A new Nintendo Power Collector’s Special issue is now available at newsstands! Mario 2nd Edition, the updated version of one of last years specials, includes:

Splatterhouse Becomes The First Game To Grace Fangoria Cover

As Ripten’s resident scaredy-cat, I didn’t know much about Fangoria going into this, but after putting in a little research, it was easy to see why a video game related Fangoria cover was a big deal.

Since the early 80s, the magazine has been a staple of the film industry for horror, slasher, and splatter fans. In its 30 year plus history, Fangoria has allowed many films to grace its cover, but despite the multitude of horror games released during that period, none of them have ever been featured on the magazine’s glossy exterior.

So for Namco’s Splatterhouse remake to beat out highly regarded horror titles like Silent Hill and Resident Evil to be the first game featured as the ‘zine’s top story is a huge accomplishment, not only for the talented team behind Splatterhouse, but for video games in general. Because when the general public is able to consider video games in the same vein as films and music, that’s when we know we’re moving away from the close-minded “games are immature” mindset of the past.

Even PS3 Owners Rate Xbox Live Best

In a recent opinion poll, 74.7% of the PlayStation 3 owners surveyed considered Xbox Live to be the online service with the best feature set when compared to PlayStation Network and WiiConnect24. In addition, 71.4% of the people that actually own an Xbox 360 feel as though Xbox Live is worth the subscription fee.

Possibly even more intriguing is the fact that of the people that owned all three consoles, meaning they had the option of playing multiplatform games online for free, 63% still found Xbox Live to be worth the price. Another statistic that I found particularly interesting is that an in-game XMB is the feature most wanted on PSN, even more so than Home, Trophies, and further PSP integration.

The survey was conducted by Game Informer and printed in their August 2008 issue.
