The Making of Tomb Raider’s Epic “Turning Point” Trailer (Video)

Little more than a month ago, we bore witness to the epic “turning point” trailer that truly introduced the word to Crystal Dynamics new Lara Croft. It was one hell of a trailer that showcased not only the gritty new approach to the franchise, but also the always first rate CG direction at Square Enix.

In the following video, the team behind the epic trailer detail just how it was made and how it all came together:

Epic indeed. Square has been pushing the envelope in CG trailers for years, and it doesn’t appear that they intend to slow down anytime soon.

New Tomb Raider Trailer Highlights Grittier, More Realistic Lara Croft

Remember that Tomb Raider reboot that was slated to come out? With all the hype and announcements surrounding E3, I had certainly forgot that the new title was even being developed much less being touted by Square Enix at E3.

The new trailer entitled “Turning Point” is meant to show how Lara Croft became the Tomb Raider that we all know and love. Survivors aren’t born they’re made.

Armed with only the raw instincts and physical ability to push beyond the limits of human endurance, TOMB RAIDER delivers an intense and gritty story into the origins of Lara Croft and her ascent from a frightened young woman to a hardened survivor.

RipTen Review: Tomb Raider Trilogy (PS3)

When asked who one of videogames greatest heroines is, Lara Croft is always one of the first names that comes to mind. Sexy, intelligent, and a successful explorer – Lara has always had something appealing for both genders. While the series has certainly had excellent entries as well the as the occasional stinker; it’s always hard to bet against Lara.

The Tomb Raider Trilogy is an especially attractive outing featuring three of Lara’s more recent romps around the world: Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld, each of which have been updated to high definition with the added bonus of developer diaries, a PlayStation Home outfit, and a few other goodies. Extras aside, the real meat of the bundle is playing through the evolution of a series that has broken free from a slump. While not much has been changed aside from the visuals, Trilogy is still a great bundle for newcomers to catch up on Lara’s pursuits, especially that of her mother.

Trilogy shines most brightly in Underworld, an entry into the series that proudly displays how far gameplay and storytelling has come since Legend, which is the weakest out of the three games. With the updates, Underworld is also pretty damn attractive. Following in a close 2nd, Anniversary also benefits greatly from the update. However, not even the update could hide the age of Legend which is largely unattractive. Fortunately, if you start with Legend and end with Underworld you’ll be treated to a lovely evolution of the series. However, you won’t find absolute disappointment if you play them in reverse order.

If you’re unfamiliar with Tomb Raider, the game essentially operates like a less-linear version of Uncharted, with a bigger emphasis on environmental puzzles and exploration. Pair that with a bit of gun-play, quick-time events and storytelling derived from Indiana Jones and you’ve got Lara Croft in a nutshell. Each game follows that formula fairly closely, with Underworld straying furthest from that formula with a larger variety of unique environments, again, another reason Underworld is the high point of the package.

Underworld is a strong showing, with Lara touting new abilities, more varied and attractive landscapes and a much more involved narrative. The combat is also played out best here, with Legend and Anniversary looking mighty weak in comparison. Lara’s new “adrenaline” ability slows everything to a crawl in a bullet-timey fashion, allowing Lara to perforate the worst of them. Controlling Lara is a much easier affair, whereas the other two games in the collection have some pretty wonky controls that can quickly instill some frustration.

Delving into personal preference, Anniversary gets all my love. Essentially a remake of Lara’s very first adventure, Anniversary follows Lara as she pursues an artifact known as the Scion, a treasure that consistently eluded her. The story that is there is entertaining, but the real value of the game lies in the difference between it and its original. Anniversary at the time of release, was triumphant return to form for Croft, even though it was only but a remake. It came across as more than just a remake, but an absolute labor of love.

While some of the package is slightly antiquated, the updates to each visually at least helps your eyes swallow the games a tad bit better. Underworld is easily the strongest showing, with the series’ formula culminating in one of the most varied adventures Lara’s taken part in. The biggest issue with Underworld in the compilation is that some, especially most fans have probably played the game pretty recently and it still held up visually, so the update doesn’t change a ton. Oh, and Legend doesn’t hold up particularly well, so I encourage people who pick up this package to start there and work your way up.

