Call of Duty Elite DLC for PS3 Dated, PS3 Patch Now Live

If you’ve yet to boot up Modern Warfare 3 today, chances are you still don’t know that patch 1.08 is now live for the PS3. Robert Bowling, Infinity Ward’s creative strategist revealed that the patch, ”includes improved voice chat quality, theater fixes, weapon rebalances.” If you want to read the complete patch note, click here.

In related news, Bowling also outed when PS3 Call of Duty Elite members will get their DLC. The new maps called – Liberation and Plaza, will drop on February 28 and that people will have to go to the Store in the multiplayer menu and choose to download the maps. For those uninformed, Xbox 360 Call of Duty Elite members got the map pack way back on January 24 – almost a full month after their PS3 counterparts.

While it might be annoying for PS3 players who paid for their Elite membership to get their content almost a month late compared to Xbox 360 users, that should be expected given that Microsoft does have an timed exclusivity deal when it comes to Call of Duty DLC. Of course, the fact that PS3 Elite members are paying to get the DLC in advance does make things a little bit harder to swallow, no?

There comes a time in a gamer’s life when he or she must sit down and tell themselves that enough is enough. We finally reached that point today after spending an extensive amount of time with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Truth is, we wanted to enjoy this game. We wanted to have that feeling that those millions gamers have while playing the Call of Duty franchise, the same feeling we “used” to have, but enough is enough. With each recent iteration of the series, each team that works on the franchise does a pretty decent job at implementing new features, weapons, killstreaks, etc, but their ability to execute them in a reasonable way, has simply diminished. For every one good thing they accomplish, they ruin other aspects. Modern Warfare 3 is no different. In fact, it’s one of the worst FPS multiplayer games we’ve played in a long time. Yes we’re going to say it. Are you ready? Homefront had better multiplayer than this.

The most interesting thing about Modern Warfare 3 would have to be it’s development story. Whilst playing through MW3 we could only imagine what it could have been if the original Infinity Ward stayed intact. Instead we’re given a product developed by the remnants of said studio and Sledgehammer Games, who were working on a third person CoD game. In a way, that in itself is severely disappointing, as mixing up the franchise with 3rd person dynamics could have been potentially interesting – instead we’re given another cookie cutter Call of Duty. Now, what that means to you depends on your stance toward the game – If you’re already huge into multiplayer, you probably aren’t even reading this review. However, if you’re looking for something fresh and exciting that stands tall against other games in its respective genre, then Modern Warfare 3 just isn’t for you. What we’re given in this $60 package can best be described as par for the course, or disappointing, or just a downright fucking travesty.

America, Fuck Maybe!!

Picking up immediately after the end of Modern Warfare 2, our old buddy Soap is in bad shape and the now disavowed TF141 is on the run – from everyone, or so the game leads you to believe (it doesn’t stop Price from calling in favors from the US army though). Makarov is being the typical bad bastard and has started another worldwide conflict. You’ll travel across the globe and play as a variety of characters trying to hunt down the illusive Russian, like the new-found Yuri who works with TF141, Sgt Frost who serves under Delta force and a few others a long the way (no spoilers!). It’s the same structure that we’ve become used to, and that’s fine, but when the various crescendos and dramatic sequences feel almost exactly like the last game’s, it really does break the illusion that this is something new. Yes, Makarov will open a door and shoot you. Yes, you’ll spend half a level riding in a vehicle playing an extremely boring turret sequence. Yes, a potentially emotional event just transpired… except it failed to hit the mark. It’s hard to describe the specifics without giving the plot away, but be prepared to basically re-enact the key plot points of Modern Warfare 2, and in some cases relive them entirely. We were pretty excited for the campaign in Modern Warfare 3, seeing as it’s always been a strong point in the series, but this time it just feels… empty.

In fact, it comes off feeling lazy. The story is ultimately a wild goose chase looking for information on Makarov and it just reminds us that we’ve done this all before. Perhaps that’s an analogy for the entire game. The engine is still the same, and though it can look fine in spots, stand still for too long and be prepared to feel like it’s 2007 again. Especially when the game’s put side by side with it’s contemporaries, it’s clear that this technology is aging, and not like a fine wine either. Pull the left trigger to aim, right to shoot and keep walking forward while your AI teammates stare at the enemies and eventually catch up to you (while yelling at you to follow them the whole time). After defeating countless waves of soldiers, you can advance to the next section where it’ll take place all over again. Then there’s an explosion, then a small controllable quick time event, and it all just lacks the punch of the previous games – it’s diminishing returns all over.

