You may remember that we ran a contest last week to promote the release of two new (well, old) Majesco titles on GoG.com. Good Old Games, the best place for nostalgia-loving PC gamers, announced the arrival of some brand new old games to their ever-growing catalogue this week; Majesco Entertainment’s Advent Rising and the highly acclaimed Psychonauts. To celebrate, we’re giving 15 Ripten readers the chance to win the game of their choice from GoG.com’s archive of over 160 classic PC games.

I recently got a chance to test out the Volo Pro V Gamer 100 and 200 series HDMI cables, and at first I didn’t know what the difference was. After inquiring, I was told the 200 is a thicker gauge of cable and has a metal housing at the end, therefore offering more protection. To test this, I threw both cables down the stairs and then ran both of them over with my minivan, and they both still worked fine afterwards (though the paint job on the metal housing looked worse than the slightly scratched plastic on the Pro V 100).

I didn’t see much of a difference in picture quality between the two, before or after their “accidents”. They both look better than the generic HDMI cable I had previously, though not significantly, and HDMI cables in general look better than component (and everything else). Overall, I was impressed with the 10-foot-long Volo cables and kept them hooked up to my 360.

Now if you have a PS3 or an Xbox 360 and you aren’t using HDMI cables, you aren’t getting the most out of your gaming system. HDMI is, after all, the cable of choice for Jesus himself. Don’t worry, though — Ripten has got you covered! We’ve teamed up with TRU Company to send out 25 of their Pro V Gamer cables specifically designed for gaming consoles. All you have to do to enter the contest is send me an email (dlandis@ripten.com) with your name and mailing address, subject line “HD Oh My!”. So for the past week & a half, we’ve been holding a contest over on Twitter to give away an Xbox 360 andBut  a copy of Sacred 2. Plenty of you entered, but to my dismay, only one of you guys can win. The console versions of Sacred 2 came out about two months ago, and while it’s recieved pretty decent reviews, a lot of people haven’t played it, or just didn’t have the chance to. Maybe you couldn’t afford the game’s $60 price tag. That’s understandable. Maybe you just don’t have a console to play it on. That’s also understandable, too. But we here at Ripten aim to remedy both of those situations, by giving away an Xbox 360, a copy of Sacred 2, and some swag for it!

The second Call of Duty: World at War (seriously, I refuse to call it Call of Duty 5.) map pack just hit, and while presumably thousands of people are having fun with it right now, you might’ve just hoped it would hit the proverbial online bargain bin soon enough, even though it’s a measly $10. Well, now you don’t have to, because we at Ripten are giving away 5 PS3 codes and 5 Xbox 360 codes for the map pack.

Of course, we can’t just give them to you. That would be crazy! No siree- but you can hit the jump to see what you can do to win a code.

To win one of these codes, all you have to do is make a drawing in MS Paint (or Paintbrush for Mac, Tuxpaint for Linux, or whatever) and leave a link to the picture in the comments below, but don’t forget to tell us which console you want the code for. The drawing can be of anything- as long as it’s gaming related, and the Ripten staff will choose the 5 best PS3 artist drawings and the 5 best Xbox 360 artist drawings. The main point of the contest is that you absolutely cannot use anything other than a rudimentary paint program. You can even use an iPhone paint program if you want to, but if we see any hints of Photoshopping, GIMPing, Paint.NET-ing, or A.viary-ing, your painting will not count.

Keep in mind though- best doesn’t necessarily mean most skillfull. If your drawing is though provoking, or funny, or artsy, or even just totally outrageous enough to make us like it, then you’ll probably win. That’s not to say that skillful artists won’t win- you can make a drawing of anything, as long as the drawing is related to video games. It doesn’t have to look like a Monet, though- Pollacks and Picassos are just as welcome.

Although the average human attention span is less than that of a retarded meerkat, Halo 3 seems to have held its own extremely well in the year and a half that it’s been out. Even now, with a multitude of different FPSes, TPSes, and Halo Wars, Halo 3 is pretty popular amongst Xbox Live members, despite the fact that its maps are pretty limited.

We here at Ripten aim to fix that problem, by holding a contest in which you can win the brand new Halo 3 Mythic Map Pack! The map pack contains three maps- Assembly, Orbital and Sandbox, and a brand new Forge experience (you can start on a blank slate!) for more thrilling multiplayer action.

Valve have announced an official contest today entitled “Dude, Where’s My Thumb?” that challenges budding zombie hunters to take a photo of themselves in front of one of the many advertisements for the game (in London, New York, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle and the San Francisco Bay Area).

The contest encourages you to be “creative” and “crazy”- don’t just take a photo of yourself, do something cool! The photos should be submitted to Valve via this page, where they’ll be judged by none other than Valve president Gabe Newell himself. The Top 25 entries will receive free copies of Left 4 Dead, with the best overall getting a brand new rig from AMD.

