Medal of Honor 2 Unveiling this Coming March

In a move that shouldn’t surprise anyone, it looks like EA will be unveiling the sequel to its Medal of Honor reboot this coming March. Yep, a successful FPS that sold more than five million units will get a sequel – a shocker, I know.

This really shouldn’t have come as a surprise; and not just because the first game sold well. If you bought Battlefield 3, the game had an insert for Medal of Honor that showed an image of a shark with the number “1″ in the middle – this, of course, is an image directed at MoH’s now-infamous Tier 1 soldiers and beards. Yep, let’s hope there are beards in the game again.

Not only that, but the first game’s ending heavily hinted at a sequel – though it now presents a few dilemmas as that particular scene referenced an enemy which has been “neutralized” in real life.

The bigger question here is, who will be developing the game’s multiplayer? The first game had single-player duties handled by EA’s Danger Close studios, but the multiplayer was handled by Battlefield developer DICE over in Sweden. Will Medal of Honor 2 entirely be a Danger Close affair or will it be two studios collaborating on one title again?

Truth be told, Medal of Honor 1 was the last FPS campaign I finished and quite enjoyed. It wasn’t your usual action-movie FPS that had set-pieces, one after another. It was more of a subtle affair that showed how soldiers handled adversity on and off the battlefield.

Let’s just hope that MoH2 will have fewer bugs and its multiplayer supported way longer than MoH1‘s was. Are any of you still playing MoH’s multiplayer? What do you want to see in its sequel?

There’s a Giant in My Battlefield 3!

If there’s one thing the Battlefield franchise is known for, it’s authenticity. Note, I didn’t say realism, but authenticity – there is a difference, you know?!

What’s not authentic nor realistic is having a giant soldier walk around the game’s Grand Bazaar map while people are playing Rush. While we don’t see how the giant sniper can interact with enemies and if he can arm/disarm Mcoms, it’s still a sight to behold. There’s also a touch of creepiness when he runs to the player’s direction and we see Muppet eyes coming our way.

So, without further explanation, just watch it for yourself.

What do you think? Awesome, no? Anyone out there who encountered this same glitch and more importantly, can anyone replicate it?

Possible Battlefield 3 DLC Announcement Next Week

We earlier reported that Battlefield 3 has been very successful for EA, and as is the norm these days for successful FPS’, more downloadable content (DLC) is incoming.

During an investors call, EA VP of Investor Relations Peter C. Ausnit said, ”You’re going to hear some announcements from us on Battlefield actually as early as next week in an event we’ve got in New York.”

While Ausnit didn’t offer any other details, it’s been heavily rumored that the new expansion/map is the “All American” DLC; a map pack which consists of all-new fighting places such as: New York, Miami, San Francisco and more. It is titled “All American” for a reason, after all.

If true, hopefully it’s not just a map pack but an expansion – complete with new weapons, vehicles, Achievements/Trophies and more.

The latest DLC for Battlefield 3 has been Back to Karkand, an expansion that was offered free for those who bought the game’s limited edition.

Does the All American DLC sound good to you or would you rather they make an expansion sequel to Battlefield: 2142?

Battlefield 3 ‘Gulf of Oman’ Gameplay Trailer Calls in New Vehicles

Are you ready to head Back to Karkand? I sure as hell am.

In this latest gameplay trailer from EA and DICE, the team shows off the Gulf of Oman map and the new vehicles that are being brought back from Battlefield 2 to help players wreak havoc on the ground and in the air.

Here’s the rundown:

We are bringing back three popular combat vehicles from Battlefield 2 into the Battlefield 3: Back to Karkand expansion pack: The STOVL fighter jet, desert buggy, and one of the APC’s. In this gameplay trailer from the Gulf of Oman map, you can also get a first glimpse of a classified fourth vehicle bound to strike fear into the very hearts of the enemy. Battlefield 3: Back to Karkand is out December 2011 at no extra charge if you own a copy of the Battlefield 3: Limited Edition, or available the same date at $14.99/1200 Microsoft Points.

I swear I just saw a guy driving a Bobcat one minute into that video… what the hell…

Battlefield 1943 Vouchers Coming to PS3 Battlefield 3 Owners

Back at E3, EA promised PS3 purchasers of Battlefield 3 some additional content, but hasn’t been giving us any. After a lawsuit the publisher has decided to give PS3 players Battlefield 1943 for free, since they didn’t get it on the Blu-Ray disc for Battlefield 3. Starting November 26, European PS3 owners can claim a free voucher for the full Battlefield 1943 game. US and Japanese owners can claim their vouchers on December 10 and 17 respectively. But if you think it’s as easy as sounds, you’re gonna be disappointed. Here’s what you need to do.

