UKIE to Launch PC Download Chart

The UK’s games trade body UKIE has announced that a beta version of its PC Download Chart will launch in February.

The chart comes thanks to both UKIE and “Disney Interactive Studios, Focus Multimedia, Get Games, Green Man Gaming, Mastertronic, NCsoft, Sega, Square-Enix, Ubisoft, Warner Bros and other top PC game publishers and digital distributors.” This is the first time a digital chart has been attempted.

After this PC chart is established the body will move on to PSN and Xbox Live charts.

Jo Twist, CEO of UKIE said:

Having this digital data alongside our UKIE Games Charts for boxed products will allow the games industry to lobby government even more effectively and allow our members to make informed and fact based commercial decisions.

It will certainly be interesting to see exactly how well digital downloads are doing. I rarely buy disc-based PC games, and I’m sure many other are like me- so I’m expecting big numbers. Let us know what you think below.

Modern Warfare 3 Tops Skyrim in UK Charts

The UK charts are in, and guess what- Modern Warfare 3 did pretty well.

Interestingly the RPG (and therefore nerd-fest) Skyrim has made number 2 in the charts, ahead of even Battlefield 3. There have been adverts in big numbers for all three but it seems people fancied a bit of swords and sorcery this week in the UK.

The charts are below, and as usual I’m slightly annoyed that Zumba Fitness and Wii Party are still beating the likes of Rage and Forza 4. Stupid British people, buy good games.

Test Drive Unlimited 2 Nabs Top Spot on UK Chart

Test Drive Unlimited 2 has beaten Dead Space 2 to the top of the UK chart this week, making a successful debut.

After just a week on sale Test Drive Unlimited 2 has nabbed the top spot from last week’s top entry Dead Space 2, with previous chart-topper LittleBigPlanet 2 dropping all the way to 10th place.

Dead Space 2 Retains UK Sales Chart Lead

Dead Space 2 has remained atop the UK chart for the second week in a row.

The game shot to the top spot upon release last week, beating out even the mighty FIFA 11.

Nintendo’s offerings – Mario Vs Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem and Mario Sports Mix have failed to chart this week, taking 11th and 12th places.

Fallout: New Vegas Number One in the UK

It would seem the Englishmen of our world would rather fight mutants with scavenged weapons in a post apocalyptic wasteland rather then take on “Opfor” in the middle east, or so the UKIE GfK Chart-Track All Formats Top 40 charts are reporting.

Fallout New Vegas is currently in the top spot for sales in the UK, not only topping the other games on the list but beating out Fallout 3′s week one sales by 29%. Stay tuned to RipTen for our upcoming and definitive video review of Fallout: New Vegas!

Mafia II Tops UK Charts

Mafia II has shot to the top of the UK charts this week, with the biggest game launch since Red Dead Redemption 14 weeks ago.

The Xbox 360 version took 52% of the total sales, with the PS3 taking 41% and the PC taking 7%. Meanwhile, Red Dead Redemption, Kane and Lynch, and Toy Story 3 are still doing well, only slipping a place from last week. Wii Sports Resort is also doing fairly well, still.

Microsoft and Sony Produce Charts to Prove Motion Control Superiority

Yesterday, Microsoft finally came forth with an official price announcement for their hopeful hit of the holiday season, the Kinect motion-control camera peripheral. And while some balked at the $150 price tag, Microsoft felt it was fully justified.

To prove their point, they even went so far as to take a page out of Sony’s book of some years ago, and provided a chart to show exactly why Kinect is such a great value when stacked against its competition:

Of course, as Kotaku and others have pointed out, there are some flaws in Microsoft’s math, such as the inclusion of the Wii Balance Board, or the fact that Wii Sports Resort is now included in the basic Wii package. As they note:

One could easily argue either end of the cost spectrum for both consoles, the reality is that the cost and your mileage with any of these systems is going to depend entirely on what you want to get out of the experience.

However, that hasn’t stopped Sony from an attempt at retaliation, and what better way than with a chart of their own, one which is undoubtedly unbiased in its effort to prove the superiority of Move. From the Sony Holiday 2010 catalog, via Kotaku:

In this instance, however, the topic of price is avoided, as Sony focuses more on the features each platform has to offer, plus a list of games consumers can expect to play on theirs.

Japanese Hardware Rankings – All Hail the PSP

Tables continue to be turned this week as the formerly dead-in-the-water PSP fended off all contenders for this week’s sales crown. Most people will point out that the PSP was never exactly a failure, it just hasn’t had the monstrous success that the DS has enjoyed.

With the PSP climbing to the top of the heap, we might be seeing the beginning of a trend, though DS fans might beg to differ come time for Dragon Quest IX. In the meantime, the Wii and DS round out the Top 3 as usual, while the PS3 and PS2 battle it out for rights to fourth place.

Then there’s the poor, cellar-dwelling Xbox 360, the Kansas City Royals of the Japanese hardware racket. At this point, is there anything Microsoft can do over here?
