Legendary Pictures Scores Rights to Mass Effect: The Movie

The hounds of Hollywood hunger for fresh meat and even fresher alliterations as the execs at Legendary Pictures consider Mass Effect for a silver screen translation. Mark Protosevich (“I Am Legend,” “Thor”) has been commissioned to draft a screenplay.

It comes as no surprise that Electronic Arts would offer up the rights to this kind of project. I personally believe that the ME universe is rich enough to rival the vastness of Star Wars. It would need a much larger fandom to accomplish this, but the potential is there. The issue I have is with EA’s intention to craft a film around Commander Shepard, a character with no static personality or history. Pat O’Brien, VP of EA, seems to think it’s an excellent idea.

“The mission of EA Entertainment is to take key EA properties and find additional ways to bring these properties to people. We can’t think of a better fit than Mass Effect and we couldn’t be more excited to bring Commander Shepard’s adventures to the silver screen.”

First of all, my Shepard was a chick. She also wore a bright purple exo-suit and I doubt that Legendary will hear my pleas to make this canon. How can you make a motion picture about a character that’s different for every player? Why not come up with an original plot within the universe? You know, something that keeps our personal Shepards… well… personal?

Then there’s the ever-present fear of the Uwe Boll treatment. There’s still a stigma surrounding video game movies and the current track record doesn’t really provide any evidence of improvement.

Mark my words, EA. If you screw this up for me, you will the rue the day and you will rue it hard.

Ripten’s Gears of War Movie Poster Fan Art

So yeah, I was bored and the lack of news coming over the wire convinced me to pop open Adobe Photoshop and mess around for a while. One thing lead to another, and a few hours later I ended up with my own little Gears of War Movie poster. Dan Landis added his two cents on the casting over Skype.

Yes, we know that Kilmer is currently a bit on the heavy side, and Batista may not be the best actor on the face of the planet, but we figured what the fuck — they sure as hell look the part. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Lester “Terry Tate” Speight were obvious choices. To be perfectly clear, the Gears of War movie has NOT been officially cast yet, these are merely our “shooting the shit” selections.

Gears of Acquirement: Legendary Pictures in Talks to Buy Epic Games?

The word on the Locust infested streets of Sera is that Legendary Pictures is looking to purchase Epic Games. No clue as to whether or not the companies would change their name, but they might as well go for “Uber,” I can’t really think of any thing else that tops Epic or Legendary (Artifact perhaps?)

The two studios have been working closely with each other on the film adaptation of Gears of War, and apparently have bonded over a love of Chainsaw Bayonets, leading to speculation that the purchase is at the very least being discussed seriously.

Legendary Pictures’ chairman Thomas Tull has shown interest in video games before, as he was co-founder of publisher Brass Entertainment, but subsequently left, as the company was focused on Hollywood licensed productions, and we all know how those tend to go.

So perhaps Tull has gotten a taste for gaming and is looking for a real company to get involved with. He could certainly do much worse than Epic, which owns the Gears of War franchise and the Unreal Engine.

Legendary offered no comment but Epic had some nice things to say about Legendary, which at least indicates they play well together, so getting hitched isn’t totally out of the question.

“We have publicly announced that Epic and Legendary are partnering on the “Gears of War” movie. We’re very excited about that project and have the highest regard for Thomas Tull and his organization,” said a spokesperson for Epic.

The pairing would provide Epic with whole helluva lotta money, and Legendary would get an epic game studio (sorry, couldn’t resist.)

WOW Movie Details Surface At BlizzCon ’07

A spirited panel announced an upcoming WOW movie at this years BlizzCon causing hundreds of keyboards to hit the ground in unison. This will mark the first movie for Blizzard and it has been long in the making, five years long to be exact.

The partnership between Blizzard and Legendary Pictures drew cheers from the crowd, as it very well should have being that this is the same studio that just finished the blockbusters 300 and Batman Begins.

Legendary Pictures’ CEO Thomas Tull wanted to make it clear to fans that their goal was to make an epic film not a video game movie. He compared the quest they were embarking on to the masterful work of Peter Jackson on Lord of the Rings.

While no decisions having been made on a cast or director the parties announced an estimate of $100 million for production and hope to have the film ready for a 2009 release.
