Warning: The Watercooler is the best thing you will see on the Internet today, mainly because it is the best thing I saw on the Internet yesterday. This one’s for the film fans out there. This might be only a teaser but it tells you absolutely everything you need to know about something that will likely be pretty big news.

There’s going to be more info about this during the Superbowl. The only American sports event that people in the UK actually might watch- but we don’t have any adverts. You’ll have to see what the trailer is like for yourselves, then.

MK Legacy Director Gets Green Light On Full Blown Mortal Kombat Film

It was only a matter of time.

First the viral success of his Mortal Kombat movie trailer.

Then the success of his Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series.

Now, Kevin Tancharoen has finally been given a green light by New Line Cinema to bring his gritty interpretation of the Mortal Kombat universe to the big screen.

“It’s really important that we show we can bring our game properties to movies instead of just the other way around,” said Warner home entertainment President Kevin Tsujihara.

New Line president Toby Emmerich said the idea to do the movie came entirely from the work Tancharoen has done:

“The new game and the online shorts prompted us to consider a reboot of a brand we hadn’t been actively thinking about”

The movie will mirror MK Legacy and will offer a more gritty and realistic take on the Mortal Kombat characters which Tancharoen has become known for. (White Raiden?)

Walberg Claims He is Nathan Drake, also Confirms Pesci, De Niro

Drake’s Deception? Walberg claims he is Nathan Drake and confirms Joe Pesci and Robert Deniro.

In an interview with Moviehole, Mark Walhberg answered questions about the Uncharted Movie:

“David O. Russell is writing right now and hopes to direct,” said Wahlberg. “It’s myself, Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro.”

Recent deceptive reports claimed Wahlberg might not be the only option for Drake’s role and the Pesci and Deniro’s involvement in the project was speculation.

Sorry Nathan Fillion fans, It seems Marky Mark is likely Nathan Drake.

Fan-Made Half-Life Movie Teaser

Could this be what we might see in a Half-Life movie? One Valve fan has put together a teaser for a Half-Life based movie, and by golly it’s a hum-dinger.

The trailer is simply a teaser for a longer trailer, not an actual film that is going to be released, so don’t get your hopes up too much. The creator notes that this longer trailer “will be a lot longer, packed with more contents and telling a little bit about the story.”

Oblivion Movie Trademark Filed

Looks like an Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion motion picture could be in the works. ZeniMax has filed a trademark to create a movie based on Bethesda Softwork’s highly popular role-playing video game.

This trademark is for “motion picture film production and entertainment services”. All indications are that any work on creating an Oblivion Film is in the early development stages and it could take time.

This could be exciting news as the medeval fantasy world created in Oblivion is quite vivid and could make for an interesting setting.

No word on whether Uwe Boll has been contacted.

Tron: Evolution – Behind the Scenes Look with Olivia Wilde

Tron is set to make a huge comeback with feature film Tron Legacy and action-adventure tie-in video game Tron: Evolution. Courtesy of Disney Games UK, check out the following video to see new footage of the game as well as interviews with the creative team and ravishing starlet Olivia Wilde.

Tron: Evoultion is currently in development Propaganda Games and will be released for the PC, PS3, PSP, Xbox 360, Wii and Nintendo DS platforms on December 7th.

No Half-Life Movie … Unless Valve Makes It

It’s been twelve years since the first Half-Life game hit the PC and, despite its popularity, we still haven’t seen a film adaptation. There’s a very specific reason: Valve doesn’t trust anybody to do it – except themselves.

According to Valve CEO Gabe Newell, they’ve recieved plenty of studio offers in the past, they’ve just turned them all down.

“Directors down there (Hollywood) wanted to make a Half-Life movie and stuff, so they’d bring in a writer or some talent agency would bring in writers, and they would pitch us on their story. And their stories were just so bad. I mean, brutally, the worst. Not understanding what made the game a good game, or what made the property an interesting thing for people to be a fan of.”

The abundant amount of inferior pitches made the folks at Valve realize that if a Half-Life movie were to me made, it would have to be them at the helm.

“That’s when we started saying: ‘Wow, the best thing we could ever do is to just not do this as a movie, or we’d have to make it ourselves. And I was like, ‘Make it ourselves? Well that’s impossible.’ But the Team Fortress 2 thing, the Meet the Team shorts, is us trying to explore that.”

