Rockstar Delays Max Payne 3, Now Coming This May

Rockstar Games has announced the release dates for Max Payne 3, on consoles and PC- and almost all fall in May this year.

Max Payne 3 will come out for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on May 15 in North America and May 18 internationally. The PC version will arrive May 29 in North America and June 1 internationally.

Nice to see Rockstar announcing a release date for the PC version of a game before the console version comes out. Considering Red Dead Redemption it’s nice to get a PC version at all, to be honest.

Four New Max Payne 3 Screens Dive In (In Bullet Time)

Hot off the presses are four new screens for Rockstar’s long awaited Max Payne 3.

After seeing the game in action for ourselves at New York Comic Con, our hype levels for MP3 have hit critical mass and we can’t wait to be diving around in Bullet Time on Max’s dark and dangerous new adventure.

For those of you who are looking to catch up after Max Payne 2, here’s the rundown from Rockstar:

Max Payne 3 takes place several years after the events of Max Payne 2. Still haunted by his past, Max leaves the NYPD and the United States to take a job in executive security and protection at the suggestion of Raul Passos, a former acquaintance from his early days on the police force.Max ultimately finds himself in SãoPaulo, Brazil, working to protect the wealthy Branco family consisting of Rodrigo, a real estate mogul and his two brothers; Victor, who’s an accomplished local politician and Marcelo, a party-loving Euro-trash playboy. But when Rodrigo’s wife Fabiana is kidnapped by members of the Comando Sombra gang while under Max’s protection, all hell breaks loose and Max finds himself caught up in something much larger than a simple kidnapping. Alone in a strange country, Max is quickly in over his head in an extremely volatile city.

Max Payne Coming to Mobile

The guys over at Rockstar are known for their groundbreaking new titles. Recently, they’re known for such games as LA Noire and Red Dead Redemption. More than 10 years ago, they brought us one of my personal favorites, Max Payne. The dark, gritty detective story redefined the genre. Stuff like bullet time, which we now take for granted in action games, was first introduced in Max Payne. Max’s immersive story made him one of the genre’s first multi-dimensional characters, attracting loyal fans worldwide.

So it’s awesome to find out that Rockstar is bringing Max Payne’s original adventure in HD to mobile devices. Max Payne will have connectivity to the Rockstar Games Social Club and boast the same features as its PC counterparts – including HD graphics and high-resolution textures, taking full advantage of the latest mobile technologies, including incredibly customizable controls.

Max Payne redefined what a console action game looked like over a decade ago; now Rockstar is bringing that classic to mobile gamers. I’m looking forward to this one coming out, for sure. While no specific release date was specified, Rockstar has assured us the game will be ready before the launch of Max Payne 3 in March 2012.

First Max Payne 3 Trailer Debuts September 14th

Just yesterday Rockstar Games announced the release date for Max Panye 3. Today, the company announced that next week, Wednesday September 14th at noon Eastern time, they will release the official first trailer for Max Payne 3.

As a huge Rockstar fan, let me be the first to tell you that if any company knows how to hype a game with their trailer, it’s Rockstar. So expect a kick ass fucking trailer next week.

Max Payne 3 Coming March 2012

Rockstar Games have announced today that Max Payne 3 will finally be hitting store shelves early next year. Come March 2012, Max Payne 3 will hit Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Founder of Rockstar Games, Sam Houser stated today:

“Max Payne 3 gave us an amazing creative opportunity to
evolve one of our most iconic characters. We’re excited to show fans a modern version of Max that pulls them back into his dark and twisted story.”

In addition to an expansive single-player campaign, Max Payne 3 will be the first title in the series to introduce an addictive multiplayer experience. Max Payne 3‘s multiplayer aims to deliver a compelling experience that dynamically alters maps and mode progression for all players in a match. Along with traditional multiplayer modes, Max Payne 3 will also include a deep reward and leveling system, persistent clans and multiple strategic load-out options.

Its been quite a while since we’ve heard anything about Max Payne 3, until today. Rockstar Games have just released two, yes two brand new screenshots for their next big installment. It may not be much, but for Max Payne fans, this is something they’ve been waiting for. Now we just have to wait another six months before we get an additional two screenshots.

Max Payne 3 is set to release sometime in 2012 for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

New Max Payne 3 Screens, Story and Gameplay Details – ‘Nuff Said

Max Payne is back! Well… not yet. While you wait in slo-mo bullet time for a release date, check out these new screens and info before you hit the ground.

This is what Rockstar had to say about the return of Max Payne.

It’s almost exactly 10 years since Rockstar Games and Remedy worked together on the original Max Payne, and eight years since Max Payne 2.

