PS Vita Mortal Kombat is Vicious – First Brutal Gameplay Footage

The PlayStation Blog put up a video which features the brutal gameplay of Mortal Kombat on the PS Vita. Never before has Kombat on a portable screen looked so good. MK on the Vita involves not just the standard use of buttons, but also includes the use of the touchscreen and other specific features.

The PS Vita version adds an ambitious array of extra content, starting with every piece of DLC ever released on PS3. That means you’ll be able to play as Freddy Krueger, Kenshi, Rain, and Skarlet from day one, and select MK1 and MK2 retro-styled costumes to drape over your male and female ninja characters. The Vita version sweetens the pot with 15 more exclusive costumes, including MK3-styled garb for the ninjas.

Mortal Kombat ‘Komplete Edition’ Announced, Drops February 28th

NetherRealm Studios has announced a Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition which will release in North America on February 28th.

The Komplete Edition includes all previously released character DLC packs (Freddy, Scarlet, Rain, and Kenshi), the Mortal Kombat: Songs Inspired by the Warriors album, a kode to download the 1995 Mortal Kombat feature film, fifteen klassic fighter skins and three klassic fatalites for Reptile, Scorpion and Sub-Zero.

If you didn’t purchase the original release, this gives you the perfect opportunity to own the komplete edition of 2011′s Fighter of the Year.

You should have acted. They’re already here. The gaming world told of their return. E3 was merely a delay… ’til the time after PAX opened. When the scribes of RipTen would spill their own thoughts. Behold!!

Let’s get the fanboy nonsense out of the way first.

These are the best games of the year, by platform:

The Gears of War series is synonymous with the Xbox 360. If Master Chief is the faceless hero of the Xbox fanbase, then Marcus Fenix and company are the gritty, brutal, excellently detailed faces of it. We’ve given each iteration of the Gears series a perfect score because the quality of the games that Epic releases never cease to impress the hardened Xbox fanboys and newcomers alike. The graphics, gameplay and over the top attitude of Gears of War 3 is what makes it the showpiece for Microsoft’s gaming console, and the best Xbox 360 exclusive.

Nathan Drake is a man on a mission. A mission to prove that each chapter of the Uncharted series can push the PS3 to its limits and impress even the most jaded of console gamers. Naughty Dog not only excels at creating the most jaw-dropping visuals for the Playstation platform, but also tells stories that make us fall in love with their characters each and every time. They’ve once again succeeded at crafting an immersive world filled with action, adventure and intrigue that will keep us coming back to the wild world of Uncharted every single time.

Geralt of Rivia. A man’s man. A ladies’ man. CDProjekt’s adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s tortured protagonist is something literary fans dream of. A world torn from the pages of books beyond anything you could ever imagine. So richly detailed and magnificent to behold in every way that it puts games produced by legendary publishers to shame on a budget infinitely inferior. A game that improved upon its predecessor in every way. The deep and branching quest narrative combined with fluid combat and breathtaking visuals not only made The Witcher 2 one of the best RPGs of the year, but its rig-breaking technical requirements rewarded only those most dedicated to PC gaming. The world needs more developers like CDProjekt, and more games like The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

All we ever wanted since Nintendo revealed its motion controlled console was to swing our swords in the land of Hyrule. Twilight Princess gave us a taste of true motion controlled swordplay, but we wanted something entirely new. Luckily, the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto did not let us down. When Skyward Sword finally arrived on the Wii, it came with rich visuals, picture perfect controls and a story that made us fall in love with The Legend of Zelda all over again. A worthy successor to the Zelda franchise in every way, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword might be the best reason to own a Nintendo Wii yet.

Did somebody say Miyamoto? You betcha. We were all sad to learn that Super Mario 3D Land wouldn’t launch alongside the Nintendo 3DS, but when it finally arrived, we let them slide. A near perfect combination of Super Mario Brothers 3 and Super Mario 64, 3D land had something for everyone. Not only did it make great use of the 3D visuals and 3DS controls, but it has difficulty levels to challenge hardcore fans and please casual gamers alike. Is Super Mario 3D Land the best reason to own a Nintendo 3DS? It’s certainly one of them.

Nobody has pushed the envelope in mobile gaming quite like Chair Entertainment and Epic Games with Infinity Blade. Unmatched visuals and addictive gameplay provide a true console-quality experience on a mobile platform. With Infinity Blade II, everything was taken to the next level and we were once again floored by what these developers have made possible on a mobile platform and what the Unreal technology is capable of.

However, some of the best games of 2011 were download-only.

