Uncharted 4: The Last of Us – Starring Jak and Daxter

What do Naughty Dog’s Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter and Uncharted franchises have in common? Naughty Dog stepped away, despite fans clamoring for more.

I hear you. We don’t know that Naughty Dog is moving on from the Uncharted series. It’s true, we don’t. However, given that they are starting to pass the reigns over to Sony Bend (Uncharted: Golden Abyss), it’s not too much of a stretch to speculate that the studio is getting ready to move on.

More credence was given during a recent interview with Game Informer. Naughty Dog co-President Evan Wells detailed that a new Jak and Daxter was under strong consideration, but ultimately passed up, in favor of The Last of Us, their upcoming not-zombie survival game. The team that would have handled a Jak and Daxter reboot? The crack team of commandos in charge of the Uncharted series.

“Even if we felt like we’re going to give the fans another Jak and Daxter, we felt we weren’t going to give them the game that they wanted. We would end up limiting the direction that the company had this passion for while simultaneously not creating the game that fans wanted. We just realised we were going to just do everybody a disservice. So at that point, the conversations started to move in a new direction.”

“I guess there’s a possibility the Uncharted team could move on to Jak and Daxter. It’s still up in the air, but I wouldn’t think that’s going to happen because I think we’d run into all of the same problems with that team that we did with this team.”

Rather than revisit old IPs and possibly disappoint the fans, Naughty Dog is taking their next big step with The Last of Us.

So, there you have it, folks. If you want to play more Jak and Daxter, you’ll have to play old Jak and Daxter when the HD collection (compiling the first three games in the series) arrives on the Playstation 3 tomorrow.

Naughty Dog Says “The Last of Us” is More Than Just Another Zombie Game

A couple of days ago, Game Informer revealed the cover for their March issue featuring The Last of Us.

The Uncharted series, first teased us with The Last of Us at the November 2011 Spike Video Game Awards. The game will be a single player, third person, horror survival game. The title is set in a post-apocalyptic Earth across several U.S. cities. Survivors Joel and 14-year-old Ellie must kill and scavenge in order to survive in a world that has been decimated by a killer strain of fungus. Standing in their way are the other survivors and monsters that were once human, but have sense succumbed to the infection, now transformed into horrific zombie-like creatures.

More zombies? Yeap. Some (I) would say the zombie genre is overdone and needs to finally die. We’ve been up to our asses in the undead for the past several years in everything from video games, to TV and even Christmas gifts. Naughty Dog is promising something different, though, and the survival aspect of the game might make an interesting departure from wasting wave after wave of undead. The graphics, so far, look top notch; time will tell, but the hype is already building.

There is a little bit of science behind the game, inspired in part by the BBC documentary Planet Earth, which talked about the Cordyceps fungus. A particularly nasty strain infects insects, notably ants, and replaces the host tissue with its own. End result: the host ends up growing something that looks like a baseball bat out of its head, goes crazy, climbs up to a high spot, and explodes, spreading spores all over the place. Nasty as hell, but don’t worry, the fungus is not harmful to humans.

While that is pretty much all of the background we know for now, it’s possible the game will tie in with the Uncharted series somehow. An Easter Egg (the game kind, not the big ass rabbit kind) was spotted in Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception in the form of a newspaper with a headline related to The Last of Us story. Of course, actual tie-ins are not confirmed at this point, and it will likely have little bearing on the gameplay experience in either game, but it is neat, nonetheless.

Whoops. Epic Mickey 2 Revealed in Disney Newsletter.

Two years ago, Warren Spector of Deus Ex fame and his studio Junction Point put out Epic Mickey for the Wii. The game put you in the role of Mickey Mouse and had you travel the animated Disney lands to defeat the evil you helped unleash. If you liked it, you’re probably wondering where the sequel is, right? Well look no further.

A recent Disney newsletter has accidentally revealed Epic Mickey 2′s existence. Instead of being exclusively for the Wii, the sequel will include the 360 and PS3 as well. The game will also come with a co-op mode where player two becomes Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, who flies a helicopter and controls electricity to fight and solve puzzles. Like everyone’s rabbit does. Here’s the full summary from the newsletter:

“Disney Epic Mickey 2 is the latest game in the critically acclaimed Disney Epic Mickey videogame series. In this all-new action-platforming game available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii, Mickey embarks on an epic journey and is pulled back into a world filled with Disney’s forgotten characters. Players can choose to play single-player as Mickey or for the first time players can also choose two-player split screen mode. In the two-player mode one person can play as Mickey wielding magic paint and paint thinner to dynamically change the world and the second player can play as Oswald the Lucky Rabbit – Walt Disney’s first cartoon star – with the power to fly like a helicopter and use electricity to fight or friend enemies and solve challenges. Team-up and choose your path to save this forgotten world because the choices you make will alter the story and change the end of the game!”