Do you require any more proof that Valve is the greatest developer in the history of entertainment? Hyperbole be damned, Valve is great and their love for what they’re doing and who they’re doing it for is unrivaled.

Thor: The Video Game Is A Thing That Exists

In a move that surprises absolutely nobody, Marvel and Sega are planning to release a Thor video game to coincide with the release of the film in Summer of 2011. While I have no information on the game besides the trailer to go on, if Iron Man & other comic-to-movie video games are any indication, this game won’t be so great.

The above trailer, released to Marvel’s YouTube account, doesn’t show off anything from the game itself, aside from a shot of Thor standing above a cliff. We also get to see Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, with some lighting flashes in the background. Game of the Year 2011, I’m sure. Kenneth Branagh’s Thor is coming to theatres next year, on May 6th, 2011, and the game should release around the same time. Hulu Plus Officially Coming to the PS3 and Xbox 360

Look, there have been rumors of Hulu officially coming to consoles since Hulu became popular, and until today, we’ve had no confirmation that the rumors were either false or true. As suspected by everyone, however, all of the rumors were totally true. Today, Hulu announced a limited launch of Hulu Plus, a $9.99-per-month subscription-based service that would allow you to watch full seasons of shows from over 100 content providers, including Fox, NBC, and ABC, in 720p HD. The service will work on your PS3 and Xbox 360, as well as your PC, Mac iPad, iPhone, and even some Blu-Ray players and TVs in the future.

While the service is currently invite-only, you can download the applications to your iPad and iPhone- though you’ll only be able to get access to a couple of episodes. The service will launch over the coming months, however, so if you don’t get an invite, then don’t fret. The Playstation 3 will be getting support soon enough, but the Xbox 360 will only get Hulu Plus support in 2011. I don’t know about you guys, but being able to watch back catalogs and current catalogs of shows in HD across a myriad of devices is absolutely worth the $10 a month for me. Even though a few episodes of the show are available for free, being able to watch an entire series for $10 is a great deal. The way I see it, it’s a supplement to my Netflix subscription, and a welcome one.

Anyone else going to be checking this out when it hits officially?

THQ Confirms Saints Row Film

This is a crazy coincidence, you guys- this very morning, I woke up, looked in the mirror and said “It is truly a shame that there is still not a film based on the critically-acclaimed Blockbuster hit Saints Row.” And now, as luck would have it, there totally is!

Recently, THQ bigwigs confirmed that there would be a Saints Row crossmedia blowout that would include collectible cards, books, merchandise (presumably oven mitts, lunch boxes, stuffed animals, underwear) but up until the week of E3, the prospect of a film was just a rumor. Not anymore. It looks like 50 Cent could also play a large role in the creation of the film as well, as over a year ago, he was supposedly optioning the film. I don’t think it would surprise me at all to see 50 Cent in a big budget film about gang life.

Sarcasm aside, I think Saints Row is a crazy fun series. I enjoyed the first two games, and I’m looking forward to the third, but I’m not sure how a film would work. Saints Row isn’t exactly the most story-driven series, but maybe if John Singleton is put at the helm, it could come out pretty well.

Kim Kardashian In Talks To Do WHAT?!

A little over a month ago, one of the worst environmental crises in US history when an oil rig exploded and began to leak gallons and gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. In less than 50 days, the oil has covered the area of multiple US states, and is universally accepted to be one of the, if not the, biggest tragedies of the year. However, in light of what I’m about to break to you, BP’s oil spill could actually become a runner-up* to the worst tragedy of the year.

And what tragedy am I talking about? Kim Kardashian replacing Angelina Jolie in the next Tomb Raider film. Now, I think we can all agree that the Tomb Raider series hasn’t exactly produced the Citizen Kane of our generation, but I never thought they’d think bringing in the buxom brunette from Keeping Up Wtth The Kardashians would make the series better. Of course, if this report holds true, then “better” might not exactly be what they’re going for.

Kim is wanted to play a far more comic-strip version of Lara which would be shot in 3-D and aimed at a teen audience.

I made a pie graph of the parts of that sentence I like, where red represents parts I like, and blue represents parts I do not like.

*Editor’s note: I joke, but what’s currently going on in the Gulf of Mexico is absolutely gut-wrenching and terrible. Of course I don’t truly think that Kim Kardashian being cast as the lead in Tomb Raider is a disaster on the level of BP’s oil spill, but unless Kim Kardashian is actually a closet thespian, I think it’s safe to say that this isn’t exactly a great idea. Of course, that’s just my opinion, and not the opinion of my employers or anyone else that writes for Ripten blah blah blah copyright 2010. By the way, it is surprisingly difficult to find a SFW photograph of Kim Kardashian. I am just saying.