These are the year’s best downloadable games:

They changed the name to Iron Brigade, but that didn’t take away from one of the best downloadable titles of the year. Trenched was the first game to truly blend elements of Tower Defense and Action successfully. Not only that, it had tons of loot drops to further enhance your mechs and the full game was able to be played cooperatively with up to three other players. Combine those features with Double Fine’s signature comedic writing and you have an XBLA title to remember.

More of the same? Not exactly. Q Games not only added plenty of new content to their microbial sized shooter, they also added competitive multiplayer which made the game even that much more addictive and challenging. Rescuing survivors from puzzling alien innards has never been this much fun, and few PSN exclusives are this addicting. This is a game every PSN user should own, as well as pretty much everything else Pixel Junk.

The kid probably wouldn’t care if he got this award. Too busy rebuilding the bastion he’d be. What makes Bastion the best downloadable game of the year? Besides the fact that it was great on XBLA, PSN and PC, there was damn near nothing bad anyone could say about it. A perfect blend of hack n’ slash RPG gameplay topped off with tight controls and a story told by the coolest narrator this side of the calamity, Bastion is game that’s impossible not to like. Throw in a visually stunning world that comes together piece by piece and plenty of achievements for the hunter in all of us, and you’ve got the clear winner of downloadable game of the year. The kid should be proud.

MK Legacy Director Gets Green Light On Full Blown Mortal Kombat Film

It was only a matter of time.

First the viral success of his Mortal Kombat movie trailer.

Then the success of his Mortal Kombat: Legacy web series.

Now, Kevin Tancharoen has finally been given a green light by New Line Cinema to bring his gritty interpretation of the Mortal Kombat universe to the big screen.

“It’s really important that we show we can bring our game properties to movies instead of just the other way around,” said Warner home entertainment President Kevin Tsujihara.

New Line president Toby Emmerich said the idea to do the movie came entirely from the work Tancharoen has done:

“The new game and the online shorts prompted us to consider a reboot of a brand we hadn’t been actively thinking about”

The movie will mirror MK Legacy and will offer a more gritty and realistic take on the Mortal Kombat characters which Tancharoen has become known for. (White Raiden?)

Mortal Kombat Sales Top 3 Million Making it the Best Selling Fighter of the Year!

FLAWLESS VICTORY! Warner has announced that Mortal-Kombat has sold over 3 million units – making it the highest selling fighting game of the year!

Pretty impressive sales figures considering former owner Midway went belly up in 2009. Briefly the future of Mortal Kombat was in limbo until resurrected by NeatherRealm Studios and Warner.

NetherRealm Studios is delighted about the impressive sales.

“NetherRealm Studios delivered a high quality game which has exceeded our sales goals. We’d like to thank our entire team and all of our partners for their innovative campaigns and tremendous support of Mortal Kombat, as the game sales continue to grow,” said Warner Interactive boss Martin Tremblay.

Ed Boon added:

“All of us at NetherRealm Studios are very excited that players have embraced Mortal Kombat. The game was a labor of love for us and we could not be more pleased with its performance. Fan reaction to this latest installment has made all of our hard work worth it.”

New Mortal Kombat Freddy Krueger Trailer Haunts Your Dreams

In honor of the official release of infamous dream stalker Freddy Krueger, the final DLC character for Mortal Kombat, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has released a trailer that gives players an inside look into how Freddy came to enter the notorious Mortal Kombat coliseum.

In an effort to return to the dream realm from where he came, Freddy must face-off against the game’s legendary warriors and prove that, even as a mortal, he and his demonically-powered razor gloves can take down the toughest competition.

New Sub-Zero Skins Arriving August 9th for Free

As crazy as it sounds, Freddy Krueger will be slashing his way to Mortal Kombat’s roster next week, on August 9th. It was quite a big reveal at this year’s Comic-Con and it certainly had many fans wondering: how in the blue Hell? Well, it shouldn’t take too long to see just how Freddy does essentially fit well into MK’s blood-soaked cast. But enough about that; I’m here to tell you about some free DLC (!) coming our way next week to complement Freddy’s, not free, debut.

Compatibility Pack #4 will go live on August 9th and with it will once again be some free skins for a couple of characters. This time, it’s for both Sub-Zeros in the game. Cyber will be going Retro and the normal Sub’ will be going Klassic and unmasked, as seen in the picture above. You can also check out both characters in action, donning their new attire, in the announcement trailer below.

Mortal Kombat Freddy Krueger DLC Trailer Is F***ing Brutal!!

Warner Bros. have finally revealed the fourth and final downloadable fighter for Mortal Kombat, which is none other than your neighborhood horror buddy, Freddy Krueger. The reveal trailer shows just how fucking brutal Freddy will be, you don’t want to miss this.

