Carrier Command Competition, Win ArmA Series And Take On Helicopters

The independent Czech studio of Bohemia Interactive has launched a competition in celebration of their still-developing Carrier Command. By joining the Carrier Command page on facebook and writing a witty-caption for the banner image on this page, you can win yourself 1 of 5 game-packs containing ArmA X (an anniversary collection of the entire ArmA series) and Take On Helicopters. The competition runs until Monday the 13th of February (GMT+1) so head in and enter now.

Carrier Command was originally released in the 80′s and was a welcome hybrid mix of direct first person control and strategic use of forces. While Bohemia’s foray into strategy and science fiction might seem outlandish, elements of their capability in this area can be understood though the Commander elements in the ArmA series where the player can build bases and give a wide range of orders to AI friendlies. Given the singular vision applied in their other titles (all of which are available in the prize pack) there’s no doubt they’re following a passion which ultimately means a win for the gamer.

I just hope this isn’t pulling assets from delivering ArmA 3.

Rift to Launch World Record Attempt for Most In-Game Marriages

To celebrate the forthcoming addition of Rift’s Ascended Weddings feature, Trion will be attempting to secure a world record for the Most In-Game Marriages in a 24-Hour Period.

Any players who get hitched between 9am PST on Feb 14th and 9am PST on Feb 15th will be logged by the Guinness Book of World Records (although you must still be married by the end of the event to be counted). All those who participate will also receive an exclusive in-game title of ‘Tier of Knots’.

Rift GM’s will also be performing impromptu ceremonies during the attempt, with players able to petition them for that personal touch.

Additionally, Trion is running a competition for real life couples, the winners of which will be treated to a V.I.P. wedding service from Community Manager Elrar, and earn a personalized in-game broadcast following the completion of the ceremony.

To enter, couples need to in 300 words or less tell Trion how online games play a role in your relationship no later than Monday, February 6th at 10am PDT.

Game Publishers: Please Spread Your Game Releases Out Better

Dear Game Publishers,

It goes without saying that I love playing games. A lot of my friends do as well, in fact. I spend a good portion of my free time gaming, and I also find it a good stress reliever. There’s nothing I love more after a long day than turning on my iPod, grabbing my controller, and using a human shield in Saints Row: The Third to unwind.

Now, I want you to take a good look at the gaming schedule from the past year. In the January-May frame, there was Dead Space 2, Bulletstorm, Crysis 2, LA Noire, Portal 2, Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Two Worlds II, LittleBigPlanet 2, Killzone 3, Dragon Age II, and Mortal Kombat, along with a bunch of other games I really don’t feel like listing.

From August to December, we had (deep breath) Deus Ex, Resistance 3, RAGE, Dead Island, Gears 3, Arkham City, Uncharted 3, SKYRIM!!!, Battlefield 3, Modern Warfare 3, Skyward Sword, Saints Row: The Third, Rayman Origins, Halo Anniversary, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, Rocksmith, and Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Last, but not least, here’s what we got for June to July: Infamous 2, Red Faction: Armageddon, Duke Nukem, Catherine, Bastion, and Shadows of the Damned.

Pardon my French but, what the fuck is wrong with you, gaming industry?

Now look, I understand that times are tough. I get that you can’t afford to go on making new IPs whenever you please with shareholders breathing down your necks, and I get that you want to get more money with everything from online passes to “Complete Editions” that make day-one buyers feel like asses. I don’t agree with these things but I get them. What I don’t get is why you continually think that you need to put all your games out either super early or super late in the year while you leave the summer months hung out to dry. Sure, in the winter and fall, people are more likely to be inside as opposed to the summer. But that doesn’t excuse anything. If you’ve got nearly 300 games coming out over the course of 12 months, you should be able to spread them out a little more evenly.

If you don’t believe me, look at Saints Row 3 and Rayman Origins. While I don’t have any doubt that they’re great games–in fact, playing Saints right now, I can confirm it’s a great game –whoever the hell made the call to release these games when they did either doesn’t have a firm grasp on reality, or enjoys taking it to the face. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that, out of all the games in the September-December time frame, those two got hit the heaviest in the wallet. I mean, come on. They go up against Skyrim, Assassin’s Creed, Halo, and Skyward Sword in their opening week. That was a death sentence if I’ve ever heard of one.

Even though a lot of people are out and about during the summer, there are those moments where the weather sucks, our friends are all out of town, or we’re just bored. And what do we do when we’re bored? We either play video games or play video games. It’s also a good fact that video games that release in the summer have a greater chance of getting a sequel. Don’t believe me? Explain why Prototype 2 is coming out. Trust me, it the reason has less to do with it being a revolutionary gaming experience. Tell me how Duke Nukem Forever was number 2 in sales for June. We all know it wasn’t the best game that month. It’s why a game like Darksiders II is making the leap to summer 2012 instead of the holidays, because it’s better to make bank in the heat than get sank in the sleet.

