Nvidia Reveals Wired 3DVision Glasses For $99 – Why Are You Holding Out?

With 3D gaming already being more and more accessible with the recent announcement of the GTX 560, Nvidia has announced that they are adding a pair of wired glasses to their 3DVision lineup.

Offering the same level of high quality that Nvidia is known for, the new glasses cost a meager $99 US. These new wired glasses come with a 10-foot long USB cable that affords easy connection to any PC or notebook capable of displaying 3D gameplay or video.

The hardware reveal is hot on the heels of Nvidia announcing their partnership with YouTube, allowing users a central location to upload all their 3D gameplay to share with the world.

Phil Eisler, 3D Vision General Manager at Nvidia commented on the announcement saying:

“3D fans have been waiting for more affordable glasses, and we’re expecting our new 3D Vision wired glasses to hit the sweet spot for them”.

The new wired googlies will be available late June 2011.

Sony Cuts the Price of PS Plus… Perfect Timing

Owners of the Playstation 3 console have been disappointed as of late, solely due to the ongoing downtime of Sony’s Playstation Network.

Well in coincidental timing, Sony has just announced that they’re slashing the price of Playstation Plus, giving members the chance to buy 15 months of the subscription for the price of 12.

However this isn’t just applicable to new members, as existing members will get the free three months for free, too. Try saying that 50 times…

Target Website Error Lists PS3 Console for $40 – Gets Overloaded With Orders (UPDATE)

Oh Well, Was Worth a Shot ...

Ever wanted to buy a Playstation 3 yet you don’t have the asking price? Well Target seems to have slipped up and due to their error you can now order your very own brand new PS3 for a mind-blowing $40!

Target is currently selling the Playstation 3 units for $39.99 with $15.99 shipping, and there’s numerous reports of people actually buying these through Amazon as well. Obviously this is some crazy mistake, however the official Target website is also listing the units at $39.99, so maybe it’s some sort of crazy fire sale courtesy of Target and Amazon. We doubt it.

If you look closely on the Target website, you will see the description is for the new PSMove sharpshooter attachment and the weight is only 2.4lbs. So something is obviously mislabeled.

We just ordered three via Amazon and got an order confirmation email saying that we did in fact order three Playstation 3 Consoles - we’ll keep you updated as the story unfolds. Someone is likely getting fired over this.

Gaming Pet Peeve: Cheap NPC Tactics

That’s the number of times my squad mates and I died during the derelict Collector vessel mission in Mass Effect 2. After discovering that we were lured in to a trap and Collector forces descended on us, Samara and Miranda quickly went down at the hands of two Collector Drones, a Scion, and Harbinger. I played through the first tier of that encounter three separate times in the day so as to avoid damaging my controller, the game, or even the room I’d confined myself to.

As much as I love the combat in that game, it suffers from one constant enemy that other games use to a fault: shock troops that swarm you in packs. The Scions are a close third to the Husks and Praetorians in terms of the most annoying enemies in any game ever; the shockwaves they produce take down way more health than is needed, and their little Husk friends come out of nowhere and start flailing their arms at you like crazed fans at a Justin Bieber concert.

Worse, Bioware nerfed the radar from the first game, saving it only for when you pause to bring up the weapon or power wheels, when it was perfectly fine the way it was. It’s removal can lead to several frustrating deaths as mentioned above; if you’re in a hectic firefight with an enemy right in front of you, why wouldn’t you want the radar to be visible at all times, so as to avoid being snuck up on?

My anger doesn’t just fly toward Mass Effect 2. Over the past three or four years, I’ve played hundreds of games where it seems the developers simply want you to see the ‘You Are Dead’ screen. From Halo’s irritating habit of not making you aware that there’s a giant purple ball in the sky heading for you, oh crap, move out the way–too late, you’re dead– or Call of Duty’s enemies who carry enough grenades on them to host the deadliest game of softball in human history to the demons in Darksiders who will gravitate towards you for an attack even after you’ve dodged it, games are often quickly becoming less about fun and more about trying not to hurl profanities and breaking everything in the room.

Bobby Kotick Wants to Sell You Cut-scenes

Once again, Bobby Kotick is speaking his mind and pissing people off.

The issue with Mr. Kotick is always money. This time he has stated that he would like to charge customers to watch in-game cut scenes featured in Activision’s games. These scenes, already in your purchased copy of that year’s Call of Duty/Guitar Hero, would be able to be download or seen in theaters.

Kotick goes on to say how confident and successful these slapped together “film’s would be. “If we were to go to an audience and say ‘We have this great hour and a half of linear video that we’d like to make available to you at a $20 or $30 price point’ you’d have the biggest opening weekend of any film ever.”

“Within the next five years, you are likely to see us do that. It might be in a partnership with somebody or alone, but there will be a time where we’ll capitalize on the relationship we have with our audience; deliver them something that is really extraordinary and let them consume it directly through us instead of theatrical distribution. If we were to deliver a film digitally this way, I’d say an extremely high percentage would then go to the theater and watch it again.”

I am aware of the costs for a high quality cinematic in a game. The problem at hand is these scenes bridge together the gameplay. How can you take those cut scenes out of context and charge for them? Especially when many cut scenes aren’t very good, let alone film quality. Activision would have to make more scenes to piece together missing content when translated from game to film, which will cost more money. Also, when was the last time you paid “$20-30” to watch a movie, even in 3D?

Don’t You Miss The Good Old Days?

Classic PC games on the cheap? If you deem that statement worth your while, it would be prudent of you to take a look at GOG.com (Good Old Games). What started as a side-project from the guys that made PC RPG, The Witcher, managed to take it as far as making it an entity of its own. Although not yet live, we do know that Codemasters and Interplay are in with GOG.com as well as the existence of an early access beta.

I want to liken it to Gametap, with some very important differences. Firstly, no exclusive content or at least none that’s been announced or hinted at, thus far. It’s not on a subscription model; you pay for games, you keep them, and are free to download and re-download as much as you see fit. And most importantly: all games have had their insides turned out in hopes of creating the maximum amount of compatibility between both Windows XP and Vista.

If you yearn for the olden days of PC gaming, this looks to be one of the best ways of going about it. If interested, there’s an early access beta go to GOG.com and sign up prior to September 7, 2008 before 12:00am (EDT, convert time zone accordingly.)
