For the number junkies out there in cyberspace, SCEE’s PlayStation Day is pumping out sales numbers like Mardi Gras beads, and you don’t even have to take off your shirt to get your hands on em. (I suppose you could, if that’s your thing.)

SCEE chief David Reeves said Sony Europe has sold 12 million PSPs, 5 million PS3s and a solid 48 million PS2s. Now, if that isn’t a pretty solid user base I don’t know what is.

Reeves also went on to point out that Sony has been outselling their closest competitor (the Xbox 360, the Wii is still in a solid first place) consistently since October. He even added that the PS3 has sold more units than the Xbox 360 in Europe to date, despite Microsoft’s 18 month advantage. Not bad for Sony’s big black beast.

Sony Computer Entertainment president Kaz Hirai has been kind enough to show off Sony’s world-wide sales figures. A respectable 10.5 million PS3s, 34 million PSPs and a whopping 127 million PS2s had been sold upto the end of 2007.

And look at this, even more numbers! This day just keeps getting… numberier. Reeves talks more European numbers, revealing that Gran Turismo 5: Prologue has sold 1.5 million copies, EyeToy has sold 6.7 million, SingStar is rocking 12 million copies, and Buzz has sold 6 million copies. Who bought 6 million copies of Buzz? I have no idea. But there you have it. Straight from the horse’s mouth. Well, SCEE chief’s mouth actually, but you get the idea.

After the successful launch of the new Playstation Store, there’s a feast of content to get your teeth into this week.

The Metal Gear Online Beta makes its presence known on the European Store, but will be hidden in the US for those that were lucky enough to acquire a Beta code. Then again, don’t be too excited since many are having trouble setting up their Konami Game ID’s.

With Gran Turismo 5: Prologue and the Warhawk Pack to tide us over until the MGO Beta’s April 21st launch, it’ll be easy for us to forget about the content we might have been expecting. Yes, the Resistance 2 trailer won’t be gracing your PS3 this week, but we hope it jumps onto the Store in the near future.

Polyphony Digital have pulled it out of the bag again. We were expecting a few more cars and perhaps a new track for the North American (and hopefully European) release of Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, but there’s quite a lot more content than we were expecting.

A series track favourite is back, a huge list of new cars and 2 player split screen all headline in what was once called a “glorified demo.”

Oh yes. We didn’t think it would be possible to render GT5:P twice on the PS3 (a feat that Motorstorm couldn’t reach at launch) but Polyphony Digital are wizards of game development.

Headlining the roster of over 70 vehicles and 14 additional tuned cars is the Ferrari 599, the Nissan GT-R and the Audi R8 4.2 FSI R Tronic. The game will include the 5 previous tracks found in the Japanese version, along with an old Gran Turismo classic – the High Speed Ring. There’s plenty to keep you occupied with each track having 2 layouts, whether reversed, shortened, or extended.

Moreover, additional features will be available to North American consumers, including a Drift Mode, Car Tuning, two-player split screen racing and a new set of offline and online Race Events.

Drift Mode – The player’s drifting technique is measured based on drift angles, racing lines, and speeds within evaluation zones located at various turns on the course.
In Depth Car Tuning – Players have the ability to adjust the vehicle’s performance, including power, weight, tires and suspension.
Two-player Split Screen Racing - Allows players to race head-to-head against friends and foes offline.

It’s now safe to say to say that Gran Turismo 5: Prologue is not a demo. Here’s the full vehicle roster:

Sony Computer Entertainment of Europe has confirmed that two different PS3 bundles are going to making their way into Europe. Both are going to be the 40GB SKU with a Sixaxis One. One contains Gran Turismo 5: Prologue and the other (initially only available to the French) packs 3 Blu-Rays: 300, Casino Royale, and Spiderman 3.

The Blu-Ray bundle may later expand to Spain/Italy. Both sets are due for a March 28th release.

I say Europeans are only semi-lucky because both bundles are priced at €399. What do you have to show for this price? No backwards compatibility and a Sixaxis (instead of a DualShock 3).

Although I applaud Sony for trying to add value, they could’ve at least included software backwards compatibility and a DualShock 3, which will more or less render the Sixaxis obsolete. Unless you enjoy a lack of rumble, that is.

At least some good comes of this. For you car-heads across the pond, this confirms a March 28th release of GT5: P, if not sooner.

Although, given the choice. I’d still go for that just announced snazzy MGS4PS3, partly because I love acronyms.