With pre-orders of the game almost double that of the Orange Box, Left 4 Dead is looking to be one of this year’s best selling games. You can enter as many times as you like, so head down to one of those areas and take an awesome photo.

If you were anything like me, your favorite movie growing up was (is?) the original Star Wars Trilogy. In fact, even if you aren’t anything like me at all you probably love the original Star Wars movies. As a result, you get a lot of crazy fan art like homemade storm trooper outfits and, you know, Lego Han Solo in carbonite.

One Star Wars fan decided to go green and make his own TIE Fighter out of Starbucks garbage. Using stirrers for the skeleton, ribbed cardboard for the two outside panels and a cut-up coffee lid for the front of the cockpit, Star Wars fan Dan Winters has made a pretty fancy looking replica. “Pew pew!” sound effects not included.

As a result of Dan’s ingeniuty, Wired.com is also starting a contest to see who can make the coolest stuff using only Starbucks materials. Don’t let this dude show you up; save the environment and your money by making your own toys. Grab some cardboard cups and get cracking.

In an effort to get people even more excited (is it even possible at this point?) for the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto IV for Xbox 360, Microsoft is promoting the “Grand Theft Auto IV sweepstakes presented by Xbox Live.”

It’s not uncommon to see a company trying to promote its product by giving away a few goodies, stirring the fan base like a nest of angry hornets, but what makes this one a bit different are the prizes being awarded. It seems someone doesn’t quite understand the idea that 6th place is supposed to be better than 8th place.

Confused? I’m not surprised. Below is a rundown of the 20,000 prizes available.

On or about April 23, lucky winners will be chosen from all entries to receive the following prizes:
• Four Grand Prizes: Four winners will score a four-day/three-night trip for two to New York City.
• One Hundred First Prizes: Custom Xbox 360 Elite console
• Two Thousand Second Prizes: A Rockstar baseball bat

Now, I’m not sure why third place prizes consist of 500 Microsoft points and fourth place gets double that amount, much less why fifth place gets 1600 Microsoft points.

I’m even less sure why a one-year Xbox LIVE Gold subscription is valued lower than a one month subscription, but maybe the people who designed the contests were having too much fun with the Rockstar baseball bats.

Which brings me to my next point: Why baseball bats? I mean, yeah, it’s awesome. I’ll give them that. But they’re just asking for trouble from Jack Thompson when he finds out they’re giving away 2000 Rockstar baseball bats. It’s just poor planning on their part. But at least they’re not giving out Uzis.

Every now and then when you read about someone performing a selfless, heart warming act of kindness, it just sort of makes you feel like a jerk. Such is the case with 11-year-old Tyler Strasser, who’s been helping out those in need since he was a young toddler in diapers. Scratch that; since he was young toddler who walked home naked because he gave his diaper to someone in need.

Tyler recently held a toy drive in Ballantyne Village, North Carolina, to help disadvantaged kids have a happy holiday and he offered up a Nintendo Wii, possibly this holiday season’s hottest item, to bring in more donations. Everyone who donated would get a raffle ticket that got them a spot in a Wii Sports Bowling tournament. The winner of that tournament would then walk away with Nintendo’s coveted gaming system.

Tyler’s been helping people since he was three and he’s now expanded his reach to military families and those serving overseas. Some will inevitably argue that the kid is doing it for attention, fame, yadda yadda, but does it really matter? He’s changing the lives of a lot of people, so whatever he’s getting out of it shouldn’t matter, you Negative Nancies.

Dress up in military gear while holding a sign that reads “Rank Up – Win Big” and send it to us at riptencontest@gmail.com with the subject line “in uniform”. Times Allowed: You may only submit this achievement once. Point Value: 400 points

RIPTEN.COM – RANK UP – WIN BIG CONTEST RULES

EA Sports is asking gamers to get their creative juices flowing by thinking up ideas for a custom jersey design. Winner will have their jersey design featured in NBA LIVE 09. Press release with more information after the jump.

NBA LIVE “Jersey Creator Contest”

Think you’ve got a sense of style? EA SPORTS, in conjunction with adidas and the NBA, have launched an online contest to design a new jersey to be featured in NBA LIVE 09. Users can create their own NBA team jerseys using various assets from all 30 NBA teams as well as shapes, numbers and text with the revolutionary new NBA “Jersey Creator” tool. The stakes? The winning jersey entry will be featured in the NBA LIVE 09.

Winners will be determined based on creativity, talent and originality by EA SPORTS staff and must be submitted by November 16, 2007. Other contest prizes for 2 runners-up include an autographed Gilbert Arenas jersey and EA Sports video game “library” packages.
