Good Old Games has added two classic titles to their collection in Hitman: Codename 47 ($9.99) and Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition ($5.99), so if you haven’t played either and are looking for an inexpensive weekend play, you may want to check them out.

Worms is back as Team 17 Joins GOG.com

It’s return of the silly voices today as Team 17 brings the original Worms to computers across the land, launching on GOG.com.

Team 17 Software is best known as the developer of the superb Worms series, and the first game they’re bringing out for purchase- DRM free and fit for running on a modern PC- is Worms United, the “first installment in Worms series along with the expansion pack Worms Reinforcements, adding extra elements like a single-player campaign and the ability to add custom levels and soundpacks.”

The developer is also releasing its most recent franchise, Alien Breed, on the service, as well as oldies Superfrog and World Rally Fever later this month.

It’s good to see the return of the original Worms. Admittedly the Worms 2-style games were better but there’s something brilliantly simple that makes Worms 1 so fun to play with mates. Get them all around the computer and learn your wind speeds, soldiers!

Broken Sword Free for 48 Hours at GOG.com

The much loved GOG.com is celebrating six million unique game downloads by making the superb Broken Sword free for two whole days.

Thanks to its creator Sir Charles Cecil of Revolution Software, Broken Sword: Shadow of The Templars Director’s Cut will be available for download for 48 hours on GOG.com.

Research Shows PC Game Sales Will Eclipse Console Game Sales by 2014

’tis a proud day for the glorious PC gaming master race.

A few weeks ago I sat down with Nvidia up in LA for a lovely presentation about their upcoming products and the state of 3DPC gaming.

During said presentation I was showed a series of rather informative slides, one of which stood out far more than others:

That’s right, their research shows that PC game software sales will eclipse console game software sales by 2014!

I know what you’re thinking. “Madness! How can that be possible!? Nobody buys PC games anymore, they hardly even sell them in stores!”

Well, you’re absolutely right.

As you may have guessed, the rise in PC game sales is due to the ever expanding number of digital mediums which make it possible to not only purchase, but spend money in PC games.

As you can see, the majority of PC game sales are not packaged at all, they’re mostly digital. Moreover, the forms of digital distribution and sales associated with them are growing exponentially each and every day.

You may be familiar with rapidly growing digital distribution channels such as Steam, Direct2Drive and GoG that sell full games both new and old directly to players over the internet. However, let’s not forget the other ways in which gamers spend money on PC games.

World of Warcraft, which is run as a monthly subscription based MMO, racks up sales in the billions each and every year due to it’s tremendous player base:

And WoW is certainly not the only subscription based MMO out there. New MMO’s like TERA, Guild Wars 2, and The Old Republic are still on the horizon, and they too will contribute to the growth of PC game sales.

However, there’s still more. High profile Free-To-Play games such as League of Legends, World of Tanks and the upcoming Tribes: Ascend have their own business models which allow players to play the game for free, but spend money on in-game features and items to enhance their experience. Gamers spend millions on these “mico-transactions” each and every year.

Let’s also not forget the thousands of free to play Korean MMO’s you’ve never heard of and browser and Facebook based mobile and social games such as Farmville and Mafia Wars that rake in billions a year for companies like Zynga.

So, by all means it appears that PC gaming is not dead. Not because Razer wants to sell you a $3000 laptop, but because there are more ways than ever for gamers to spend money and play games on any type of PC, anywhere in the world.

Is this trend going to slow down anytime soon? We don’t think so.

XIII Released On GoG.com – Go Buy It Now

XIII, one of the best first-person shooters ever made, has finally been made available for digital download on GoG.com.

It’s got Adam West in it. Need I say more?

Fuck it, I will. XIII is based on a Belgian comic strip of the same name (hence the brilliant cel-shaded graphics) and as such the story is absolutely fantastic. It’s such a shame this game has been lost under a pile of crap Call of Duty clones, as it really should go down in history with the likes of Bioshock and Half-Life. A bold claim, I know, but XIII really is worth buying.

