Vita Gets Sony Entertainment Network Update

Before the rest of the world even gets its hands on the Playstation Vita, Sony is updating the the handheld’s firmware. Yes, this means that when you get your system next week (you crazy super-early adopters) or the week after (for the rest of us), you’ll immediately be prompted to download an update. It wouldn’t be a Sony system if you didn’t have to bring it up to speed before playing, right?

Thankfully, the software comes with more than just the new Sony Entertainment Network coat of paint.

Mac users will be able to manage their Vita’s memory with new support, video recording is now enabled and you can even use the handheld as a GPS with the new Maps application.

New 3DS Firmware Update Available Now!

The new 3DS firmware update is now available! To get it just log into the 3DS eShop and you’ll be prompted on how to start the download. This firmware update includes 3D Video Recording, New Game Content For Street Pass Mii Plaza, and the ability to transfer downloadable software between 3DS systems.

Nintendo Delays 3DS Firmware Update

The 3DS firmware update, that was scheduled to be released by the end of November, has been officially delayed. Nintendo’s official site states that the anticipated update will be available by December 8th, 2011. Thankfully it’s not a big delay.

Nintendo’s site also reconfirms what this update will do!

3DS November Firmware Update Detailed

Satoru Iwata revealed information about the upcoming 3DS firmware update coming in November. The update will include video recording software which will allow recording up to 10 minutes and have many other options.

Iwata also detailed the update for StreetPass Mii Plaza. There will be more puzzles to finish and new quest to complete! Additionally there will be some sort of Map that will allow players to see where the people they have StreetPassed with are from.

This firmware update will also include an update for the 3DS eShop and allow players to transfer digital 3DS software from one 3DS to another.

Firmware Version 3.72 Incoming For PS3

Get ready to watch your progress bars fill once more, as a new firmware build is on it’s way to your PlayStation. Don’t expect anything feature heavy at all, as it’s only a minor performance update;

A new PS3 system software update, v3.72, will be released soon. With this minor update, system stability during use of PS3 format software and network services has been improved.

I think I speak on behalf of all PS3 owners by saying, yay…

Microsoft Stops Console Piracy In Its Tracks

RipTen only reported a short while ago about the new Xbox 360 Title Update and how it was introducing anti-piracy measures; XGD3 to be exact, as well as increased disc data sizes and new anti-piracy checks.

Since the launch of Microsoft’s beautiful Xbox 360 Slim, the “scenes” most dedicated hacker “c4eva” has been hard at work on cracking the new Slim LiteOn drives, of which the 9504 Firmware hack was released last week.

Since then however it has been reported that the new dashboard update coming to Xbox 360 owners the world over can actively modify and flash the internal drives of consoles to new and updated firmware, the firmware in this case being a new 0272 kernel.

Previously the only exploitable firmware (Correct at time of writing) was the 9504 firmware, and as aforementioned, it was possible to update to a new custom firmware that allowed the use of “backup” games.

Xbox 360 Hacks is now reporting however that the new 2.0.13141.0 and 2.0.13142.0 Xbox 360 Dashboard is actively re-writing flashed drives and replacing the custom firmware with new official firmware that nullifies their ability to play illegitimate games, literally stopping console piracy dead in its tracks.

If Microsoft has the ability to do this it then forces the people working to counter the firmware to restart all their work and this could be an infinite loop with Microsoft finally being one step ahead after the Xbox 360 was rort by piracy for years prior.

Microsoft Launching New Xbox 360 Discs To Combat Piracy

For those of you who frequent the informative blog of Xbox LIVE’s Larry ‘Major Nelson’ Hyrb, you will have no doubt heard that Microsoft is launching a new Xbox 360 disc beta for residents of the United States.

What you may not know however is exactly what the discs are for or what they’re going to be doing.

