You may not know this but Microsoft’s fine print does not allow the ammo from one Xbox exclusive hero to damage another Xbox exclusive hero. Unfortunately for Master Chief, they forgot to add Chainsaw Bayonets to that list.

Geeked Out – Man Trades Engagement Ring For Master Chief Armor

This week’s Geeked Out is a little bit unconventional. It’s not about a cool videogame-related gadget or jewelry that someone’s put up on Etsy or Reddit to declare their love for a game franchise.

No. This story’s about a man who had his heart broken. He was ready to propose to the girl and had purchased the perfect diamond ring for her. And she said something akin to,

“I’m nailing the hell out this tool I met in karate class and while we’ve been driving in my car, you and I have been listening to the terrible mix CD he made me and now you’ll never be able to hear Alkaline Trio without wanting to fucking kill yourself.”

Yeah. Ouch.

He kept the ring around, unable to sell it to anyone in person. At last, he pawned it off on eBay and got a pretty penny off of it.

Instead of paying off grad school loans or buying a megafuckton of Rocky Road ice cream to eat and cry himself to sleep every night, Eric Smith decided to replace his love with another: a full suit of fucking Halo armor. Sure, you can try to use your Freudian analysis on Eric all you like about how he picked the armor because subconsciously he’s trying to protect himself, but he bought the damned thing because he’s a badass.

Oh, and this isn’t just some shoddily put together cardboard and styrofoam affair. This thing is a fullblown, forty-pound fiber glass monster, built in with LEDs.

Best of luck to you, Eric. I’m sorry to hear about what happened, but I’m glad you used Halo to get over that stumbling block.

Master Chief isn’t just having his original adventure reskinned and rehashed, oh no. He’s also getting a full blown list of new cheevos to go with it!

They had this to say:

In addition to the type of achievements that are standard across all Halo titles, we took the opportunity to create several level-specific achievements. This specific batch was born out of community meta experiences spanning the decade since Halo: CE launched in 2001. For example, you can now get an achievement if you complete The Library on Legendary in 30 minutes or less. No small feat but if you pull it off, you will then gain a monument to all your sins. I mean, a virtual monument for surviving the experience.

French Press Kit Outs Halo Movie for 2012 – Spielberg Reportedly Involved

Sure you’ve heard it before, but this time it’s no rumor. According to a French press release kit for Halo: Cryptum, a Halo movie is planned for 2012 with Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks attached.

As clearly stated in the press release:

“A film adaptation is set in 2012. It will be conducted jointly by two heavyweights of American cinema: Steven Spielberg and Dreamworks.”

Sure we’ve heard it before and we know that Spielberg has shown interest in making a Halo film for at least a couple of years. 343 and Dreamworks have been contacted but have not responded. Leave it to the French to out such a secret.

343 Industries Reveal First Details of Halo 4, 5 and 6 – “The Reclaimer Trilogy”

First things first. Halo 4 will be out in 2012. It will be a direct sequel to Halo 3. You will buy it.

Now, onto the rest of the news:

Today during Halofest at PAX Prime, 343 Industries has revealed the first details of Halo 4, 5 and 6 – which is being called “The Reclaimer Trilogy”

Here is the video that was shown at the beginning of the Halo 4 panel today:

343 stated during the panel that Halo 4 will see Master Chief and Cortana heading to a very mysterious Forrunner planet and that this new trilogy will delve deeper into the character of Master Chief himself as well as his relationship with Cortana. Yet, it is certainly not the Master Chief origin story some were hoping for.

They did however state that the version of Master Chief you saw in the E3 2011 trailer is not the final version. They did not comment on whether or not he will be unmasked, but if they do ever have Johnny Boy take his helmet off, it will hopefully go better than when KISS took off their face paint.

Co-op? Probably. The Halo Forge? Definitely. They love all that community interaction.

E3 2011: Halo Anniversary Impressions

Although it was only officially shown and announced at Microsofts initial press conference on Monday, Halo Anniversary is one of the biggest titles on my video game radar.

I was lucky enough to be one of the first people to check it out, and I can comfortably say that Halo is in safe and experienced hands at 343.

The gameplay started off with the island approach at the start of the “Silent Cartographer” level, and right from the start my mind was blown.

Halo is a game I grew up playing ten years ago, and as such it has a pretty special and important place in my gaming heart. Seeing the beautiful draw distances and waves rolling up the beach was something I never would’ve imagined for the game that pioneered console shooters.