You give us online passes, 3D functionality, motion controls, and a bunch of other crap many of us never asked for, so throw a little more common sense into your feature list please. Release some more good games during the Summer. Because I’ll say it right now, if another Duke-esque title comes out this year and reaches number 2 in NPD sales , you’ve only got yourselves to blame.

I enjoy games and I’m tired of seeing good studios close their doors, not because their work wasn’t up to snuff, but because the extremely saturated release schedule logic in play right now doesn’t give them a fighting chance.

Kmart is Taking Three Gaming Bloggers to E3 2011 – Totally Free

Kmart are hosting a competition to let three gaming bloggers come with them to E3 this year, no strings attached.

The Kmart gaming blog are looking for people who fit the following criteria:

You’re a skilled storyteller that’s both passionate and knowledgable about gaming, or a specific platform or genre. This passion must shine through clearly in your writing, photography, video — everything you do that’s gaming-related. In addition to being a general gamer and gaming enthusiast, you also have a clear passion in a speciality. This could be a platform, or a genre (e.g. sports, FPS).

Our bloggers must be actively involved in gaming forums, sites or other channels (e.g. Twitter) where they talk about gaming. They’re a recognized, trusted name on those channels and have a following. (Meaning they didn’t just sign up for CAG yesterday.)

All of the competition details can be found on this page over at Kmart’s site. Entries have to be in by the end of March.

This is especially great seeing as restrictions have been put on E3 press access this year. So now, even bloggers with a small audience can have at chance at going to the “Big Show.”

Nintendo Sees Their Competition as No One and Everyone

Nintendo tends to carry a rather unique outlook about many things. Just one look at the Wii next to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 these past four years makes that abundantly clear, as does their Nintendo DS platform.

Another area in which they tend to view things in a unique manner is where their competition comes in to play. And yet, at the same time, their words strike a familiar chord…

In the past, Sony Computer Entertainment staff have said that they don’t see the Wii as competition, and we’re pretty sure someone at Microsoft has uttered such a line at least once. In a way, it’s only fitting that Nintendo share that view, as Nintendo Co. Ltd. President Satoru Iwata iterated during his recent investor Q&A:

Talking about rivals in general, we used to be interviewed by the media about the competition with Sony and Microsoft. Recently, media reporters have often interviewed me with their own belief that Apple is Nintendo’s rival and have written articles accordingly. On the contrary, we ourselves, assume that our rival is everything consuming people’s interest, time and energy. If we were to consider one specific thing as our rival, we would do nothing but think of how to beat it. Thinking this way could allow us to fall into the trap of shortsighted business philosophies, saying, “how do we spoil the rival’s strength,” or “how do we do what the rival cannot do.” If Nintendo manufactured commodities of daily necessity and if there were some established methodology to have our products appreciated by the consumers, such approaches could make some sense. However, for Nintendo’s products, it is quite uncertain what is amazing and amusing to people. Even if we ask customers what kind of games they want to play and develop one game as they requested, it may not always greatly excite them. Instead, we should develop what is beyond their imagination and let them say, “This is unexpectedly interesting,” or “This is the very thing I have been wanting.” We can say that our business is very unique.

Therefore, rather than trying to identify a specific rival and to think about how to fight against it, it is more important for our unique business to always ask ourselves, and try to answer, such questions like “What does it mean to make people interested in something?”, “What is worth spending people’s time and energy on?”, or “What do people find amusement in?” We would be glad if you understand that, as the basis, we are not conscious of any certain rivals.

In summation, any sort of entertainment you would be spending your dollars on could be considered their competition. Instead of trying to outdo a specific company or competitor, they are simply doing their own thing and trying to make their product worthy of your time and money.

On a related note, there has been a cloud on the horizon… Cloud Computing, that is, which has emerged in the world of gaming through such services as OnLive, which one would consider a potential “competitor” to Nintendo in the traditional sense. Asked by the investor whether it is viewed as a rival or a possible partner, Iwata stated that there were some aspects of the concept that were “very suitable,” though there were still others which “will never be.”

With Cloud Computing, for example, customers would be irritated even by a slight delay in response after pressing a button. So, for what is suitable for Cloud Computing, we will take advantage of the technology in the future. It is also natural that we will align with a service provider of Cloud Computing, and not going through the trouble to develop our own facilities. Having said that, however, Cloud Computing would not conquer every field of entertainment because present telecommunication technologies inevitably involve a certain delay and limitation of transmission speed. We would employ Cloud Computing as far as it is useful.

One can only wonder what parts of the Cloud Computing concept Iwata and Nintendo are interested in, and how they would like to utilize them in future Nintendo products.

Activision Launches Independent Games Competition With 250k In Prize Money

Indie devs, while incredibly talented, are seldom mentioned alongside gaming industry titans like Activision and EA. They also don’t make much, if anything at all. Building good games from a low budget is a difficult task to accomplish, but Activision would like to help those developers out, and that’s where their new Independent Games Competition comes in.

From June until October, round one of this competition will take place, and devs (as teams or individuals) can submit their games for a chance at $175,000 or $75,000 to help with the game’s development. Activision also says there will be a second round at a later date, but I guess they’re not talking about that part yet.