With Max Payne 3, Rockstar Studios’ aim was to use every tool at their disposal – from advances in Euphoria physics, particle effects and AI, to a new creative approach to Max’s classic comic-book panels, combined with Rockstar’s notoriously obsessive attention to detail – to create a highly cinematic action shooter.

I’d do a recap on the story details, but Rockstar was kind enough to put em together for me:

Max Payne 3 is set eight years after the events of the last instalment. No longer a cop, Max is close to washed-up, drunk and addicted to painkillers. Without a job on the force, Max has left the greater New York area, and he finds himself in Sao Paulo, Brazil, working in the burgeoning field of private security. Max’s latest assignment sees him protecting the family of Rodrigo Branco, a wealthy real estate mogul and his two brothers: Victor, a local politician and the youngest, Marcello, a party-loving Eurotrash playboy, along with Fabiana Branco, Rodrigo’s trophy wife, and Giovanna, Fabiana’s sister. The story of Max’s descent from vengeful, leather-jacket wearing detective roaming the alleys of New York to the broken, shaven-headed man out for justice on unfamiliar streets far from home is at the center of Max Payne 3.

Rockstar has also given us the rundown on some of the cool features of Max Payne 3:

- The combination of Natural Motion’s Euphoria character behavior system and Bullet Time adds a new level to Max’s classic shoot-dodge moves. Shoot-dodge is not a canned animation, but a natural interaction with the environment, as Max will reach out to the floor as he dives, and naturally respond to objects in his way if you attempt to dive into a wall or obstacle

- This marriage of slow-motion gunplay and Euphoria physics amplifies the cinematic action of Max Payne 3 significantly, and enemies will also respond realistically to each bullet fired.

- Max Payne 3 extends the concept of Bullet-Time to now include game areas of the game that will trigger set pieces involving Bullet-Time. These provide epic moments of action that allow Max to take out enemies in a new interpretation of Max Payne’s signature style.

- Bullet-Cams return: in keeping with the stylish gunplay for which Max is known, Bullet-Cams deliver players a reward for downing enemies with a satisfying final kill

- Max Payne 3 takes the graphic novel panels of the earlier games and evolves them by utilizing in-game assets to create a motion comic-style approach.

- James McCaffrey, the original voice of Max, is back. Not only as the voice of max, but Max’s appearance, face and many of his movements in Max Payne 3 are all captured directly from James himself.

- Max Payne 3 features an integrated cover system. Cover adds an extra strategic element to the classic shoot-dodge/bullet-time/ run-and-gun mechanics of Max Payne, providing players with new options in any given situation

- Tremendous detail has been paid to every facet of Max Payne 3: Bullets destroy nearly everything in the environment, sweat will appear on Max’s face and shirt as the heat of battle wears on, and blood soaks the clothing of his enemies. You’ll also notice the minute details of the weapons themselves: hammers cock back, slides move, shells expel from the chamber and literally hundreds more.

- Partners and sidekicks will play a large role in Max Payne 3. Hundreds of hours of custom motion-capture were done for individual characters, making traditional in-game encounters completely unique, such as enemies sweeping a room or simply the way Max’s partners will behave as they move through the game.

It all sounds too good to be true. Luckily, this is a Rockstar game. It’s all true.

Steam Sale Day 4: EVE Online, Dawn of War II Gold, Half-Life and More

Today’s set of Steam deals has been revealed, and includes savings on EVE Online, Dawn of War II Gold, Half-Life and a handful more.

I highly recommend EVE Online- it’s the best MMO there is. WoW’s for some people, but for real men there’s EVE. The learning curve is more of a learning knife edge, but for seasoned gamers it’s incredibly rewarding. Obviously Half-Life is an excellent game, if a little dated now, and Dawn of War is also really good. Lots of good deals today, but I’m hoping they up their game, as we’ve not truly seen anything as crazily good value as the Winter sale yet.

Take-Two Interactive Wants One New IP Every Year

Despite being constantly hammered about the next installment of Grand Theft Auto, Take-Two’s Alan Lewis says that the company has several important franchises and wants a new one each year.

“Every year we’re going to try to introduce at least one new IP that we hope over the long term will work well for us.”

They did just that with Red Dead Revolver, which was released in 2004 to mixed reviews, but paved the way for 2010′s smash hit Red Dead Redemption. And Mafia II, the sequel to the 2002 hit, looks like it could be one of the best games of the year when it hits in August.