This Could Have Been A Powerful Stage...

Price and Soap lack the character of the previous installment, and are more concentrated on hiding behind cover and occasionally taking shots. The music has also been toned down, and it’s no longer epic or inspiring. Hans Zimmer’s MW2 soundtrack will always be stuck in my head, especially the ranger’s multiplayer theme, but there’s really no jingles or theme songs that can stand up to the calibre of Hans’ past work. Sure, the game definitely wraps up the trilogy, but not in a particularly interesting way, or one that does the series justice. It can best be described as a 4-5 hour boring trudge through familiar territory.

Multiplayer is also more of the same, with a few minor adjustments that don’t particularly stand-out. There’s the Kill confirmed mode, where after killing someone you must claim their dogtag in order for the kill to be counted, and Team Defender where whichever team holds the flag gets double points. There’s also the new point streak system, which replaces the typical killstreak format. You’ll chose either Assault, Support or Specialist. This will change the way your streaks are rewarded and earned. For example the typical player who want’s to kill and earn an assault helicopter or gunner seat will pick assault – You’ll stack kills and earn these killstreaks the same as before.

Shoot That Guy.

The support player specializes in utility streaks, like advanced UAV’s and EMP’s. He earns these by getting points for killing, capturing objectives and the like. His points will not be reset on death, so it’s a good opportunity for lesser skilled players to still call in something every so often. Finally, the specialist who instead of earning killstreaks, earns new perks with every second kill. Though these are quite different from each other, the game still boils down to whoever gets the most offensive killstreaks wins. It’s nice that lesser players can still help the team now, but the Osprey Gunner is still going to completely dominate the ground forces and that one guy you know who always gets 25 kills is going to set off a M.O.A.B.

The maps this time around are also completely weak compared to previous installments, with the exception of Dome. They’re confusing in layout, not visually appealing and they aren’t even as memorable as MW2′s Favela or Terminal. They’re confusing to navigate, and some offer little to no strategic cover from the constant airstrikes. The spawn issues are also frustrating, and being killed from someone who has literally spawned behind you is never fun – especially when you’re trying to build a streak. As guys who put some 300 hours in MW2′s multiplayer, the compulsion to sit here and constantly level just doesn’t click. It’s an ultimately frustrating experience – even when you’re dominating. Not to discredit everyone’s playstyle, but people running around with snipers using them like shotguns, or other players humping a wall with a heartbeat sensor just takes away the neutral ground. It’s a constant explosionfest that feels often skilless, especially in Team Deathmatch.

Modern Warfare 3 Stolen – Leaked on the Internet

Look, up in the sky! It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s another leaked game! At a shipping warehouse in Fresno, California, someone managed to get their hands on half of a 2-disc set for the upcoming Modern Warfare 3. There’s no telling what’s on which disc, but the hunt for anyone who’s pirated the game is on. One pirate issued a warning to anyone stupid enough to get it illegally:

“Do not buy MW3 before release date. They will come get you. I already went through it.”

If you’re someone who can’t go 20 minutes without being on the internet, like me, I’ve got one piece of advice for you: stay away from Youtube. Seriously. Otherwise, you’ll end up seeing who died in Halo: Reach, or watching the ending to Gears of War 3. You’ll hate yourself for it, but you won’t be able to look away.

Holy marketing tactics batman!

GameStop UK is currently running a promotion that will allow you to get Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 for 99p if you trade in Battlefield 3. There’s not even that much of a catch!

Here’s what you have to do:

So, you have to pre order both games online. Then return Battlefield 3 before November 18th and you will be refunded for your entire purchase of Modern Warfare 3 – minus the 99p. So, you get a full three weeks to play Battlefield 3 before returning it for Modern Warfare 3. Quite the interesting deal.

I bet GameStop is banking on the fact that you won’t end up returning Battlefield 3 and will therefore have ended up buying and keeping both games. Even if you do return Battlefield 3 (which has to be in near perfect condition according to the fine print) they can resell it for a major profit. While this promotion cannot hurt EA‘s new game sales, it can certainly boost new game sales for Activision. Quite brilliant really. Everybody wins, especially GameStop. What do you think?

