Asura’s Wrath Launch Trailer is Brutal and Bad-ass! Kratos Who?

Kratos who? Asura’s Wrath has garnered many comparison’s to Sony’s God of War and for good reason. Both are action adventure games featuring demigods who were betrayed and seek vengeance on the gods.

CyberConnect2 and Capcom think they’ve got a winner on their hands. After watching this trailer and following the development of this game I can’t deny that it doesn’t look bad-ass. Does it have what it takes to dethrone the God of War? We shall see when the game releases next month. In the meantime, watch the launch trailer below.

Asura’s Wrath is unleashed February 21 in the US and February 24 in Europe for the PS3 and 360.

Is God of War IV Coming Next September?

Sony’s epic Greek murderfest trilogy God of War concluded last year. Since then, the team over at Sony Santa Monica has kept things pretty hush-hush. Over the past few days, rumors about their next title being a fourth God of War have surfaced. Naturally, Sony hasn’t commented, but this recent rumor adds fuel to the fire. MightyApe, a New Zealand retailer, has God of War IV pegged for a release date of September 28, 2012.

If God of War IV does exist, I bet it’ll probably have some sort of dancing. Maybe that’s why we didn’t see Kratos’ body after the credits in God of War III. Because he went to the club to dance.

Sony Job Listing Suggests That The Next God of War is In Development

It’s been a while since God of War III, and by that I mean that it’s been more than a year and a half since the last title from the successful God of War IP was released. In the entertainment industry, that’s about ripe time to squeeze out some hype for another sequel while the IP is fresh in recent memory.

A job listing by God of War developer Sony Santa Monica Studios for a senior staff concept artist for a project titled “God of War” suggests that development is indeed underway for the God of War III sequel.

God of War: Master Collection Listed by Amazon Germany

Amazon Germany has listed a God of War: Master Collection for the PlayStation 3. According to the listing this the Master Collection will include every God of War game to date (GoW 1, 2 & 3 and the PSP games Chains of Olympus and Ghosts of Sparta). Essentially a combination of the God of War Collection and the upcoming God of War Collection Volume 2.

The listing is simple and does not include a picture but does have a date – September 16th. We’ll keep you updated as new information comes in.

God of War Portable Collection Coming to PS3 in July?

If you’re a fan of the God of War titles on the Playstation Portable, you will soon be able to enjoy them in HD and on the Playstation 3.

Well that’s if a rumor based out of Sony Computer Entertainment Taiwan is to believed. The bundled games would be remastered in high definition and feature enhanced graphics for the vastly more powerful Playstation 3.

If the collection is in fact legitimate, you can look out for it on July 7th, 2011.

Cosplay Spotlight: Kratos (God of Mortal Kombat)

Thanks to the many years I spent studying Spanish (and then forgetting it), I was able to determine that this cosplay was, in fact, the real deal. Behold, the might and fury of Kratos. He slices. He dices. He dares to challenge the gods in the name of sweet vengeance. Better yet, if you’ve gotten your hands on the PS3 version of Mortal Kombat today, you may have noticed this hulking antihero invading your challenge ladder. Although he may not have looked as lifelike as this!

I am scared of this face.

Brazil’s Lexedur hath brought us Kratos, clad in Ares armor. The make-up and detailing here are jaw-droppingly good. Lexedur also knows how to convey pretty convincing rage. The picture above chills me to the bone and assures me that as long as I never meet Kratos in real life, I will probably live to a ripe old age.

These few photos I’ve found have been wonderful. I don’t often see cosplayers don armor – most opt to bathe in body paint and flex for the camera. However, this doesn’t always end in success. Frankly, I’d rather see armor like this displayed in all its Grecian glory. Lexedur does not disappoint and also manages to pull off the bald look quite well.

These new additions will be available in major retailers in the United States and Canada for $29.99, and for that price these games are well worth the price of admission. Get out there and start buying games!

Mortal Kombat – Extended Kratos Trailer, Kollector’s Edition Announced

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today released a special extended trailer for Mortal Kombat, featuring more Kratos. Kratos will only be available for the PS3 edition (sorry Xbox only gamers).

