The classic PC games Heretic and Hexen have been given new freedom across the internet with their release under the GNU Public Licence.

The new release means you can freely download, modify and distribute the source code as you wish, leading to much wider implications of the legal use of the games. Up until now players have had to resort to either breaking the law, or re-coding the games from scratch to play them along side other open source games.

With help from a massive community effort spanning over a decade, as well as a few insiders helping out, not least John Romero, the games are now free to roam unrestricted.