As the Pelican lands and Chief exits via the rear ramp a rush of memories suddenly came back.

The Elites and Grunts strafing and avoiding the gunfire while bullets and plasma whipped up dust. It was, and still is amazing.

As we progressed along the beach, the executive producer of the game showed us a new feature that allows you to instantly switch between the old classic game and the new HD remake. As the water moved peacefully around a Warthog sitting in the tide, a single button was pushed and we were instantly looking at the old Halo from ten years ago.

It’s an extremely humbling thing to visually see just how far games have come through the times, and it’s an excellent addition to what was already an incredible game.

Terminals from Halo 3 are making a return, and its been promised that if you find them all in Anniversary, well, you’ll find out some of the story in Halo 4. On the topic of returning features, series fans will be happy to know that the original Magnum is returning to the series.

After we checked out the brief yet awesome campaign experience we were shown a multiplayer trailer. The multiplayer is running in the Halo: Reach engine and as such will be featuring armor abilities across the seven maps that will be available.

A representative from MLG also confirmed that they intend on supporting the game with MLG playlists like in the older games.

The overhauled soundtrack and visuals coupled with the timely gameplay an action make Halo Anniversary a must have for any serious fans of the series.

Halo Anniversary launches this November and at $39.99 it’s a damn steal.

E3 2011: Halo 4 Announced at Microsoft’s Keynote (Trailer)

Microsoft definitely closed out their show with a bang, showing a quick teaser of Halo 4. The teaser wasn’t anything solid, just showing Master Chief and Cortana trying to find a way to escape a destroyed ship, possibly the one he was in when he went into a cryogenic sleep at the end of Halo 3.

Halo 4, which has been rumored for awhile, will be the start of the a new trilogy that will be headed by 343 Industries. Time will only see how they will handle the legendary franchise. The game is currently scheduled to release Holiday 2012

Has Microsoft Accidentally Revealed Halo 5!?

Earlier this week a Halo: Combat Evolved remake was announced, and now it would appear Microsoft already has the next big thing planned for the Halo franchise.

During a recent tech demo for a Kinect like navigation system on a ‘digital wallpaper’, a number of icons flash up on the home menu, the most noticeable one being “Inside Halo 5″. Now if you’re like us RipTen folk and consider Halo: Reach as Halo 4 – this ‘Halo 5′ title could be the rumoured game that 343 Industries are said to be working on.

Located to the left of the Halo 5 symbol is also a Project Gotham Racing icon, and an Xbox Classic logo is also shown as well. Perhaps this is old technology? Who knows. Check out the video below and make up your own mind;

Full Blown Halo: Combat Evolved Remake Coming Later This Year

You want it? You got it. The game that started it all is getting more than just a high-rez update. It’s getting a full blown Xbox 360 remake this holiday season.

The game is not being developed by Bungie, but instead by Saber Interactive, the company who made TimeShift and it will run on the current Reach engine. The game is also expected to support 1080p and 3DTVs.

Will it have online co-op? You bet your ass it will. This is 2011, baby.

The game is expected to launch on November 15, 2011 – 10 years after the original Halo launched.

Holy shit, has it been 10 years since Halo? I’m getting old . . .

RipTen’s Guide to Becoming a Typical Video Game Protagonist (For Men)

At some point, we’ve all wanted to be that bad ass character in a video game. After all, who wouldn’t want to perform death-defying stunts, kill people in exotic locations, and get to nail the hot babe at the end of it all? If you wanna get started, here’s what you need.

1. A Checkered or Tragic Past

The best video game protagonists are usually men who are running away from something or have a tragic event looming over their heads that they refuse to let go of. Critics and gamers love characters like John Marston, Sam Fisher, and Kratos not just because of what they do, but also because of the defining moments that solidify them as great characters. For you newcomers, being betrayed by someone you called your friend or leaving a person to die are your best bets at the moment. Amnesia also works – so feel free to hit yourself in the head with something.

2. Be a Decent to Attractive-Looking White Male

Take a look at most of the memorable video game characters from the past ten years. Never mind those forgettable races, like blacks or Asians. Women!? Pfffft, their only job is to start out hostile and then gradually fall in love with you, man! It also helps if you have some sort of visible scar somewhere. Hair and clothing are optional. Age isn’t that big a deal either, but early 20′s to mid 30′s will make it more likely for you to get picked up. Exceptions may be made for CJ from San Andreas and the Cole Train – if they ever give the brother his own game.

