Microsoft Looks to Produce Original TV Content for Xbox Live

According to Bloomberg anonymous sources, Microsoft is looking to hire an television executive to spearhead original programing on Xbox Live.

The computer company has hired Tom Schneider, a partner at a hiring consulting firm called Stratis LLC. Schneider’s job is to find the TV executive, so he or she may expand on Microsoft’s plans to make the Xbox console an internet set-top box.

According to these same unnamed sources, Schneider has approached Marc Graboff and Jeff Gaspin. Both men are former NBC execs.

Gaspin was the chairman of NBC Universal TV Entertainment, but stepped down once Comcast was the majority owner of the NBC.

Last week, Mirocosft updated the Xbox 360‘s ‘Dashboard,’ which will now heavily rely on TV entertainment. So far the company allows Netflix instant streaming, Hulu abd ESPN to be run on the system. But in the near future, players will be able to watch the Sony owned Crackle, BBC, HBO, Major League Baseball, UFC, along with other Internet channels.

With the Xbox 360, Microsoft hopes to gain an edge on other companies trying to break down the wall of Internet TV. Apple, Sony and Google are also in a fierce fight, but with Microsoft does have a competitive edge due to the almost 60 million Xbox’s in homes. And trying to get exclusive original content will only strengthening their product.

Game of Thrones: Genesis is coming out soon and Focus Home Interactive has just dropped a new trailer:

Genesis is the official PC strategy game based on the hit George R.R. Martin series. It’s an amazing book series, great HBO show, and next week fans will finally be able to play the videogame adaptation! The Release date is September 29th!

If the game doesn’t do it for ya, you can always watch the show while playing Heroes of Might and Magic 3 or something…

Sony’s PlayStation Network Secures Deal For HBO Original Content

If you’re a fan of shows like Entourage, The Sopranos, Sex and the City, The Wire, and countless other HBO Originals, you’ll soon be able to download various episodes from these shows via your PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable device thanks to a deal between Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA) and Home Box Office (HBO).

The content will require purchase, though an exact transaction amount or range has yet to be announced. Immediately available seasons and episodes are listed below, and the press release states that new titles/seasons will be added on a weekly basis.

New release and Emmy® and Golden Globe® winning series “True Blood®,” season two in addition to season one
Golden Globe®-winning drama series “Big Love®,” seasons one through three
Golden Globe®-winning comedy series Entourage®,” seasons one and two
Comedy hit “Eastbound and Down®,” season one
Multiple seasons from HBO signature shows such as “The Sopranos®,” “Sex and the City®,” “The Wire®,” “Rome®,” “Da Ali G Show®,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm®,” and “Flight of the Conchords®”

In commenting on the agreement, Sony’s Peter Dille, Sr. VP of Marketing and PlayStation Network, said the following:

“The HBO library of premium original content is a perfect example of how PS3 has become the most content rich entertainment platform in the living room … When you combine the iconic programming from HBO with the existing TV, film, live sports and original programming available on PlayStation Network, our customers have access to the content they want, when they want it, at home or on the go with the PSP.”

Ah, the old company line. And now, we sit and wait for the inevitable Microsoft response complete with their very own quotation pronouncing them king of the castle. It almost never gets old.

HBO Bids Farewell To George Carlin With Two Day Tribute

Our friend Norm Schrager at meetinthelobby.com is reporting that HBO will feature a two day George Carlin remembrance highlighting some of the master comedian’s greatest performances.

The tribute will begin on Wednesday, June 25th with Carlin’s 1977 USC performance and wrap up on Thursday, June 26thwith the premier of his final HBO special “It’s Bad for Ya”.
