Killzone Re-Release for PS3 Delayed “Indefinitely”

Killzone‘s official Twitter page has said that a re-release of Killzone for PS3 has been delayed until further notice.

It said:

With regards to KZ1 for PS3, not sure what happened but I’ve been informed that it’s been delayed indefinitely.

This news comes despite the fact that Sony has said rumours of a re-release for Killzone 1 were “false“.

It’s a shame, since I think Killzone 1 was actually a rather good game- and I didn’t really like Killzone 2.

Another release week without, yet again, a full physical release title. Though this week won’t be a complete dissapointment with a few key digital releases.

PS3 shooter fanatics should should be thrilled with a PS3 release of the PS2 shooter classic Killzone. Disappointingly, Killzone will not be getting the HD treatment, but it should make for a great pick-up for those who missed out on the PS2 classic.

The PSN finally gets ScaryGirl which can best be described as wondrous adventure into a distinctive and beautifully bizarre world.

The Sims 3: Master Suite Stuff adds some sizzle to their home life! From stylish bedroom sets to spa-inspired bathroom furnishings to romantic new lingerie and hairstyles, your Sims will relax in comfort and style with this add-on available on the PC.

Play Oil Rush and engage in a global war for oil in the flooded post-apocalyptic world of Oil Rush, a real-time naval strategy game based on group control that combines strategic challenge of classic RTS with sheer fun of Tower Defense, all wrapped in state-of-an-art visuals. Oil Rush will be available for PC.

Pick of the Week: When Guerrilla games first released Killzone in 2004, it was created as a Halo killer. While it did not reach its lofty goal, it was still recognized for Amazing graphics and an intense gameplay experience. Being that I have never played the original, I will definitely pick-up this PSN re-release (although I’d be happier if it were in HD) – Killzone

Sony is Porting Killzone to the PSN. Sorry, No HD

For those of you who have never experienced the original Killzone, Guerilla Games and Sony games is giving you another chance by porting it to the PSN. Do note that this isn’t a HD remaster or a remake, just a straight port, so you’ll be stuck with the same old standard-def PS2 graphics.

The port is slated for a January 24th release, to be priced at $9.99 for US players. Sorry, European gamers. You’re going to have to wait until Guerilla or Sony confirms that it’ll also be available in Europe.

Yes, Guerilla Says There Will Be More Killzone

The Killzone series started out as niche title, but quickly rose to popularity with the release of Killzone 2 in 2009. With Killzone 3 all said and done, you may have thought Guerrilla had washed its hands of the franchise, right? Wrong.

According to an issue of Edge that’s about to hit newsstands, most of Guerrilla’s staff is working on the follow-up to Killzone 3. Guerilla recruiter Adrian Smith says, “We’ve got to continue the Killzone franchise.” To add further fuel to the fire, Killzone 2 and 3 producer Steven Ter Heide is reported as the game’s director on the current Killzone project. Of course, whether this is Killzone 4 or an episodic adventure similar to Ubisoft’s new method with Assassin’s Creed is yet to be seen.

Limited Edition Call of Duty Black Ops PS3 Bundle Coming Soon

Well Call of Duty Black Ops is finally getting bundled with a game console. I can’t say that I didn’t see this coming, but I was almost sure that it would have been a 360 bundle. It isn’t a secret that Treyarch dropped the ball with the PS3 version, giving gamers a bad port of the Xbox 360 version. The game was so broken from the onset that many gamers signed a petition to get a refund.

The game is reportedly better after a dizzying number of patches and is apparently now playable. I’m sure this led Sony to capitalize and make a bundle deal. The bundle consists of a 160GB system, a copy of Black Ops, and what I’m assuming is a token for the First Strike content pack. Anyway, here’s what they had to say about the bundle:

“The choice to bundle Call of Duty: Black Ops and the First Strike Content Pack with the PlayStation 3 is perfect for anyone looking to bring home an incredible entertainment experience, that delivers endless hours of excitement through the games epic single player campaign, hugely popular multiplayer on PlayStation Network, or our fan favorite co-op Zombies mode,” said Mark Lamia, Studio Head of Treyarch. “And for those with 3D enabled televisions, the game’s Campaign, Multiplayer and Zombies experiences are seamlessly set up for stereoscopic 3D on the PS3 right out of the box.”