And then throw in BioShock, Max Payne, Civilization, and Midnight Club, among others, and yeah, you have quite a bit of hit franchises, which obviously isn’t stopping Take-Two from creating more. And while all these new franchises will just lead to more and more sequels flooding the market, as long as they keep up their “one new IP per year” mission, I’ll be pretty happy with them.

Max Payne Games Now On Xbox Originals

While this really isn’t a surprise, what with Max Payne 3 on the way and the ESRB leak late last month, it’s awesome nonetheless.

Earlier today, Major Nelson announced that both Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne are now available on the Xbox 360 as Xbox Originals. Max Payne. Max Payne.

The games are 1200 MS points each, or $15. This is a little disappointing, as both of the games can be purchased on Steam for the price of one of the Xbox Originals. I strongly prefer console to PC gaming, but even I would be more inclined to pick them up on the latter.

Still, for those of you 360 owners without a Max Payne-capable PC, if any of you actually exist, these are two fantastic games that you need to play.

Did the ESRB Leak Max Payne 1 & 2 for the Xbox 360?

The ESRB has never been an impenetrable fortress of information, and the fact that they have a search function on their website doesn’t really help them keep things secret. Destructoid pointed our earlier today that the ESRB is now listing three Max Payne games, one being the poorly-recieved Max Payne Advance, and the other two being Max Payne 1 and 2, which are listed for the Xbox 360.

Since Rockstar announced Max Payne 3 a short time ago, they may be looking to release the previous games on Xbox Live in the same time frame as the third’s release in retail. Destructoid also pointed out that the games weren’t listed for the PS3, which could signal another exclusive for Microsoft. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see what Rockstar says on the matter.

Rockstar announces Max Payne 3

Rockstar have announced today that the third instalment of their bullet-time third-person action game series will be arriving during “Winter 2009″. The game “tells the story of a retired police detective embroiled in a world of corruption, turmoil and intense violence,” Rockstar says. Max Payne 3 will include “hyper-intense action” (“that fans have come to love”), and will move the story in a “new direction.”

Rockstar also notes that Max is “a few years older, more world-weary and cynical than ever. We experience the downward spiral of his life after the events of Max Payne 2 and witness his last chance for salvation.” The game is set for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, and may or may not be a good game. You never know with Rockstar.

Max Payne Movie Review: Feeling No Payne

If you’re a gamer, this movie will be especially painful to watch. My hope going in, was that the movie adaptation of the Max Payne video game would be full of Payne … and it was, just not the kind I had hoped for.

Following in the sordid footsteps of video game to movie adaptations is the recently released Max Payne. Staring the talented Mark Wahlberg (I Heart Huckabees, The Perfect Storm, The Departed) and a cast of talented actors, this film feels like it makes an attempt to render the intellectual property into something that non-gamers (also see: cretins) will understand.

Sadly, their attempt falls flat and turns the movie into nightmarish gibberish usually reserved for Subway employees, Republican Vice-Presidential candidates, and the functionally retarded.

As a fan of the game series, I went into this movie skeptical. I had read an interview with the developers at Remedy who said about the movie, and I’m paraphrasing, “What the fuck?” Evidently developers watched the movie at a special screening and didn’t even recognize their beloved title.

The plot is more or less preserved; characters are present with a few extras as are the major plot elements, but I couldn’t help but feel like I wasn’t watching the Max Payne I had struggled with on “Dead on Arrival.”

The fact is that this movie was hamstrung by a PG-13 rating. However, Max Payne is not, repeat not, a PG-13 game. Max Payne is a gritty shooter in which there’s so many bullets flying it’s a wonder how you don’t get lead poisoning. The watered down Max Payne is so plainly cosmetic it renders the movie a nugatory pass at a genius game.

Director John Moore has taken a public shellacking from critics and game fans, making him a social leper. His Wikipedia entry was even defaced as an angry gamer wrote next to his Max Payne movie credit “ruined the movie…pg-13!? you and fox both blow you ‘cockgobblers’(i know you like that word you damn fag)”

Perhaps a tad unfair but that’s hardly the point. You can’t argue with the pull that hacks like Uwe Boll and Paul Anderson have had on the video game industry by creating adaptations that are so bitterly repugnant to their target audience that the very mention of their names makes even the most casual of gamers bleed from the nose and bite strangers on the face. Om nom nom nom nom.

There is a rumor that an unrated version will be released of Max Payne, but we’ll see. I know that for myself that after having seen this I doubt I will want to see it again with the promise of coitus or behavior modifying recreational pharmaceuticals.

What makes me the most utterly dejected is that you can tell from the production value that this movie had it all: a quality cast, a nice big budget, and a story that wrote itself – and Moore squandered it.

