade. Top items at the auction included the Omegaclaw from PAX 2010 and the Portal Gun that both went for more than $14,000.

The proceeds from the gala and auction add to donations already contributed by gamers around the world, many organizing their own events and fundraising activities in their own cities. Desert Bus for Hope presented a check for $207,000 to Child’s Play at the event. In total, Child’s Play has raised more than $1.1 million this year.

“Every year we are blown away by the fantastic items and incredibly generous bids at the gala and auction,” said Kristin Lindsay, Foundation Coordinator for Child’s Play. “Even more heart warming is the thousands of gamers that can’t attend the gala but organize their own local fundraising. It’s this grassroots community activity the accounts for the majority of Child’s Play donations.”

Started in 2003, Child’s Play http://www.childsplaycharity.org, supported by the entire video game community, has raised more than $7 million dollars in toys, games and cash for hospitalized kids since its inception. In addition to hospitals in the U.S., gamers contributing to Child’s Play serve hospitals in the U.K, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Egypt.

Activision Donates One Million To Veterans From Black Ops Sales

Activison has announced that they will be donating one million dollars from the sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops to help find jobs for our veterans. They hope this donation will help to transition our troops back into civilian life by funding job training and placement.

SANTA MONICA, Calif., Nov. 11, 2010 /PRNewswire/ – Recognizing that the private sector is as responsible as government in solving the issue of veterans’ unemployment, Activision Publishing, Inc. Super Meat Boy Charity Stream Raises $2000

Yesterday, not only was Super Meat Boy music creator, Danny B, donating half of soundtrack proceeds to Multiple Sclerosis research, but our friends over at Destructoid held a charity event as well. Dtoid’s Jonathan Holmes streamed himself and a few others playing Super Meat Boy from beginning to end in order to raise money for MS research.

Once Danny B heard of the event, he offered 100% of all proceeds go to charity as long as the stream was running. The stream was only meant to last a few hours, but everyone was having so much fun, it went on for half the day!! To encourage everyone to buy the soundtrack or donate directly, Jonathan Holmes would do a community driven dare for each set amount of donations received. Unspeakable things happened such as armpit licking and toe sucking. Some of them scared me, some of them turned me on.

During the event, Tommy and Edmund of Team Meat called in and answered questions from the chatroom. Something I have always wondered was finally answered. “Why does Bandage Girl leave a trail behind her?” Tommy’s answer, “Unicorn Jizz.”

By the end of the event, over $2000 was raised for MS research. Earlier within the stream, Edmund promised to reveal a PC version only secret character for Super Meat Boy which is coming at the end of November.

Once the $2000 mark was hit, Edmund provided the chat with this information: Captain Viridian from indie game VVVVVV will be exclusive to the PC version! If you haven’t played the game, it’s another balls-hard platformer in the same spirit as Super Meat Boy. You can also check out the image Edmund provided here.

Our managing editor, Dave Oshry, even bought soundtracks for every member of the RipTen staff. Today is the last day to purchase the soundtrack and have half of your money count toward a good cause, so get to it! If you don’t, you will feel guilty for the rest of your life! David Jaffe and Team Auction Off Autographed Copy of Twisted Metal For Charity

PlayStation Museum is auctioning off a copy of the first Twisted Metal for the original PlayStation on Ebay. What makes this auction worthwhile is not just the fact that this copy of Twisted Metal has been autographed by David Jaffe, Scott Campbell, and other members of the original Twisted Metal Team — but it’s for a very noble cause.

The auction is for a charitable purpose as 100% of the proceeds will go toward the benefit of the American Cancer Society. The highest bidder will receive a framed copy of the game signed, and ready for display in any gamer’s collection. The game has been framed for obvious reasons, but anyone who would crack it open and play it obviously has no idea it’s true value. :-)

It’s a piece of history for any Twisted Metal or David Jaffe fan out there, and a noble cause for anyone willing to pay to add it to their collection.

As the son of a cancer survivor, I am glad the proceeds will be going to benefit the ACS. In fact, I may bid on this myself.

