Cliffy B Will Reveal a New Epic Games IP at the VGAs

Gears of War 3 ‘RAAM’s Shadow’ DLC Announced – Available Dec 13th

Epic has announced a new set of Gears of War 3 DLC titled “ RAAM’s Shadow” which will be available December 13th.

Differing from the Horde Command Pack which is available at the first of next month, RAAM’s Shadow brings an additional 3 hour campaign mission, six new multiplayer characters, the Chocolate Weapon Set and an additional 250 Gamerscore. As a special treat, gamers will be able to play as the legendary General RAAM to “storm the human stronghold”.

RAAM’s Shadow takes place in Gears’ storied past and will feature a few familiar faces including Lt. Kim and Tai Kaliso. The story from the press release:

“RAAM’s Shadow drops players into the events of Sera post-Emergence Day, as Zeta Squad is enlisted to evacuate Ilima City and protect the citizens against a Locust Kryll storm. Taking on the infamous Locust leader from Gears 1, General RAAM, Zeta is led by Michael Barrick (from Gears comics fame) and comprised of familiar faces such as Lt. Minh Young Kim (Gears 1) and Tai Kaliso (Gears 2), and also includes a new female comrade, Alicia Valera.”

RAAM’s Shadow will run you 1,200 Microsoft Points, unless you own the Gears of War 3 season pass which includes the first four DLC at 30% off. Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski made a few comments about the season pass and what will be included in this batch of DLC:

“When we announced the Gears 3 Season Pass, we immediately started getting hundreds of questions from fans about what the game add-ons would be. We’re really excited to be lifting the curtain on the first two releases, first with the Horde Command Pack and now with RAAM’s Shadow, which gives fans a new perspective on the Gears universe and is also the biggest DLC release we’ve ever made.

I don’t know about you, but extra campaign DLC definitely piques my interest.

Highlights From The Gears of War 3 Launch Event In Times Sqaure

When it comes to games like Gears of War and Halo, Microsoft doesn’t fuck around. They go big, and I mean big. In case you couldn’t make it out to the huge launch event in NYC the other night, we got you covered.

Inside the Best Buy theater is where all the action took place, and some lucky gamers were able to make it inside and play Gears of War 3 hours before it launched. Below are some of the highlights from the event we hope you enjoy. And yes, be very jealous of that “Epic” chopper that was given away. Trust me when I say, the pictures don’t do it justice. Gears of War vs. Resistance – An Epic Rivalry Concludes and Everybody Wins

In early November 2006, one of the greatest franchise fights of this console generation began: Gears of War vs. Resistance. It started as a battle between exclusives to showcase the capabilities of each respective console. Surprisingly, both series had many parallels and further cemented the rivalry by releasing each successive game in the same month, with release dates often less than two weeks apart. Two Sci-fi shooters designed by respected studios featuring characters fighting for humanity’s survival against far more powerful mutated alien invaders. While there is no doubt that the Gears of War series proved more dominant, the Resistance series has more than held its own in many respects as one of the PlayStation 3′s standout franchises.

The rivalry has included six games, three from each studio: Gears of War, Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3 from Epic vs. Resistance: Fall of Man, Resistance 2 and Resistance 3 from Insomniac Games.

Origins

Back in November 2006, the Xbox 360 had been basking in the sun for a year as the only “next gen” console. This was soon to change with the coming release of the of the Nintendo Wii and PS3. Out of the new contenders the PS3 was considered the more likely rival with expected greater computing power and graphical capabilities.

Prior to the PS3′s release, two major exclusives were being trumpeted to showcase the system’s prowess : one being the now infamous Killzone 2 “gameplay” trailer and the other being Resistance: Fall of Man. Both were hyped to be superior to anything found on the Xbox 360.

ORLY?!

At the time, Microsoft had not released a console defining game. Halo 3 was still in development and would not debut until 2007. Microsoft knew they needed a champion – a showcase title to release as a counter to the PlayStation 3. Luckily a young and ambitious developer from Epic games named Cliff Bleszinski had an idea for a 3rd person shooter which involved using cover and tactics. It was a new approach Cliff came up with after enjoying paintball outings with friends. Rather than a simple backstory, the ambitious Cliffy B created a complex sci-fi adventure featuring inhabitants of the earthlike planet of Sera in a desperate situation fighting for existence against a recently emerged overwhelming menace – the Locust. As the first Xbox 360 game using Epic’s propriety Unreal 3 engine, early in development Gears looked amazing and after it won several “Xbox 360 Game of Show” awards at E3 2oo5, Microsoft was sure they found their champion.