Launching in April 2011 both a Standard Edition and Kollector’s Edition of Mortal Kombat will be available.

No details on what will be included in this Kollector’s edition (yes, in the press release they spelled it with a K).

Mortal Kombat – Kratos Reveal Trailer

Rumored earlier this week, Kratos is set to join the Mortal Kombat cast as an exclusive secret character to the PS3.

The rumor is true and a full trailer for the game has been released, showing up Kratos getting ready to fuck the whole MK gang up.

PS3 Mortal Kombat Will Have Kratos With Ass Kicking Fatalities

PlayStation 3 owners who buy the next Mortal Kombat are in for a treat as the God of War himself joins the fight with his own fatalities.

Thanks to the January issue of the Official Playstation Magazine, we’ve learned Kratos will be a fully featured character with Kombat moves, fatalities and his very own themed kombat arena. Unfortunately, we’ve also learned he won’t be playable in story mode. But then again, when did Kratos even need a story besides killing everyone/thing in his path.

Outworlders and Earth fighters beware.

I’m a big Kratos fan. In fact, God of War 3 was one of the main reasons I bought a PS3. One of the great things about Kratos is he will “bring it” on the small screen just as hard as he will on a console.

Unfortunately my PSP broke a year ago. Oh well, might have to buy one again to play this awesome game!

You’ll also get a metric ton of bonuses if you pre-order the game as well; you’ll get a soundtrack, PSP & PS3 themes, a Kratos avatar for PSN, a Legionnaire Skin for Ghost of Sparta, and a Game Directors Documentary, which is a discussion between devs that have worked on the God of War franchise- devs like David Jaffe, Cory Barlog, and Dan Jan. New Ghost of Sparta Footage is Gaming ALL CAPS

If there is one thing we can be sure of, it’s that Kratos sure doesn’t mess around when it comes to ass-kicking. In this new clip from Ready at Dawn’s newest PSP God of War title, Kratos starts his own personal class war by beating King Midas until everything he touches turns to pain. Instead of gold, you see. Because everything Midas touches is gold and stuff.

This scene also shows off a more immersive “in your face” battle with up-close and personal brutality.

Personal brutality is definitely the best kind of brutality. So far, Ghost of Sparta is looking pretty impressive. It is nice to see the graphics of the PSP still being pushed a little bit further so far into its run. Plus, God of War, come on, of course it’s going to be fun. It’s the gaming equivalent of typing in all caps, except it might actually be cruise control to cool.

Ready at Dawn Studios Joins the Layoff Parade

Today is not a particularly good day to be a game developer. Following shortly after the surprising news that Rockstar San Diego laid off 40 employees despite the success of Red Dead Redemption, Ready at Dawn Studios announced that they had to release 13 of their own.

From Ready at Dawn’s website;

We’ve spent the majority of our time at RAD hiring the best and most talented people to join our team. Today, we had to let go of 13 of these people because we simply couldn’t keep them on board while one project finishes and another ramps up. Unfortunately, these are the woes of being independent… It sucks. There are no other words for it.

The studio, best known for the PSP’s God of War: Chains of Olympus, are currently working on Ghost of Sparta- another game in the ever popular God of War mythos. It’s a shame when things like this happen, especially to successful independent developers, but it is sadly common place since we live in a world that is being choked of any joy or value by the never yielding hand of corruption and oppression masquerading under the name of capitalism until we’re all blue faced and gasping for air, begging our wealthy overlords for mercy. Wait, what was I talking about again? I’m not posting on Raisethefist right now? Whoops.

Gaming Dilemma: Why Re-Make When You Can Just Make?

The online marketplaces of XBLA, PSN, and WiiWare have been a great place for gamers and developers alike. We’re seeing more small (and large) developers than ever before pushing out great games for these platforms, and the market for them can only get bigger. We’re seeing more original game concepts than ever before on these platforms, alongside a collection of classic games.

The current generation of consoles seems to be a perfect place for development teams to test news ideas, push out interesting concepts, or just work on short, well designed games. Think about games like Braid, Flower, Cave Story, or World of Goo. These games were released to great critical acclaim, and featured great, original concepts which were very well executed.