Third Annual Zeldathon Raising Funds for the National Children’s Advocacy Center

The 2010 charity Zelda marathon is revving its engine today, ready to get off to a flying start today (Monday, June 5th) at 6pm EST. The marathon will run for 72 hours, and will be raising money for the National Children’s Advocacy Center, a charity that is doing its bit to prevent child abuse.

The Zeldathon team will be playing all of the major console Zelda titles (The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Link To The Past, Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess), back to back, for 72 hours. You can watch them do it live right here or indeed on the Justin.TV channel. Of course, you can donate to help them reach their goal here.

“Our goal is to raise over $1,000 for the NCAC,” said Pablo Penton, co-founder of Zeldathon. “We’ve met our goal the past two years and we have no doubt we can do it again with the support of all our viewers.”

The Zeldathon video game marathon began in August of 2008 when two FIU students, Pablo Penton and Sean Gonzalez, watched a video game marathon based around the Super Mario games.
“We were quite impressed with how much money they raised and the fun they had,” Penton said. “We figured we could do the same.”

Jessica Chobot’s Topless Chest Mold Gets God of War Paint Job For Charitable Auction

IGN’s Jessica Chobot strikes a pose after recieving topless plastering. The mold shown above was then carefully removed and hand painted with a God of War III motif by a Sony artist Erik San Juan.

The finished product titled “Goddess of War” (shown below) will be on display at the Gnomon Gallery in Hollywood, California as part of an exhibit featuring the art of God of War III. Upon the show’s completion, the mold will be put up for auction with all proceeds benefiting the Keep-A-Breast Foundation.

Somewhere out there, former Ripten writer, Michael Geslani, is wishing he took up art in college. The man loved him some Jessica Chobot.

Zeldathon Gaming Marathon to Raise Money for the National Children’s Advocacy Center (NCAC)

It seems like every week there’s a new gaming marathon that’s raising money for a new charity, but it’s not a bad trend. We here at Ripten love helping others, and as long as these gaming marathons continue, we’ll continue to support them. The latest is from Zeldathon, a team of students from Florida International University’s radio station who will host a marathon to raise money for the National Children’s Advocacy Center tonight at 6PM EST.

In the past, they’ve raised money for Child’s Play & the NCAC with success, and they’re going for another run, this time with 14 SNES games for 48 hours straight. If you can, tune in tonight to watch them play through Sunday, and donate whatever you can to help ‘em out.

SingSterling Charity Is Now Live!

Chelsea here, posting a bit of news for John, who currently has his hands full with SingSterling. What is SingSterling? Why, it is Destructoid editor Jim Sterling’s 24-hour SingStar sing-a-thon for charity of course!

Right now Jim has only raised about half of the amount he’s aiming for, so he’ll only be singing for 12 hours. However, if the full $5,000 is raised before the end of the 12 hours, he’ll not only keep singing for the full 24 but also complete his singing marathon with Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.”

As if that wasn’t incentive enough, Ripten.com’s own John Kershaw seems to have joined in on a bit of the fun. He’s there to live stream the whole ordeal and grab the second SingStar mic for some duets. If you ever wanted to see John belt out some 80′s tunes, now’s the time. And there will be plenty of music to pick from, seeing as John went out last night and bought a copy of every available version of SingStar.

With Halloween just around the corner and with a projected $5 billion in holiday sales, the charitable folks at GoodSociety are hoping to help out a lot of needy children.

“We did the quick math,” says Fashion Director Quang Dinh, “five billion dollars would feed over one hundred million starving children for an entire year. I love Halloween more than most, but something needed to be done.”

The site itself is quite impressive. As I was browsing the 500+ women’s costumes, I saw a lot of outfits I’ve never seen before. Their Jessica Rabbit costume is amazing, and I am unbelievably tempted to drop the $100 for the pleasure of walking around all night as a sexy, red-headed vixen with Furry tendencies (I mean, she did marry a rabbit).

The kid’s and men’s costumes are a bit less expensive, so don’t be discouraged by some of the high price tags on the women’s costumes (though all women’s costumes tend to be pricey, no matter where you go). Again, their selection is HUGE and they have plenty of options for those of you who want something strictly game or nerd-culture related.
