Hideo Kojima Says He Would Have Made Metal Gear Rising Slower and More “Bushido”

Not much was known about Metal Gear Solid: Rising (now Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance) until now.

The fast paced 3rd person action title being developed by Platinum Games (of Bayonetta fame) is a far cry from what Metal Gear fans are used to.

When I had the chance to speak with famed series creator Hideo Kojima before the 2011 Spike TV Video Game Awards on Saturday, I asked him how he felt about what the team at Platinum had done with Rising, without him leading the way. His replies were interesting, but I wouldn’t truly see why until after the world premeire trailer later that night:

As you can see, Kojima-san said that if he had made Rising, the outcome of the game wouldn’t be as speedy as the game they are making now, and in fact it would be a lot more Bushido-esque.

For reference, let’s take a look at the trailer for Rising:

That is certainly not slow, and certainly not Bushido.

Now, for those of you not familiar with the term Bushido, you should know that is it the code or way of the samurai.

If we look to Bushido, the Soul of Japan, by Inazo Nitobe (written in 1905) it is defined in part as:

The sense of honour, implying a vivid consciousness of personal dignity and worth, which could not fail to characterise the samurai, born and bred to value the duties and privileges of their profession.

The discipline of fortitude on the one hand, endurance without a groan, and the teaching of politeness on the other, requiring us not to mar the pleasure or serenity of another by expressions of our own sorrow or pain, combined to engender a stoical turn of mind, and eventually to confirm it into a national trait of apparent stoicism.

Perhaps what Kojima-san envisions is a game where a lot more attention is paid to not only the stoic and honorable sword wielder, but the sword itself, and the long and bloody relationship between the two.

In that respect, Nitobe writes:

So precious an object cannot long escape the notice and the skill of artists nor the vanity of its owner, especially in times of peace.

Too often did the blade flash forth from its peaceful sheath. The abuse sometimes went so far as to try the acquired steel on some harmless creature’s neck.

The question that concerns us most is, however,–Did Bushido justify the promiscuous use of the weapon?

A dastard or a braggart was he who brandished his weapon on undeserved occasions. A self-possessed man knows the right time to use it, and such times come but rarely.

Perhaps we would see a game that pays much more attention to why and how Raiden kills, and see his swordfighting movements in a much more traditional samurai-esque and even a “romantic” way. I would certainly need a lot more time with Kojima-san to know for sure.

So, are you satisfied with how the fast paced Rising is turning out? Or would you have preferred a slower, more Bushido-esque swordfighting game helmed by Kojima-san?

Regardless of what you think of the direction Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is taking, the man himself stated that, “The team made something very different from what I do, and I like it”

If anything, I would add:

Wherever man struggles to raise himself above himself, there we see the immortal discipline of Hideo Kojima at work.

Stuff That Never Gets Old: Metal Gear Awesome

There are some entities on the internet that transcend time and relevancy. No matter how out-of-date they may be, no matter how many times you’ve seen them, the humor lingers and we find ourselves right back where we started, laughing our asses off as we add one more view to the tally of millions. This, my friends, is stuff that never gets old.

If you don’t lurk through the depths of Newgrounds, then the alias egoraptor most likely means nothing to you. For those of you non-Internet-loving heathens, egoraptor is like the Morgan Freeman of Newgrounds. His vocal work is ubiquitous in almost all well-done flash works on Newgrounds. However, he’s probably better known for his Awesome series, where he parodies well-known videogames with randomness and cock jokes into a blend that’s just… awesome.

Metal Gear Awesome is one of my favorite Awesome series, because half of the jokes are just so god damned true. There’s just no way of describing the insanity of the Awesome series except by watching one of them. So do that. Do that now.

Anyone who’s familiar with the Metal Gear Solid series knows Revolver Ocelot. That cocky bastard sure does love his six shooters and he sure knows how to spin ‘em. He does some pretty impressive gun spinnin’ in the game, but let’s see someone try that in real life!

Well, not only is YouTuber Juski1000 one hell of a gunslinger, he’s so damn good, he can drop it like he’s Ocelot.

Yes, that is impressive.

22 Brand New Screens From Metal Gear Solid HD Collection

Konami has released over 20 screenshots from their upcoming HD remake, the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection. The screens cover all three games from the collection: Metal Gear Solid 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, and former PSP-only entry Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.

The Metal Gear Solid HD Collection is set to release on November 8th for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Konami has released the first official footage of the HD remake of Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker today. The footage has Snake and Miller talking in audio diaries and also there’s some solid gameplay in there.

