PAX East Mortal Kombat Session Brings Back Memories, Provokes Deep Thought

As the first day of the Penny Arcade Expo East kicked off, Dave Oshry and I began to scour the floors in search for some hands on gaming fuel.

One of our first appointments was with Warner Bros. Interactive, and having grown up playing Mortal Kombat in the arcades, it was nice to get some joystick action via the arcade fitted units made available on the show floor.

We hunkered in for some 1v1 action, and while I had narrowed my character selection process down to either Sub Zero or Scorpion, I quickly learned of Dave’s affectionate bond with Johnny Cage. “I always play as Johnny Cage” he said. Well, alright then. I can’t stand Johnny Cage so the idea of freezing him over and over again was appealing, and with that I selected Sub Zero.

The first match ended with a Johnny Cage victory – courtesy of some low blow button mashing, but after getting my kombat wits in order I made quick work of him in the rematch. Neither of us were able to pull off a finishing move, though we both tried desperately only to throw a half-assed barely landing jab.

Disappointed with our Fatality wiffs, the two of us began to toss around a few “what ifs,” with the biggest one being “what if the game had Fatality Failure animations.” The idea would be that as you failed the fatality you would maybe freeze half your own leg instead and hobble around like an idiot or drop down for a split to punch your opponent in the groin only to pull a hamstring. Of course you would only see these if you messed up (like us).

In closing, Mortal Kombat brought back lots of good arcade memories and I am really looking forward to the full release of the game this April. The End.

Mortal Kombat 9 looks like it’s set to reinvigorate the violent fighting franchise, something it’s needed for a long time. The brutal gameplay footage that’s been shown around the internet only increases my excitement for the game, and today we learn when the game will finally grace your console, assuming you’re from the US.

The official release date for Mortal Kombat in the US is April 19th, 2011. Check out the box art for each platform below:

PlayStation 3:

If you have the choice, the PlayStation 3 version looks to be superior with the inclusion of Kratos and 3D compatibility (provided you have a 3D display).

Who From Gears of War Should Represent Xbox in Mortal Kombat?

"Seriously...Zumba?"

With the recent announcement of God of War’s protagonist Kratos’ entry into Mortal Kombat, the question on everyone’s mind has become, “Who should represent Xbox in Mortal Kombat?” While clearly Master Chief exists as the poster boy for all things Xbox, he clearly lacks the killer instinct, personality and character presence possessed by Kratos.

Luckily, Cliff Bleszinski of Epic and Gears of War fame, had a recent conversation over twitter with fans where he expressed interest in adding a Gears character:

“Yeah. Must figure out a Gears char in MK!”

Very eloquent I might add and he’s right. What other Xbox exclusive game has characters as well-known and tough enough (Chainsaw bayonettes…hello!?) to share the arena of the Outworld tournament? With the Gears now in motion, the question now becomes – Who from Gears of War should fight in Mortal Kombat?

Well, obviously the character would have to be well-known and developed – they’re competing against Kratos here. So that eliminates any of the bosses, deceased characters and logically leaves Delta Squad. So let’s discuss the candidates.

Clayton Carmine

Big, Bad, but voted most likely not to survive Gears 3.

He certainly looks the part. The first Carmine brother to successfully get on the Delta Squad HGH work out program is probably consumed with avenging the deaths of his fallen brothers. But is he well known enough? Will he have the Chrisma? Survey Says – X

Let’s see: He’s big enough, strong enough, and gosh darn it, people like him! But he’s a sidekick…Player #2. You can’t send a sidekick to a man’s job. Did you see Robin featured in Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe…hell no! And you won’t see Dom enter the tournament either.

Baird

AAARGH!! Not the threads!

Baird is what passes for a nerd on planet Serra, albeit a nerd with a 20″ neck. He’s funny too, always quick with a quip, but the type of character that something gross always happens too. During the tournament he’d be the one most likely to step on one of Montaro’s turds or make out with Mileena. Sorry, Mortal Kombat already has it’s nerds – Baraka and Johnny (not in the face) Cage.

Marcus “The Man” Fenix

"Seriously...Zumba?"

Marcus is about as manly as you can get and one of the few characters who can stack up well against Kratos (and possibly Duke Nukem). He’s got scars, bulging biceps, a gravelly voice (lung cancer?) and legs the size of refrigerators. His last name is spelled “Fenix” because no one wants to correct him. Finally, we have a contender!

Augustus “Daaaaammn! That’s a lot of juice!” Cole

"Man, you ugly...and the Coletrain Don't like ugly!"