This could sell some more units, or this could simply be a waste of time for Sony. If people weren’t swayed by the Uncharted/Killzone bundle, I can’t imagine that they would really be tempted by this. But, I’ve been wrong before.

RipTen Review: Killzone 3

Long embittered by their expulsion from the lush planet of Vekta, the army of Helghan once again battles with the I.S.A. in the third installment of the Killzone franchise. Following on directly from the final moments of Killzone 2, the player will pilot mechs, spaceships, jetpacks and more as they slug it out with future-Nazi’s in a race to prevent the destruction of Earth.

Killzone’s visuals have again come to showcase the potential of the Playstation 3 Open GL library. Colours are stunning, animations are superb and you will witness eye-popping vistas and battles that will surpass just about everything on the market. Accompanying this visual feast are a host of amazing sound effects with rifle fire to rival current audio-leader; Battlefield: Bad Company 2. There are a number of disappointing features and some multiplayer options have been removed but overall, this is the game you’ve been waiting for.

As with each previous installment, the point of difference between Killzone and other shooters is built on the feel that’s communicated through movement. Reloading, jumping, running, every single action in the game has a physical weight that gives the series its trademark feel. Even the vehicle scenes have a perceptible lag to movement that will bring you to the edge of your seat. Reloading in particular will set your teeth on edge as your animation obscures the view ahead of you which really adds to the tension of each battle.

Much has been made of the shallow nature of the story and it does feature cardboard cut-out characters and a fairly straightforward narrative. The failure in this runs a little deeper. The Helghast are promoted as being ‘not quite human’ due to their adaptation to the planet’s vicious atmosphere and in pre-release material are noted as being faster, stronger and carrying a burning hatred for humanity. Why is it then that our only interaction with unmasked Helghan’s occurs through cut-scenes showing the political machinations of the Council, and these old men simply have rough skin with one guy having a breathing tube into his nose? I’m not buying it. Wrinkled brows and scar-faced men shouting doesn’t make your bad-guy any badder. More time spent on the cultural impact of their eviction by the ISA from Vektra could have really lent some steel to their motivations.

The story starts up literally minutes after the closing of the last game where an enraged Rico has slain Scolar Visari despite orders to capture him. Creating the new game in this time-space seems uninspired, why not deal with a stronger Helghan, hundreds of years in the future? Or an invasion of Earth itself? They still could have delivered the same incredible moments and in doing so evolved the series narrative, much like ODST and Reach have done for the Halo series. But instead it’s a race between the ISA (personified in Sev, Rico and Jammer) and a retaliatory strike against Earth from the Helghans (headed up by Chairman Stahl and Admiral Orlock). Despite the simple fare offered, the story does serve as a good foundation for a cinematic, roller-coaster experience that you’ll remember long after you’ve put your controller down.

After the opening levels and the aftermath of Killzone 2, we skip forward 6 months to where a thousand ISA soldiers are stranded but surviving on the Helghan surface. The game world here is quite similar to the Lost Planet series with strangely glowing plant-life and skittering creatures. Almost immediately you are thrust into the most absurd stealth section you’ll ever experience. Tasked with evading Helghast patrols, the player slinks through knee-high barely-there grass and headshots their way through a series of corridors. It becomes ludicrous when you walk past a patrol of five with two mechs and the head of the player is visible to the group standing a meter in front. Despite this oversight, the variance of gameplay options throughout the game is superb and there isn’t a single dull moment in the 5 to 7 hour campaign.

The mech-section is incredibly fun and the feeling of striding in that mechanical contraption surpasses games built solely around that type of gameplay. Equal to this are jet-packs that allow you limited flight, these too demonstrate a realistic weight and physics, everything is so wonderfully visceral; these suits are particularly fearsome when worn by the enemy and they appear as glowing red angels trying to decimate you and your squad.

There are many epic moments throughout Killzone 3, each of which has firmly supplanted the God of War series (my former benchmark) in delivering memorable moments. From the many vehicle sequences, to infiltrating a Helghan base (a visual feast right there), to the final culminating space-battle, there are so many air-punching moments I’ve been left without an ozone layer above my house. The standout moment was the MAWLR fight in the junkyard. For those of you yet to play the game, the MAWLR is a giant, and I mean GIANT, four-legged weapons platform. The sense of size is imparted wonderfully through lighting and scale against the battlefield backdrop. In a tense 15 minute sequence I started out on the ground, dodging incoming Helghast waves and missiles as I whittled away at the beast, and after surviving this I took to the air to cut off the beam-weapon attached to its side.

