Old Republic Forums Go Down as BioWare Gets Blasted For Accidental Beta Emails

BioWare Senior Community Coordinator Allison Berryman has acknowledged the issue with the following response:

Hello everyone. We’re aware of the e-mails that are being reported and will have more information for you as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience!

Moments ago, BioWare’s forums for Star Wars: The Old Republic were rendered temporary unavailable due to heavy load. This appears to have been caused by an error in regard to beta invite emails. Users have been reporting they have received two emails from BioWare – one hoping that they’re enjoying testing the game and that they should fill in a survey, the other one reminding them to pre-order. Unfortunately, those receiving these emails were not invited to test the beta in the first place!

Understandably, this influx of emails raised the hopes of many users, who flocked to the forums to question, query and complain about the situation. Tensions are running high on the forums with users making their displeasure known with posts such as the below:

Vampt:

I’ve been opted in for beta testing since they first announced the kinect. I remember the day well. How could you be so foolish as to send an email like that out. That is sick and cruel. I’m growing more and more upset with you Bioware. Give me a freaking beta invite already. It’s been so many years…. this is stupid!

Lorina:

I’d like to either congratulate Bioware for a successful troll or give my commiserations to the employee who is currently getting chewed out for an incredible fail.

Masamura:

Great marketing hype by the company. Stephen Reid and his team have very unorothodox but smart PR strategies.

Despite that last sarcastic post, this is definitely not the type of publicity BioWare wants. I assume a statement of some sort will be made tomorrow to address the issue. In the mean time, the forums continue to be flooded posts relating to the issue. For what it’s worth, there is a thread with over 100 pages worth of comments on the issue, and should you wish to add yours to it, BioWare would probably appreciate it being posted in there as opposed to yet another thread being spawned.

Sorry PC Gamers, Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit Console DLC is Exclusive

Ah the tragedies of being a PC owner in a gaming world increasingly dominated by game consoles. Now it seems, not only is Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit’s first downloadable content a console exclusive, the PC won’t be getting any of the planned console DLC.

A post by one of the developers in the official EA Need for Speed forums under the name EASpenser explains Criterion’s postition:

Hey all, unfortunately we will not be releasing Need for Speed Hot Pursuit PDLC for the PC. While we are certainly committed to providing the best possible game experience and ongoing support for our PC community, (as you have already noted) we have a limited amount of resources that makes it so that we are unable to deliver new content to all platforms. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience, but on the positive side we do have more updates and content on the way for PC players–look for news very soon.

If I played Need for Speed on the PC I wouldn’t be completely discouraged, as the statement seems to hint that the PC will receive DLC of it’s own.

Help! I’ve Swallowed My World of Warcraft Authenticator and I Can’t Log In

There have been moments in my World of Warcraft playing career that I found myself searching for ways to break my addiction to the game. And while several of my conjured solutions revolved around sabotaging my authenticator, I never once thought to eat it. That’s exactly what one WoW player did — although, he claims it was an accident that took place after spinning around in his computer chair with the device not-so-firmly planted in his mouth.

“I was sitting in my chair and biting into my authenticator while thinking about several RP related story arcs that I have planned. I swivvel [sic] around in my chair and presume to fall off it and shoot the authenticator into my mouth and down my throat.”

“I have drank some of that stuff that makes you vomit, but I’m apparently resistant to a whole bottle of it. I am curious on what I should do.”

What should you do? What should you do??!!! Well, for starters unless you plan on following the advice given to you via the World of Warcraft forum trolls, the first thing you should do is dial 911. Unfortunately, modern day hospitals don’t currently employ any level 80 healing classes but I hear that real life doctors have been known to work wonders from time to time.

Oh, and those of you thinking that this RP-loving chair-spinning kid was just looking for some cheap internet attention can take comfort in his forum promise to us all — “No, I’m not trolling. I am serious.”

