Final Fantasy XIII Versus Will Excite You Says FF Producer

In a recent interview with Edge, Final Fantasy XIII-2 Producer, Yoshinori Kitase, told the publication that the Final Fantasy Versus XIII title, still in development, will get people “excited when they next see it…”

“We released a trailer in January and since then there has been nothing, but I can assure you the team is working extremely hard on it and I think people will be excited when they next see it…”

Those are big words, considering the game was announced back in 2006 and I haven’t personally been excited about anything Final Fantasy related in years. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve wanted to be, and even tried to be, but no dice. They are going to have to really wow me to get my vote.

Here’s to hoping it’s half as good as its Sega Master System counterpart.

Job Listing Raises Hopes for an Xbox 360 Version of Final Fantasy XIII Versus

For the past two years Square Enix has made it perfectly clear that Final Fantasy XIII Versus is a PS3 exclusive. Recently, it has been revealed the developer was looking into a multi-platform release.

Now today, an interesting job listing has been found for a Versus XIII “Battle Planner”. Which by itself means nothing, but among the requirements for the position include “development experience on a PS3, or Xbox 360 package title”.

Because of this mention of an ‘Xbox 360 package title’ people are anticipating another multiplatform title (not unlike Final Fantasy XII), which should be considered likely considering how much extra money the 360 version of Final Fantasy made.

It’s like deja vu all over again.

Yep, you heard it right…just a penny short of $20.00. Where? At Amazon.com, but only for the PS3 version.

Final Fantasy XII is the much anticipated, though later critized, 13th installment of the seemingly never ending Final Fantasy series. Though very strong in sales, the game was widely critized for it’s linear gameplay and inferior Xbox 360 port. Graphically on the PS3 it set the benchmark with stunning 1080p color rich visuals.

Do I have Final Fantasy XIII yet? No, but at $20 I’d be crazy not to consider. You’ll still find it at many retailers for 49.99.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII: Characters and Story Complete, Revealed In Due Time

The latest quick update on the status of Final Fantasy Versus XIII comes as a follow up to the Famitsu interview and high res scans we reported on last week.

Dengeki Playstation Vol.474, features an interview with FF Versus XIII Director, Tetsuya Nomura, in which the following details were revealed.

- The game “scenario” or story is complete.
- The game’s character designs have been agreed upon.
- The clothing, designed by Japanese manufacturer Roen, is final.

So let’s recap. We now know that the world will be massive and fully explorable thanks to Famitsu, and we now know that it will ship with a completed plot, and a cast of fleshed out characters who are fashionably fully clothed.

Alright, I think I’m ready to fork over some more of my hard earned cash.

Full Famitsu Final Fantasy Versus XIII Nomura Interview and Hi-Res Mag Scan

It seems like just yesterday that we were reporting on a partially translated interview with Final Fantasy Versus XIII’s Tetsuya Nomura and showing you some medium res leaked magazine scans. Maybe because it was yesterday.

Well, we’re back with a little more of the same. Only this time, we’ve got the fully translated interview and a bit of a higher quality scan.

Q: Is this a real-time screenshot we’re looking? The image quality is very good.
A:Yes it’s an image in real-time using the real hardware. We aim to improve the quality you’re seeing now even further. As of now we can’t share more details in full scale right now, so we removed the menus and subscreens where it shows Noctis expression (image projected on the subscreen).

Q: Were the party members also there originally?
A: Yes, we removed because we haven’t formally announced their weapons and clothes yet.

Q: The exquisiteness and shades are like a photograph taken from real life.
A: Indeed, we’re using physical calculations to determine the movement of the clouds. By this time it allow us to filter sunlight and others on Versus XIII.

Q:Is the cliff to the wilderness & the Gas Station set in the same location?
A: Yes in the back of the Store is the cliff to the extended wilderness. You can walk all the way, to everything you see but the mountains.

Q:What’s this giant Enemy on the other screen?
A: It’s a Military Behemoth and he actually bears a huge sword in his back. As for this pictures, the battle screen were on the screen but we omitted it.