Through the course of the first two games it’s apparent in Coles own words, “Nobody plays this game like me! Nobody!” He’s a trash talking mountain of muscle who can survive anything. Hell, even if he were to die, he ain’t going anywhere. Pretty sure the Grim Reaper knows better then to get in the way of the Train. So let’s see: Recognizable – Check. Charismatic – Check. And Jax would be happy no longer being the only brother.

The only man Xbox has that could have Kratos shaking in his boots. And Everybody knows Kratos can’t rap!

E310: Mortal Kombat Fatality Video Wets Your Lips – With Blood

To say that the new Mortal Kombat is a return to form for the series would be an understatement. The fatalities are more gruesome than ever and the new “X-Ray mode” ensures that even the most sadistic gorehounds will be satisfied. I think it looks great, so what does that say about me?

The video quality is far from great, as it’s footage filmed with a handheld camera. Fatality highlights include Kung Lao’s hat/tablesaw move (pictured above), Sektor’s dismember followed by lock-on missiles, and since I’m such a fan of the classics, I squealed at Johnny Cage’s good ol’ decapitating uppercut.

Joker’s T-Rated Gag Gun Fatality All Gag No Gore

In the midst of all the Metacrtic user score bashing, you may have missed out on some fairly important Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe news. The Joker’s Gag Gun fatality that took the internet by storm has been reworked due to ESRB Teen rating scrutiny.

If you have been following our coverage of the game here at Ripten, you already know that we had a chance to sit down with Hector Sanchez (the game’s producer) at E3. He walked us through the latest MK installment, and we spent some hands-on time with it as well.

Overall, my impression was positive, and I was looking forward to the game’s release. That excitement escalated further when I saw Hector unveil the Joker’s Gag Gun fatality in late August on GameTrailers TV. He wrapped up the segment by addressing skeptics.

“So for all the people that thought that this was going to be Mortal Kombat light, you’ve seen it here first on GameTrailers TV, the Joker actually blows Katana’s head off.”

The concept was vicious and yet the blood wasn’t persistent — something Hector explained to be a key requirement in order to achieve a Teen rating. Unfortunately, it didn’t seem to be enough to convince the ESRB powers at be.

The Joker’s Gag Gun fatality that I fell in love with just two short months ago has been further “teen-a-fied”. Kotaku describes the new version after experiencing it first hand:

Joker still whips out his prank gun, a “BANG!” flag unfurling. Unfortunately, you won’t see the follow up of Joker shooting someone in the face; that actually happens off screen now, the headshot safely out of sight.

Meh. I’m disappointed. Personally, I find those damn Highschool Musical films more disturbing than a little non-persistent blood. It’s too bad. I’m holding out hope for Hector and the crew at Midway, but it appears that the ESRB has them right where they want them — drained, dazed, and ready for a finishing move of their own.

Joker’s Card Deck Fatality Deals a Killer Hand

We recently stumbled on a video highlighting the “kombat modes” of Mortal Kombat versus DC Universe, and the end of the clip reveals yet another Joker fatality.

The first MK vs DC Joker fatality, which we reported two months ago, utilized a gag gun double take to brutally finish off the opponent, while the second installment gives new meaning to the saying “Jokers Wild.”

Some of the dudes working on the upcoming Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, namely Senior Producer Hans Lo and Associate Producer Hector Sanchez, put together a little video to help us all understand this crazy new fighting game. Arguably, the most important factor in what makes a good fighting game is good fighting (no shit), and these producer fellas give us the rundown on how exactly we can beat each other’s asses. Joker’s Gag Gun Fatality Ends with a BANG!

I got some hands-on time with Hector and the MK vs DC game at E3 this year, and while I was impressed with the amount of blood they worked into the game, the Fatalities and Brutalities demonstrated at that point were a little on the lighter side.

So when I saw the Joker’s Fatality (and yes, it appears that DC Villains will be able to perform Fatalities) I almost shit my pants. If you are one of the many gamers out there who vowed they would never buy a Teen Rated Mortal Kombat game, you may want to check this clip out before you utter another word.

The clip above was zoomed in and cut out from a GameTrailers video interview (shown in full below). I opted to feature the animated gif because it highlights the Fatality, but if you want to see the full video, and check out the rest of the Joker’s moves, have at it.

Afterthought: What say you? Are you impressed by the creativity and graphic nature of the Joker’s Fatality, or is this type of thing still not good enough?