Mark Wahlberg Injured by Unruly Wiimote

Mark Wahlberg was spotted with his hand wrapped from a recent injury. Did he bust himself up during one of his diving slo-motion gun battles on the set of Max Payne, or perhaps from punching someone in the face with extreme Funky Bunchedness? Nope, turns out he took a crack on the wrist doing something far more dangerous: playing Wii Sports.

In an interview with British movie magazine Total Film, The Mark explained his injury:

“Um, it was tennis on the Wii! I was playing with my daughter the other day and she swung the remote real hard and it cracked me on the side of my wrist! Yeah, yeah. I know, I know. It sounds kinda funny – but it fuckin’ hurt, man!”

Seems strange to me that he would wrap it up, though. Why doesn’t he just pop some painkillers and chill out until his health refills? Duh!

Max Payne Movie Will “Make You Feel Like You ARE Max Payne”

The cast and director of the upcoming game-to-film adaptation of Max Payne gave a little Q&A at the San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend. Marky Mark discussed how he was really looking to kick ass again, and the director, John Moore, expressed how he intended to break the mold of videogame movies and make sure Max Payne doesn’t suck.

John Moore had the following to say in regards to making gamers happy:

“Here’s the funny thing about video games and movies — the minute you take that controller out of the player’s hands, you better deliver something of equal value. Ya gotta give them something so exciting and kick-ass and we thought the way to do that is to be highly subjective and make you feel like you are Max Payne.”

I’m not entirely sure how he intends to do that — is the movie shot from 3 feet behind Marky Mark except during cutscenes? As I said before, however, the trailer does have me excited for the movie. Of course, I’m a Marky Mark fan, so maybe I’m just biased. Speaking of Marky Mark, here’s what the actor said regarding his role as the titular Max Payne:

“I read the script — after Invincible and The Happening and Lovely Bones, I wanted to kick some ass again and I got an opportunity to do it in a way where I think I did more than I did in The Departed: movies like Four Brothers and Fear.”

They also apparently talked about a new camera the used called “The Phantom” that takes up to 1,000 frames per second (which is almost as fast as Crysis runs on my killer gaming PC). Bullet-time was a huge part of what made Max Payne (the game) what it is, but the difficulty they faced was doing slo-mo in a way that didn’t just look like The Matrix or a John Woo flick.

Wish I could be at Comic-Con myself, but at least the lucky bastards at Geeks of Doom keep me (and thus, you) informed.

Mark Wahlberg Won’t Play Max Payne Video Game – Cites Addictive Personality

Mark Wahlberg, the actor slated to play Max Payne in the upcoming film based on the popular video game franchise, states that he has not played, and will not play the video game. Why? Because he says he has an addictive personality, and that, combined with his other adult responsibilities, simply won’t mesh well.

In an interview with People.com, Wahlberg says “I didn’t want to play because I have an addictive personality.” The actor then adds:

“I got more responsibility now than I’ve ever had with the kids and everything else. I don’t want to be spending 14 hours on the videogame and then eight hours on the set. It’s not going to work out.”

That’s strange. I seem to remember Mark Wahlberg posing for Calvin Klein in his underwear, grabbing his crotch, and belting out really bad rap songs about vibrations or something like that.

Guess it’s a good thing his addictive personality didn’t kick in back then, or we may have been treated to a Max Payne in boxer briefs, running around shooting people and asking “can you feel it baby?”.

Max Payne Movie Trailer Made Me Geekgasm in Slo-Mo

I just watched the trailer for the upcoming movie adaptation of Max Payne, and it was shockingly good. I had a certain expectation considering it was a videogame movie (that being that it would suck hard), but this film may have a shot at breaking the stereotype. Read on to see the YouTube-ified trailer.

Personally, I like Marky Mark. I think he’s a fine actor and has the perfect scowl-face for Max Payne. Honestly, he would have made a much better Wolverine in the X-Men movies, even though Hugh Jackman is the shit, and the Funky Bunch could have been those other mutant schmoes. Anyways, Marky Mark has played cops before, and he’s played sulky, angry dudes before. He’s even already played an angry cop that was sulky and a dude – Marky Mark is Max Payne.

Mila Kunis Joins Max Payne Movie

Could she be playing Mona Sax?

According to Dark Zero, Mila Kunis of That 70’s Show fame has recently been cast in the Max Payne film adaptation.

Kunis will supposedly play an assassin who allies with Payne. Given this description and Kunis’ look, it definitely sounds like she could be playing the role of Mona Sax, pictured above.

Max Payne recently started filming with Mark “Marky Mark” Wahlberg as the titular character.
