LittleBigPlanet Karting Announced, First Promo Image Surfaces

Yesterday, Sony announced a LittleBigPlanet Racing game at a Destination PlayStation event. Together with this announcement was a mention of a PS Move steering wheel peripheral.

Since then, it has been discovered the official name of the game to be LittleBigPlanet Karting, thanks to a leaked promotional image shown below.

It has been reported that the game will support 3D and a PS Vita version is not in the works.

Toy Story DLC Coming To LittleBigPlanet

Media Molecule has revealed the latest downloadable content for LittleBigPlanet 2. Buzz-Buzz-Buzz Lightyear to the rescue! Yup, you guessed it, Toy Story is coming to LittleBigPlanet.

Sony’s Welcome Back Program Helps Boost PS3 Sales

The 2011 PSN outage was a dark day for Sony gamers and many feared the PS3 would never recover. Sony wised up and realized giving free games and a month of PS Plus would help and created the Welcome Back Program. How successful was this program in “rekindling the activity and trust” of PSN users? According to a report by EEDAR’s Jesse Divinch, very successful:

“While it may initially appear that the increase in downloads were due to the free offerings, a deeper analysis indicates otherwise, with the four Welcome Back titles removed, users indicated 15 percent of their purchases in June 2011 were PlayStation Network digital titles, compared to 13 percent in March. This positive trend… lends to the notion that consumers can be forgiving if a company is sincere and authentic with its consumers.”

During the program all four titles offered as part of the US Welcome Back package ranked among the top 25 acquired titles during the first three weeks of the program and InFAMOUS ranked as June 2011’s with LittleBigPlanet landing in 5th place. Moreover, 17% of IGN users indicated they acquired a PSN digital title in June 2011, which is up from 13% in March 2011 before Sony was forced to bring down the PSN due to hackers.

“Among users claiming title acquisition in June 2011, the PlayStation 3 had a 44% share among 7th generation home consoles, up from 40% prior to the PlayStation Network outage. As with the previous analysis, removing the four Welcome Back titles resulted in a 1% increase in market share from March 2011. While this increase in market share is small, the fact that the PlayStation 3 market share increased both with and without the free offerings indicates that the Welcome Back Program likely boosted sales of other paid content, specifically those available either exclusively through download or those that had a physical or digital purchase options,”

Final Fantasy VII Costumes Finally Coming To LittleBigPlanet

The long awaited Final Fantasy VII Costumes are finally making their way onto LittleBigPlanet 2.

Media Molecule may be stepping away from LittleBigPlanet, but they’re still bringing the content. First revealed at the Tokyo Game Show in 2008 Final Fantasy VII’s Sephiroth costume was announced along side Solid Snake. Now three years later Sephiroth is finally making his way into the LBP universe and he’s bringing some not so good friends.

The Playstation Blog reveled that on July 13th Sephiroth, Cloud, Tifa, Aeris, and of course Sephiroth will be available at $1.99 each for download. Alternatively you can purchase the Final Fantasy Costume pack with all the mentioned costumes for $5.99. If you purchase the pack you will also be granted a bonus Vincent Valentine costume (Only available through the bundle).

Other mentioned releases were Infamous 2, Toy Story, and Killzone 3 packs. To end this wonderful piece of news, I present you with the new and improved Sephiroth!

Is Media Molecule Really Stepping Away From LittleBigPlanet?

According to a recent Tweet, Media Molecule will be stepping away from the LittleBigPlanet franchise.

Edge quoted studio director Siobhan Reddy saying that:

The future of LittleBigPlanet at this point is currently unknown, but it will be interesting to see what Media Molecule has plans for in the future. Just a few days ago Media Molecule posted a job listing for a graphics programer on their website. Unfortunately, no real details were giving on whether or not this position will be for a new IP, or for a future LittleBigPlanet title.

Stay tuned as this story unfolds… or just go build something cool in LBP2.

PlayStation NGP (PSP2) To Get Uncharted, Killzone, Resistance Among Others

The PSP2 (NGP) has been announced and so have a number of familiar names – including the ever popular Uncharted. Games shown demoed or revealed so far at the PlayStation Meeting 2011 in Tokyo include handheld versions of Uncharted, Killzone, WipeOut, Resistance, LittleBigPlanet, Hot Shots Golf, Hustle Kings and Monster Hunter.

It was not made clear whether these are new games or ports of existing PS3 titles

In other great news – PSP digital download titles will be compatible with the NGP.