Sony was also in a desperate position. The PS3 launch needed marquee titles and as the launch date came closer more than a few expected titles would be delayed. Luckily Insomniac’s Resistance: Fall of Man would be ready. Resistance was developed as a “Halo Killer”. Insomoniac looked at the popular FPS’s of the time: obviously the console king Halo and World War 2 shooters such as Call of Duty. What they created was an alternate timeline sci-fi shooter which took place in 1950′s England. This world, while similar to ours, never experienced the second World War. Instead they faced an alien invasion which extended beyond simple miltary conquest with futuristic weapons, as the enemy Chimera could spread by virus. The focus would be entertaining and innovative weapons. Sony had found its first “killer app”.

The stage was set for battle with the success of each competing title tied at least some part to the success of their consoles. The two Sci-fi shooters with more than a few similarities debuted just a week apart.

Resistance: Fall of Man vs. Gears of War

Gears of War debuted first on November 7th, 2006 to universal critical acclaim with an aggregate score of 94% on Metacritic. Critics praised the game for its graphics, solid gameplay, innovative cover system, multiplayer and reload mechanics. Resistance released ten days later on November 17th as the most celebrated launch title for the PS3. Fall of Man received generally positive reviews from critics. The game received an average score of 86% on Metacritic as reviewers enjoyed the game’s setting, story, variety of weapons and 40 player multiplayer.

Although Gears of War outscored Resistance by an average 8% points, many critics were divided as to which exclusive was superior. Furthermore, Gears lead in sales which could easily be attributed to the higher install base at the time of Xbox 360s.

Screw You Major Nelson!

Head to head, both had their strengths and weaknesses. Critics praised the story in Resistance while many described Gears as being “shallow” and a “missed opportunity”. Clearly, Gears had better graphics and distinguished itself with a excellent cover system, but Resistance had more interesting and varied weapons. Both games had excellent but far different multiplayer components however.

All in all both titles could claim victory because both had accomplished their individual goals. Gears of War raised the bar for console graphics proving that Microsoft’s console would be able to compete, while Resistance gave the the PS3 the killer app it would need to sell consoles in the first place.

Like with any good fight, the first round ended, both combatants had gotten a feel for each other and adjusted their tactics for round two.

If Gears 3 Sells Well, Cliff Bleszinski Says Another Game is, “Business 101″

RipTen founder Chad Lakkis is a well known Gears of War fanatic. He famously drove over six hours to get himself the original Gears of War and his fandom has only grown since then. As an artist, he’s been responsible for things like the Gears of War movie poster and the Maple Leaf of War, but it’s always the games themselves that he’s looked forward to messing around with the most.

Recently, Microsoft gave Chad the chance to test out Gears of War 3 – what they didn’t tell him was that he’d be locked in a room with Epic Games design director, Cliff Bleszinski.

RipTen has spoken with Cliff on several occasions and we can usually be found bothering him on twitter, but this was the first time Chad had the chance to sit down and spend some quality time with the one and only Cliffy B.

After being so impressed with the game that we gave it two Best of E3 awards – Chad had a few questions that Cliff was happy to answer:

RipTen: I liked the variety in Gears 2 overall.

Cliff B: Yeah. Variety is key.

RipTen: How does the variety in Gears 3 stack up?

Cliff B: Basically it gets back to crunchy combat bowls. There was an image that went around on the internet a while back that showed a FPS map design from 1993 of DOOM E1M1. It showed this really cool kind of porous environment that you could kind of explore around a bit, and then it showed 2010 and it was like ‘line, cut scene, line cut scene, line, cutscene, line, cutscene.’ And I feel like, you know, not to slag our old work, because we’re still proud of it, but there were sections of Gears 2 were a little more of the latter image and less of the prior image.

Cliff B: Gears works when it’s the fountain fight in Gears 1, or the East Baracade Academy first fight where you go in and ‘ok what’s my strategy? I’m gonna go to the right. I found a Long Shot. I’m going to try sniping. Okay, that didn’t work. I died. Respawn, go to the left. Oh, I found a Torque Bow in the closet and I’m going to use that… and then I killed the Boomer and I got his Boomshot for the next wave of enemies. It’s kind of a free-form crunchy combat bowl and we’re going to get back to that a lot.

So environmentally, I assure you that if you were to map out the color tone of the entire campaign across the board, you’re going to see quite a bit of variety in there, from the different types of villages you can go to. You saw in the War Pigs Trailer, there’s actually a level that’s under water as well. So there’s lots of really cool variety in there.

RipTen: Now, when you design the weapons for Gears – what’s the thought process that goes into your weapon design? You’ve always had unique weapons implementation.

Cliff B: Well, I think the pendulum goes back and forth between just regular ol’ guns and unique weapons. I mean, I’ve wanted to see a Digger type launcher weapon for a while right? We’re not the first company to do that also, but I think our implementation is great. The mentality for Gears 3 is to just add more regular guns, right? That’s where the Pendulum Lancer came from. I mean, you know – different recoil rate, a different clip size, different damage, different stopping power – these are things that gun nuts just cream over.