You know what would have really backed the $39.99 price on Trilogy? The inclusion of Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light. Of all the things not to include in this package, it had to be the well-received top-down adventure game released just last year. If that had been thrown in as an extra, I’d be telling you to drop everything and pick up Trilogy.

Tomb Raider Trilogy, despite Legend and Anniversary beginning to show signs of their aged gameplay, is a strong collection. You get the added benefit of being able to check out the old model of Lara Croft before she receives her reboot with Crystal Dynamics fresh take on the series, Tomb Raider. To fans, I say run out and pick up Trilogy and you probably won’t regret it for a second. For those who haven’t had the pleasure of playing these games in the time that they had been released, you’re still getting a pretty good deal for $40. 3 platinum trophies, 30-ish hours of gameplay, and HD updates to boot drives a pretty hard bargain. Gents, you get to watch an attractive, intelligent woman kick ass. Ladies, you get to watch an attractive, intelligent woman kick ass. There truly is a little something in Tomb Raider Trilogy for everyone.

Tomb Raider Trilogy was developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix. It was released on PS3 for $39.99 USD on March 22, 2011. A copy was provided by the publisher for the purposes of review. Garrett has a thing for Lara. Then again, who doesn’t?

RipTen’s Guide to Becoming a Typical Video Game Protagonist (For Ladies)

At some point, we’ve all wanted to be that bad ass character in a video game. After all, who wouldn’t want to perform death-defying stunts, kill people in exotic locations, and get the love interest at the end of it all? A few weeks ago we spelled it out for the Guys, tonight it’s ladies night!

1. Have an accent

The sexiest type of women in video games like Miranda Lawson and Lara Croft are such sex icons for gamers because of their lovely accents. Why listen to a plain old boring American accent when you can listen to a sexy British or Australian woman kicking ass and taking names?

2. Tolerate any dirty jokes that come your way – And there will be dirty jokes.

Just ignore how obviously perverted the guy is. Pretend that he’s not speaking in a high pitched voice and making disturbing sexual references. If you want to get anywhere in this industry, we all have to make sacrifices and yours will be your dignity and tolerance to not hit stupid people. (men)

3. Have a severe allergy to clothing.

You can wear clothing for 2-5 minutes, but afterwards, we better see some skin other than your face and fingers, dammit! Get a sleeve torn, have a wild animal rip your pants to shreds; just lose some clothing. And don’t even think about changing clothes during loading screens, missy, because they’ll just get ripped to shreds, too.

4. Get some tig-ole bitties.

Yes, you read that right. This is actually the first thing (things) you’ll need before you consider being a female lead because otherwise, you’re screwed. After all, who doesn’t love the super curvy ladies like Tifa, Cammy, or any of the Dead or Alive Girls? Cs to Gs will get you the job quicker, and if they’re smaller than that, either stuff your bra, wear tight clothes that make them look twice as big, or rob a bank and use the money to get yourself an operation. Or, if you’re covered on top…

5. Have a nice, finely sculpted rear.

If we’re gonna be staring at it for who knows how many hours, it may as well look nice. If you don’t know how it’s supposed to look, grab Mass Effect 2 or Halo: Reach, look at the butts of Miranda Lawson and Kat, and you’ll have a good idea of how it’s supposed to look. However, if you’ve got a butterface and no chesticles worth pointing out, your bum (or lack thereof) will be the reason your sequel is being sold at Gamestop for $5 three weeks after release.

6. Unlockable costumes.

You will have every male gamer killing each other to buy your game. The skimpier, the better. Also, don’t make them too hard to unlock. In fact – they should unlock everytime you get a win or make it to the next level . . . yeah. Sold.

7. Prior to release, have some sexy models portray you at conventions.

Places like E3, the Comic Cons and TGS would be good places to start, since chances are there’ll be someone dressing up as you anyway. If it’s possible, get the model to wear the most form-fitting clothes you can find for her. Bonus points if you can get her to do some sexy posing. Once you’ve got a real following – you may even want to branch out and get sexy at the GDC and CES – you know those suits will love it.

So, there you have it. Follow these 7 easy steps and you’ll be well on your way to becoming the video game leading lady of your dreams!!

New Tomb Raider Screens Get Down and Dirty

As you should know by now, the Tomb Raider franchise is getting a reboot. Not only that, but it features a younger Lara Croft before she became the wealthy globe trotting heroine we all know.