Slaying this beast on the Hard difficulty was supremely satisfying. All throughout the game this sense of accomplishment against overwhelming odds comes up again and again with that beautiful sense of scale really driving home the significance of your victory. It’s a shame then that the ending goes way too far with this sense of scale and is quite unbelievable (even the characters don’t emotionally connect with it). With the trite resurrection of the story’s main antagonist during the closing credits, it seems that Killzone 4 won’t be breaking any new ground either.

After completing the Singleplayer storyline I activated my bonus content and dove right into Multiplayer. As a huge fan and high-ranked player for Killzone 2 I was hoping to get the same experience with some tweaks, and oh boy have Guerrilla Games delivered. Warzone is back, the objective-based gameplay is as solid as ever as two teams of 12 players (down from KZ2′s 32 player matches) vie to complete a series of 7 objectives before the match ends.

New to the series is Operations which is a Bad Company 2 Rush style mode where the attackers are always ISA and they must complete key objectives to open up the map. One such objective tasks you with stealing a MAWLR so you must first open the gates, then operate the crane to carry the power core, then insert the core to steal the MAWLR. A pre-rendered cut-scene plays during each objective where the best performing player tags are shown above one of the soldiers in the scene. While a small element, it’s wonderfully involving and seeing your name appear reminds me of Black Op’s offline practice mode where names from your friends list are used to populate the match.

Ranking-up offers the same standard fare we’ve all come to expect, earn experience to unlock new weapons and abilities. Gone, however, is the ability to pick-n-mix your kit as each class has a limited set of weaponry. Perhaps this was done to combat the rocket-spam that dominated Killzone 2’s online matches, but with all weapons unlocked for the first 24 hours of play for limited edition purchases it was very clear that the rocket-wielding class will be heavily favoured once more.

In a very strange move, a large number of features present in Killzone 2’s multiplayer have been removed, most notably among them being spawn-grenades and the ability to form squads (and thereby spawn on the squad leader). There are spawn points that each side can activate but this has removed some of the free-flowing tactical elements that really gave the game pace. With a decent camp-point, spawn locations can be suppressed so the ability to escape and call in support would be very welcome. Also gone is the ability to wield your medic shock-paddles as weapons or resuscitate from distance, and again this serves only to slow the pace of play as well as send everyone back to a main spawnpoint encouraging further camping from the other team.

The maps that accompany your online experience are uniformly fantastic. Guerilla Games has again delivered an authentic Killzone experience as the settings mimic the singleplayer story. Almost every level contains moving parts and its own sound effects that create an authentic space in which to experience combat. Special mention must be made of the Turbine Concourse level which has a massive Petrusite warp-drive anchored in the middle and throughout each match it will power up with the most ungodly and frightening sound effect I’ve ever heard in gaming. Other developers would do well to note this greater level of animation, in a genre in danger of becoming stale, it’s innovations like this that get noticed by the p(l)aying public.

Killzone 3 offers a rewarding singleplayer experience and a lasting but slightly derivative multiplayer component. By ramping up the set-piece battles to a massive scale and giving the player control of brutal weaponry, you will feel involved in the fight like never before… which fortunately makes up for the lacklustre and weak storyline that can act as an anchor on the gameplay.

Multiplayer has been pared back to deliver a slightly CoD-like run and gun experience, but the inclusion of vehicles and jetpacks and the excellent new Operations mode makes this a lasting proposition. Brilliant audio and utterly stunning graphics combine with iconic imagery to wrap-up the package and make this a must-buy for owners of the Playstation 3.

Killzone 3 was released February 23rd in North America for a retail price of $59.99. The reviewer purchased a copy of the ‘Helghast Edition’ and did an unboxing video which you can view below. Singleplayer was played til completion and multiplayer was played til the reviewer felt they understood the mechanics in-depth.