So, sometimes it’s okay to just have more interesting rifles that are just guns, because we have plenty of unique kind of goofy things that go on, as far as the different weapons.

RipTen: You guys are talking about this being the end of a trilogy, the last of three parts. If the fan interest is still there, considering the impact of the characters you have developed and the following they have, are you open to continuing the brand in some way?

Cliff B: Well, there’s always the Peter Jackson route, right? Do The Hobbit or something like that. I mean, we’re business people. Gears 1 and 2 sold about 6 million copies, so if this game comes out and, God willing, sells 8 or 10 million it would be completely dumb to not do another one, right? It’s just business 101. So, I mean, the key is figuring out what’s appropriate. What makes sense for this connected world that we’re moving into? So, that remains to be seen. That’s the million dollar question…

Gears of War 3 Epic Media Blowout – Videos, Gameplay and Much More

Epic Games has just announced……wait they didn’t announce anything. Unless you were out partying all weekend you would know the full version of Gears of War 3 has been leaked online.

Following the leak, tons of videos have made their way onto Youtube showing tons of footage from the game. Now of course we’re going to keep this spoiler free but that doesn’t mean there’s not a shit ton of content to share with you. Keep in mind these videos may be the full game but it’s still unfinished and bugs will be present.

This video confirms that Gridlock will be making an appearance in Gears of War 3. It also got a huge make over and looks even grittier than before. Wether or not this will be a shipped map, or if Epic will offer a “Flashback Map Pack” code with copies of the game similar to how they did Gears of War 2 is still unknown. Just knowing this classic Gears map is making a return is good enough for me.

This next video showcases a new outfit for Marcus titled “Civilian Marcus” and shows off boat load of additional unlocks. Players will receive exclusive weapon skins for playing Gears of War on PC, Bulletstorm, and all three Gears of War campaigns. Avatar items is also listed which suggest the game will feature Avatar Awards which is nice because many games don’t support this feature. Last but not least the infamous Seriously 3.0 is a confirmed achievement, but we really didn’t need to tell you that right? Seriously……..we didn’t need to right?

Previously noted in the last video was certain exclusive unlockable skins for your arsenal. This video displays quite a few of the weapon skins but no details on how to unlock them. The skins range from a beautiful nice set of flowers to a blood red covered Lancer. Then there’s your classic camos like urban, jungle, pink etc.

One of the new weapons announced was the Vulcan Cannon, however Epic didn’t go into much detail at all. So now I present you with this beautiful fucking beast of a weapon and just how dangerous this baby is. Words can not describe this beauty, just watch.

Cliff Asks Lauren To Be His Co-op Buddy For Life, She Says “Yeah! Wooo! Bring It On, Sucka!”

I would have reported on this sooner but I was out doing important pre-wedding things for my own magical day, which is creeping up on me faster than a mob of angry Tickers.

In case you missed it, Epic Games Design Director, Cliff Bleszinski, asked his lovely girlfriend, Lauren Berggren, to be his “co-op buddy for life.” The image above is visual proof. And yes, it snows in New York in June. Shut up and go with it. Here’s the Twitter run down:

I wish I thought up something half as creative — considering I just threw the box at my fiance in bed after she shot down my efforts to take her to dinner, go for a walk, and even go on a weekend mini-vacation. Co-op buddy request in the middle of Central Park is way cooler. Damn you Cliff, showing all us lesser nerds how it’s done!

Not sure if the couple has a date set yet, but here’s to hoping that he and Lauren find the strength to laugh through the journey that lies ahead! When I say journey, I am talking about two hour drives for five minute meetings about chair covers, enduring family member bickering over whether or not to invite your third cousin Hilda, and countless sit downs with photographers that reek of Old Spice and lemonade. Oh, who am I kidding, they’ve got people for that.

Gears of War 3 – New Beta Info with Dates and Details

Epic games has finally given definitive info on how to participate in the Gears of War 3 Beta. Essentially, pre-order the game from Gamestop and you can participate in the beta when it begins on April 25th and runs until May 15th.

Those who purchased the Bulletstorm Epic Edition will get access one week earlier on April 18.