Well, today we’ve got some brand new screens that show just how hard it will be for lady Croft to get her adventures started.

Game Informer has got the exclusive preview next month – but they were nice enough to release some screens for the rest of us eager gamers – enjoy:

Yeah, I know – they look amazing. I wasn’t too excited before, but Lara and this game are lookin’ good!!

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light Hits iPhone

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light hit XBLA and PSN as one of the most highly praised downloadable titles in recent history. The game was a huge departure from the series norm, and Lara is again exploring new territory – this time landing on all iOS devices.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light has apparently been changed very little in the transition, with the biggest change being controls optimized for the touch screen. The stellar co-op is still there, as is the isometric viewpoint.

“We’re thrilled to bring the LARA CROFT AND THE GUARDIAN OF LIGHT App to iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users,” said Darrell Gallagher, General Manager of Crystal Dynamics. “The controls have been optimized to take advantage of these amazing devices and the graphics are absolutely stunning.”

The app will cost $6.99 on iPhone and $9.99 on iPad – well worth the price if you ask us. What are you waiting for?

New Tomb Raider Revealed – Will Be A Reboot

It looks as if Crystal Dynamics will be rebooting the Tomb Raider franchise and diving into the origins of Lara Croft.

January’s cover of Game Informer has been revealed and with it, the unveiling of a new Tomb Raider.

They had this to say:

In this new adventure – simply titled Tomb Raider – a younger and inexperienced Lara Croft must endure both physical and emotional trauma to survive.

Judging from the image, we can be certain of a few things, Lara will be hot and she will carry a bow.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light Gets Online Co-op & Limited Time Free DLC October 27th

If you’re a fan of the Crystal Dynamics’ Lara Croft cooperative action-adventure game making its way around the Xbox LIVE Arcade universe (and you should be), you’ll be happy to hear that tomorrow will bring a pretty sweet update in the form of an online co-op mode.

And if solving the current offering of tomb related puzzles with your online buddy isn’t exciting enough, you’ll also be able to get your hands on some brand new content via a DLC titled “All the Trappings.” Last but not least, if you act quickly (within the first 30 days of release) you’ll be able to pick up the first DLC installment absolutely free.

“We’re delighted the Online Co-op is ready and going live – as a thank you to the patient Xbox gamers, and for a limited time only we will be giving away our first DLC pack for free. Download it, have a go and while you’re there try the online co-op mode, it’s great fun,” said Darrell Gallagher, General Manager of Crystal Dynamics.

I’m not sure about you, but a bag full of pre-Halloween candy and some free DLC sounds like a pretty good time.

RipTen Review: Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light (XBLA)

Square-Enix and Crystal Dynamics’ most recent entry into the Tomb Raider franchise is a significant departure for the series; even the name has changed from Tomb Raider to Lara Croft. Fans of the series will notice the change the instant the title boots up, with a menu screen styled after a graphic novel. The game retains that graphic novel feel throughout.

This game is beautiful. The environments are alive with motion, every level has a rich backdrop. You’ll travel from underground tombs, to ancient swamps, to lava-filled caverns, and each one has a unique style. Fire, water, and magic effects are impressive, and fill the screen with no slowdown or choppy framerate. Killing enemies provides you with a gratifying explosion of light, and by the end of the game 10+ enemies on-screen at a time isn’t unusual. Check out the gameplay video below to see what I’m talking about (SPOILER ALERT):

The story, on the other hand, is easily forgettable. Really, it’s just an excuse to have Lara crawling through a temple fighting a bunch of supernatural baddies. You’re chasing some ancient, evil Aztec God, but other than yelling about how you’re going to die in the occasional cutscene, he really does very little. Really, though, it doesn’t seem to matter. Playing as Lara Croft will be enough for most gamers in this case, and that’s ok.

The isometric style view lends a completely different feel to the game than previous Tomb Raiders, but it works and works well. The puzzles are designed to fit into the view, there’s never any annoying point where you can’t see what you need to see. The camera also aids in the more casual feel of the game, as it’s much easier to see around you and gaps are easier to judge. The viewpoint actually reminded me a lot of dungeon crawlers like Gauntlet or Diablo 2, a feeling that is backed up by the overall style of the game. Lara can level up, which is accomplished through collectibles. Through various side rooms, you’ll get access to artifacts that boost attributes. You can only have 2 of them equipped at a time, so choosing which artifacts to use can be very strategic.

