McFarlane, Salvatore, and Schilling Coming to Gamestop Reckoning Midnight Launch Near You!

The release date for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is only a week from today. Chances are that if you’ve been keeping up with recent gaming, you’re at least curious or maybe even excited about this upcoming release from 38 Studios. You might even be so excited that you’re planning on attending the midnight release at Gamestop and being among the first to snag a copy. If you’re not, a recent bit of news might change your mind.

According to EA, the lead visionaries for Amalur are going to be making guest appearances at Gamestop midnight releases around the US. Curt Schilling, Todd McFarlane, R.A. Salvatore and Ken Rolston are all scheduled to meet and greet the fans, with the doors opening at 11:30 to allow plenty of time for chit-chat. In case you’re wondering “who the heck are these guys?” allow me to fill you in.

Curt Schilling is the founder and chairman of 38 Studios, the company developing Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. He was also a major-league baseball pitcher and a World Series champion three times over, so any baseball fans out there can get a twofer.

Todd McFarlane is a renowned comic book author and creator of the Spawn comic series, as well as the founder of McFarlane Toys. He also oversees all the artwork for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

R.A. Salvatore, a New York Times best-selling author 24-times over and acclaimed writer of the Forgotten Realms series. Salvatore is, of course, responsible for writing the rich lore of Amalur.

Ken Rolston was the lead designer for both The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and serves as the Executive Designer for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

Rumors Say The Next Xbox Will Play Blu-rays, But Not Used Games

We just heard about Kingdom of Amalur‘s online pass content, and have been hearing about online passes for years now. People are pretty not-down with online passes, but the industry has a bone to pick with used games and Microsoft may have a strategy which, if successful, will reduce the used game industry to nothing but, well, bones. According to Kotaku, the next generation Xbox might be implementing a system which prevents used games from being played. Now what this means is rather specifically unstated, whomever informed Kotaku doesn’t know how Microsoft plans to do it. However, we do know what it means if they do implement it, sadness. Or at least that’s the immediate reaction. Let’s explore something here.

Most people were pretty shell shocked holiday 2011 with the impressive lineup of AAA titles being released from September to December, and we eventually realized one thing: we can’t buy them all. Not without selling organs, and even then some people probably had to take other people’s organs if they wanted all that the holidays had to offer. However, this crazy lineup of full price games didn’t stay full price for long, Need for Speed: The Run, Assassin’s Creed Revelations, and many other AAA games went on sale rather soon after their release because they had to compete.

Now, imagine that there was no way to buy those games used. Well now people are really pinching pennies (which is very rude to penny-kind, by the way) and only buying the games they really, really want and sometimes having to avoid even those games for a time. There’s no “I’ll buy this one now, and get the other one used later”, because there will be no used! So instead the logic might follow, “I’ll have to wait until they both drop in price”, and when an entire group of consumers thinks that way, prices will start dropping. At least in theory. Also it’ll mean the end to online passes because there would be no point. Scary as this all sounds, it’s important to consider that while the industry will (hopefully) be making all their intended revenue, there’s give-and-take and when gamers and non-gamers alike can’t afford games like they used to, the industry will have to respond.

Beyond that controversial bit, included in the rumors was the fact that the Xbox 360 will play Blu-rays, a noticeable 15 – 35gb size limit increase over that of DVDs. Yay, Blu-rays, higher graphical quality, Blu-ray movies, and… oh wait, remember what happened with the PS3 and backwards compatibility? Uh oh. Well let’s hope that plays out favorably. I didn’t pay $600 for a console six years ago and I won’t do it two years from now. I’ll just duct tape my 360 to my 720 or whatever the new console will be calling itself. I’m thinking… the Ybox. Or the Wbox, depending on the perspective.

Lastly, there are apparently features planned for the new Xbox which will better accommodate the Kinect and allow it to detect users more accurately. There’s a rather good chance the new device, if there is one, will be called “Kinect Movement Extra” and will be a small cube rammed somewhere into existing Kinects. All of this is speculation, but along with the recent news of the possibly super amazing graphics, the next Xbox may be able to land at a late 2013 release.

GameStop Offering PokéPark 2 Preorder Bonus

GameStop will be offering a preorder bonus for PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond for the Wii. The preorder bonus is a set of four Wii Remote Controller Static Clings. Each Static Cling will feature a Pokémon, Pikachu, Oshawott, Snivy, and Tepig.

PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond is set to release on February 27th, 2012.

Soulcalibur V Has Gone Gold

With still little less than a month away from its release date, Soulcalibur V has gone gold.

Set 17 years after its predecessor, Soulcalibur V and follows Sophitia’s son Patroklos and daughter Pyrrha. The game is to feature improved character customization, the new Brave Edge and Critical Edge gameplay mechanics, and Assassin’s Creed‘s Ezio Auditore de Firenze as a playable character.