3. Take More Bullets to the Body Than Physically Possible and Still Survive

What are these round, silvery things that attempt to penetrate your rock hard abs? Haha, foolish mortals! All you have to do is hide behind something for a few seconds and you’ll be good as new! Whereas most normal people would go to a hospital and get the wounds stitched up and bullets plucked out, you just concentrate behind a crate and those wounds will vanish all on their own! It also helps if you can inexplicably operate all sorts of heavy weaponry even though you’ve had no prior military training.

4. Be Voiced by Nolan North

Who voices Nathan Drake? Nolan North. Desmond Miles? Nolan North. The Prince of Persia? Nolan North. The examples are endless, and you should have the pleasure of owning his voice as well in your upcoming epic saga. His voice can go from cocky to melodious to raspy in the blink of an eye, and it’s perfect for whatever type of character you want to end up as. However, if you’re a heavy smoker you may also want to consider David Hayter.

5. Near the End, Hint Towards a Sequel

Doesn’t matter whether or not you get it, just do it. Have the bad guy mysteriously come back to life, a plot-related device go missing, stumble upon a time machine, something!! As long as you hint toward further adventures, you’re sure to get a sequel in the near future. Look at games look Psychonauts and Brutal Legend, even they’re getting sequels in a few years and Tim Schafer is pretty much broke!

6. Get Betrayed by Someone at Some Point in the Game

Ok, this one is pretty much crucial to your staying power. Best friend, female accomplice, that guy who talks to you about the weather, just bet your awesome healing powers that you’ll end up with some trust issues by the time everything’s said and done. For maximum emotional impact, be sure to try and turn them back to your side so they don’t die; on the off chance that does work, be sure to bring up their betrayal constantly, because they’ll just love that.

7. Wear Some Sort of Headgear

It’ll make you look rough and seem like you’ve been on the dark side of the streets at some point. Whether it’s goggles, shades, a cowboy hat, a bandana, or even a space marine helmet, just find something that you can wear on your friggin’ head frequently – And do not under any circumstances – ever – take it off. If you do, they won’t show your face until you put it back on.

So, there you have it. Follow these 7 easy steps and you’ll be well on your way to becoming the video game leading man of your dreams!!

Halo: Reach Campaign Matchmaking Begins Oct. 19

Campaign matchmaking playlists are scheduled for Halo: Reach on October 19th. The game’s rank cap is expected to be raised in the next month.

According to Bungie’s official website, playlist updates are typically on a monthly schedule. Further Updates will include “a dedicated Infection and Snipers playlist amidst a slew of other changes.”

With rank, currently players are limited to Lt. Colonel Grade C with credits accumulating beyond that point. When the rank cap is raised it’s completely possible for some players to jump more than one rank.

While not giving a specific date Bungie notes the changes to the rank cap will come “soon”.

Bungie Teases Life After Halo – MMO?

This morning at Joseph Staten’s GDC speaking engagement titled “Writing the Whirlwind”, he had warned the audience that he wouldn’t say one word about the developer’s plans for its first post-Halo game. But could Bungie’s writer and design director keep his mouth shut…of course not. When asked he stated:

“I think it’s a shame that we spent so much time working on this world called Halo and then we only let people spend six or eight or 10 hours in it,” Staten said. “Wouldn’t it be great if we could make a world that was always there for you, with lots of stories to tell, like a big, infinite storytelling horizon? Man, that would be great.”

Sounds like an MMO is a brewing. Possibly a Sci-fi MMO? Whatever Bungie has planned there are legions of fans ready and eagerly awaiting.

Halo: Reach DLC Confirmed, Adds 10 More Achievements

Earlier this week, Bungie let a screenshot out that hinted at upcoming DLC, bringing a total of 1250 Gamerscore for Halo: Reach.

Halo fans are jumping for joy! Details are scarce, but let’s hope the content is more than just a few maps. I personally, would love more co-op and maybe a campaign side mission. Here’s what Bungie had to say:

“We plan to extend the online experience of ‘Halo: Reach’ with a robust lineup of Add-on content for the most popular game on Xbox LIVE today. While we don’t have any specifics to share at this time, we look forward to revealing additional details on new Add-on content for ‘Halo: Reach’ in the near future.”

The ‘near future’ couldn’t come soon enough.

2: Run through the level until you can pick up the Target Locator.
3: Walk to the door and wait for a ‘Checkpoint’