As mentioned before, participants in the Beta will have access to all sorts of unlockable goodies. The Gears of War 3 Beta Unlockables include:

Beta Tester Medal – Complete one match in the beta to unlock the Beta Tester medal, which will carry over to your gamer profile in the final game. The Beta Tester title will be featured in the “Gears 3″ multiplayer lobby as well.
Thrashball Cole – Complete 50 matches in any game type to unlock the Thrashball Cole character variant in the beta. Once unlocked, complete 10 matches as Thrashball Cole during the beta and the character will carry over to your gamer profile in the final game.
Gold-Plated Retro Lancer – Show your ultimate “Gears of War” fandom by unlocking the Gold-Plated Retro Lancer. Complete 90 matches in any game type to unlock it for the beta, and score 100 kills with it once unlocked to carry the exclusive weapon skin over to your gamer profile in the final game.
Flaming Hammerburst – Complete one match by Sunday, April 24 and unlock this weapon variant.
Flaming Lancer – Complete one match during the week of April 25 and unlock this weapon variant.
Flaming Sawed-Off Shotgun – Complete one match during the week of May 2 to unlock this weapon variant.
Flaming Gnasher Shotgun – Complete one match during the week of May 9 to unlock this weapon variant.

Gears of War 3 – Boxart, Screens, Open Beta Information and MORE

Hold on to your seats true believers – Gears 3 is gearing up for a September release. Sure that’s still quite a while away, but it’s never too early get wrapped up in the HYPE!

Today Epic has released some very epic Gears of war 3 information which includes Screenshots, Boxart, Open Beta information (yep, OPEN Beta), multiplayer info and MORE!

First of all, the beta will be open to all in mid-April and will feature three new multiplayer modes across four new maps. Excited yet? You bet your ass I am! Additionally, gamers can vote on the maps they want to play at the Gears of War Facebook page. Playing the beta can unlock in-game content upon the game’s release on September 20th.

The Beta multiplayer modes include:

King of the Hill – Combines with Annex and simplified with a new user interface and ring that moves around the map.
Capture the Leader – Capture and hold either Chairman Prescott or Queen Myrrah. The leaders aren’t useless though as they can see through walls and coordinate their teammates. Also, everyone gets one smoke grenade that can be used to force the player holding the leader to let go.
Team Deathmatch – Each team gets 15 respawns. Once those are gone, it is game over for the team that gets killed first.

Two of maps that will be available for the beta have been decided – Stadium and Supermarket. The other two are to be decided on facebook. The options include: Mercy, Old Town, Overpass and Trenches.

Beta Unlockable content includes a Retro Golden Lancer and Cole Train’s Thrashball uniform. The Gold Lancer will be unlocked by playing 90 matches or getting 100 kills with the impaling machine gun. Cole’s Thrashball outfit will be unlocked once you play 70 matches of any game type. You get to keep him in the retail version if get 83 matches total. Check it out in the screenshots below.

Last but not least, Epic has confirmed Gears 3 Multiplayer will be off of Dedicated Servers. Great news for anyone who had to deal with laggy Gear 2 matches.

All and all awesome news! You’ve got to hand it to Cliffy B, Gears of War 3 looks to be another great Epic game!

Bulletstorm is out and it’s time to ‘kill with skill’ boys and girls. More than just your average “Space Marine” shooter, Bulletstorm is a FPS that’s all about creatively killing your foes … and saying the word Dicktits!

The more complex the skill, the higher the value of the kill. We have the full list of Bulletstorm skillshots, a description of ‘how to’ and their values.

Skillshots are worth the first value for only the first kill. Most then become worth 1/5 (2nd score)much points for all further kills. For combo skillshots, the ones which involve killing multiple enemies, the point value is 1/5 and multiplied by the number of enemies. For example, killing three enemies at once with X-Ray gives you 500, 300, and 300. Or if you’d already done an X-Ray, you’d get 300 for all three.

As the Bulletstorm approaches, the man with the plan – Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski – has held an Epic competition in anticipation of their upcoming game.

Via the most Epic place on the internet, otherwise known as Twitter, Cliff stated:

Mere moments later, tweets started pouring in. There were Dicktits everywhere!! Tits on dicks!! Dicks on tits!! Tits with dicks and dicks with tits!! There was no end to the mayhem!! RipTen quickly started compiling what we felt were, “The Best of Dicktits” and we are bringing them to you in all their glory:

Bulletstorm – No Co-op, It “Just Broke Down” the Game

Yeah, i know what you are thinking – Bummer. Epic games trialled a co-op mode in Bulletstorm, but cancelled it after it interfered with a key game mechanic.

In a conversation with The Telegraph, Cliff Bleszinski explained why Epic had a change of heart:

“So when we made the decision to go straight campaign, it gave us the chance to put in one-offs that could only be controlled by one player, like the giant robotic dinosaur, where you don’t have to worry about Player 2, or slow motion one-offs that could only occur in a single player game.”

While previously teased to a include a 1-4 player co-op campaign, this can’t be good news to many gamers. Bulletstorm already lacks a multiplayer deathmatch mode which many consider important in a modern shooter. I guess the multiplayer Anarchy mode will have to satiate online games. Anarchy is a horde like mode in which players take on waves of enemies.