A Collector’s Edition of the game is set to ship with the original retail version. It includes the original soundtrack, a making-of DVD, an art book, and DLC cards for the Dark Knight and White Knight armor sets for all your character creation needs.

If you happen to preorder the game, the preorder exclusives vary for each retailer. The GameStop and EB Games Canada exclusive is the Ivy Valentine bobble head, although supplies are limited so get your tiggle-bitty head-bobbing toy while its hot. The Best Buy exclusive (for U.S. and Canada only) is a downloadable code for Dampierre. Future Shop and Walmart both will give you a laser art cell, although in order to get the laser art cell, you have to pick up your copy at a Walmart within the first 24-hours of release. Given the choice, I’d probably opt for the Ivy bobble head… because how awesome is that?

Mass Effect 3 Pre-order Bonuses Revealed in New Videos, Screens

EA and Bioware have released new videos, screens that reveal Mass Effect 3 pre-order goodies. The M55 Argus Assault Rifle will be available free if you pre-order the game anywhere. A reservation at GameStop will also include N7 Warfare Gear. Reserving from Origin will net you an an AT12 Raider Shotgun.

The Last Guardian is Not Canceled. Gamestop Screws Up, World Flips Shit

Oh, Gamestop. When you fuck up, you fuck up with flying colors. First, there was the Deus Ex fiasco, where they took codes from the PC version of the game. Now, you have insulted The Last Guardian!

Anyone who pre-ordered the game yesterday received a call saying that the retailer was taking the game off their computers, and naturally, everyone took it as a sign of the game being canceled. Sony said that the game’s cancellation was “not true” in any way whatsoever. Here’s why Last Guardian was removed from Gamestop’s computer:

“The Last Guardian has not been cancelled by Sony as we incorrectly stated in an automated call to reservation customers. Because the game did not have a specific release date, GameStop made the decision to remove the game from our system. The Last Guardian will be reinstated for pre-order when a firm launch date is known.”

Way to go, Gamestop. You really know how to work people into a frenzy. Next time, maybe explain why you’re removing a game from your computer.

New Kid Icarus, Pokémon, Rhythm Heaven and Mario Party Games Are on the Way

REDMOND, Wash., Dec. 13, 2011 – As some people hunker down for a long winter’s nap, Nintendo is getting things fired up. The first quarter of 2012 offers great new installments in popular franchises for both the Nintendo 3DS™ system and the Wii™ console. On the Nintendo 3DS system, Capcom’s Resident Evil® Revelations launches on Feb. 7. In a new chapter of the hit survival-horror franchise, players fight a new enemy and virus in 3D without the need for special glasses. Hey, There’s Finally a RAGE Demo Out on Xbox Live! (PSN Coming Soon)

Oh RAGE. So beautiful, so bloody, so much better on Xbox 360 than any other platform…

Speaking of RAGE’s premier platform, there’s finally a demo available for id’s latest shooter on Xbox Live.

So, if you were on the fence about the game before, now would be the perfect time to check it out.

The demo will let you take on one mission and mess around in the hub town of Wellspring a bit:

The Ghost Clan, a cult of murderous fanatics, has infiltrated the waterworks beneath the town of Wellspring with plans to poison the water supply. You are the only one with the weapons, talent and courage to stop them. While in Wellspring, you can also meet the townsfolk, try your hand in games of skill and chance, peruse the wares of the local vendors or hit the Speedway for some racing.

The game is also getting a Black Friday sale price of $29.99 at GameStop and select retailers.

Oh, in case you were wondering, the PSN demo is coming on December 6th.

New Zelda Themed 3DS Headed To The USA

The new Zelda themed Nintendo 3DS is indeed coming to the USA! A recent leaked Black Friday GameStop flyer has this sweet 3DS hardware, which comes bundled with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, listed at a price of $199.99 USD. No word yet if this is indeed a GameStop exclusive or if it will be seen in Canada or not.

My gut tells me fans can expect to see this awesome 3DS at various retailers throughout North America for a limited time. Though remember that isn’t confirmed.

GameStop Reveals Super Mario 3D Land Pre-Order Bonus

GameStop.com has just revealed that there will be a pre-order bonus for Super Mario 3D Land. The bonus, which will be available online and in stores, is a Tanooki Mario Keychain. No pictures are currently available of the keychain. I can’t wait to get one though!

PC Version of Deus Ex + Gamestop = $50 Gift Card

When Deus Ex: Human Revolution launched this past Tuesday, no one was expecting that Gamestop would open up PC copies and pull out the codes from OnLive, or send the PC copies back to Square. When the news hit, Twitter and gaming forums were blowing up against Gamestop. Not that you can entirely blame them, because it’s technically stealing.

