Mega Man Universe Has Been Cancelled

Nobody’s world will be Mega-fied this year. Capcom has just announced that Mega Man Universe has been cancelled.

According to reports on Andriasang,

In a post at the game’s official site today, Capcom listed the reason for the cancelation as a vague “various circumstances.”

Mega Man Universe was going to be a very community centric game. Players would be allowed to create and share their own levels online and play as tons of different characters from the Mega Man (and Capcom) universe and even create their own custom characters.

I was there when they revealed the game and San Diego Comic Con 2010, and also got to play a bit of the game with Capcom during the week of New York Comic Con. Some of the concepts were pretty cool, and it was definitely funny to play as “Bad Box Art” Megaman for a few levels.

However, the whole concept felt a bit like an over-hyped gimmick that would never really translate into a profit. To be honest, I’m not surprised the game has been cancelled and it was likely the right move.

It probably doesn’t help that Keiji Inafune is no longer with Capcom either.

Keiji Inafune Says Goodbye To Capcom

Keiji Inafune, best known for creating the legendary Mega-Man and producing the hilarious zombie slaying game Dead Rising has just announced on his personal blog that he is to resign from his position at Capcom.

He joined Capcom 23 years ago as a character designer working his way into the prestigious role of head of Research & Development and Online Business, as well as Global Head of Production. In his goodbye post, Inafune cites Capcom as a great company, stating that he loves it “probably more then anyone else”.

As for his reason for leaving, he states he has no steps left to climb as he’s already reached the highest level in game development. Inafune will be resigning officially later this month, also stating there wont be a chance that he will ever return to Capcom.

I’m sure all of us here at RipTen can respect the work hes done for our industry, and we’ll be sad to see him go.

Blue Castle Games is now Capcom Game Studios Vancouver

The Canadian developer responsible for Dead Rising 2 has been fully acquired by Capcom and is now Capcom Game Studios Vancouver. According to Keiji Inafune (Capcom MCO) the work of Blue Castle speaks for itself and he is very proud to be able to work with developers who can make games that feel like Capcom games, even when they are half a world away.

Rob Barret, president of Blue Castle Games has said, “We take this responsibility very seriously. Capcom games have a certain flavor … we don’t just want to make amazing games, we want to make amazing Capcom games.”

Well, we’ll all see how amazing Dead Rising 2 is on September 28th. However, I believe congratulations are in order for all those involved at Blue Castle, this is really great news for them.

Mega Man Art Contest Winner Announced

First off I want to thank everyone for their patience. This was a very hard decision to make and it involved much discussion internally. In the end we decided that the art would be awarded to the person we believed showcased that they were the biggest Mega Man fan.

Confirmed: Mega Man 9 in September, Original Mega Man Hits VC Monday 8/4

Those who hunger for retro Mega Man goodness will be happy to know that Mega Man 1 hits Nintendo’s VC this Monday, and the much anticipated Mega Man 9 will be available in September. The quoted portion below is directly from the official Capcom blog.

To prepare all you Mega Man fans for the release of Mega Man 9 in September, we’re going to offer you the opportunity to play the game that started it all. The orginal Mega Man game returns on the Virtual Console this Monday, August 4, 2008. Yes, that’s right. Brush up on your old school skills and prepare for some cool contests we have in store. We also plan to re-release Mega Man 2 in early September as well.

As great as this new sounds, there’s one thing that will make your Mega Man experience even better — some original Mega Man art by the man who created him. Don’t forget to sign up for our Keiji Inafune Mega Man art contest before it’s too late.