Activate your Battlefield 3 Online Pass for the PlayStation 3 using the voucher included in the game (see step #5 for additional instructions).
Visit 1943redemption.battlefield.com on, or after the dates outlined above for your region and log in with your Origin ID and password.
Select your territory. (Note: vouchers do not work across regions.)
You will then receive a PlayStation 3 voucher for Battlefield 1943.
Input your voucher into the PlayStation Network store. (Instructions below)
From the XMB (cross media-bar) of the PlayStation 3 connected to a network, choose [account management] under the [PlayStation Network].
From the menu select redeem codes.
Enter voucher and select continue.
Download Battlefield 1943.

It’s a chore, sure, but you get a free game out of it, right? Between the free copy of 1943 and Saints Row 2 that I got for buying Saints Row: The Third, I’m pretty thankful this fall.

Upcoming Battlefield 3 Patch Will Nerf That Damned Tactical Light

DICE’s Senior Gameplay Designer, Alan Kertz has spilled the beans on what the team is thinking of adding (and taking away) in upcoming BF3 patches.

Sure, there’s plenty of balancing to do in regards to weapon recoil, but what interests me the most is that the damned tactical light (sun on a gun) is getting a nerf. It currently blinds you in broad daylight from 20 yards away as you see above… after the patch it will look more like this:

Kertz also mentioned that the team was looking into a way to balance jets, since as of right now they are pretty much the only vehicle that is impossible to repair. (I’ve tried landing one…)

Battlefield 3 Sells 5 Million Copies in First Week, Fastest In EA History

EA today announced that “internal estimates” have revealed that Battlefield 3 has sold through five million copies in it’s first global week of release, making it the fastest-selling game in EA’s history. How in the hell did it get there? Well, it could be because of the metacritic rating averaging 85 on consoles and above 90 on the PC (as of today), it could be because of the 2.5 million “likes” over on Facebook, or it could be because of all of the other great games in this storied franchise. That all might be well and good facts EA, but in my opinion, I think the street magician David Blaine has something to do with it. Didn’t he get locked into an ice cube with a copy of the game and couldn’t play it for a week?

Gamers all over have already logged unprecedented numbers in multiplayer to team up and join the battle online. Server stability was solid in the first weekend (wait, where are they getting these facts), delivering EA’s highest-ever usage rates. Some online players experienced “intermittent disruption” of services with the unknown factor of high volume, but internal estimates show that servers and service uptime stabilized is roughly 98.9% throughout opening weekend, ensuring that players were connected and enjoying the game.

With a pretty nifty little info-graphic spelling out just how far the Battlefield series needs to go to catch-up, there’s no doubt that Battlefield 3 has a long way to go to catch up to Activision’s Call of Duty franchise. Battlefield – 31 million copies sold; Call of Duty – 98 million copies sold, with Modern Warfare 3 just on the horizon to sell ass-tons more.

Battlefield 3: Back to Karkland Screens and Release Date Revealed

Even though Battlefield 3 has just launched worldwide, EA and DICE are wasting no time readying the expansion pack as they just released a new set of screens. The DLC included four remastered maps: Strike at Karkand, Wake Island, Gulf of Oman and Sharqi Peninsula. The expansion also includes five new dog tags, achievements/trophies, three new vehicles, and ten “iconic Battlefield weapons”.

Prepare to go Back to Karkland when it launches in December!

RipTen Review: Battlefield 3 (PC, PS3)

Battlefield 3 is in a tough position. Not only does it have to please veterans of the PC core series, it also has to cater to newer fans familiar with the Bad Company series. EA has also publicly positioned it to rival the Call of Duty series – not an easy feat by any means. Yet, despite all the odds being stacked against DICE’s latest shooter, the game passes every test with flying colors… in most departments.

Perhaps the most notable feature carried over from the Bad Company series is the inclusion of a full single-player campaign – the first for a core Battlefield game (previously, only single-player bot matches were available with little to no narrative.) You’ll spend most of your time playing as Henry Blackburn, a Marine detained and interrogated by members of homeland security. The campaign structure is much like that of Black Ops as you sit down in a chair and play through flashbacks of your previous military campaigns. The ultimate goal here is to find a missing nuclear bomb, which might be used to to level New York City. You’ll traverse some unique and beautiful landscapes while playing singleplayer – from the dusty cities of Iran/Iraq, to million dollar penthouses and Mirrors Edge-like offices in Paris. You won’t also play as Blackburn whilst undergoing missions on the other side of the world though – the game will frequently throw you in the shoes of various pilots and Russian militants all of whom you never get to know very well at all.

Get Back Here Soldier, You're Going Out of Bounds!