James Cameron to Make More Games with Ubisoft?

James Cameron is apparently exploring the option of making more games with Ubisoft after they developed and published Avatar: The Game back in December.

“I’ve got a lot of stories, and I don’t have enough time to make them all as movies. That’s something I’m exploring with Ubisoft to see if maybe’s a relationship around just getting these stories and world ideas into games, just completely independent of movies. You know, good ideas and visuals are exactly that.”

At first I was a bit upset that Cameron was using videogames as his fallback medium, because I took that as him viewing games inferior to film. But the more I think about it, the more I realize film is just the medium he loves and has loved for the thirty years he’s been involved with it. That being said, I think it’s great for a filmmaker of his caliber to be so enthusiastic about videogames.

Hilarious Review of The Phantom Menace

While perusing newly-crowned Ripten writer Gavin Bard’s personal site, big boss man Chad Lakkis came across a highly entertaining review of The Phantom Menace that Gavin linked to back in December. I know it’s a month old, but for those who haven’t seen it, here it is.

And don’t just take my word for it. Chad himself called the guy “pure gold” and later said “it is pure fucking gold.” Not that creative with his quotes, but give him a break, it’s late. Hit the jump to check out the video.

PlayStation Store Leaks “Armored” For Free

Yesterday, in a fantastic show of irony, a movie was put up in the PlayStation Store for free, in both HD and PSP formats. The movie, you ask? Armored- a movie that hasn’t even been in theatres for a month. Sure, it wasn’t that great of a film, but it was on the PlayStation Store for about 5 hours yesterday before being pulled, a leak that’s puzzling both Sony and the film’s distributor, Screen Gems.

Of course, that’s the question everyone is asking- it doesn’t even make sense for the film to be in a digital format so early. Unless they were originally planning to go direct-to-DVD with this film, then someone at Sony really messed up.

On a completely unrelated note, the film was directed by a man named Nimrod.

Hitman 5 Coming in 2010 to Tie into Movie Sequel

I mentioned yesterday that a screenwriter has been hired for Hitman 2 and now we learn that a new game is coming as well and it will be directly related to the movie’s storyline.

Hitman 5 will be released late next year and certain parts of the story will tie in with certain parts of the movie. There are no details as of yet, but I don’t like the idea of combining a movie that’s probably going to be awful with a game that could very well be awesome. It seems like a recipe for tears.

Writer Hired for Hitman Movie Sequel

Keeping in line with other game-to-film adaptations, Hitman was pretty bad. It was a clumsy mess and Timothy Olyphant looked really goofy with a shaved head. Nevertheless, it made a killing, so a writer has been hired to pen the sequel.

Kyle Ward, the screenwriter who seems to be writing the upcoming film adaptation of Kane & Lynch, will also be writing the Hitman sequel. If any of you know any actual hitmen, you may be able to save us from the Hitman sequel and Kane & Lynch with one simple phone call.

BioShock Movie to be Directed by Gore Verbinski: Might Not Suck

A deal has been signed between Universal and Take Two to turn arguably one of last year’s greatest games, into a film. The movie is to be directed by Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski, whose previous work includes The Ring and The Weather Man.

As any gamer knows, most good games become terrible films, with the last major game set for movie stardom, Halo, failing to leave the design board. Is there any hope that BioShock: The Movie won’t suck? Thankfully, yes. In an interview with The Cut Scene, Verbinski had these comforting words for us: “We want to take all the strengths from the property. Of all the games I’ve played, this is the one that I felt has a really strong narrative.”

He also spoke about how the game’s more adult themes would not be compromised for the sake of the film, “We’re prepared to make it an R-rated movie. I don’t intuitively see it as PG-13. The content and the graphic nature of the story itself is smarter than that. It’s not for young kids,” adding that “I think we’ll go right up to the edge with the Little Sisters. I don’t want to soften it to the point where the core audience feels betrayed.”

He also mentions during the interview that he and BioShock’s creative director, Ken Levine, have talked on the phone, discussing what will and won’t work within the confines of a film. Since most of the game’s strength and success hinged on Levine’s vision, this can only be a good thing.
