Superhero Game Marathon Raising for Clean Water Projects

A group of Australian philanthropists have begun a 72-hour superhero game marathon to raise money for water aid.

You can join in and donate here. At the time of writing they’re torturing themselves by playing Superman 64, but there are loads of games that they plan to play through in the next 72 hours.

100% of public donations directly fund water projects by charity: water, a non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations.

If we reach our goal of $5,000, we’ll be providing clean and sustainable drinking water to 1 whole community (about 250 people!)

‘Scare to Care’ Running Amnesia: The Dark Descent Fundraiser This Weekend

This weekend Tim and Vernon Shaw of ‘Scare to Care‘ will be running a charity fundraiser and broadcasting it live on the web. They’re playing Amnesia: The Dark Descent- so expect a few screams.

Not only that, but the brothers will be doing everything in their power to scare the living hell out of each other live on Ustream. As Vernon puts it:

On Saturday I will try to start and finish Amnesia while my older brother (Tim) and a group of volunteers try to scare me outside of the game in every way imaginable. On Sunday, we will switch roles and Tim will try to start and finish the game while myself and the group of volunteers try to reciprocate the scares.

The cause they’re doing all this for is the Camp Kesem UCSD, a charity which runs a summer camp for the children of cancer victims. It seems a worthy cause and the guys are a few hundred bucks off their $1000 target so please give what you can. Good luck lads!

Third Annual Zeldathon Raising Funds for the National Children’s Advocacy Center

The 2010 charity Zelda marathon is revving its engine today, ready to get off to a flying start today (Monday, June 5th) at 6pm EST. The marathon will run for 72 hours, and will be raising money for the National Children’s Advocacy Center, a charity that is doing its bit to prevent child abuse.

The Zeldathon team will be playing all of the major console Zelda titles (The Legend of Zelda, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Link To The Past, Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess), back to back, for 72 hours. You can watch them do it live right here or indeed on the Justin.TV channel. Of course, you can donate to help them reach their goal here.

“Our goal is to raise over $1,000 for the NCAC,” said Pablo Penton, co-founder of Zeldathon. “We’ve met our goal the past two years and we have no doubt we can do it again with the support of all our viewers.”

The Zeldathon video game marathon began in August of 2008 when two FIU students, Pablo Penton and Sean Gonzalez, watched a video game marathon based around the Super Mario games.
“We were quite impressed with how much money they raised and the fun they had,” Penton said. “We figured we could do the same.”

I say good luck to them; it’s always nice to see gamers having a great time combined with a good cause. Here’s to another year’s successful fundraiser!

Master Chief is a Political Liability

The lexicon of American politics includes many derogatory terms: carpetbagger, hatchet man, or flip-flopper. Now we can add “Halo player” to the list.

In the Maricopa County District 1 Supervisor race in Arizona, incumbent Republican Fulton Brock is slamming Democratic challenger Ed Hermes in his campaign literature as a “Halo gamer.”

The mail-out is a one page pamphlet which shows a side-by-side comparison of the two in an attempt to cast Hermes in a negative light as young and inexperienced.

This mail-out comes after Hermes continues to fundraise more successfully than Brock, who has committed a series of political faux pas during his tenure. In August, Brock was secretly taped while meeting with local activists that landed him in the proverbial aqua fervens.

Hermes, 24, is running on the platform of fiscal responsibility, public accountability, and “n0 c0nzol3 haxz0rz,”