Puzzles in Co-op are inventive as well

The weapons in Guardian of Light are fun to use. They vary from Lara’s trusty dual pistols to a a chain gun. Let me say that again: a CHAIN GUN. And yes, mowing enemies down with a chain gun is incredibly fun. Ammo is handled well in the game; there are primary weapons (Lara’s pistols and this divine spear thing) and secondary weapons. Primary weapons have unlimited ammo, while secondaries have a blue bar next to Lara’s health. All secondary weapons pull from the same ammo, so ammo management really is a non-issue. Lara also has bombs, which are unlimited and very useful in combat. One move I found particularly useful was to use the roll ability through a crowd of enemies and drop a bomb in the middle of them, then detonate the bomb. This is a great crowd buster, but never felt overpowered.

Because of the different viewpoint, controlling Lara is completely new. The left stick is used to control movement, while the right stick aims. It takes a little getting used to, but after about five minutes you’ll be running around and dodging monsters with ease. There’s a bit of an aim-assist as well, so not having a precise targeting system is fine. Lara moves from one action to the next fluidly and with the grace expected of the acrobatic heroine. I never had any point in the game where the controls seemed to get in the way at all, and that’s how a game is supposed to be.

This Lara Croft is focused a bit more on action than puzzles. There are still plenty of puzzles, but they are fairly quick and easy to solve. Puzzle design is well-done and varied, though, so each one feels fresh and new. The game changes pace often, and every few minutes you’ll find yourself surrounded by enemies in an epic battle. Each enemy has a different power, and a different way to fight them. Each battle was exciting and new.

In the end, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is a great game, and definitely worth a playthrough. It’s easily got 10+ hours of gameplay, and you’ll find that it’s addictive. In addition, on September 28th Crystal Dynamics is releasing a patch for online co-op, which will extend the play value even more. While reminiscent of previous Tomb Raider titles, Guardian of Light is a lighter, leaner game. I actually had the feeling that the game would not be completely out of place in an arcade. I’d recommend this game to any fan of the series, as well as newcomers to Lara Croft.

Lara Croft & the Guardian of Light Launching Without Online Co-Op

I think the two Summer of Arcade games that I’m most excited about are Monday Night Combat and Lara Croft & The Guardian of Light. Getting a TF2-style shooter on XBLA seems like a terrific idea, but getting an isometric, online co-op enabled Lara Croft game seems too good to be true. Oh, did I say online co-op enabled? I meant “local and local only for a month enabled”. Just a typo- the keys are right next to each other and whatnot.

If you’re looking forward to blasting through Guardian of Light with a buddy online, then you’re going to have to wait until September 28th, coincidentally the same day the PS3 version launches. Crystal Dynamics plans to patch online co-operative play into the game that day, as it seems as though it won’t be ready for launch.

I’m conflicted on this news; on the one hand, not having to deal with a delay on the game is great, but I have a feeling that online co-op is what will make this game the most fun. I guess we’ll have to find out ourselves whether or not we’re willing to wait for a patch when the game launches on Xbox Live Arcade on August 18th. [Destructoid]

Girls in Games: Why Aren’t There More Female Leads?

Name a recent game that featured a female lead. In the last year, there’s been Bayonnetta. And I think Wet was released in the last year too. Can’t come up with anything else? That’s because female leads are few and far between in games; and if large gaming companies have their way, it’s likely to stay that way. For instance, Activision hasn’t had a female lead character in a game that wasn’t licensed since 2005.

Gaming companies tend to look to focus groups and top selling games to make decisions about what they will support. Publishers put lots of money into developing a game, and they want to be sure to get their costs back. When all the top selling games feature a male lead, it seems to be a safer bet to go with a male lead. In focus groups, male leads tend to do better as well; but focus groups can be skewed, and the participants may have preconceived notions about video games. Relying heavily on focus groups can be a mistake when it gets in the way of creative game design.

Despite the focus groups, it seems that gamers tend to respond positively to female heroines. Just think of Lara Croft or Samus Aran. Both are strong female leads and both are wildly popular franchises. Gamers, male and female, don’t seem to have any trouble identifying with a female character. In an unofficial twitter poll of gamers, most said they don’t mind the main character’s gender, as long as it ‘fits the story’. Many gamers, male and female, even expressed a desire for more female leads, provided the character was a real woman and not a 7th-grader’s fantasy.