Disney or Junction Point has yet to comment on the game’s existence, but it seems like an announcement is more than likely in the near future. If I had to bet, I’d say Game Informer will have it as their cover story. Considering that they revealed the original Epic Mickey, it makes sense.

Obsidian Confirms 5th South Park RPG Class is “The Jew”

As a Jew who loves South Park, role playing games and Obsidian Entertainment. I must say that I am outraged… that this wasn’t revealed sooner. I think I speak for Jewish Paladins everywhere when I say Mazel Tov!

In a recent interview with Game Informer, lead designer Matt McLean gave them the Jewdown on this mysterious class and also the game’s combat.

They say the Jew is a Paladin/Monk hybrid class that is “high risk / high reward.” The closer he is to death, the more powerful he becomes – Judah Maccabee style.

Awesome New South Park RPG Details Surface

Who needs to FUS ROH DAH when you can RO SHAM BO Cartman square in the nuts!

A horde of new details have emerged about the upcoming South Park RPG being developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by THQ thanks to the latest issue of Game Informer. Guess what? It sounds pretty awesome.

Here’s the rundown:

This is the first South Park game that Matt and Trey have actively worked on. They wrote all the dialogue and are doing all the voice acting. (Sweet)
The art style will be exactly the same 2D as South Park, no silly 3d rendered models like previous games. (Word)
You will play as a silent protagonist who is the new kid in town. (Aiight)
Cartman will lead you through the character creation process. (#Winning)
Your smart phone will serve as your menu and let you know where you stand with various factions around town. Ya know, like a pip boy. (Cool)
There are five classes to choose from: adventurer, paladin, rogue, wizard, and a fifth yet to be announced. (Acceptable)
The battle system will be similar to older JRPGs where the players stand on one side with enemies on the other. You know, like back when Final Fantasy games were good. (I am very cool with this)
The weapons will feature a FF7 ‘materia like’ upgrade system. (I am also very cool with this)
There will be summon attacks. (Oh hell yeah)
Apparently enemy encounters will also all be visible on the map, which sounds very Chrono Triggerish. (Yes, I am also cool with this)

Anyone else getting a real old school JRPG vibe yet?

The game will run on Obsidian’s proprietary Onyx engine which was used to make Dungeon Siege III
Trey Parker’s favorite game is Oblivion (probably Skyrim by now)
Matt Stone prefers Serious Sam and GTA.
The game will be out in the second half of 2012, which is probably still before Diablo III.

South Park: The Game Will be a “Full-Scale” RPG

Game Informer’s latest cover brings us some information on the next South Park game, and this time creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone will be more involved.

In association with THQ and Obsidian (developers of Dave’s beloved Alpha Protocol), South Park: The Game will release as “a full-scale RPG for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.” Playing as a new kid in South Park, the player will “defend the town” from threats, no doubt in reference to events in the show (hippies, probably).

South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone will be “writing the script, performing the dialogue, and overseeing the development” of the game, too- not just outsourcing that all to the developers.

More details will be revealed when the January edition of Game Informer is released.

According to THQ, the game is scheduled to be available for PS3, 360 and PC in the second half of 2012.

Rainbow Six Patriots Revealed by Ubisoft as Next GI Cover, Coming 2013

The rumours you’ve heard are true soldier. Ubisoft has officially revealed Rainbox Six Patriots.

There’s a new American-based terror threat known as the True Patriots, and it’s up to you as Team Rainbow to stop it before they overthrow the government. *cue epic music* Forget Waco, this is war.

“Terrorism has evolved, and so has Rainbow 6,” said creative director David Sears. “In Rainbow 6 Patriots, all the team play, tactics, and realism that fans of the series love have been coupled with an exciting new narrative direction. This adds an unprecedented level of humanity that will make Rainbow 6 Patriots an extremely tense and immersive experience.”

The game is scheduled for a 2013 release, so expect plenty of info to be rolling out over the next year and for Ubisoft to be bringing the game around to E3 and all the other big shows.

First Gameplay Details Emerge About Borderlands 2

Since Borderlands 2 was announced just a few days ago, the floodgates have opened and details are flooding in regarding the gameplay. These latest facts come from the newest issue of Game Informer, who has made the sequel its cover story for September.