Infinity Ward Confirms There Can Be Only One MW3 Collectors Edition

Since the release of Modern Warfare 2, each Call of Duty game has had a Prestige Edition. They aren’t just known for that, but also for having something worth $150 that’s also batshit insane. Based on recent history, I’d have thought that MW3′s Prestige Edition would come with a spy plane or a working ACR, but it looks like that won’t be happening at all. Infinity Ward employee Robert Bowling recently tweeted that the Hardened Edition would be the only collector’s edition for the game.

“The Hardened Edition of #MW3 will be the only collectors edition available this year.”

There you have it folks. For $99 dollars, the Hardened Edition is yours. It doesn’t get any better than that. Seriously, they didn’t make a better version. Sure, you still get that year of CoD Elite, but it doesn’t look like you’ll be flying around a remote-controlled jet anytime soon. Does this mean anything to you?

Modern Warfare 3 will be available on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC on November 8.

Modern Warfare 3 Will Use Steamworks and Feature Dedicated Servers

It seemed like a no-brainer for Valve to team up with Activision and Infinity Ward to bring Modern Warfare 3 to Steam, and it has finally happened. The war juggernaut is will release on Steam November 8th, the same day that it hits retailers nationwide.

Both the retail and downloadable PC copies of Modern Warfare 3 will be powered by Steamworks, the Valve system that allows for auto-updating, achievements, and all sorts of other features. The game will also feature dedicated servers from day one.

Treyarch Will Help Bring Modern Warfare 3 to the Wii

The Call of Duty franchise has grown to become one of the industry’s most profitable. So, having said that, you know damn well the series has also become an annual affair for Activision. But who in their right mind is to complain when each iteration’s multiplayer keeps one hooked for hours on end. Enter, Modern Warfare 3.

The sequel to one of the biggest commercial successes in entertainment history will be launching on November 8th for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. But wait! Now we can add the Wii to that multi-platform list. And, once again, Treyarch will be stepping in to handle the waggle-friendly port– like they’ve done in the past with Modern Warfare 2 (Reflex), World at War and Black Ops. We can all agree on one thing, though: It’s very, very likely that each and every version of MW3 will sell like crazy come this Holiday season.

Sad But True: Battlefield is Too Hardcore to Overthrow Call of Duty

It’s all over the internet and the gaming websites: Battlefield 3 or Modern Warfare 3? EA and Activision have been trading blows with each other for months now and it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop until the year’s out. Two juggernaut franchises vying for top shooter. Meanwhile, gamers are expected to spend $74 Billion this year and it’s safe to say that gaming is socially accepted. So who will win? Battlefield 3 will put up one hell of a fight, but Modern Warfare 3 will win. Not because it’s a better game, but because it’s casual enough for anyone to play.

Call of Duty 4 and every game in the series since have had an incredibly successful formula. Star with a very glitzy, exciting, and cinematic single player campaign, then throw in a fast paced and solid, back-to-basics multiplayer mode (until recently). Today, Call of Duty’s single player is more or less a camera controlled by you, the player. Play the game and see how few shots you really need to fire, it’s saddening, yet it works. Most people wouldn’t notice it, those people being “casual gamers”. Yet, the single player “experience” is so polished and exciting looking that no one notices that the levels are incredibly linear, dull, feature very little “gameplay” at all – just scripted events. As for the multiplayer, you have powerful guns (all of them) that have very low recoil and great accuracy. So, you can inflict a lot of damage quickly thus downing your target quickly. If you’re good at cover and know how to use “health regen”, then you can take a lot of damage as well and still recover. Hell, even shooting from the hip is commonplace and works just fine as well. In fact, there are very few consequences for any of your actions unless you’re incredibly foolhardy. Add to this perks, perks and more perks and you have a fun and simple game that passes the time easily.

Lets face it though, we really only buy Call of Duty for the multiplayer. Better yet, the games can also be run on almost any computer and ports to all the consoles easily, even the Wii! The reason being is that they’ve been using a heavily modified Quake 3 engine since Call of Duty 2. So, each year it’s pretty much the same game, just with better graphics. While the game brings little in terms of gameplay innovation or physics, it can still maintain a decent amount of eye candy and, of course, solid frame rates on all platforms. Better yet, Call of Duty’s multiplayer also has little to no team work, even in the actual team based modes. So, just about anyone can play and do well by themselves and come out satisfied when playing CoD. So, since the formula ain’t broken – Modern Warfare 3 doesn’t look to be changing anything.

