First Set of Gran Turismo 5 DLC Priced and Dated

The official Gran Turismo website has revealed the first set of DLC for Gran Turismo 5. The DLC consist of 4 different packs, all with a release date of October 18th. Below is a list of all 4 packs, price and what they include. Alternatively, you can purchase the complete pack which contains all 4, for $11.99.

Course Pack (2 Tracks, 5 Layours) – $4.99
The new Course Pack includes SPA-Francorchamps (with weather effects) and Kart Space layouts I and II (each layout supports normal and reverse).
Racing Car Pack (15 Cars) – $7.99
Includes the new model of the X2010 ultimate racing machine, the Red Bull X2011. There is also a lineup of specially tuned touring cars and three new racing karts. Expand your garage with these exciting new racing machines!
Racing Gear Pack (90 Items) – $2.99
Contains helmets and racing suits of 8 famous WRC and NASCAR drivers, 12 helmets and suits in all. In addition there is the Official Gran Turismo helmet, and new gear from Alpinestars and Simpson.

Gran Turismo 5 Spec 2.0 Update Coming in Oct, DLC a Week Later

With the upcoming release of longtime rival Forza Motorsport 4 , Gran Turismo fans expected a reaponse and they got one. Series producer Kazunori Yamauchi announced Gran Turismo 5 Spec 2.0 via Twitter:

“GT fans, thanks for waiting… The GT5 Spec 2.0 update is coming the 3rd week of October, with DLC following a week later.”

No additional info out of Polyphony Digital yet as to what the Spec 2.0 Update or DLC will include but it’s just the kind of news fans have been waiting for.

Former F1 Driver Beats GT5 Players on Top Gear Test Track

David Coulthard took on a handful of Gran Turismo 5 players on the Top Gear test track this week, beating all comers.

Driving a (6.3 litre V8) Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, the former Formula 1 driver set a blistering 1’16.32 time around Dunsfold Park in Surrey, England. Fans of the show will know this is a fantastic time, beating the Stig’s 1’16.5 set in a Lamborghini Aventador.

Jason Birt, a seriously good Gran Turismo 5 player, managed a 1’16.868 on the virtual track, just half a second off the real-life time. He said:

I only got the call on Thursday to say that I was taking part and so I am really happy to have won the virtual race and be going to Brazil. Shame I didn’t get to beat DC, but he is a real pro and it would have been quite a feat to beat him. A massive thank you to Mercedes-Benz and PlayStation for making this happen.

You can join in the fun on your own PS3, too, by having a go at the special event “Mercedes-Benz Driving Event” like nearly 80,000 people have already done.

Former F1 Driver to Take on GT5 Players in Real-Life Race

Former Formula One driver David Coulthard will be taking on players of Gran Turismo 5 on a time trial run on Monday.

The Scottish driver and commentator will drive a real Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG around a “secret” test track, while six of the UK’s best Gran Turismo 5 players will take him on on a virtual version of the track at Mercedes-Benz World.

The race takes place live at 3pm UK time on Monday 5 September, watchable here. GT5 players around the world will be able to take the challenge afterwards, as well:

Gran Turismo Anywhere Coming February

Gran Turismo designer Kazunori Yamauchi has revealed that the “Remote Racing” PC and mobile applications will arrive in early February.

This tweet, according to GTPlanet, notes that the “Gran Turismo Anywhere” apps, which will allow players to control B-Spec races via a PC or mobile device, will be coming “early February”.

Of course, this is Yamauchi we’re talking about, so expect at least a 3 year delay.

Thrustmaster Gran Turismo Steering Wheel Launches for $599 in January

We all know that Polyphony Digital refers to their Gran Turismo series as, ‘The Real Driving Simulator’ – but this is just downright ridiculous!!

Full details about the new “official” GT5 steering wheel that we rumored a while back, have been confirmed. The Thrustmaster T500 RS will soon be available – and it’s fucking expensive.

The wheel will be launched on January 5 in North America and Europe for $599.99, £449.99, or €499.99

Note that this price only includes the wheel and serious business pedals – the uber realistic shifter, which will be released sometime later in 2011 - will cost extra.

Gran Turismo 5 Update 1.05 – Changes Detailed

Sony and Polyphony Digital drop another HUGE Gran Turismo 5 update, this one sitting at a whopping 600MB. RipTen has all the changes fully detailed.

An important new feature is the option to switch off the HUD while racing. Many complained about it previously.

Other notable features include the option to have mechanical damage in offline practice mode and a ‘grip reduction’ setting for wet tracks, and you can also rewind your replays – great for photo mode.