Whilst nothing was ‘officially’ exposed during the post by Hyrb, Xbox 360 scene hacker ‘commodore4eva’ aka ‘c4eva’ has access to the Xbox 360 SDK and has revealed exactly what the new discs will do, saying;

[2011-03-29 11:11PM UTC] #fw MS will introduce xgd3 – this will add more ap checks, cvi (content integerity) checks, increase the disc size and adds a new layer for protection issues – all in the 20500 sdk! bring it on

Now when he says the disc size is being increased don’t think: “OH MAH GAWD BIGGER GAMES!” as it’s only increasing by a measly 1GB.

With c4eva and the Jungle Flasher team already in the final testing stages of their Xbox 360 Slim custom firmware, I can assure both you and Microsoft that this update will be futile and it wont be long before this is hacked, too.

PS3 Firmware 3.56 Is Live – Hackers and Homebrew Beware (Update)

Yep, Sony has come like a thief in the night and dropped firmware 3.56 upon us. What does it change? We know it’s a “security patch” but not much else.

Probably a good idea for those with hacked consoles and homebrew to avoid this one, but then again you should be doing that stuff anyway (tsk, tsk). Sony hasn’t given up yet!

We’ll keep you updated with more info as we get it.

Update: It’s been confirmed that it kills homebrew and installs over with current existing CFW’s.

Update: Hackers are claiming that the new keys have already been decrypted and are working on ways to continue to run homebrew and custom firmware.

The Battle continues.

Firmware Update 3.50 is now Live! These are the new features included:

-3D Blu-ray Support

-Move can be used as web browser cursor.

-Users reports can be sent from PS3 through ‘Friends’ tab.

-3D notice screen for 3D enabled games.

-Better access to Facebook profile.

-Better description of the 14 more common errors.

-Updated user interface for PlayStation Plus in PlayStation Store.

-New Qriocity icon in the Music section. (Service not available yet).

PS3 Firmware 3.50 with 3D Blu-ray Support Due September 21

When Sony wants a new technology to catch on, they really know how to push it. Just as the PS2 did for DVD’s and the PS3 for Blu-ray it is now time to support 3D Blu-ray movies. Starting September 21st with firmware update 3.50, it begins.

Originally planned for October, Sony has decided to push it a month earlier in an effort to no doubt continue to ‘future proof’ their PS3 game console. As with similar Sony pushes, this will no doubt support the format hopefully bringing 3D into the mainstream.

No further details on what other features might be included with this update.

June PlayStation 3 Firmware Update Will Support 3D Gaming

If you’re one of the twelve people on earth that own a 3D television set you’ll be very happy to hear that the PS3 will be getting a firmware update in June that allows for 3D gaming support. The image above is a scan from issue #45 of PlayStation: The Official Magazine that comes to us via System Link. It reads:

“The firmware update coming in June that will get your PS3 ready for 3D gaming won’t do the same for its Blu-ray functionality, but according to Sony that will come at a later date. 3D is simply too big for this to not happen at all.”

Call me a Negative Nancy if you like, but I’m not sold on this whole 3D television stuff. Sound off in the comments section below. Is 3D television, and more importantly — 3D gaming, something you are interested in opening your wallet for?

Just one day after the Sony next-gen console celebrates it’s third birthday, the PlayStation 3 gets firmware update v3.10, a perfect compliment to half eaten ice cream cake.

Official Sony Blog Confirms Facebook & Gamercard Customization as Part of v3.10 Update

Several leaked interface images surfaced one the web a few days ago depicting new gamercard customization and Facebook integration for the PlayStation 3 console. Without official word from Sony, it was easy to believe that they were nothing more than well done Photoshop job. Well, that official word came today. As part of an announcement on their Official PlayStation blog, Sony confirmed that the features listed above will be a part of their upcoming v3.10 update.

Feature fanatics may be a tad upset to find that the Facebook integration won’t have all the bells and whistles out the gate, as the blog explains that its initial push will allow PlayStation owners to share trophy achievements as well as their recent PlayStation Network purchases with other Facebook friends, with future updates allowing for a more complete Facebook experience down the road.

No release date information has been announced for the v3.10 update, but we’ll keep you posted as soon as we know more. In the mean time, check out the walkthrough video below for a first look at these new features.