However, my first time playing Battlefield 2 was horrendous -I hated it. I didn’t understand how the game was playing out and I was infuriated that when I shot at people it did little damage or didn’t seem to register at all. At first I blamed my internet connection. Damn Lag! Yet, it wasn’t until after a friend showed me how to actually play the game that I opened my mind and learned that Battlefield is a complex beast. Outside of Bad Company and the upcoming Battlefield 3, there was little single player experience to be had, so we’ll ignore the Bad Company’s for now.

Fact: Battlefield’s gun play is more realistic than Call of Duty.

Recoil matters, you cannot spray and pray, you have to aim and fire in controlled bursts. Not to mention that the newest Frostbite engines have bullet drop, so now the player must aim high for distance shots and expect them to do less damage. With the new physics and destruction, Battlefield damn near redefines the first person shooter. The player can now change the map entirely by destroying environments. With vehicles, the entire game is changed in how you approach your objectives. Battlefield also utilizes classes, along with perks and upgrades for the levels per class and the game modes also require teamwork to be successful. The Bad Company spin offs attempted to reach out to casual gamers by making the gameplay faster paced and more simple like CoD. It had no prone, four basic classes, and no Commanders or squad leaders… less tactics if you will. Battlefield 3 will be doing some of that, but at its core it will still be a large team based and tactical shooter. Far more hardcore than CoD.

Innovation - You Can Has

What does all this mean? Quite frankly, from my experience, Battlefield is too complicated to overthrow Call of Duty. Any Battlefield veteran can point out someone who is either new to the game or a Call of Duty player. They’ll usually start by calling everyone hackers and complaining a lot. Battlefield’s best attempt at single player has been Bad Company and Bad Company 2. The characters were great, better than Call of Duty’s in fact. However, the over the top cinematic experience of CoD wasn’t there (Battlefield went with gameplay), and the gunplay was similar to the multi-player – much more complicated than it’s Call of Duty counterpart.

I personally found Bad Company 2 to be overly simplified for a Battlefield game, yet I thought it was still complex enough to hold my attention. Online, it had a simpler class system that was pretty well balanced – yet it just didn’t have the excitement that Call of Duty had. Battlefield has a learning curve, not a necessarily high one, but it’s there. Call of Duty has next to no learning curve, anyone can jump in and play. There is nothing to learn with Call of Duty, there are no game mechanics to understand – just know what the kill streak chain is and you’ll do fine. Call of Duty is more open to casual gamers and is more polished as what it is than Battlefield. This goes far beyond console vs console vs PC, this is challenging gameplay vs first person camera dolly and simplified run and gun multiplayer.

We're Not So Different... You And I...

Modern Warfare 3 will outsell Battlefield 3. I don’t doubt that one bit. Battlefield 3 should sell extremely well and could convert some Call of Duty players over, but only if EA knows how to market the better engine, the vehicles and the different type of gameplay. Perhaps, if Battlefield 3 does well enough, the next Battlefield game will over throw the next Call of Duty game. One can only hope. Ultimately, it would serve Battlefield 3 better if they and EA stopped comparing themselves to Call of Duty.

If gamers want to play Call of Duty, they’ll buy Call of Duty, not Battlefield 3.

GoDaddy Rats Out the ModernWarfare3.com Owner

A few weeks ago, the funniest and greatest example of trolling hit the internet ever when someone had the balls to redirect ModernWarfare3.com to Battlefield 3′s website. Activision, naturally, was upset and has been trying to find out who did it. Well, Bobby Kotick and crew can stop their manhunt, as GoDaddy, via their “Domains by Proxy” hiding service, has outed the man who snagged the domain from Activision.

That man, in question, is Anthony Abraham from Miami, Florida. His trolling and obvious dislike of Activision has landed him in more hot water than he’d expected. Activision’s filed a domain name dispute with the National Arbitration Forum, and now that they know who Abraham is, he is pretty screwed. At the moment, the ModernWarfare3.com URL just brings up an error, as opposed to the Monty Python spoof video that was on through the weekend.

While all of this is pretty frigging funny, Activision has kind of brought this on themselves. They knew good and well that with the success of Modern Warfare 2 that there’d be a Modern Warfare 3, Infinity Ward issues be damned. It’ll be interesting to see what happens to Abraham in the end. In the meantime, I’d like to award Mr. Abraham with the “Troll of the Year” award.

Of course, even with all this trolling, it won’t matter until Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 duke it out on October 25 and November 8, respectively, of this year.