Here is a list of changes the update brings:

“[Seasonal Events] have been added to the upper left side of the [GT Mode] – [GT Life] screen. From here you can participate in official online events from the Polyphony Digital team.
In these events, all participants race under the same regulations, and if you complete the event you will win rewards and experience. In Time Trials and Drift Trials, compete on the leader boards with players around the world.
An [Online Dealership] has been added to the left center of the [GT Mode]-[GT Life] screen. In here you will find popular and rare used cars. You might just come across that one car you’ve always been looking for, that you haven’t been able to find in the [Used Car Dealer]
Online Race Rewards and Experience
When you complete a race in the [Open Lobby] or [My Lounge], you will now gain rewards and experience points.
Therefore if you are focused more on playing online, you’ll still be able to gain rewards and levels that you need to progress in [GT Life].
Driving Distance and Number of Wins in Online Races
The driving distance and the number of wins you achieve when you complete a race in [Open Lobby] or [My Lounge] will now affect your stats in [Profile] and the [Garage].
Here again the results from your online play will c*mulate within [GT Life].
Improved Rewards
The rewards for winning races in both A-Spec and B-Spec in [GT Mode]-[GT Life] have been increased for a limited time only. (This applies until the end of January 2011)
This is a great chance for those who were previously having difficulties getting ahead in the game, due to a lack of funds for tuning and purchasing required cars.
Race Information Display
[Race Information Display] is now available in [Start]-[Quick Options]. (You can also see this in [Race Display] in [Options]).
Save Data Backup
You can now copy and restore your save data. For details, please refer to the in-game [Manual].
Personal BGM (Menu)
From [Options]-[Hardware]-[Audio], it is now possible to set the [Personal BGM] (Menu)]. (This can also be accessed from the [Music Library] within [GT Mode]).
Car Name Change
The official name of “Red Bull X1″ has been changed to “Red Bull X2010″.
Integration with the Website
The main features within [GT Mode]-[Community] can now also be accessed through the “gran-turismo.com” official website.

Gran Turismo 5 Reality Show to Air on Speed Network

It seems the lead up to the American version of the Gran Turismo Academy is being made into a reality show.

Sony, Polyphony Digital and Nissan have partenered up and created a three-phase gaming contest that will air on the Speed network in 2011.

Show contestants will use Nissan vehicles in Gran Turismo 5, and earn “free digital content” for competing and other prizes in a competition to be selected one the top 32 virtual racers in the U.S.

The final winner earn their way onto the Gran Turismo Academy where they will join a professional racing team.

Sounds like a great idea for cross promotion.

Gran Turismo 5 Has Sold 5.5 Million Units

Worldwide sales of Gran Turismo 5 have hit 5.5 million, bringing the total series sales over 60 million.

Sales for the series have hit 60 million units, with Gran Turismo 3 (14.6m units sold) and Gran Turismo 4 (10.86 units sold) faring the best so far. With 5.5 million GT5 games sold already, it’s on track to be one of the best selling in the series.

Sales are dwarfed a bit, however, by Call of Duty: Black Ops’ performance: 8.4m copies in the first month in the US alone.

**UPDATE** Official sales to consumers =2.9 million. 5.5 is units shipped. Sony, as does Microsoft, reports Units Shipped as Units Sold.

1.) In GT5 you get a bonus car on your birthday based on the year you were born. Example – born in ’87 you get a car from 1987.

GT5 Update v1.03 Patch Has Dropped – Brings Mechanical Damage

As was promised, another Gran Turismo 5 Update has landed and this is a big one with 149MB of game changes.

With this update, an option for mechanical damage has been added to the settings for online races, with the following offerings:

“None” – No mechanical damage.
“Light” – Mechanical parts can be damaged, but will “automatically be repaired after a short time has passed.”
“Heavy” – Mechanical damage will be more severe, and can only be repaired by making a pit stop. Damaged parts will be indicated with on-screen icons.

This is all we know for now. Will keep you informed if there is more to come.

GT5′s New Official Steering Wheel Is F**king Expensive

Okay so maybe the official Thrustmaster Gran Turismo 5 wheel isn’t as super-radical as this one, but for $500 it better come damn close! Yes, the new Thrustmaster T500 RS will be five hundred dollars according to Kazunori Yamauchi after he announced it via his Twitter in response to a fan question.