However, these markets, along with the DS, seem to have promoted quite a few remakes of old games. It’s not just the new markets that we see remakes for, but they are what prompted me to write this article. The classic games available on the virtual marketplaces (i.e. the Virtual Console) have been great, but full remakes of games have started to pop up everywhere. Perfect Dark was remade for XBLA, along with Earthworm Jim. The first two Monkey Island games have been updated for most platforms, as well as the original Prince of Persia. Boy and His Blob was even remade for Wii.

I see this as a problem. Not because these are not great games, or indeed great remakes. The remakes of Monkey Island, for example, were very good indeed. In fact, I enjoy playing these remade games a great deal. The problem, I feel, is that they represent a wasted opportunity.

The teams working on these games clearly have a lot of really good developers working on them. The quality of the remakes is testament to that in many examples. Why then are these people not creating new and innovative games? I realise that games are made to make money, but that doesn’t mean that new games don’t sell. If, for example, the development team that created the brilliant remake of Super Street Fighter II Turbo had been put on to a team to create a completely new 2D fighter, I feel that the quality would be high enough for the game to sell perfectly well. We’d also have a brand new fighting game to sink our teeth into, and new players would have a great place to start.

Even Nintendo are guilty. In fact, they might be the worst offenders. We’ve already seen two remakes for a platform that has not even been released yet- Star Fox 3DS and Ocarina of Time 3DS. Don’t get me wrong, I will buy and love these games, but I still feel like the development teams on these games ought to be spent on creating new games with new characters, or even just new games in a series. Just think- we could have had a new 3DS Zelda game (or indeed a new IP). Obviously a remake is much easier to do than a brand new game, but as I have said- the potential to create new rather than old is there.

Although there are a lot of good remakes, sometimes they just cannot capture the magic of the original. Perfect Dark, Earthworm Jim and Vigilante 8 were all great games. When released, they were some of the best games that one could ever play. Now, though, they are not. They have all had remakes, and they seem antiquated and just do not play well. That’s because these old games were not designed as well as games are now. They were good when they were the best available, but game design has advanced so much since then that they end up being purely nostalgia trips. That’s fine for some- but again, the resources pumped into those remakes could have been put into something much more interesting and well designed.

Games remain an artifact of their time. This is why I am skeptical of the new GoldenEye game for Wii, for example. Although going back to GoldenEye on N64 is a nice little nostalgia trip, one can tell straight away that it is just not a good game by today’s standards. For PC gamers, it wasn’t even close to being the best shooter, but for console players it was the messiah needed to push the genre onto their platform- and with four people playing, it was an absolute blast. Imagine playing a brand new game, with a great multiplayer component and great level design- one designed not for online play, but for you and your mates. Why must that game be trying to be GoldenEye? Well, because it sells units- and it will be of a lesser quality as a result, because they’ve got the name, and don’t need the review scores.

Think about the God of War Collection for PS3, as well as the upcoming Sly Raccoon collection. There are development teams that have spent a lot of time converting these games to the new platform. Once again, why couldn’t these teams be creating a brand new game instead of making some not-even-old games HD? God of War II is only three years old- no matter how good, it just doesn’t need a remake.

Obviously they did a great job, and have created a new audience as well as allowed people who might not have had a PS2 to play these games, but the time used to make these things happen could have been used to begin on a new game that will create an even bigger audience. Perhaps they could have even spent more time on God of War III, or InFamous, to make them even better. Perhaps the funds that went into updating the old games could have gone into marketing the new games better. In a way, a really good remake is even worse; when it’s obvious there was a lot of love in a remake, it just makes me feel bad that that love could have gone into a brand new game.

I’d like to reiterate just once more that I have played and loved a good number of remakes. In fact, almost every time Nintendo remakes one of their old games, I’m straight on them. However, as I play, the childlike glee that happens on the outside is undercut by a feeling that had the development time gone into something new, I could have eaten my cake and had it too. I could have been playing Mario 64 on my N64, and had a new Mario game to play on the DS. I could have been playing Pokémon Red on my Game Boy, and had a new Pokémon game to play on the GBA. I could even have been playing Monkey Island on the PC, and had a new 2D adventure game to sink my teeth into.