Limbo Recreated in LittleBigPlanet

An avid fan of both LittleBigPlanet, Playstations user creations Juggernaut, and Limbo, Microsofts flagship art title, has created perhaps the most awesome thing seen on LittleBigPlanet – a Limbo level. Created by Bra2008, the level features all the noticeable traits of Limbo, on a new console. Kudos to the creator for making something that is almost identical to the Xbox counterpart!

Media Molecule Details LittleBigPirates Of The Carribean Level Pack

Unfortunately, “LittleBigPirates of the Carribean” isn’t the official name for the map pack, but there’s still time, Media Molecule. The things that are official, according to MediaMolecule, are the pricing, release date, and content included in the pack. Sorry, Pirates fans- as an E-rated game, there’s no rum here.

What there is included however, is much more exciting. New music, costumes, levels, stickers, and miscellaneous items will be downloadable for LittleBigPlanet in a week on December 22nd, all for the price of £4.79 / €5.99 / US $5.99 / AUS $ 9.95 / NZD $11.50/ 5 million space bucks. You trophy whores Those of you that enjoy working towards a goal will be glad to know that the level pack also includes 11 new trophies, which detail a few more things you’ll be able to do with the level pack. PS3 & LittleBigPlanet Serve As Platform For “Game Changers” $2 Million Educational Competition

Sony Computer Entertainment America has partnered with the T.MacArthur Foundation to improve education via digital media with a $2 million open competition seeking out “designers, inventors, entrepreneurs, researchers, and others to build digital media experiences – the learning labs of the 21st Century – that help young people interact, share, build, tinker, and explore in new and innovative ways.”

One component of the competition, called “Game Changers”, offers awards specifically for the creation of new and educational gaming experiences. In a effort to broaden the reach of the Game Changers competition, Sony has donated 1000 PlayStation 3 units paired with copies of the LittleBigPlanet title to libraries and other community-based organizations found in lower income regions — a move acknowledged by President Obama himself in the statement below.

“Lifting American students from the middle to the top of the pack in STEM achievement over the next decade will not be attained by government alone,”

“I applaud the substantial commitments made today by the leaders of companies, universities, foundations, non-profits and organizations representing millions of scientists, engineers, and teachers from across the country.”

Sony President and CEO, Jack Tretton, spoke about the competition, calling it a “challenge [that] truly embodies what’s possible when you place the learning tools and the opportunity into the hands of creative and imaginative minds,” Tretton added the following:

“When leveraging the innovative technology of LittleBigPlanet and the PS3 system, both advanced and novice gamers have access to an open canvas to learn, build, and explore entirely new kinds of gaming experiences. They can also share their creations with millions of gamers around the world to play, rate, and review their levels. There’s no better training ground for anyone interested in digital media.”

Connie Yowell, MacArthur’s Director of Education, commented on Sony’s involvement:

“MacArthur is pleased to team with Sony and National Lab Day to encourage the next generation of innovators … Digital media, including games, are the learning labs of the future and this open competition encourages people to consider creative new ways to use digital media to create learning environments that are engaging, immersive and participatory,”

The intention of the competition is to promote “participatory” learning, which operates under the notion that individuals, specifically young ones, learn best through “sharing and involvement”. Chances are you will learn more when passionate and engaged in the medium you are exploring, making video games a great vehicle for the contest.

Three rounds of submissions will exist, with the public being given the opportunity to comment each round. In addition, the general public will act as judges overlooking the final candidates and ultimately selecting the People’s Choice winner in each category.

The competition officially kicks off on December 7th, and you can get more information about it by visiting dmlcompetition.net. Some may be quick to knock LittleBigPlanet’s role in all of this, but there is no questioning that the game is engaging, immersive, and participatory.

Sonic The Sackboy: LittleBigPlanet Goes Hedgehog with DLC Costume Pack

Sony and Sega are teaming up to skin one beloved icon with the blue spikey exterior of another. According to the pages of PlayStation’s Hong Kong site, costumes for Sonic the Hedgehog, Tails, Knuckles, Werehog and Dr. Eggman will be available in that region on December 17th. We will most likely see them release here in the States as well, but nothing official points to it just yet.

LittleBigPlanet PSP Hits November 17th

I got rid of my PSP a while ago because the library was pretty lackluster, and even though it’s expanding more with the inclusion of the PSPgo, I don’t really care for the system. But that’s not to say I’m excited to see how LittleBigPlanet for the PSP turns out. I guess I’ll be able to find out November 17th, when the game hits stateside.

We haven’t heard much about the game since it was announced in February, but it’s shaping up to be a rather solid PSP title. Sony didn’t add multiplayer, but they have promised DLC and the inclusion of British humorist, Stephen Fry, which frankly, is good enough for me. How many of you are planning to pick up the game?