So if you like money, or game development (and if neither, what do you have against money, hater?) you can check out the IGC for yourself and submit an entry.

PS3 & LittleBigPlanet Serve As Platform For “Game Changers” $2 Million Educational Competition

Sony Computer Entertainment America has partnered with the T.MacArthur Foundation to improve education via digital media with a $2 million open competition seeking out “designers, inventors, entrepreneurs, researchers, and others to build digital media experiences – the learning labs of the 21st Century – that help young people interact, share, build, tinker, and explore in new and innovative ways.”

One component of the competition, called “Game Changers”, offers awards specifically for the creation of new and educational gaming experiences. In a effort to broaden the reach of the Game Changers competition, Sony has donated 1000 PlayStation 3 units paired with copies of the LittleBigPlanet title to libraries and other community-based organizations found in lower income regions — a move acknowledged by President Obama himself in the statement below.

“Lifting American students from the middle to the top of the pack in STEM achievement over the next decade will not be attained by government alone,”

“I applaud the substantial commitments made today by the leaders of companies, universities, foundations, non-profits and organizations representing millions of scientists, engineers, and teachers from across the country.”

Sony President and CEO, Jack Tretton, spoke about the competition, calling it a “challenge [that] truly embodies what’s possible when you place the learning tools and the opportunity into the hands of creative and imaginative minds,” Tretton added the following:

“When leveraging the innovative technology of LittleBigPlanet and the PS3 system, both advanced and novice gamers have access to an open canvas to learn, build, and explore entirely new kinds of gaming experiences. They can also share their creations with millions of gamers around the world to play, rate, and review their levels. There’s no better training ground for anyone interested in digital media.”

Connie Yowell, MacArthur’s Director of Education, commented on Sony’s involvement:

“MacArthur is pleased to team with Sony and National Lab Day to encourage the next generation of innovators … Digital media, including games, are the learning labs of the future and this open competition encourages people to consider creative new ways to use digital media to create learning environments that are engaging, immersive and participatory,”

The intention of the competition is to promote “participatory” learning, which operates under the notion that individuals, specifically young ones, learn best through “sharing and involvement”. Chances are you will learn more when passionate and engaged in the medium you are exploring, making video games a great vehicle for the contest.

Three rounds of submissions will exist, with the public being given the opportunity to comment each round. In addition, the general public will act as judges overlooking the final candidates and ultimately selecting the People’s Choice winner in each category.

The competition officially kicks off on December 7th, and you can get more information about it by visiting dmlcompetition.net. Some may be quick to knock LittleBigPlanet’s role in all of this, but there is no questioning that the game is engaging, immersive, and participatory.

Cliff Bleszinski: Comparing Gears of War 2 to Resistance 2 is “Largely Apples to Oranges”

In a recent interview, Cliff Bleszinski talked a bit about his opinion on Resistance 2, and how it might affect the sales of GoW2. Since the two games will be shipping in the same week there might be a bit of competition in sales, despite the sci-fi shooters being released exclusively on different consoles.

Bleszinski shoots down the speculations that this might be cause for bad blood between himself and the CEO of Insomniac Games, Ted Price, stating:

“Ted (Price) is a wonderful guy and I think they do great work. Everybody loves this dynasty shit where they want to see Ted and I fighting in a fountain pulling each other’s hair or something like that. Sorry, but it’s not going to happen. They’re making their own sci-fi extravaganza, as are we. When you break it down and look at each game, it’s largely apples to oranges.”

Granted, it’s more like comparing sepia apples to glowing oranges (has anyone else noticed that everything in Resistance 2 glows orange?). It’s still interesting to see that while these two games might fall under the same genre, they will probably both offer completely different experiences when it comes to gameplay and story.

Cosplay Like You’ve Never Seen: WCS 2008

The World Cosplay Summit is by no exaggeration the most ridiculously awesome display of dress-up this side of X-rated. The WCS 2008 is currently finishing up the preliminary rounds, where cosplayers from around the world compete for a spot on the world stage. The competitors are not only judged on their outfits, but they actually perform a skit on stage in front of thousands.

Even though most of the voiceover is in a language I don’t understand, the skits performed are absolutely awesome. This video here is from last year’s WCS. If you can watch this and not think it is some extremely cool shit for a hobby that is considered dorky by average folks, then you suck:

Surprisingly, this entry didn’t even place in the top 3. Personally, I think it’s because the WCS is primarily Japanese and these two are Korean, and there’s a lot of bad blood there. Or maybe it’s because the others were more accurate? Better costumes? I saw the winners, but without knowing the anime they are referencing, I can’t really make that call. This one was the best I saw, but what do I know.

The WCS 2008 will be televised in Japan, or so I’ve understood, but there will be streaming coverage at the Aichi Television website. You can also check out the photo galleries from preliminary competitions around the world. Go team USA!

I don’t know who this guy is dressed as, but it appears he’s already a winner.