I’ve been looking for this on a digital download service for years, so congratulations to GoG.com for making it happen (and with no DRM). Now go buy it- you won’t regret it.

Editor’s note: Seriously, if for some reason you get XIII and don’t like it, I will pay you your money back.

Dressed as monks and streaming live from a monastery, GoG (Good Old Games) has announced to the world that they have sinned!! But shall be redeemed when GoG relaunches tomorrow!!

Call it a PR stunt, call it a mistake, call it a great success, call it what you will, none of that matters now. After briefly taking their site down to much speculation for the better part of this week, GoG.com is back and appears to be out of beta and better than ever. In a streaming press conference today attended by over 600 gamers, journalists and fanboys alike, the GoG monks outlined the features of their new and improved site. A few hours later, they came out of their robes and released this series of videos detailing the new features and design. Enjoy:

So let’s recap:

- Re-written 98% of the source code (This will enable handling of 6x as much traffic and have the site run 10x faster)

- GoG has not been bought out

- Still NO DRM (Hooray)

- New homepage with simple 3 click registration for new users

- New customizable catalogue

- Huge community aspect featuring user created GoGMixes (User created game lists) A ratings system and hot topics on huge forums

- Facebook integration (They referred to Facebook as the biggest monastery out there)

- Each game will come with free goodies such as avatars, wallpapers, manuals and more!

- All games now FULLY COMPATIBLE WITH WINDOWS 7

- Baldur’s Gate Collector’s Edition will be available for $9.99 with a ton of goodies

Official Statement on GOG.com Closure Coming Wednesday

The staff at the recently shut down GOG.com have posted an update to the website, adding a few more details about the closure as well as the notification that the full official statement will be coming on Wednesday.

The update reads:

UPDATE 20.09.2010
First of all, we apologize everyone for the whole situation and closing GOG.com. We do understand the timing for taking down the site caused confusion and many users didn’t manage to download all their games. Unfortunately we had to close the service due to business and technical reasons.

At the same time we guarantee that every user who bought any game on GOG.com will be able to download all their games with bonus materials, DRM-free and as many times as they need starting this Thursday.

The official statement from GOG.com’s management concerning the ongoing events is planned on Wednesday. If you want to receive further information about GOG.com, please send an email to update_media@gog.com if you’re a media representative or to update_users@gog.com if you’re a user without a GOG account.

There are plenty of rumours flying about concerning the state of GOG.com, but make sure to check back on Wednesday to find out exactly what has happened to the formerly beloved site.

GOG.com Announces Surprise Closure

In a shock move this weekend the excellent and charming Good Old Games, or GOG.com, has shut down, leaving only a message from the site’s team on the homepage.

The message reads as follows.

Dear GOG users,

We have recently had to give serious thought to whether we could really keep GOG.com the way it is. We’ve debated on it for quite some time and, unfortunately, we’ve decided that GOG.com simply cannot remain in its current form.

We’re very grateful for all support we’ve received from all of you in the past two years. Working on GOG.com was a great adventure for all of us and an unforgettable journey to the past, through the long and wonderful history of PC gaming.

This doesn’t mean the idea behind GOG.com is gone forever. We’re closing down the service and putting this era behind us as new challenges await.

On a technical note, this week we’ll put in place a solution to allow everyone to re-download their games. Stay tuned to this page and follow us on Twitter and Facebook for updates.

GoG.com Cuts Price of Oddworld Games (Forever)

Good Old Games have announced the permanent price drop of two excellent old game today: Oddworld: Abes Oddysee and Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus.

Fans of puzzle platformers old and new are sure to enjoy these games- not only are they great fun to play, but they’re full of humour and character as well. Both games have been marked down from $9.99 to $5.99. Since they’re from GoG.com, they’re DRM-free and will run on modern systems without any trouble.