Q: The street of Shinjuku is real.
A:Yes, it’s our model for this, even the bicycle lanes and crosswalks are decipted. But the sense of distance has been changed a bit since the last time. Right out of the city you encounter the wilderness with electric wires every as it’s this kind of territory for this country.

Q: This region, It is only the Prologue, the early stages, nature is so even there.
A: Movement around this area is easy because you can use a car. Getting on and off the car can be done anytime, but only not possible to go all the way through it because it leads to a region underwater that has been shown on promotional trailers before.

Q: Monsters appear on the field?
A: (Laughter)…Yes, there are monsters that appear on the field; Some staff were doing the tests and were surprised by how good looking some are in the evening sun.

Q: Are the battles seamless, what about the world?
A: It’s basically seamless and we aim to make it even more seamless, but there are loadings between big areas.

Q:Information disclosure, is very restrict as of now.
A: Development is very advanced along and according to expectations we’re taking steady steps; wait at ease please, information on Versus XIII will come. Moreover, we’re making preparations for a Big announcement.

Q: You can actually see a signboard and things written inside in the screenshot?
A:The signboard is still temporary even though the inside of the Gas Station is modeled after the Stations in the US in detail. It’s possible to go up there using the stairs.

Q: Do you play in this perspective the whole game?
A: Yes. The camera basically sits in this position. We decided to priority to the character’s presence and the world; that said we decided to scrap the over the shoulder perspective of the world.

New Final Fantasy Versus XIII Interview Promises Massive Open World Exploration

A recently translated interview conducted with Square Enix’s Tetsuya Nomura, hints at the massive open world that will be available to players in Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Nomura made the following comment regarding the game’s shear size:

“If you try to go all the way to the end, it’s truly far.”

Additional details from the interview reveal that with the exclusion of the mountains, the world is fully explorable, and will be almost completely seamless with very few transitional loading screens. It will feature destructible objects, clouds constructed from real world physics calculations, and fluid transitions in and out of battle sequences.

As someone who has followed the Final Fantasy franchise for years and struggled to make it through the largely linear gameplay of Final Fantasy XIII, this news brought a smile to my face.

Square Enix “Looking Into” Final Fantasy Versus XIII Xbox 360 Release

This just in. Money makes the world go round. People like it. You can use it to buy stuff and the more of it you have, the more stuff you can buy!

In tandem with this breaking news, we’d also like to announce that Square Enix is now considering the release of the highly anticipated Final Fantasy Versus XIII title on both the Xbox 360 console and the PlayStation 3 despite a previous announcement in 2006 stating that the game would be a PS3 exclusive.

In a recent interview, Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada was asked whether Versus XIII would be better served as a multi-platform release, to which he responded:

“We’ll be looking into it internally until right before the formal announcement.”

We’d like to go on the record saying that we knew this game would never be released as a PS3 exclusive back in August of 2008. Of course, our sources at the time lead us to believe it would be a highly lucrative Sega Master System port, but a potential Microsoft deal would surely line one or two pockets as well.

If you’re a PS3 owner looking to scream bloody murder at some Square Enix reps while drooling over Versus XIII footage at this year’s E3, you may find yourself even more upset. The game’s director, Tetsuya Nomura, has already gone on the record saying there’s a pretty good chance it won’t be there due to some developmental revisions.

UPDATE: In response to this story making its way around the web, Square Enix CEO, Yoichi Wada, issued a brief statement via Twitter. The tweet is in Japanese, however Andriasang provided the following translation:

“It looks like the ‘net is heating up. Versus on Xbox? What I said at the earnings press conference was just that until a formal announcement is made at the announcement time, all points about all titles are not finalized.”

So it seems that he is asking that we settle down and allow the process to see itself through. However, nothing about that statement denies the possibility of it seeing the light of day on Xbox 360. Not much reassurance for upset fans if you ask me.