Happy Valentine’s Day From Scholar Viscari

I always felt that Scholar Viscari was misunderstood. Sure he was the founder of the Helghan Empire, ruler of the Helghast and enemy #1 of the Killzone series. Often compared to Hilter unfairly, he was seen as a delusional, ambitious and violent warlord, uniting Helghan through charisma. He ruled Helghan with an iron fist and terrorized Vekta.

But how bad can the man be, I mean he sent out Valentine’s Day Cards this year? While Ripten didn’t make his Valentine’s Day list (It’s Ok Guerrilla Games, but don’t forget us next year) our friends at PlayStation LifeStyle recieved Viscari’s package of love.

To my surprise, I was greeted by a delivery man this fine morning of February the 14th. A very special someone was asking me to be their Valentine. A little gift of Killzone 3 chocolate bars sweetened the thoughtful gesture, but the picture of himself was what really got me blushing…

Cosplay Spotlight: The Helghast (Killzone)

Call them space Nazis, call them evil fascist oppressors of freedom – but one thing is for sure - The Helghast are bad ass. With the release of Killzone 3 fast approaching, we only thought it fitting to find some men and women who could step into the evil cosplay combat boots of Killzone’s iconic evil doers.

First up, we’ve got this Helghast Tactician costume desgined and being worn by Italian Cosplayer {Sh[I]vA} (yes, there’s a lady in that suit) Note the awesome work on the helmet and rifle.

Her boyfriend (why do all the cool chicks have boyfriends?) Cosplayed as a Helghast sniper and the work on his helmet and rifle are equally impressive.

What A Cute Couple

Better yet, these two showed off their costumes at a convention late last year. Enjoy this short video and many more pictures of {Sh[I]vA}’s costume at the end of the article.

Now, while we usually prefer home-grown cosplay – sometimes the best costumes are corporate. To promote Killzone, Sony sent out these two awesome Helghast troopers to terrorize the press and public at events big and small.

The detail on these costumes is amazing from head to toe – and you can tell that Sony spent a lot of time going back and forth with Guerrilla making sure these guys looked authentic.

Other than these fine examples, there is not much other Helghast cosplay to be found. Mainly because it is such a difficult costume to recreate. From the armor, to the helmets, to the glowing goggles – this is not a costume just any old cosplayer can create. PlayStation NGP (PSP2) To Get Uncharted, Killzone, Resistance Among Others

The PSP2 (NGP) has been announced and so have a number of familiar names – including the ever popular Uncharted. Games shown demoed or revealed so far at the PlayStation Meeting 2011 in Tokyo include handheld versions of Uncharted, Killzone, WipeOut, Resistance, LittleBigPlanet, Hot Shots Golf, Hustle Kings and Monster Hunter.

It was not made clear whether these are new games or ports of existing PS3 titles

In other great news – PSP digital download titles will be compatible with the NGP.

Killzone 3 Split-Screen Co-Op Confirmed by Guerilla

Often criticized for it’s lack of co-op play in Killzone 2, Guerrilla has confirmed that Killzone 3 will have co-op play – including split-screen co-op.

In an interview with 1UP, studio manager Herman Hulst pointed to split-screen co-op as an example of how much what could be done with the PlayStation 3:

“We found a lot of power after we completed Killzone 2. Just to give you an example on the graphics side: we pulled a level from Killzone 2 into the Killzone 3 engine and it ran at 50 percent. 50% is impressive no matter how you look at it. Could this explanation simply be a way to explain that the game will look just as with split-screen? The image provided looks pretty damn good albeit a bit washed out.

There has been no mention of co-op online multiplayer, but then again is it really necessary. Obviously the move to a co-op campaign, especially on with split-screen, is no doubt great news to any fan of the series.

New Multiplayer Footage from Killzone 3

I’m glad we’re now getting good looks at Killzone 3, because it’s the one thing I’ll miss when I don’t have access to my PS3 in a month’s time. Sony just dropped a new look at the multiplayer from Killzone 3, which gives us a great impression of something kind-of-new being added to the multiplayer modes- vehicles!

I know some people were annoyed at the lack of transport in Killzone 2, but it looks as though Guerilla has not only added vehicles to the game, but made it so multiplayer matches aren’t heavily unbalanced with them. Of course, I can’t make any actual judgments until the game drops in February of next year, but that doesn’t mean I’m not absolutely pumped to see even more from it.

