Nvidia and DICE Kick off the GeForce LAN With a Bang (Video)

A big boat. A really big boat. A really big bad ass boat actually.

This baby served in the WWII and went to Midway and back.

Now, the USS Hornet is home to the Nvidia GeForce LAN 6. A three day celebration of PC gaming and Battlefield.

I’ve already taken hundreds of pictures and have some cool stories in the works, but in the meantime, how about you watch this video of the keynote which Nvidia has put together so you get a better idea of just what’s going on around here.

Watch as Drew Henry, General Manager of the GeForce product line from NVIDIA and Johan Andersson, the Chief Architect at DICE jointly present the state of PC gaming as seen through the lens of the Battlefield franchise.

It all started in 2002 with the release of Battlefield 1942, a game that many us have fond memories of. When the vintage game was shown on stage, it sent the crowd into a roaring cheer; many continue to play 1942 even as they ready theirmachines for its ultimate successor, Battlefield 3.

When the camera cut to Battlefield 3, it was like fast forwarding ten years into the future. Except the future was the present. The blurry, cartoony world was replaced by an intense, gritty rendering of a refinery complex in the sun parched Middle Eastern desert. The map was Operation Firestorm, one of the largest in the game. All the signature vehicles of Battlefield was on offer, from tanks, jets to helicopters. This map was made exclusively available for play at GeForce LAN. The crowd was jubilant.

Graphics have come a long way since 2002. The flagship GPU at the time of Battlefield 1942 was the GeForce 4600 Ti. Today, it’s the GeForce GTX 580. “Ti” refers to a faster version, and today it’s still available on the GeForce GTX
560, the GPU that DICE recommends for Battlefield 3.

That’s right, we’re on a boat.

E3 2011: Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Gameplay from Today’s Microsoft Keynote

Here is the full ten minute gameplay sequence of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 from the just-finished Microsoft keynote from E3.

The footage shows a secontion played underwater, in a sub, and then racing about on a speedboat as a Navy SEAL. It looks pretty amazing, even despite being so similar to the first two games so far. The Manhattan background setting seems to have a lot of promise, too. Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Minecraft Coming to Xbox 360 With Kinect Support

The super-ultra-indie-megahit Minecraft will be hitting Xbox 360 according to the Xbox 360 keynote at E3.

“I’m thrilled to announce that Minecraft is making its console debut this winter exclusively on Xbox 360 and Kinect,” said Phil Spencer of Microsoft Game Studios.

The 360 version will have Kinect support but we’re unsure of how this will play out quite yet. NERDS REJOICE!

Whoops: Microsoft Leaks Existence of Halo 4

Microsoft accidentally updated their website earlier today with references to Halo 4 and Dance Central 2, among other games. This news comes in just a few hours before the huge keynote later on today.

Yes, the penis that is Microsoft has only gone and spunked its biggest secret into the massive vagina of public knowledge, leaving it a little disappointed. Don’t worry Microsoft, it’s not nearly as bad as you think.

Other games mentioned in the leak (spotted by NowGamer) include Kinect Star Wars, Dance Central 2, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, and Kinect Sports Season 2.

RipTen Team Ready to Tackle E3 2011

E3 2011 is almost here and RipTen is once again ready to deliver real independent press to every nerd.

Dave is loading up his Prada bag with all the traveling Jew essentials, and Chad’s got enough Twinkies to last him through mid day Wednesday — at which point he will be in a very bad mood. Danielle and Stephanie are officially West Coast girls now, and we’re fairly certain that gives them a license to say things like “fer sure” and “totally”.

With a new Nintendo console set to be announced, you can bet your Club Nintendo points that Justin, The King Nintendo Fanboy will be crowned and on site in rare form, hunting down every piece of Nintendo swag he can get his hands on.

E3 2011, also marks the first time we have ever had one of our overseas staff members make the trip to join us! We were unsure if he was going to be able to make it at first, but in the end, Bryce was able to find someone to watch over his kangaroo farm, and we’re glad to have him present and accounted for at this year’s show.

In addition to our on-location team, RipTen will have a dedicated crew at home, working to keep the site up-to-date so that you remained thoroughly informed with news, rumors, and reveals as they happen.

Live blogging is something we’ve previously done as a simple one man show since the site’s inception back in 2007, but this year we here at Ripten decided to kick things up a notch with polls, reader question responses, live photography, and a more team oriented approach. More like a group therapy session for gamers and less like a stale PowerPoint presentation you have to fight to stay awake through.

Well, I’m so proud of the way the day one live blogs for the Microsoft, EA, and Ubisoft keynotes turned out that I decided to share a few of my favorite quotes with you. I hope they make you laugh as much as they did me, and I hope you join us for our second day of live blogging scheduled to resume tomorrow with the Nintendo keynote at 9am PST and Sony keynote at 11:30am PST. Microsoft Keynote Live Blog Highlights

Gavin Bard: First mention of Kinect, everybody do a shot.

E310: Day One On-Site Wrap Up

Gotta’ admit, I’m pretty tired after an amazing Activision concert that wrapped up a long and otherwise frustrating day for me. It started off badly, considering my flight was delayed two hours in Boston, and I ended up missing both the Microsoft and EA press conferences. Luckily, Dave “GET SOME!!” Oshry was already on site, and able to attend in my absense.

In addition, the amazing Ripten home team busted their ass to bring you all the big reveals that went down, while our fast-fingered live bloggers brought you up to the minute keynote information.