ModernWarfare3.com is Directing Users to the Battlefield3 Website!

Battlefield 3 vs. Modern Warfare 3 is easily the most heated rivalry this year with EA constantly taking indirect shots at Activison. However, this next move might come as a bit of a surprise.

It’s one thing to talk smack in a interview about your competition, but it appears that someone decided to go straight for the throat this time. Call of Duty fans will be presented with an unpleasant surprise if they happen to stumble across ModernWarfare3.com trying to view their highly anticipated upcoming shooter. Instead of viewing what you attempted to view, you will be redirected to the official website for Battlefield 3!

This isn’t the first time there has been a direct jab taken at the heart of Call of Duty. Last year before launching their highly anticipated Battlefield: Bad Company 2, EA had launched UltimatePresitge.com that provided insider information on weapons, vehicles and map information. There’s only one problem. You actually had to have played Modern Warfare 2 to even access the site. I must say, if it was indeed them… well played EA, well played.

Call of Duty Elite Beta Invites Going Out July 14th

If you managed to sign up for the Call of Duty Elite Beta that showed up about a month ago, you might want to check your email as Activision has begun sending out emails.

If you signed up for the beta you should be receiving an email from Activision here shortly with a pre-beta survey invite, but the survey wont reflect your chances of participating. The email also notes the first wave of beta invites will be sent out starting July 14th. The email should look a little something like this:

Sledgehammer’s COD Spin-off Title Hasn’t Been Forgotten

Before Sledgehammer Games started work on Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, they had their own action adventure game set in the Call of Duty universe. Activision suggest the title could still see a release.

Publishing chief Eric Hirshberg has said that the project hasn’t been forgotten but the studio is currently concentrating its efforts on helping Infinity Ward finish up MW3.

“They were originally working on an extension of the Call of Duty franchise into an action/adventure genre and that’s a game I still want to play. That’s a supreme, incredible group doing that. All I can say is right now they’re 100% focused on Modern Warfare 3.”

Modern Warfare 3 is set for release on November 8th for Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and PC.

E3 2011: Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Gameplay from Today’s Microsoft Keynote

Here is the full ten minute gameplay sequence of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 from the just-finished Microsoft keynote from E3.

The footage shows a secontion played underwater, in a sub, and then racing about on a speedboat as a Navy SEAL. It looks pretty amazing, even despite being so similar to the first two games so far. The Manhattan background setting seems to have a lot of promise, too. Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Survival Mode and Spec-Ops Outlined For Modern Warfare 3

You would hardly think of USA Today as a place to get any sort of gaming news, but it appears they got the proverbial scoop on this one. The new Modern Warfare appears to already be shaping up blow the other installments out of the water. The first changes will be a revamped and beefed up Spec-Ops and a brand new Survival Mode.

The Spec-Ops mode gains a progressive ranking system, similar to the online multiplayer of the previous titles, online matchmaking, and leaderboards. However, the much more interesting aspect of the package is the survival mode. It involves surviving wave after wave of enemies similar to Zombie mode from Call of Duty: Black Ops. It seems that maybe Infinity Ward may have taken a page out of Treyarch’s book this time instead of the other way around.

The survival mode will take place on the muliplayer maps and will allow players to fight exploding soldiers, rabid, exploding dogs, and I’m experience more exploding phenomena. Here’s what Robert Bowling and Mark Rubin of Infinity Ward had to say about the new mode.

“All that stuff really fleshes out Spec Ops and adds in a lot that we know our fans are going to love, some of the most addictive aspects of Multiplayer,” says Infinity Ward creative strategist Robert Bowling.

“You definitely have to change up your strategy as the enemy changes up,” Bowling said afterward. “Obviously how you fight the kamakazi dudes is different from how you fight the normal dudes and how you fight a dog is different from a dude and how you fight juggernauts, they are not only big and armored, so they will just brute force come at you. But they each have their own way of being taken out effectively.”

Yes, there are juggernauts returning from the previous games; there will be several different types of them, too. But back in the game, I took heed from Rubin on how to counterattack choppers raining fire from overhead. The game has an unlimited number of waves. “We got up to wave 8 which is really a good wave for a first time player,” Rubin pronounces afterwards.

Survival Mode sounds like a welcome edition to the already solid host of modes offered in the Modern Warfare titles. I’ll be gathering a crew together and getting ready to test my survival instincts as soon as this game hits the shelves.