Greenberg: Halo 3 Outsold Several Top Sony Exclusives, Combined

I’ve never been able to get into the Halo series myself, not to say that I think it’s bad, I’ve just never got around to falling in love with it. However, examining some recent NPD data makes it easy to see that I’m certainly the minority.

According to a recent tweet by Aaron Greenberg, Microsoft’s Xbox Product Director, the third installment of Bungies popular Halo franchise gobbled up the collective efforts of some of Sony’s most highly touted console exclusives:

“Just in from research team (NPD),” Greenberg wrote in the Twitter update, “Halo 3 has outsold Resistance 1 + 2, Uncharted 1+2, Killzone 2 and God of War III COMBINED….wow.”

It’s worth mentioning that even if the NPD data is spot on, Halo 3 has had nearly 3 years to build these numbers, while titles such as God of War III (released March 2010), Uncharted 2 (released October 2009), and Killzone 2 (released February 2009) are still fairly recent editions to the gaming market. None the less, this is an impressive notch in the heavily armored belt that is Halo.

Sony Officially Announces Killzone 3, Stereoscopic 3D Gaming With Jet Packs

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) has issued a press release today, solidifying what most of us already knew. Killzone 3 is officially on the clock, and the latest iteration is primed to deliver a Stereoscopic 3D gaming experience.

As far as the story goes, the third installment of the franchise picks up where the sequel left off, and according to SCEE Content Producer, James Gallagher (who recently visited the team at Guerrilla Games for some hands-on Killzone 3 access), it’s a “much grander experience in terms of scale and ambition” with “more variety, more enemy types, massive environments and a broader vision of the planet Helghan and its many terrains.”

New gameplay elements include objects like “jet packs”, which Gallagher compares to an “exaggerated jump” ability. He goes on to mention the possibility of “platforming and aerial combat.”

Although Guerilla Game’s love child has been delayed until 2009, most likely to avoid big name titles like Resistance 2 and Gears of War 2, SCEE’s Playstation day brought us the rare treat of real Killzone 2 gameplay footage.

Killzone 2 Releasing February 2009

Though we will get juicy new info and possibly footage of Killzone 2 today, Sony’s Playstation Day also brings the sad news that Killzone 2′s release has been pushed forward into 2009.

David Reeves, who is currently presenting to a crowd of hungry journalists, has revealed that Killzone 2 will not release until February of next year. At least, that’s the release date for Europe.

The thought that Resistance 2 and Killzone 2 would compete was always worrying, but it’s now amusing to think that Insomniac will have put out three Playstation 3 games by the time Guerilla release their first.

6th May Big Playstation Day: Killzone 2, Resistance 2, Mirror’s Edge and More

Playstation Day. Tomorrow. London. Be there or be round. Sadly we weren’t invited, but much of the top tier European press will be getting a lucky look at Playstation’s exclusive 2008 titles. Resistance 2 is confirmed, and the slight promise of a new Killzone 2 demo should make tomorrow a day to remember.

The potential was always there for a storm, with Sony’s new worldwide president Kaz Hirai flying into the capital to give a keynote speech. Appearances of Playstation Home, Play TV and even LittleBigPlanet are expected, but further surprises might be waiting.

Insomniac have confirmed the first playable demo of Resistance 2, but only excited press previews and screenshots will exit closed doors. The first gameplay footage will have to wait until June 13th. However, everything appears to be set for Resistance 2 to impress tomorrow, as expressed by Insomniac’s James Stevenson on Neogaf:

We are off to dinner, but rehearsals went well, Resistance 2 is up and running on its three kiosks and we had a nice game going with the boys in Burbank.

It’s Insomniac’s podcast host who also lifts the curtains on a possible Killzone 2 showing. In response to a pessimistic neogaffer who said Killzone 2 won’t make an appearance tomorrow, James Stevenson simply says:

Wrong.

Consider us intrigued. So what do we get out of all this? Well, tomorrow will see an early European Playstation Store update, with a HAZE demo at top billing. That’s not all. Two more demo’s, The Bourne Conspiracy and Race Driver: GRid, will take their place on the store this Thursday, along with footage from tomorrow’s event. Interest rising…