The problem here is the campaign is severely limited and also completely boring. It might sound odd to describe “run here and shoot” gameplay as mundane in a first person shooter, but Battlefield 3 does little to nothing in terms of keeping the campaign feeling fresh and exciting. For all the taunting EA have done about the massive maps and free-form nature of the game – none of this is present in the singleplayer. Doing anything other than your strict instructions while playing through SP will result in either your death or a countdown to death for going out of bounds. Seriously. There are few opportunities to flank opponents, or even to think for yourself. It’s also rife with potentially game breaking bugs. AI will occasionally walk through doors (that are required to be opened by them for the game to progress), bump you out of cover, or they’ll look at an enemy face on without firing. These are but a few of the issues I ran into while playing the single player campaign, but the list could go on for centuries.

However, I also have to mention that for a game that taunts vehicular combat as one of it’s strengths, it’s not at all a plus in the campaign. Can I fly the Jet? No, sit in the back and play a on-rails bombing section. Can I drive the Humvee? No, get on the 50.cal for a “brilliant” on-rails turret shooter sequence. Can I drive the Jeep we’re in? No, sit in the back and listen to a conversation. You’ll eventually be able to drive a tank in a straight line, so that should alleviate these issues… right? The story mode is a disappointing trudge through various plot-points that try too hard to be dramatic, ultimately wrapping up with an even weaker ending than expected. However, if the single player does succeed at one thing, it’s teaching you the controls for Battlefield 3′s incredible multiplayer experience.

I Bet You Thought You Could Fly This Jet In Single Player? NOPE.

The Multiplayer in Battlefield 3 is an immense beast – you have the rush mode for Bad Company vets and the Conquest mode for those who prefer the original game’s open playstyle. That’s not to say you should stick to either one though, as the game does a wonderful job of merging the two modes into something truly epic. On the PC, conquest battlefields will be gargantuan in scale, with 64 players fighting it out in Jets, Tanks, Helicopters, Light armoured vehicles and on foot. The console versions may be stuck to a 24 player count, but the maps are designed in such a way that frequent battles are never hard to find. I can assure you that your experience won’t be gimped on the PS3 at all. Quote me on that. The variety of maps are definitely all pleasing to the eye, and work well from a gameplay aspect as well. From the well known tight corridors of Operation Metro, to the sprawling deserts of Operation Firestorm, there’s sure to be a map that entertains you and your playstyle to the fullest.

There’s a large amount of unlockables and incentives to keep playing as well. Each gun can unlock a near armory of attachements, and the various classes will earn new gear that further enhance their capabilities. Vehicles can also unlock new pieces of equipment such as heat seeking missiles, smokescreens and flares. Support players will eventually gain the Mortar to reign death from afar, Engineers will be able to control EOD bots, while Recon’s can drop sensors for vital intel and Assaults will keep soldiers on their feet with defibrilators. Battlefield 3 definitely does a great job of catering to everyone’s playstyle, and the core mechanics are extremely solid and fun to take advantage of. The shooting itself just feels right – each gun has a distinct weight, and most really pack a punch. The vehicles are fun to control, and once you’ve mastered one, you’ll really dominate the battlefield and turn the tide of war.

Conquer This... If You Can.

Buy Battlefield 3, Play the Mass Effect 3 Co-op Beta

Using one game to promote an upcoming one is all the rage these days. We saw it weeks before the PSN crisis with SOCOM 4 containing the Resistance 3 beta, and back in June with Infamous 2 and Uncharted 3′s beta. With the recent news that Mass Effect 3 is getting co-op, it stands to reason that a demo would come. After all, Reapers+lag=not so much fun.

If you buy Battlefield 3 new, you’ll be able to redeem an online pass that’ll give you access to Mass Effect 3′s co-op. The demo is slated for January 2012. There are other ways to get in, but Bioware’s keeping mum on them for now.

Battlefield 3 Leaflet Hints at New Medal of Honor Sequel

For years the Call of Duty seies has ruled the throne Medal of Honor originally held with an iron fist. That all changed last year when EA decided to step their game up with a double assault of a Medal of Honor reboot and the release of Battlefield: Bad Company 2. In the case of the former, it’s considered by many to not be the reboot they were all hoping for, but developer Danger Close isn’t giving up on helping retake the throne.

If you’ve been playing Battlefield 3 for the past few hours, you lucky bastards, you’ve probably seen a leaflet in box that looks like the picture below. Given how Battlefield dev DICE contributed to the multiplayer in that game, it seems logical for their game to hint at a new Medal of Honor. Or maybe they’re just doing some cross-dev support.

While the PC version of Battelfield 3 already looks astounding, the console versions of the game have an HD Texture Pack that can be installed. On PS3 it is mandatory, but on the 360, it’s completely optional. So just how much of a difference does this texture pack make? Well honestly, it makes a pretty significant difference. Most Xbox 360 users won’t have an issue as the texture pack only weighs in at 1.5GB, but if you’re one of those people who never bought a HDD for your console, you’re in trouble.