Here’s the rundown:

- Co-op will probably be 4 players

-More responsive enemies, more varied, better AI, improvement so that they interact with each other better

- NPCs will also be improved, will move around more

- Interacting dialogue for players

- Skill tree will be similar to the first game (3 branch system)

- Claptrap seems to be returning

- Apparently, there won’t be any old weapons

- Story missions won’t be static

- Some pickups will provide temporary buffs

- Eridium – enhance weapons

- Eridium is a form of currency

- Salvador: Gunzerker, can dual-wield with any weapon (I made this prediction yesterday, sort of)

- Vault Hunters from the first game will be NPCs

- Bandits can access their own type of weaponry

- Unique styling, color, personality for each manufacturer

- Custom decals/enhancements for weapons

- Vehicles will have variety

- One vehicle: Bandit Technical

- One vehicle will have four seats

The game looks to be shaping up fantastically, and I call dibs on the Gunzerker class. Be sure to check out the September issue of Game Informer for more details.

Behold The First Darksiders II Trailer

In case you haven’t heard yet, Darksiders II is the cover story of this month’s Game Informer magazine. The game promises a new protagonist, the horseman of Death, and he has two scythes to clean up the mess that his brother, War, left for him.

The trailer from Game Informer, recaps the events of the first title (in case you missed it) and sets up the story for the second installment. There is also some gameplay of Death and his horse Despair. Enjoy!

Get Ready to Fear the Reaper in Darksiders II

Last week, we here at RipTen reported that we may soon hear big news from GI about the Darksiders sequel. Luckily, Game Informer has put the rumors to rest and finally revealed Darksiders II as their bad ass July cover.

The original Darksiders told the story of War, the Horseman of the Apocalypse who kinda forgot to check his calendar and started the Apocalypse early. Oops. Darksiders II, based on the info given, will take place during the events of the original Darksiders, set in the Abyss. War’s actions clearly effed up the rest of the world, and one of his brethren has the crappy task of picking up after him.

By checking out the cover below, you can see that you’ll be playing as Death, the Horseman of death, obviously. You’ll also notice, in typical sequel fashion, that he’s got two scythes. It kinda makes sense, given that his bro War jacked his scythe in the first game, so it’ll be interesting to see how two scythes fare in combat.

Darksiders II is said to be at E3, and the cover will be available for Game Informer subscribers the day after E3 begins, so it shouldn’t be long before we start posting up some juicy info. In the mean time, feast your eyes on the cover’s kickass artwork up above, courtesy of comic book artist Joe Madureira. And if you haven’t played Darksiders 1 already, go on and do so. Seriously, it’s awesome.

Is Darksiders 2 Set For An E3 and Game Informer Media Blowout?

We still don’t know much about Darksiders 2, but it looks like we may soon.

So far, all we know is that, it’s coming, it will feature a new protagonist, and it will take place at the same time as the original game (there’s only one apocalypse)

Anyhow, a possible tease regarding the sequel to the 2010 THQ and Vigil Games cult hit Darksiders has been discovered after Danny Bilson, an Executive Vice-President at THQ, and Darksiders media whore, made the following comment on Twitter.

This on its own isn’t special until you consider the following tweet, made by Game Informer magazine’s Chief Editor Andy McNamara, re-tweeted by Bilson a day earlier.

Why else would THQ be retweeting a GI cover announcement? Relic’s Space Marines is on the horizon but as an untested property it’s unlikely to be featured in such a prominent way. Other possible THQ publications to feature are Volition’s Red Faction: Armaggedon (but it’s way too close to release) and the recently announced Saints Row: The Third (also from Volition).

What really sells this as a Darksiders 2 teaser though is Andy’s cry about the cover art being amazing. Famed comic artist Joe Mad is the series creative director who brought an uncanny and psychotic visual flair to the title. Surely it is his talent that has elicited such an enthusiastic response.

So we’re gonna call it now: the next Game Informer will feature Darksiders 2 and will have an awesome cover drawn by Joe Mad himself.

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations Officially Revealed (Details)

Today, Ubisoft revealed the development of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, the fourth installment in the series. Led and developed by Ubisoft Montreal, with the help of Ubisoft studios Annecy, Massive Entertainment, Quebec, Singapore and Bucharest, Assassin’s Creed: Revelations will continue the Assassin’s Creed legacy as THE BEST SERIES EVER… or at least, the best historical conspiracy-breeding game on current systems.