Though he didn’t specifically state which regional dollar this pricetag goes off, it’s still an extremely high price-point for a virtual steering wheel, but Kazunori is quick to defend this “premium” product. Yamauchi said;

“The T500RS is a high-quality, premium steering wheel, and you can feel the delicate and rich feel of the steering.” “It will feature three pedals, a high-power motor, belt drive backlash-free, and high-speed processing at low latency.”

Sounds like an exceptional piece of hardware and it’s good to see Kazunori support it so strongly, but whether or not the consumer will pick it up remains to be seen.

Does Gran Turismo 5 Have a New Official Steering Wheel?

Someone might wanna call the guys at Logitech – it looks as if Thrustmaster has gotten an official endorsement from Polyphony Digital.

The Gran Turismo 5 v1.02 update – which is now live, features support for a brand new steering wheel, the Thrustmaster T500 RS. Thrustmaster’s website currently loops a trailer revealing the T500 RS’ new logo with official GT5 branding.

According to Thrustmaster, the T500 RS will feature, “Unmatched steering accuracy, thanks to the built-in H.E.A.R.T (HallEffect AccuRate Technology)” and “16-bit resolution with 65,536 values in the wheel’s rotation”.

Up until now, only the Logitech Driving Force GT wheel has carried the official GT logo.

We’ll continue to follow up on this story, but either way, Logitech having some serious competition in the driving peripheral market is certainly not a bad thing.

RipTen Review: Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)

Gran Turismo 5 has been an extremely long time coming, so long in fact that it’s main competitor, Forza, has had 3 iterations since Gran Turismo 4. Everyone’s aware of these delays since GT is one of Sony’s marquee titles, but is the end result worth the wait?

I’m going to admit it right now, I’m super-casual when it comes to Motorsports. I’m not a gearhead, I can barely drive a manual transmission car without looking like a complete jackass and the fastest car I’ve driven is a Bluebird. So in theory, something like Gran Turismo should be the last game I review.

Gran Turismo has a certain stigma associated with it, hell it’s slogan is, “The Real Driving Simulator”. Forza did an excellent job of opening up simulation styled driving games to a larger and more casual crowd, and I can say without a doubt Gran Turismo has now followed suite.

So whats the first thing you do after popping the disc in and watching the Epic opening movie? Well you opt-in for the 8GB install that takes 50 minutes. Yes, after waiting this long for the game to be released, you have to wait another hour before you can play – assuming you want shorter load-times, which you do. However once the tedious install is over, you’re presented with a few options. “GT-Life” is the career mode where you access A-Spec (Typical Racing) and B-Spec (Managerial simulator) modes, Arcade mode where you can free-race different cars, tracks and disciplines, Course Maker and GT-TV modes. Lets get right into the Meat & Potatoes of the game, GT-Life.

As I mentioned earlier, there are now two different gameplay styles to tackle your newfound career in Motorsports, A-Spec and B-Spec. A-Spec is a progression through various events such as “Clubman Cup” or “Japanese Classics” racing tourneys. You can also enter the “GT Special” events which include special races from the likes of Top-Gear and NASCAR. B-Spec is a managerial simulator mode, in which you hire & train drivers to compete in your stead in the various cups. The gameplay basically boils down to keeping the driver cool and composed through various commands like “Decrease Pace” or “Overtake Drivers”. You don’t want to push him too hard however or he’ll become stressed and possibly crash or just take too many risks which could cost the race. After winning, your driver will level up, furthering his skills behind the wheel and you too will level, in a separate B-Spec EXP bar which provides access to bigger and better events. B-Spec eventually feels like a basic mini-game distraction after awhile, though I found it to be a nice source of income when I needed a break from the typical racing, though that’s not to say the racing in this game is tiring – I was tired from playing 9 hours straight of it.

Yes, 9 hours straight. The Racing is very, very addictive and feels responsive, snappy and satisfying. Before you can get behind a wheel, you have to buy one. You’re given $20,000 to buy your first ride, which can be found in the used car department, such is GT tradition. This is where the 1,031 Car claim gets a little dicey – a good majority of them feel like up-rezed PS2 models (some of them even sport Playstation 2 decals). The cars you buy direct from the manufacturer are called “Premium” models, complete in HD glory with fully modeled interior and the ability to install Rims/Bodykits, now the Used cars on the other hand don’t look as great when put side to side with the premium models, have no interior cockpit views at all and the ability to install aesthetics is completely disabled. It’s a small gripe as the cars still look great, but it leaves the majority of the vehicles feeling under-appreciated.