LittleBigPlanet reaches 1 million community levels

LittleBigPlanet recently reached one million online levels, and the developers have deservedly begun to celebrate. A million levels, of which 999,990 are trophy-farming levels. The million levels have been played 244 million times; obviously this means that there have been 244 million cases of frustration over the stupid physics and jumping mechanics, and likely about a billion uses of the “hit the other player” wave of the control stick.

LittleBigGhostbusters: Ghostbusters Costumes Coming to LBP This Week

There have been rumors abound about some sort of Ghostbusters content in LittleBigPlanet ever since the jerks over at the Playstation.blog started tugging at our heart strings and teasing potential Ghostbusters content in the game. While I don’t actually own LittleBigPlanet (or for that matter, a Playstation 3) I’ve been waiting to see what Media Molecule and Sony have been holding back in the game. Today, the Playstation.blog finally revealed what we knew the entire time- that Ghostbusters costumes were indeed coming to LittleBigPlanet.

Some of you will be disappointed to learn that there aren’t any special levels or packs with this DLC, other than the costumes themselves. You can grab each costume individually for $1.99 off of the Playstation Network, or if bundlin’ makes you feel good, you can go for the full 4-pack of costumes for $5.99, and save yourself a Jefferson.

LittleBigRevenge: Be Careful What You Wish For

Once in a while, a video comes along that is just so well-produced, and so clever that you can’t help but think it’s viral marketing of some sort. SeakittenCollective’s LittleBigRevenge is a perfect example of that, though I’m sure the turn for the worse this video takes isn’t the image that Media Molecule wants to promote.

Belgian couple Michael Van Ostade and Kaat Schellen had to find out the hard way that the Sackboys (Sackgirl? Sackpeople?) of LittleBigPlanet are always adorable, but sometimes vengeful when Kaat makes the mistake of wishing that the Sackpeople were real. I don’t want to spoil the video, so I’m just gonan shut up so you can enjoy the masterpiece that is LittleBigRevenge.

LittleBigPlanet update coming soon

The PS Blog reports that LittleBigPlanet will be receiving an update soon, including a multitude of fixes and improvements. The update notes are after the jump, and include such things as ‘the game doesn’t break much now’ and ‘it’s a bit better now’. Not really, but that’s the gist of it. The patch includes the ability to listen to your own music in some sections of the game, and a better way to manage clothing, as well as a few improvements to the UI and community aspects of the game.

This update addresses several outstanding issues with the game:

* There is a new music player which lets player’s choose their own music from the XMB to play during create mode and in their Pod
* Improved decoration mode makes it easier to customize your Sackboy

New options to help prevent profiles becoming full of unwanted community objects:

* Option to delete all (unhearted) community objects and photos
* Option to select whether to automatically collect community prizes and photos
* A number of improvements have been made to make profiles more robust and to recover from certain errors
* We now support Japanese and Korean IME for text chat.
* Emitter prediction has been improved (this should help fast-moving projectiles e.g. in MGS levels)
* The player proximity switch now has a ‘require all’ option in it
* An option has been added to cycle between various level information when viewing community levels on the earth
* Various LittleBigStore improvements

Sony Statistics from CES ’09

Consumer trade show CES is currently underway, and after a relatively muted Sony conference accentuated by an amusing Tom Hanks and a thrusting Usher, we have a few PlayStation statistics to share with you.

Kaz Hirai has revealed that there are currently 17 million active PlayStation Network accounts, matching Microsoft’s recently announced Xbox Live numbers. Of those, 2.1 million accounts were added in December. Moreover, 330 million pieces of content have been downloaded from the PlayStation Store.

3.4 million people have downloaded the PlayStation HomeOpen Beta, and in less than one month, Sony has made a staggering $1 million on the sale of goods within the service.

Oh and what about Sony’s LittleBigPlanet? It has reportedly sold 1.3 million copies worldwide, with 300,000 levels created by gamers. It’d take you two years to get through all of them, so you’d better get started.

Metal Gear Solid 4 Sackboy collection coming to PSN

Sony’s Hong Kong site has revealed a set of Metal Gear Solid 4 DLC for LittleBigPlanet today. The content features costumes (individual and a pack) and level content for the game. Fans will be able to dress their Sackboy as Meryl, Screaming Mantis, and Raiden, along with the already released Old Snake. Looking at the icon for the level creation pack, it looks like there will be plenty of MGS stickers, as well as the inevitable objects and materials. Sony might be milking the cash cow a little hard with LittleBigPlanet, but honestly this looks like it might be something I’m actually interesting in getting, if only to have a Solid Snake sticker.
