Are These The First Screenshots of GTA V? No, They’re Not.

Yesterday, you may have seen some apparently, “leaked” images of Grand Theft Auto V.

Well, upon closer inspection, many people noticed these were obviously faked and could be easily made with a mod.

Despite the fact that the heavily edited map images were ripped right from San Andreas and that they put the dollar sign after the 235$ and that the guy in the picture is clearing standing RIGHT HERE and has just been reskinned… yeah. They’re fake.

Just to be sure I emailed my buddy at Rockstar and he was all like “lolwut?”

Oh internet…

Bioware Employee Caught In a Review Scandal Over Dragon Age II

As if it wasn’t hard enough trying to be a decent game writer and trying to give people honest opinions about what games they should and should not play, some fool over at Bioware has to go and give gamers one more reason to distrust reviews and scores.

A Bioware employee, who goes by the name of Avanost on Metacritic, was caught reviewing Dragon Age II on metacritic and whaddya know, he had a glowing review of the title, which many reviewers and even the game’s musical composer have criticized for feeling rushed. Here’s what he had to say about the game.

“The immersion and combat of this game are unmatched! A truly moving and fun epic. Anything negative you’ll see about this game is an overreaction of personal preference. For what it is, it is flawlessly executed and endlessly entertaining”

Already this is looking a little sketchy, because anyone who actually plays games and reviews them honestly would never say things like “overreaction of personal preference” because that is just plain stupid. That’s like saying that anyone who doesn’t like Halo just must not like space marines. Did you ever think, Avanost, that some people might not like it because there are things that are bad about it? Redundant combat, unattached characters and a lacking plot are just a few complaints that I’ve heard from players. Regardless, there is no excuse for tarnishing a whole community just to get a few more sales of your game. Shame on you.

Now, the review has been taken down (as is only fair), but it just goes to show that you have to be careful about integrity in this industry. Really it’s a shame.

Fan Made Batman: Arkham City Trailer Shows Off Batman/Joker Co-Op

Many have speculated that Batman: Arkham City will feature co-op. Current rumors even state that Robin will be a playable character and will fight along side the Dark Knight.

Today a Youtube video has been posted claiming to be a “leaked” trailer for said co-op. The video shows Batman and his arch-nemesis, the Joker, fighting a ton of thugs in a downtown environment.

While the idea is cool, we are deeming this trailer to be fake. The video features reused voice overs/dialogue, old character models and doesn’t fit the style of previously released Batman: Arkham City trailers.

The video is worth watching for the fan fiction and has a nice lulz at the end.

Is Treyarch Selling Cancelled Maps? (‘First Strike’ Black Ops DLC)

Sony Declares PlayStation Phone Pictures, “Definitely Fake” ?

Images of the alleged Sony PlayStation phone spread like wildfire over the Internet last night. Many websites reported these prototype images were a sure thing. Engadget went as far to say: “…we assure you, the picture above is in fact the PlayStation Phone you’ve long been waiting for.”

This morning, NowGamer spoke with Sony on their official line and was told the photos were “definitely fake.” As soon as the exact quote from the conversation was posted, NowGamer was asked to take it down. Currently, Sony’s official statement stays at:

“We do not comment on rumour and speculation.”

Large communities are digging deep into these photos, to figure the mystery out themselves.

NowGamer says:

“A closer look at the top screen in particular reveals a number of telltale signs, such as a large amount of dirt collecting around the screen, as well as mention of ‘A’ and ‘B’ buttons on the interface.”

The images have everything a PSP based phone would have — PlayStation style buttons, shoulder buttons for gaming, and an onboard camera.

Sony Ericsson was also contacted for a comment. A spokesperson also responded in typical PR speak:

“Sony Ericsson does not comment on rumour or speculation”.

Amazon France Lists ‘Uncharted 3: World of Deceit’ – A Fake? (Update)

The gaming world has been buzzing with Uncharted 3 rumors the past couple months: first Emily Rose mentioned voice work in passing and then there’s been the case of loose lips at the UAE media firm. Well, now Amazon France lists Uncharted 3: World of Deceit. Unfortunately the listing is a bit of deceit and does not seem to be connected to the popular series. Rather, it seems to be the designs of a concept artist and if he was seeking publicity, it seems he has succeeded

Although, I would like to say ‘World of Deceit’ makes for a nice title. It sounds as if Nathan Drake is on another adventure with many enemies and few he can trust (yeah, like in the first 2 Uncharted games). It’s quite unlikely to be the title of the game.

Excitement for any news on Uncharted 3 is beginning to hit fever pitch. Hopefully the developers from Naughty Dog will throw us a bone soon.

UPDATE:

Arne Meyer posted on the NeoGAF forums:

“The guy used the Uncharted universe as the basis for mock work for one of his classes and even listed it as such where the pieces were posted: Uncharted 3 pieces I did for architecture class.”

So there you have it. Uncharted 3: World of Deceit has been definitively declared a fake.

Girlfriend Deletes Boyfriend’s Level 80 WoW Characters Before Raid (Video)

It’s been a while since I’ve seen a steaming pile of poop trying to pass itself off as an “authentic look at uncensored anger,” but thanks to this lovely (and obviously staged) video clip, we can all laugh at the idiot smashing his computer in a rehearsed fit of rage after his girlfriend supposedly foiled his cigarette-smoking late night World of Warcraft raiding session.

Our resident audio expert jacked up the sound right before rage boy took a swipe at his computer, and this is what we heard his inner voice saying:

“NO!! MY GUILD LEADER WILL HAVE MY HEAD IF I MISS THIS RAID!!! BLIZZARD WILL RESTORE MY ACCOUNT COMPLETELY IN A DAY OR SO, BUT I MUST SMASH MY FLAT SCREEN IMMEDIATELY!!! ARRGHH!!!!”