Ubisoft Montreal’s creative director, Alexandre Amancio said:

“Delivering the final chapter of the Ezio trilogy is an important milestone in the Assassin’s Creed franchise for us and for our fans. Assassin’s Creed Revelations includes lots of new features and some significant surprises. We can’t wait to show our fans what we have in store at E3 this year.”

Ezio will be concluding his portion of this series by following the path that his mentor, Altair, forged for him, on his way to put an end to the unrest caused by Templar infiltration in Constantinople. It will also be possible to manipulate Desmond’s memories and the animus to further understand the past — probably the future, too.

Multiplayer will be back, with more levels, more characters, and more gameplay modes.

I am pretty freaking excited.

Assassin’s Creed: Revelations will be released on XBOX 360, PS3, and PC this November.

Assassin’s Creed Teaser Translated – Altair To Return?

There’s a new Assassin’s Creed teaser site up which includes glimpses of some Arabic writing. We have the translation.

The translation, provided by @Altair3Feb says that the teaser reads “Altair Ibn la Ahad,” (Altair, Son of No One) This is the full name of Altair, which leads to the suspicion that Altair will be returning in the new Assassin’s Creed game!

Allow me to say, OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG. Hopefully Altair will have more of a personality this time around. Be sure to join in on the #ACReveal at their Facebook page!

Mass Effect 3 Details. You Want Em? You Got Em!

The latest issue of Game Informer has some serious details about the final chapter in the Mass Effect saga. The info is focused on new gameplay changes and details some of the broader story aspects, which will be defined by the choices you made in the previous titles.

There are some spoilers below. They aren’t major spoilers but for those of you who wish to remain chaste and pure may want to shy away.

Most people know that the game will start will an impending reaper invasion with seemingly no hope of survival. Supposedly though, key story elements will reveal how Shepard can stop the invasion and save the galaxy.

BioWare isn’t talking about specifics (obviously) but they do make it clear that the invasion can be repelled by slowly working out what needs to be done throughout the course of the story.

Players will finally be able to see the future Earth as Shepard begins the game on his home planet, facing the consequences for his/her actions regarding events that took place in the Arrival DLC released last month. Shepard will witness the near-destruction of earth at the hands of the Reapers and will be forced to retreat in order to unite the races of the galaxy to save all sentient life.
The Illusive Man will be trying to kill Shepard by sending some of the galaxy’s deadliest agents his way. Combat against these adversaries will be more difficult than standard encounters and will have a greater emphasis on melee attacks and shooting specific armor sections.
Squad members that are confirmed for the title are Garrus, Liara, and, depending on your previous choices, Kaiden or Ashley. Wrex, Mordin, Anderson, and Legion will make appearances as non-party members provided they survived as well.
Players that are new to the series will have the opportunity to play a “previously on Mass Effect” interactive comic that will function similarly to the one included with the PS3 version of Mass Effect 2.
Mass Effect 3 is also beefing up the RPG elements to allow for branching skill trees that will allow for powers to change and evolve multiple times instead of just one.
The weapons will be based on ME2 style but will include modifications that will allow you to swap out barrels or scopes to get the most out of every weapon. Players will also be able to pick up enemy weapons and not just their ammo.
All classes will be able to use all weapons, but will be unable to carry all of them into combat (with the exception of the Solider class.) Other classes will be limited to a two-weapon expertise, with the exception of the Vanguard and Infiltrator classes, which are rumored to have three weapon specialties.
There will be no multiplayer mode, but combat is getting a few minor tweaks to help improve the cover system. BioWare gave Shepard the ability to vault over small gaps and obstructions in addition to giving him a better range of fire while taking cover. Players will no longer be required to take cover behind an obstruction before leaping over it.
There will be multiple methods to obtain loyalty of squad members that won’t be relegated to quests.
Enemies and allies will not be so obvious, nor will the missions be as straightforward as “find Saren. Kill him,” or “Find Collectors. Kill them.” Players are expected to have greater dilemmas than ever as they face the seemingly-impossible task of destroying the Reapers.
There will be a new game plus options, allowing players either continue on with unfinished business after the credits have rolled (depending on the ending they achieved) or begin again with new features.
The game will feature multiple endings and multiple pathways to the finish. Decisions made throughout the first two games will come back to play a role, such as saving the Rachni Queen, or destroying the Collector Base.

That’s all we know for now. You’ll learn more when we learn more. Mass Effect 3 will hit shelves this fall on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC

Jurassic Park – First Screenshots Surface with Details

Thanks to the latest issue of Game Informer, the first screenshots of Telltale’s new Jurassic Park Game have surfaced. We have them here for you to see.