It would seem, then, that perhaps gaming companies are looking at an effect as a cause. The top video games being played right now feature male leads, this is true. However, would those games be any less appealing if they had female heroines? Would Assassin’s Creed be less appealing if the character was female? Almost all blockbuster games are created with male leads, and only smaller fringe titles tend to feature a female lead. Would Halo: Reach be any less anticipated if it featured a female Spartan?

The newest chapter of the Tomb Raider Franchise, as well as the Metroid both come out this month. I’m looking forward to both of those titles, and the fact that they feature female leads is actually refreshing. How do you feel about leading ladies in gaming? Let us know in the following poll:

E310 Preview: Lara Croft: Guardian of Light, The Real Tomb Raider

Lara Croft: Guardian of Light is not a Tomb Raider game, and although it does share a protagonist with the series, the differences outnumber the similarities.

Firstly, co-op is available on the new game. The way the characters interact with each other is similar to Gauntlet, especially with the changes that have been made for the perspective of the game.

It almost felt like I was playing an RTS when controlling Lara as opposed to the normal close range third-person gameplay that the typical Tomb Raiders have had. Not only does this result in better puzzles, but it makes the game feel more like tomb raiding. I actually think it’s ironic that this one is named after the main character, since it focuses more on tomb raiding than the games named for it.

Being far away from Lara makes it easier to see the environments as well, and is better for puzzle-solving and easier to tell exactly where to go. The environments are more detailed, and even with an early build of the game, it was much more impressive than the Tomb Raider games.

Lara Croft: Guardian of Light will be released later this year on the XBOX LIVE Arcade, PlayStation Network, and PC.

Kim Kardashian In Talks To Do WHAT?!

A little over a month ago, one of the worst environmental crises in US history when an oil rig exploded and began to leak gallons and gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. In less than 50 days, the oil has covered the area of multiple US states, and is universally accepted to be one of the, if not the, biggest tragedies of the year. However, in light of what I’m about to break to you, BP’s oil spill could actually become a runner-up* to the worst tragedy of the year.

And what tragedy am I talking about? Kim Kardashian replacing Angelina Jolie in the next Tomb Raider film. Now, I think we can all agree that the Tomb Raider series hasn’t exactly produced the Citizen Kane of our generation, but I never thought they’d think bringing in the buxom brunette from Keeping Up Wtth The Kardashians would make the series better. Of course, if this report holds true, then “better” might not exactly be what they’re going for.

Kim is wanted to play a far more comic-strip version of Lara which would be shot in 3-D and aimed at a teen audience.

I made a pie graph of the parts of that sentence I like, where red represents parts I like, and blue represents parts I do not like.

*Editor’s note: I joke, but what’s currently going on in the Gulf of Mexico is absolutely gut-wrenching and terrible. Of course I don’t truly think that Kim Kardashian being cast as the lead in Tomb Raider is a disaster on the level of BP’s oil spill, but unless Kim Kardashian is actually a closet thespian, I think it’s safe to say that this isn’t exactly a great idea. Of course, that’s just my opinion, and not the opinion of my employers or anyone else that writes for Ripten blah blah blah copyright 2010. By the way, it is surprisingly difficult to find a SFW photograph of Kim Kardashian. I am just saying.

Foreign Pringles Commercial Proves Video Games Are More Fun with Crunch and Nudity

In a contrasting string of commercials, Pringles stack their chip against bagged brand competitors. The premise is simple — “not every chip gets you to the crunch.”

And as you’ll see in the Silent Hill video game scenario below, when you finally do get to the “crunch”, a strip teasing Lara Croft will be waiting. The “squelching” non-crunch counterpart is, well, not as entertaining. Enjoy.

A while back there was a rumor making its way around the internet saying that Megan Fox may play Lara Croft in the next Tomb Raider movie, as it was an origin story that called for a younger actress. This rumor finally made its way to Angelina Jolie and she is none too pleased.

It seems Jolie thinks that Fox steals a lot of things from her, like her style and her tattoos. I don’t think that she has any valid reason to be upset, as she couldn’t play Lara Croft in an origin story anyway. Why does she even give a crap?