After you buy a car, you’d want to enter some of the low-tier tournaments. Each of them have certain rules and restrictions, again such is tradition. Once you pick one, its on. Driving your car around the track is a treat, the graphics are phenomenal, even lifelike in spots. The Forza pioneered dynamic driving line is present for those (like myself) who need a little extra helping hand around tight corners and the game presents modifiable quick options such as transmission settings, which tires you want installed and a preset traction modifier. The true beauty of GT5 is the customization of the assists to reflect your personal skill, though unlike Forza it doesn’t give you any cash-multiplier or reward you for taking assists off, so the incentive to play around with the options really doesn’t exist. The game boasts 20 different locations to speed your vehicles through and all of the courses feel smartly designed and just damn fun to drive on, i never found myself smashing into an oddly placed wall or barrier. However, if the in-game tracks aren’t to your liking, go ahead and make your own with the rather powerful “Course Maker”. Pick the time of day, theme, weather and manipulate sections of track, its actually really awesome and fun to test your own creations, though its not as free-form and intuitive as something like Modnation Racers.

The soundtrack as your playing doesn’t just include the age old smokey jazz that GT is known for, it also includes an excellent mix of modern electronic artists such as Deadmau5, Sub Focus, Kele Okereke and Emo Glam-Rockers like My Chemical Romance. All of it added to the fast paced experience perfectly, but if you don’t like some of the songs, the ability to mix and match is present. The sound from the cars themselves are stunning, put a racing exhaust on your Skyline? Expect to hear it hissing at everyone as you speed on past. Put a supercharger in your Mustang? Listen as it grunts and shakes the ground with pure muscle car horsepower. In the Premium model cars (cockpit view only) the ability to use “Head-Tracking” with the PSEye exists and it actually works pretty well. Move your head slightly left, you’re now looking out the window to the left and vice versa. Though it did occasionally hitch up and somehow thought I was bobbing my head up and down, it worked fine for the most part and was actually quite fun to use.

So you win races, get money, level up for more higher tier events, buy new cars, upgrade body-kits and performance, rinse and repeat! This is the Gran Turismo formula, and there is plenty to do. With 40 levels for both A-Spec and B-Spec modes to earn you’ll be playing for weeks, even months to come. If you get sick of the usual circuit based racing there’s always Go-Karts, Rally, Drift events or go race classic VW wagons around and other odd cars with the boys from Top-Gear. The experience doesn’t just stop with you however, take your car collection online with up to 16 players racing at once. The online worked seamlessly in my tests, i never experienced any hitches or odd lag and racing other human opponents just makes the game endlessly more enjoyable.

Right from the opening movie you can tell Polyphony wanted to make something epic and revolutionary, however it’s still just another Gran Turismo. But that’s not a bad thing. From the refinements in tuning the cars, to the absolute responsiveness of the controls, Gran Turismo 5 is a must have for all lovers of Motorsports and even casual racers like myself will find a lot to like here. It’s moments when you’re flying through Tokyo doing 300Km/h, leaving everyone in the dust and the feeling the thrill of pushing a machine to it’s limit that really make you smile and appreciate the sheer amount of detail that’s gone into Gran Turismo 5.

GT5 Update Races to Your PS3 This Weekend

Sony’s long-awaited, recent released critically acclaimed racer Gran Turismo 5 will get an update on November 27th to, as designer Kazunori Yamauchi says, “refine the usability of the game to make it a better experience”. The update will include regulations such as max power and weight restrictions to tweak and improve online play.

Upon realease GT5′s “extreme online traffic congestion” hit the game’s data center affecting even single player games. As a temporary solution, Sony advised solo players to play while logged off of the PSN network. As it stood, the data center was configured to deal with 500,000 users but was hit by numbers far exceeding that limit.

As Yamauchi explained to Eurogamer:

“The design of the GT game really integrates the online and offline parts. Data Installation ‘Highly Recommended’ For Gran Turismo 5

For many PlayStation 3 games, data installation is a requirement for optimal performance. For Gran Turismo 5 data installation is optional, but highly recommended by Sony.

When booting the game and after downloading the first online patch, the player will be prompted, asking players to install GT5. 8GB will be required for this data installation, but it will reduce load times and keep a smooth/stable frame rate.

I don’t know about you, but I always permit “optional” data installations. It’s always good to optimize your game experience!

In a few days (cross your fingers) Gran Turismo 5 will finally be released for the PS3. Did you know it can be linked to the PSP version?

Gran Turismo PSP owners whio want to upload their car collection data, can do so by just connecting the PSP. proceeding to the Options menu and scrolling down to Others. From there, select Import Gran Turismo for the PSP system Car Collection data.

Simple and a great little bonus for PSP owner.