Exciting Resistance 3 Details From GameInformer

Wowsers!! Resistance 3 is looking better with every bit of news! A member of the Insomniac Games community forums has gotten his hands on the latest GameInformer, in which Resistance 3 is featured, and has posted the following details:

They talk about IG going mutiplat a bit… and why they are on a 3 yr cycle now

Then Resistance:
- They recap R2
- Capelli started a family with Susan (Hale’s Stepsister)
- Their son is sick so Capelli has to go to New York to get an anti-virus
- Malikov LIVES!!
- They confirm co-op campaign (Capelli, Malikov, & John Harper [Capelli's partner]) are key characters (but no alternate story co-op like R2)
- They describe a couple scenes (some related to the leaked images)
- One of the multiplayer maps is in an African Prison
- Chimeran Plant Life (that explodes when shot) shows that the world is changing
- Describes some boat scenes from the campaign
- Talk about the new smarter AI (climb over walls, and through windows and stuff)
- Long legs jumping from roof to roof shooting down at you
- The Mutator:
A new weapon that shoots biological mist that causes boils and stuff on the enemy and then makes them pop hurting the other nearby enemies
Secondary fire makes them go insane and attack their buddies
- Other Weapons:
Bullseye, Magnum, Shotgun, Auger, carbine are all back… and all weapons are upgradable as you use them more and more
Weapons are also made to look more improvised so… grenades are shaped like food cans full of nails and such…
- Online was talked about but not much is known yet:
it says they wanna make it more organized and not a cluster like the 60 player matches in R2
- Also Ted Price handed the reigns to Marcus Smith to do alot of the other work
- Humans eating humans cuz lack of food… NICE!

Story:
Basically Capelli is trying to get the Hale Vaccine which was made by Malikov from Hale’s blood… the vaccine may cure the chimeran virus… Capelli is doing this to save his son so he goes with Malikov to New York, St. Louis, etc. They also have no more gas so everything needs to be run off of Chimeran Energy cores which have to be stolen from chimeran ships…

Ripten Launches New Forum

Hey everyone. We’ve been listening to the feedback from readers and the biggest one is that our forum required a separate login in addition to the Ripten WordPress login. Well, the new forum will allow you to use the same Ripten WordPress login to access it. You can check out the new forum here and share your 360 Gamertag, PSN ID, or Mii Code with other readers.

We will also be looking into making the same change with the comment system assuming we can still retain the functionality and features members like in the DISQUS system. In the mean time, we look forward to bumping into all of you on the new forum.

Note: The old forum still exists for archive purposes and will remain functional until we feel the transition to the new one is proven.

EA Forcing Good Behavior: Get Banned on their Forum and You’re Banned from their Games

A recent post by an EA Community Staff member on the company’s Command and Conquer message board outlines changes to their policy, stating their intent to link a gamer’s forum account to their EA gaming account. Why does this matter? Because EA is planning on banning those who get banned on their forum from their games as well.

The post by the EA Community Staff member can be seen below:

Your forum account will be directly tied to your Master EA Account, so if we ban you on the forums, you would be banned from the game as well since the login process is the same. And you’d actually be banned from your other EA games as well since its all tied to your account. So if you have SPORE and Red Alert 3 and you get yourself banned on our forums or in-game, well, your SPORE account would be banned to. It’s all one in the same, so I strongly [recommend] people play nice and act mature.

All in all, we expect people to come on here and abide by our ToS. We hate banning people, it makes our lives a lot tougher, but its what we have to do.

Those banned will stay banned, but like most other internet services, its not that hard to create a new fake e-mail account. However, its a lot harder to get a new serial key =)

While I am not a fan of fanboy or over the top argumentative banter, this still seems like it is a bit much. Is it just me, or is there a hint of corporate greed in this disciplinary action? Maybe it’s the smiley face after the “harder to get a new serial key” comment that is getting under my skin, but I am not agreeing with this move.

They are essentially saying that if you have the financial means to be an asshole (i.e. you’re rich bitch), you can be as nasty as you want as long as you keep feeding their corporate machine. I have a bad feeling about this.

Aterthought: What do you think of EA’s policy change? Are you happy to see them lay the smack down, or do you think they are going about this all wrong?

Ripten Reveals New Site Design

As you can tell, we’ve made some changes to the look and feel of Ripten recently. Read on for a list of some changes and a chance to tell us what you think.

The most obvious change is to the aesthetic and color scheme. We think this new look is pretty eye-catching, and if you click around through the different consoles, you’ll see a different color background for each. We’ve also added a new retro section, where we’ll put stories about anything from previous console generations. This includes everything from the Atari age all the way to the PS1 and Xbox generations.

In addition, we’ve widened the viewable area for stories, to give our articles a little bit more breathing room. A handy A-Z game index will let you jump straight to the titles that you want to read about. But the best new feature for Ripten will be our forum — a place where you can go and shoot the shit with other readers about our breaking news, in-depth reviews, and first-look previews.
