C.O.R.E Preview
by John Kershaw on October 6, 2008

Good first person shooters are a rare find on the DS. C.O.R.E promises “old school” action tied to a “Gripping sci-fi storyline, with a fully interactive world”. I got my hands on an early build of the game last week, so hit the jump to get my impressions. Read more…
DS Preview: Moon
by Andrew Podolsky on August 21, 2008

My DS has been a lot of places, but this time I took it to the Moon. No, not that lifeless gray hunk of rock in the night sky— this is Renegade Kid’s Moon, a first person shooter using the same engine from last year’s spooky FPS Dementium.
One concern I had when I saw Moon’s trailer recently was that the same bland color palette would be used throughout. Dementium had this problem—everything was muddied with black fog and similar looking environments, but at least Moon offers some variety when it comes to the color scheme. Read more…

Moon Trailer: Like Dementium, But In Space
by Andrew Podolsky on August 17, 2008

A year ago we previewed and reviewed Dementium: The Ward, a dark and spooky FPS for the DS that ended up being, well, not so great.
Developer Renegade Kid is giving it another shot this year with The Moon, which looks like it not only grafts a sci-fi raygun onto the action, but also lets you get behind the wheel of a Moon Buggy. Sweet!
Let’s just hope they expand the color scheme– Dementium relied a bit too much on black fog, and from the trailer we expect there to be lots of shades of gray. Check out that trailer, right after you click on “read more”. Read more…

DS Review: Final Fantasy IV
by Roly Reyes on August 7, 2008

It’s been a long time since Square Enix started milking their audience for everything they’re worth. Since Final Fantasy IV’s original release and prior to its appearance on the Nintendo DS, it had already been ported three times over. With its arrival on the DS marking its fourth port, it also marks its first real remake that would recapture the magic of the original, as opposed to just regurgitating it. Read more…
SquareEnix’s DKS3713 Event Summary
by Roly Reyes on August 2, 2008

Perhaps the most oddly named gaming event of all time, SquareEnix’s DKS3713 is also the same event that’s ringing with a ton of news. Day 1 is over and with it came the expected and not so expected. Read more…
Demo the DS’s Upcoming Breakdancing Game
by Andrew Podolsky on July 30, 2008

Nothing says hardcore hip-hop like the Nintendo DS (snicker!) but Ignition Entertainment is now serving up a web demo of their upcoming Breakdancing game for the DS, Red Bull BC One. It plays like Elite Beat Agents, only instead of tapping in time to the music, you’re playing connect-the-dots against the clock.
From this demo, it seems like the music is the best part of the game– the dots on the bottom screen aren’t terribly exciting, and it’s impossible to focus on the dancing on the top screen while you’re playing.
Before you go running back to your “conventional” Nintendo games, why not give this oddball a quick try? Just be sure to use Internet Explorer and download the 3d plugin. If you’re into the hippity-hop or whatever the damn kids are doing these days, you might actually enjoy it.

Review: FF Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift
by Joshua Pollak on July 23, 2008

From Emily: After acquiring the games journalism bug when I coerced him into live-blogging the Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix beta with me, Josh has written his first review. I had been planning on covering this myself, but it got to the point where he had put 20 hours in (then 30, 40, etc) so I knew I would never catch up. This works out because he is actually sort of an expert on Final Fantasy Tactics in general, and I am not really that great at turn-based strategy anyhow. Feel free to heckle us both from the comments section.
The original Final Fantasy Tactics is one of my favorite games of all time, and despite being a twice-removed cousin of that original gem, Final Fantasy Tactics A2 is a remorselessly cute and surprisingly deep turn-based strategy game. FFTA2 is solidly in the camp of its GBA predecessor (thus the “A2″ part of the name). It has the same judge system and simplified combat while adding two more races and even more jobs (bringing the total up to something like 44). Read more…

Guitar Hero: On Tour Launch Trailer Gives High School Musical A Run For Its Money
by Chad Lakkis on June 20, 2008
Romancing the teenage girl in your life is as easy as strumming your DS screen while a bunch of your friends dance around you at your local neighborhood park. Man I wish they had this amazing invention for my Gameboy when I was a teenager.
Enjoy the new Guitar Hero: On Tour trailer, and remember that everything in life is “more funner” when you are an imaginary DS rock star!
Nintendo DS Review: Crosswords DS
by Beau Rosser on May 21, 2008

Before playing Crosswords DS, I asked myself, “How am I going to review a game with a foundation built around a collection of crosswords?” However, after obsessively playing the game to the point of crossword-induced dreams, Crosswords DS had me in a headlock that would not let go. Read more…

DS Review: The World Ends With You
by Kat Bailey on April 24, 2008

Westerners should count themselves lucky that the World Ends With You managed to make it out of Japan. As recently as five years ago, Square-Enix’s quirky RPG starring a typically angst-y teenage protagonist playing a bizarre game in the middle of Shibuya might have been deemed too bizarre for western audiences. And who knows, they might have been right. But times change, and it looks like we’re the better for it. Read more…
DS Review: Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword
by Kat Bailey on March 27, 2008

Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword is the kind of game that can only come out well into in a system’s life cycle. Like many launch titles, early Nintendo DS games were generally ugly, clunky games that featured tacked on stylus support. But, as Dragon Sword demonstrates, the difference between games like the hand-cramping Super Mario 64 DS and latter day titles can be startling. Read more…
Hands-On: Spore DS Character Creation
by Emily Balistrieri on February 21, 2008

I tap ‘n dragged some long skinny arms onto my oblong-bodied creature and watched on the top screen as his animations automatically changed to accommodate them.
The creature editor for Spore DS made an appearance on the expo floor at GDC today and the demonstrator gave us some exclusive information as we chose more goofy body parts to mix ‘n match on our model. Read more…