Joystiq is now reporting that anyone who bought the PC version of the game is eligible for a $50 Gamestop card, along with a “Buy 2 Get 1 free” coupon for used game purchases. Gamestop CEO Paul Raines also sent Joystiq this email:

“Earlier this week, GameStop removed a competitor’s coupon from standard edition PC versions of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, a recent release by Square Enix. We were not aware that the product box would contain this competitor’s offer. We regret the events surrounding this title release and that our customers were put in the middle of this issue between GameStop and Square Enix, the publisher of this game. And for this, we are truly sorry.

For your inconvenience, we would like to offer you a free $50 GameStop gift card and a Buy 2 Get 1 Free pre-owned purchase. We want to earn back your trust and confidence in the GameStop experience. Please bring in this email and your store receipt or order confirmation from GameStop.com and present it to a Game Advisor.”

Gamestop Reveals Assassin’s Creed Revelations Ultimate Bundle

After the fiasco of Gamestop removing Deus Ex promotional codes from new copies of the PC version, we have a bit of good news concerning Gamestop. The company has listed the Assassin’s Creed Revelations Ultimate Bundle. Priced at $99.99, the bundle includes:

Gamestop Stops Selling PC Version of Deus Ex After OnLive Fiasco

Earlier today we reported that GameStop had been physically removing OnLive cloud coupons from PC versions of Deus Ex Human Revolution.

Well , apparently GameStop is so pissed about their competition having coupons in their stock of the game that they are now refusing to sell the PC version of the game at all and are having them recalled to Square Enix.

GameStop is Opening New Copies of Deus Ex to Remove OnLive Coupons

If you purchased the PC version of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, you were entitled to a free copy of the game through OnLive. If you purchased the game through GameStop however, chances are you didn’t get one.

According to GameSpy, GameStop employees are receiving notices to physically open and remove the download token from the PC version of the game.

GameStop doesn’t care either as they confirmed they were removing the tokens by saying. “Square Enix packed the competitor’s coupon with our DXHR product without our prior knowledge and we did pull and discard these coupons.” If you plan on buying copy of the game through GameStop, be sure to check the game and make sure it isn’t open. If so, I would demand a sealed copy of the game.

Gamestop Testing New Console Game Streaming Service

We did know that it would happen soon enough. With the advent of cloud based gaming, it is now possible to play games from your couch; games that you don’t even physically own or have installed. No, these games aren’t just floating in the ether, they are stored on remote servers called “clouds” that allow you to play any game you desire, and all you require is a constant internet connection.

Game giant and all consuming black hole of the game industry GameStop, has announced that it is currently beta testing to bring streaming Xbox 360 and PS3 games to the masses, Gameindustry reports. The full service is predicted to roll out for all consumers mid-2012.

This announcement is likely due to the fact that GameStop acquired Spawn Labs and Impulse, two components that allow for such a feature. The company is also reportedly working on PC streaming as well and that may hit sooner rather than later, as competitors OnLive and Gaikai have worked out most of the kinks.

This raises a few questions in my mind about the ownership of said products. If I pay full price for a game that I only have on a cloud, do I ever really own it? The answer is most likely no and if it’s becomes a subscription-based service the answer is hell no. Besides, the need for streaming games on PCs is common as not all PCs have the same specifications and may have trouble having to actually run a game; a console has no such problem so I don’t understand why this is a necessity.

Then I remember that this is America, and that’s just the way we do things. We should probably stop eating Big Macs and go out and buy our products like everyone else.

Gamestop to Start Selling PC Codes at Retail Stores

To expand its PC strategy, giant retailer Gamestop is going to be allowing their customers to purchase digital PC downloads at their stores. And, you can even put trade credit toward those new games.

The service will begin August 23, the same day as a little game called Deus Ex: Human Revolution comes out. If you purchase the game ahead of time, you’ll get a crap load of bonuses. Said bonuses include the Game of the Year edition of the original Deus Ex and Invisible War for the PC; the Explosive Mission DLC pack; and double points for the store’s PowerUp Rewards program. Whether or not this ends up succeeding in long run remains to be seen, but the question is, will you PC people try it out?

Saints Row Special Edition 2-Pack Outed By Gamestop

Gamestop has listed a new special edition “2-Pack” version of Saints Row. The Saints Row Double Pack was recently released back in September 2010, which contained both Saints Row, and Saints Row 2 which currently sits at $29.99.

The Saints Row Special Edition 2-Pack suggested to be released on August 1st, with a MSRP of $19.99 for Xbox 360. No other information is currently available on the product or what it contains. With the listing only being for Xbox 360 and the original Saints Row being exclusive, we’re willing to bet it’s both Saints Row 1 & 2 re-released for a cheaper price.