The game was originally shown on the E3 show floor but this is the first full quality video of that footage.

Konami Announces Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Clothing Line – Eyepatches Sold Seperately

For those of you who have been waiting for official Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker gear you can wear IRL (and who hasn’t?) – April 11th will be your lucky day.

Konami has just announced that their complete line of inspired clothing will be available online in North America in a week!

Instead of being a typical gamer-gear, the Peace Walker line will have coats, sweatshirts, T-shirts, pants, and hats that are actually inspired by what’s worn in-game. Additionally, there will be different releases for each quarter and for special events.

Now, while this may sound pretty derp at first, the threads are actually rather bad ass… check ‘em out below:

Porting Titles From PS3 to NGP – How Easy Is It?

Anyone who watched the Playstation Meeting 2011 heard from Sony and third party developers alike that moving PS3 titles to NGP is relatively painless. That seems like a huge step in tech and an even larger step in faith. The NGP while technically impressive isn’t capable of running PS3 games at full specs, otherwise they wouldn’t need to be “ported” in the first place.

Hideo Kojima, while showing a very impressive Metal Gear Solid 4 demo on the device, mentioned that his dream is “cloud computing gaming”. In layman’s terms he wants players to be able to play a game on a PS3 and then walk outside and be able to play the same game on the NGP. He then goes on to say that he will be announcing a game at E3 that will fulfill his dream. Whether this title will stream from the PS3 to the NGP or if the handheld will handle the processing is still unknown, but it is an interesting concept.

Tim Sweeny, of Epic Games, mentioned that the PS3 title Dungeon Defenders was adapted to the NGP in a very short time and Kojima even mentioned a system where model and enviornment data could be exported to the NGP from a PS3 version of the game. Nagoshi even showed a Yakuza demo just to prove how easy it is to port titles to the robust device.

If these developers are indeed telling the truth, we could see a whole new level for portable games. Imagine a game you could play on either your handheld or console and the quality would be identical or better yet – imagine a game that you only have to buy one copy to play anywhere at anytime. The possibilities are astounding, but only time will tell if these extraordinary claims turn out to be true.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker PSP Bundle Details

Here’s some details about a PSP bundle (or two) for Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, the biggest PSP game since Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. They’re quite good. There is not much more to say.

The Sony deal will cost about $295, and includes the game, a camo-skinned PSP-3000, and a case. The more expensive Konami one will include some dog tags, a stand, and a booklet of some description. Neither are the most exciting things in the world, but they’re good enough, I suppose. Tempting, one might even say. I particularly like the stand and the fact that it implies something about cut-scenes in MGS. (There are long cut-scenes in MGS and you need a stand to watch them if this joke is not clear).

Konami’s Metal Gear Online Update Brings New Map and Old Snake

Konami recently announced that they will be releasing an update titled “Scene Expansion” for Metal Gear Online. Inside will be a new map and an old face.

The new map is called “Icebound Inferno” and oddly resembles the Shadow Moses level from MGS4, and the old face is none other than Old Snake. Enjoy.

Metal Gear Solid coming to PSN

Joystiq reports that the classic PS1 title Metal Gear Solid is coming to the PlayStation Network as a downloadable title. The game will be coming to the North American PSN on June 18 for just $9.99, but there’s no word on the European release just yet. Since Metal Gear Solid is pretty much the best game that was ever released for the PS1, this is a great chance for those of us who foolishly sold their MGS1 disc in their naive youth. Of course, that doesn’t apply to me. I live in Europe.

GDC09: ‘The Next MGS’ Awaits Us, May Star Raiden

Hideo Kojima, creator of the famed Metal Gear Solid series, held a keynote at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco today. Towards the end of the conference, he revealed his next mission: ‘The Next MGS’.

In the image, we see a person who looks like it’s definitely Raiden turning his back towards the text. So the next Metal Gear Solid awaits us, and Raiden may be the star this time around.

Metal Gear Solid Animated Short: Cold Blooded

CliffyB Calls Metal Gear Solid “Passive Entertainment”

Cliff Bleszinski, lead game designer of Gears of War 2, cites Metal Gear Solid as the kind of game Epic doesn’t want to make. What were his exact words? Read on to find out.

In a recent interview with IGN, CliffyB was quoted in saying the following:

“Metal Gear Solid is our example of the game we’re not doing. Passive entertainment is on its way out.”

The story itself is just IGN’s preview of Gears multiplayer, which is interesting, but CliffyB’s quote kinda came out of nowhere. Am I sensationalizing this, or did CliffyB just totally dis Metal Gear Solid?