A note to all those in a relationship with a World of Warcraft player — simply deleting their account will do you no good. If you truly want to get them to stop playing WoW, you’ll need to hook an authenticator up to it, blow the authenticator up with some C4, delete the characters, burn the physical install disks, and take some comprising photos of your loved one that you can use as blackmail if they even think about calling Blizzard to restore their account.

PS4 Viral Videos “Not From Sony”

There’s a saying that good things come in threes, and as we approach E3, it’s pretty safe to assume that fake things will come in groupings much larger than that.

Sony PR Representative, Al de Leon told Game Informer earlier today that the supposed “leaked PS4 virals” making their way around the internet do not belong to them.

“I can confirm that this video is not from SCE [Sony Computer Entertainment]“, said de Leon.

At best, these “SCElabs” videos might be left overs from a failed agency pitch, as they don’t seem polished enough to be a final product. And in the extreme case an external agency was hired to produce this as a pre-E3 buzz starter, there is no way in hell anyone at Sony would ever come clean about it.

You can check out the two viral videos in discussion below. The first is a traditional example that appears to tease a 3D Modern Warfare 2 game, while the second is more of a Blair Witch approach that I’m pretty sure we all tired of seeing years ago.

EA Denies Respawn E3 Announcement, Calls Jason & Vince Facebook Page Fake

Well, in a week that has already featured one “it’s a fake” response from Valve’s Gabe Newell, it’s only fitting that we add another to the mix.

The supposed Facebook page created by former Infinity Ward leads, Jason West and Vince Zampella, promising a “big surprise” at E3, is a flat out fake. An EA representative told IGN today that there will be no Respawn Entertainment announcement at the upcoming E3 event.

As it stands, the best that we could have hoped for, had this been true, would be something along the lines of a “hey guys here is a giant sketch we did back stage” considering the ink on their E3 partnership has barely had enough time to dry. Oh well, maybe next year.

Proclaimed Fake: PS3 Screenshot Depicting PS2 Download Capability Gets Examined

Hi, I’m Snake from the PS2. Want to play with me on your PS3? Well too bad.

First off, lets recap the situation for those that are just joining us. Yesterday we (along with many sites) reported that a user (NiTiz) of the popular N4G gaming site posted an image on their forum. The image was supposedly a snapshot of a PS3 interface screen highlighting PS2 download capability.

The user on the N4G forum went on to say that the image was sent to him from an unnamed source within Sony and that his source told him the PS2 download feature would be announced for the PS3 at this years E3. Sony then came out and denied it stating that the screen was fake and that they had no plans for such a service.

Many sites (including ours) reported the Sony was denying the PS2 download rumor, but were also quick to add that this may be another case of corporate double talk on the part of Sony. The company did this a few months ago when rumors circulated regarding a price cut. They claimed to have no plans for it only to have the price cut take effect a few days later.

So we have one side screaming fake and the other side claiming to have an inside source within company. Who is telling the truth? I could have just waited for E3 to find out, but unfortunately I am not that patient.

I have been using Photoshop for over ten years as a web designer, so when I saw the screenshot in discussion I decided to take a closer look to see if I could sort through all the talk on both sides and find something tangible that we could all use as proof to end the speculation once and for all.

At first glance, the image looks pretty good and being that an image like this (if fake) would be created in an application such as Photoshop and then displayed onto a television, it would be nearly impossible to find evidence of tampering unless the individual made a glaring mistake. So with that in mind, any Photoshop detective work is pretty much thrown out the window.

At this point, it’s easy to see how many sites could be fooled by it, but as I was about to give up on the image I noticed something I thought was suspicious and decided to run a Google search against it. Once I found what I was looking for, it was obvious to me that this image was a fake.

Below is a magnified portion of the description text below Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, the game that has been cued up for download in the screenshot. It clearly reads “radical new take on Hideo Kojima’s best-selling tale of stealth, heroism and double-crossing.”

This seemed odd to me, so I ran a search on Google for the words “Metal Gear Solid 2 is a radical new take” and clicked into the first result that popped up. Oddly enough, it was a link that pointed to Konami’s Official European website. I say “oddly” because N4G has a very large European following. The description, as you can see below, is nothing more than a modified version of the listed summary for Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance.

Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance is a radical new take on Hideo Kojima’s best-selling tale of stealth, heroism and double-crossing. Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance retains the ground breaking stealth-based action of its predecessor, with players guiding a series of characters through key terrorist situations.

Top-secret weapons technology is being mysteriously transported under cover of an oil tanker to an unknown destination. It’s up to Snake to infiltrate the transport and keep this deadly weapon of mass destruction from falling into the wrong hands! Snake is back – are you ready?

So why would the person take all this time to fake this screen and then use the wrong description? Well, probably because it is not that easy to find the original description of MGS2 floating around on the web since most Google searches bring up the Substance version. The game description for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, according to Konami’s Official US site, reads:

Snake returns in the highly anticipated action title, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty for the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system. Players take on the role of a one-man army determined to stop a deadly high-tech weapon from falling into the hands of a highly elite resistance group called Dead Cell. Players must utilize their skills in stealth, weaponry and counter-terrorism to fight off the competing powers and destroy the gigantic war machine, Metal Gear Ray.

Hope this helps to put the rumor to bed for good — although I doubt it will, and by pointing this out I have the sneaky suspicion I have just motivated attention hungry Photoshop fakers to up their game. Skeptics will argue that there is still a chance the screen is some early concept on the part of Sony, but frankly I doubt that is the case.

Update: I decided to change the headline of this story based on feedback recieved from readers. I also want to be clear that I am not claiming the PS3 console will never get the ability to download PS2 titles — I am however questioning the validity of the image.