I’m going to start my day one wrap up with some quick thoughts on the Ubisoft keynote, unless of course you’d like to hear more about my airport fiasco, the cool Sicilian guy I met who owns his own makeup company, and the giant former bouncer they sat me next to on the flight? Didn’t think so.

The Ubisoft E310 keynote was interesting. I myself have never played with Rabbits or Rayman so I don’t have much to say there other than the Rabbits looked cute and the Rayman looked colorful and fun if you’re into that sort of game.

The footage of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, Driver, and Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood werem more up my alley. Community’s Joel Mchale shined as the Ubisoft host, giving his color commentary during the on stage gameplay sessions. My personal favorite was after a would be sniper took a bullet to the head. Joel quickly added “hey that guys got a family.”

As far as the workout game and the musical based intro — I wasn’t as much of a fan. Being a bigger guy, I’m not really interested in having a video game that involves me jumping up and down with a virtual Jillian Michaels.

That aside, my biggest WTF moment would still have to be the intoduction of the in-home laser tag game called “Battle Tag.” That’s right kids, break the vase, kick in the TV, and punch grandma in the face, because nothing is off limits with Battle Tag.

If you’ve got a living room the size of the Kodak Theater, you’re probably going to be just fine letting a group of hyper kids run through your home firing plastic rifles at each other. But anything smaller than that, and you’re just asking for trouble.

A Michael Jackson game was announced at the closing of the Ubisoft Keynote, and the crowd seemed to like it. Dancers took the stage reinacting MJ’s classic hit “Beat It” in a game set to use the Microsoft Kinect device as a means to help you mimic his iconic dancing moves.

From there, it was a quick run to the hotel for a shower and change before heading off to the Activision night time event at the Staples Center. I mentioned it a bit in the intro here, but I’ll add a little more detail before I call it a night.

The show kicked off with DJ Z-Trip getting everyone pumped, and then quickly shifted to Usher rising up from the stage. He performed a few songs, and was eventually joined by the Black Eyed Peas’ Will-I-am in his closing act. Other appearances included Jane’s Addiction rocking out to “Been Caught Stealing”, Chris Cornell performing Black Hole Sun, Tool’s Maynard James Keenan doing an excellent cover of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, a massive stripper pole climbed at least 40 feet by a fairly attractive and completely insane woman in a bikini, and several other groups of half naked woman doing various dances throughout the night.

Of course, Activision also found the time to splice in some video game footage during the musical performances, along with a quick half pipe session conducted by Tony Hawk and friends to promote his upcoming game “Tony Hawk Shred.” This one actually looked somewhat decent and pretty colorful too.

The show was closed out with some solid Call of Duty: Black Ops footage featuring a nice arcade like helicopter sequence with lots of well timed fireworks pumped into the arena to scare the shit out of everyone anytime an in-game explosion went off (and there were plenty).

Finally, as we suspected, Eminem took the stage to cap the night with a few solid renditions, including a special guest duet with the rude boy lover herself, Rhianna. He left the stage after an encore performance of “Lose Yourself.”

That’s pretty much it. Got to hand it to Activision for putting on a great show and pimping their warez at the same time. Free beer, free concession stand snacks, and tons of great entertainment. I’m pretty sure everyone left that place happier than they walked in.

PlayStation 3 Pitchman Kevin Butler To Make E3 Appearance?

A recent exchange of tweets initiated by GameTrailers TV host Geoff Keighly, and directed towards Sony’s PlayStation 3 pitchman Kevin Butler, seem to give the impression that funny-man Butler will be lending his comic genius to an E3 2010 appearance. The tweet rundown is as follows:

I’m personally all for this as I find most press conferences extreemly dry in their current format. If this holds true, it’s safe to say that Kevin weould bring lots of laughs to the Sony E3 2010 keynote.

Virtual Console to support arcade titles

If I was at GDC, then I could say that I was at the Nintendo keynote, but instead, I’ll just report some news that I found as if I was. The Wii’s Virtual Console service will soon include arcade games as well as the myriad of other retro platforms it supports. The four available now are:

* Gaplus (Namco Bandai): 600 Wii Points
* Mappy (Namco Bandai): 500 Wii Points
* The Tower Of Druaga (Namco Bandai): 500 Wii Points
* Starforce (Tecmo): 500 Wii Points

Space Harrier and Solvalou are on the way as well. Although British arcades when I was wee didn’t have obscure games like this (at least not the ones near me), I have hope that the addition of arcade games will allow the Virtual Console to be even more comprehensive.

Final Fantasy XIII, Gears of War 2, Motorstorm 2, Alan Wake at GDC 2008?

What games will be at GDC 2008? The infamous Surfer Girl says three of the above titles will be there, along with four more “definites”. We can confirm six others.

In a response to a poster who asks what games will be at GDC this year, Surfer Girl says “YES” to seven games. These games are MotorStorm 2, Alan Wake, Too Human, InFamous, LittleBigPlanet, Killzone 2 and Gears of War 2.

There are three other games that might possibly make it to the event: SOCOM PS3, Metal Gear Solid 4, and WipEout HD.

Unlike last year, Sony and Nintendo won’t be having keynote presentations, so it might be wishful thinking to expect anything on the scale of Sony’s reveal of Home and LittleBigPlanet.

On the other hand, there is a Microsoft day booked for Tuesday, along with an hour long Microsoft keynote. Big things could be coming from the Xbox camp.

What games can we confirm for GDC? Mercenaries 2, Far Cry 2, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, and Battlefield: Bad Company.

In addition to these, Square Enix will be presenting their Final Fantasy XIII engine, and three big Fable 2 secrets will be revealed. You heard it here first.