According to Game informer the game is going to be dark and serious. You play the role of a park employee and it takes place right after the first movie. Gameplay will mix action sequences, puzzles, and Quick Time Events.

Goro and Jade Confirmed for Mortal Kombat – See First Magazine Scans

Thanks to the latest issue of Game Informer, we now know Goro and Jade are both confirmed to be in the next Mortal Kombat.

Goro returns as a boss and is diplayed firing a projectile while fighting in his traditional Lair stage. Game Informer describes his reworked background as “dark and grizzly, featuring bodies hanging from the ceiling.”

Jade’s outfit looks like mix of her Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Mortal Kombat Deception outfits – showing off lot’s of skin.

Game informer also makes mention of plans for a possible Xbox 360 exclusive character. Could Cliff B’s dream of a Gears of War character in Mortal Kombat finally be realized?

Mortal Kombat is scheduled to be released on the PS3 and Xbox 360 later this year.

Game Informer’s Big Game Sequel Reveal will be a Silent Hill Game

Game Informer’s editor Andrew Reiner announced via twitter today what the new PS3/Xbox 360 sequel is set to be revealed later this week. Although mentioning which series he declined to give the game’s full name:

“The game I was talking about this week is Silent Hill. Unfortunately, I can’t reveal the full name of it yet.”

A new Silent Hill game was also teased at E3 2010 for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

New Tomb Raider Game Box Art Revealed?

EB Games, Australia’s largest video game retailer recently uploaded their listing for the new Tomb Raider reboot, complete with box art and a short blurb about the game. EB Games has speculated the RRP at $108 AUD, although that is not the confirmed price and it’s bound to change at some point. The informative blurb about Lara Croft’s new adventure reads;

After a brutal storm destroys the boat she was traveling on, a frightened young woman is left washed ashore on an unknown beach. On her own but not alone she has only one goal, to survive.

Here begins the first adventure for a young and inexperienced Lara Croft in a story which charts the journey of an ordinary woman who finds out just how far she must go in order to stay alive.

And as this post title mentions, there is also a box art image on the listing. Check it out below;

Update: I sent off a message to EB Games online representative to try and get some light shined on the new cover art. Check it out below, and whilst it doesn’t 100% confirm the cover art, it definitely seems legitimate.

New Tomb Raider Revealed – Will Be A Reboot

It looks as if Crystal Dynamics will be rebooting the Tomb Raider franchise and diving into the origins of Lara Croft.

January’s cover of Game Informer has been revealed and with it, the unveiling of a new Tomb Raider.

They had this to say:

In this new adventure – simply titled Tomb Raider – a younger and inexperienced Lara Croft must endure both physical and emotional trauma to survive.

Judging from the image, we can be certain of a few things, Lara will be hot and she will carry a bow.

Exciting Resistance 3 Details From GameInformer

Wowsers!! Resistance 3 is looking better with every bit of news! A member of the Insomniac Games community forums has gotten his hands on the latest GameInformer, in which Resistance 3 is featured, and has posted the following details:

They talk about IG going mutiplat a bit… and why they are on a 3 yr cycle now

Then Resistance:
- They recap R2
- Capelli started a family with Susan (Hale’s Stepsister)
- Their son is sick so Capelli has to go to New York to get an anti-virus
- Malikov LIVES!!
- They confirm co-op campaign (Capelli, Malikov, & John Harper [Capelli's partner]) are key characters (but no alternate story co-op like R2)
- They describe a couple scenes (some related to the leaked images)
- One of the multiplayer maps is in an African Prison
- Chimeran Plant Life (that explodes when shot) shows that the world is changing
- Describes some boat scenes from the campaign
- Talk about the new smarter AI (climb over walls, and through windows and stuff)
- Long legs jumping from roof to roof shooting down at you
- The Mutator:
A new weapon that shoots biological mist that causes boils and stuff on the enemy and then makes them pop hurting the other nearby enemies
Secondary fire makes them go insane and attack their buddies
- Other Weapons:
Bullseye, Magnum, Shotgun, Auger, carbine are all back… and all weapons are upgradable as you use them more and more
Weapons are also made to look more improvised so… grenades are shaped like food cans full of nails and such…
- Online was talked about but not much is known yet:

Basically Capelli is trying to get the Hale Vaccine which was made by Malikov from Hale’s blood… the vaccine may cure the chimeran virus… Capelli is doing this to save his son so he goes with Malikov to New York, St. Louis, etc. They also have no more gas so everything needs to be run off of Chimeran Energy cores which have to be stolen from chimeran ships…