Map Changes May Delay Final Fantasy Versus XIII E3 Showing

A recent Famitsu interview with Final Fantasy Versus XIII Director, Tetsuya Nomora, sheds light on some production changes that may cause the title to miss its E3 outing opportunity. According to Nomora, the world map is “lacking” and needs to be revamped. After initially saying that the game could make E3 with if all went according to plan, this latest interview reveals a little uncertainty on the director’s part.

PS3 Exclusive Lost? Final Fantasy Versus XIII Being Ported to Sega Master System…

It appears that Microsoft isn’t the only console maker with deep pockets. While Sega can’t remember who works for them and has made it clear that they have no intentions of reviving the Dreamcast console, it seems that the company hasn’t forgotten the pain that Sony caused them when its PlayStation first hit the market.

Sega kept shut for years, waiting for the right moment to strike. Seeing Sony in what appeared to be a moment of weakness after the Microsoft/Final Fantasy XIII payout, Sega made the call to go in for the kill. The company now has a Square Enix port of their own — FF Versus XIII.

First look at this amazing game after the break.

The loading screen features classic Sega Master System split second response — you won’t have to sit there all day while Mr. Mustache smokes a cigar.

Gameplay mechanics will have you saying Mega Man what? We believe that the screen above is real in-game footage and not CGI, but we have yet to receive confirmation from Sega or Square Enix.

This cinematic presentation in the Sega Master System port of FFXIII Versus leaves me wanting to see more. Unfortunately the game is still in the early stages of development (hard to believe) and will not be touched again until Square finishes the PS3 version.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII Trailer Leaked

The boys over at finalfantasy-xiii.net unearthed a Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer they believe to be leaked from Jump Festa 2007. I have never seen this trailer before, and it appears to be the real deal, however it looks like 100% CG footage with little to no actual gameplay. Video quality is decent, so it was likely shot with an HD camera and scaled down for web use.

Finalfantasy-xiii.net claims they are unsure of the source (who shot it). The video is currently being hosted by a Photobucket user, and I am fairly sure it won’t be around for long. Have at it after the jump.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII Delay Untrue – Official Statement Issued By Square Enix

We reported just two days ago that a Famitsu article was translated revealing among other things a statement made by FF Versus XIII director Tetsuya Nomura in which he claims that resources were reallocated from Final Fantasy Versus and asked to instead assist in the completion of Final Fantasy XIII.

This translation along with further comments made in the article lead many to believe the game would be delayed even further. However, the following response was issued by Square Enix regarding the matter:

“Reports that development for Final Fantasy Versus XIII is on hold are false … The truth of the situation is that when free, some staff from the Versus team have been helping with the XIII team on development of Final Fantasy XIII. Development for both titles is continuing as originally scheduled.”

It appears now that the game is still very much on schedule — the same schedule that has had us in the dark for a very long time now. Hopefully some light will be shed during this years E3.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII Still A Ways Off

Announcing games extremely early has always seemed unnecessary and a bit torturous for fans. When multiple Final Fantasy XIII titles were announced at E3 2006 gamers were understandably excited, but two years later little more is known about the games.

A recent issue of Famitsu reports that the wait looks set to continue for quite awhile.

At E3 2006 Square Enix surprised fans and gamers by announcing Final Fantasy XIII hot on the heels of Final Fantasy XII’s release. What’s more, it wasn’t just Final Fantasy XIII that was on the way, but also Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII.

While various trailers have surfaced and Agito was revealed as a mobile title, we’ve heard little more about the projects. Now, Famitsu has revealed that the majority of the Final Fantasy Versus XIII team has been pulled off the title and reassigned to Final Fantasy XIII itself. Agito XIII is also said to still be in early production and story development.

Such a move does not bode well for the possibility of seeing the game any time soon, let alone its spin-offs.

In the case of Final Fantasy it’s a given that more games are on the way. That’s not always the case, but is there really any benefit (for game developers anyway) to such early announcements? Square certainly should have known it was unnecessary with Final Fantasy. At least wait until there’s something to show.

While the end of 2009 is the earliest Final Fantasy XIII proper is expected to make an appearance, that’s still a long way off. Live in the now, enjoy what’s out there and for the sanity of everyone just forget about Square Enix’s megaseries for the time being.