PS3 firmware update 2.70 released, proper in-game text chat added

The 2.70 update for the PS3 is now available, and includes a host of new features. The update features in-game text chat for up to 16 people at one time, and allows three text chat boxes per PS3, for use with the wireless keypad, the on-screen keyboard, or any keyboard peripheral you might have that works.

Finally, Sony. Sending single message after single message to my friends when trying to set up a game with them was tedious and stupid. See the rest of the new features after the jump (and a demo from Eric Lempel).

Friends list on the XMB (XrossMediaBar)

* Sort your friends via their online status
* Attach larger files to the messages you send to your friends (file size will increase from 1MB to 3MB)

Video delivery service on PlayStation Store

* Video files you’ve purchased from the PlayStation Store can be backed up to an external storage device and then restored to PS3’s internal hard drive for playback – so you can clear up space on your hard drive and then restore the video anytime in the future
* Videos you’ve purchased for PSP (PlayStation Portable) system can now be transferred to PS3 for playback

Improved PS3 Firmware 2.41 Online Now

It appears that the on again off again love affair between PS3 owners and their 2.40 firmware update is back on again — in the form of 2.41. Hopefully, this time it will last.

According a post by Eric Lempel, Director of PlayStation Network Operations, on the Official PlayStation blog, the 2.40 firmware update issues have been resolved and the update will be back online “shortly”.

“Hi, everyone. As many of you know, we released PS3 firmware update v2.40 last week, but had to take it offline temporarily because, for a limited number of users, the XMB wouldn’t display after the update was installed. We’ve been able to fix the problem, and I’m happy to report that firmware update v2.41 will be released shortly.

We want to extend our apologies to the PlayStation community for any inconvenience. Now we’ll be looking forward to seeing everyone online and racking up those trophies!”

We believed that the update would occur sometime this week, and wile I have not personally downloaded it yet, I have received several email tips from readers confirming that it is back online. Thanks to all who emailed.

Problems Reported With PS3 2.4 Update

Less than a day old, Sony has reportedly taken down PS3′s 2.4 Update. Users on the Official Playstation Message Boards have claimed that after installing the update, their PS3 would fail to boot up.

Looks like the rejoicing over all the new features was a bit premature in this case. We’re sure everything will be sorted out quickly– after all, this doesn’t exactly look good for Sony going into E3 in two weeks.

Update: Sony has responded to the issue at hand via their official PlayStation blog, confirming that the update has in fact been taken down and that they’re working to determine what went wrong in order to quickly rectify the situation. [ Thanks Bruce ]

ISO Loader Discovered In New Sony PSP Firmware

Will this discovery change the world as we know it? Probably not, but it may prove to be pretty cool for PSP owners seeking immediate gratification. PSP fan site devsgen.com is reporting that user “Dark_Alex” has discovered the an ISO loader inside the Playstation Portable’s new 3.50+ firmware.

The exact file is called “np9660.prx”, and that means nothing to you well then you are in good company. What is this all about? Well, the speculation is pointing to a future of “gaming on demand” with the PSP. Can that be confirmed at the moment? Nope.

PS3 Firmware, The Best Is Yet To Come…

The head honchos in the Playstation 3 technology department say that the firmware will undergo yet another round of improvements.

Sony Computer Entertainment’s CTO Kawanishi and Audio Video Manager Kanehide both stated they believe there is still room for improvement by an additional 30 to 40 percent in terms of the visual upscale and overall audio quality. On top of that they added that they can foresee a fanless PS3 as well.

“We have gotten feedback from them (critics) regarding several failure patters for upconverting, but we are getting closer to the goal. I think we can improve another 30 to 40%,” said Kawanishi.

He then added, “Nothing yet comes close to the load that Folding@Home applies. And I can see the possibility of a fan-less PS3 in the future, just like there was for the PS2,”

If the idea of a fanless PS3 alone doesn’t shock you then you should probably check for a pulse. Just ask Xbox 360 owners around the world how painful an overheated unit can be.