Freddy will sink his claws into your skull when he arrives on XBL and PSN, August 9th for 400MSP ($4.99)

Rain’s Stormy Mortal Kombat Vignette Falls In

Another Mortal Kombat Fighter has gotten the vignette treatment. This time it’s Rain. As the video claims, he was orphaned by Shao Kahn and raised as a great warrior for the resistance.

There’s not much you can say after watching the new trailer from NetherRealm Studios, except that Rain looks like he will kick some serious ass!

Mortal Kombat Kenshi DLC Trailer Will Poke Your Eye Out

Warner Bros. Interactive and NetherRealm Studios have showcased their next DLC kombatant.

Mortal Kombat fans get ready because the second kombatant has been granted a trailer and his name is Kenshi, and he’s kicking some serious ass. The downloadable blind warrior will be available for 400MSP ($4.99) on Tuesday July 5th for Xbox LIVE and Wednesday July 6th on PSN. Alternatively players can purchase the Mortal Kombat Season Pass for 1200MSP ($14.99) and gain access to all four DLC characters as they’re released at no extra charge. Check out the trailer below:

Scarlet’s Blood Red Mortal Kombat DLC Trailer

Blood is red…and so is Scarlet. Scarlet will be playable in the upcoming DLC, and as you can see, she can be quite bloody. Expect the DLC to be available in a few short weeks and be ready to learn more from Ripten’s coverage of E3.

New Mortal Kombat DLC Trailer Gets “Klassic”

Do you long for the days where Mortal Kombat was simple? Do you miss the old “palette swapped” outfits for the all of the ninjas? Well you won’t have to go without the old school costumes and fatalities any longer!

June 7th will see the release of some Klassic Kostumes and fatalities for the cast. Reptile, Scorpion, Jade, Sub-Zero, Ermac, Kitana, Mileena will get new kostumes with Reptile, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero will get their old fatalities back.

The DLC will hit Xbox Live and PSN on June 7th and will be available for 400 MS Points or $5. In the meantime, enjoy the new trailer:

Mortal Kombat Hotfix Notes Detailed – Nerfing All Around

With the first major game patch currently in the works for Mortal Kombat due for release in the next couple of weeks, it comes as a surprise that a stealth hotfix has been made live, changing the damage powers of some characters whilst improving others.

Check out the changes made below, and keep in mind not all of them are permanent or final:

Reduced the damage on some special moves.

Increased the damage scaling after Kitana’s Enhanced ground fan toss.

Adjusted some juggle’s damage scaling.

Reduced the damage on some basic combos that were doing too much damage without using any meter.

Increased Sheeva’s damage output for several of her moves and attacks.

Temporarily Changed around some of Sonya’s fighting style properties to reduce her ability to lock someone down in block stun.

Changed Kano’s Towards Front Kick to a low block.

Reduced the recovery on Kano’s Upball to be closer to Johnny Cage’s Flip Kick recovery.

Increased the damage of some of Baraka’s special moves and attacks.

It is easier to juggle combo after hitting someone with Baraka’s chopchop on the ground.

Increased the damage scaling on a frozen opponent.

Baraka’s Away Front Kick, Front Punch combo is now a true popup.

Reduced some of Reptile’s combo damage.

Reduced some of Kung Lao’s combo and overall damage.

Mortal Kombat Online Won’t Require Kombat Pass Until PS Store is Back

Due to obvious issues regarding the Playstation Network and Mortal Kombat 9‘s Kombat Pass, until the Playstation Store is up and working again (next week hopefully) you will able to play without one.

Johnny Cage had this to say:

Due to the recent PSN outage, Mortal Kombat for PS3 will now be playable online without need for the Kombat Pass. This is a temporary solution that will only be available while Playstation Store is unavailable. Once PlayStation Store is back up, users will be able to enter the Kombat Pass code included with Mortal Kombat or purchase a Kombat Pass for $9.99.

Mortal Kombat DLC to be Released Within the Next Month

Ed Boon, creator of Mortal Kombat, has revealed that DLC will be available for the newest installment of the game “in the next few weeks.” It’s reported to contain a patch for balance changes, another playable character: Skarlett, and some other free stuff.

He told G4:

“We really want to make the patch coincide with the first DLC that’s going to come out, so the Skarlett character is going to contain, not only her, but some free stuff and all the patch changes for balancing… Certainly within the next month, but the next few weeks I’d say.”

Skarlett being in Mortal Kombat 9 isn’t really news — she was announced on March 27, and it wasn’t even surprising at that point since she had been outed earlier than that.

But yay, more girls. Hopefully Skarlett will kick ass and have an awesome fatality or two.

Warner Bros Announces Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has announced Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection for XBLA, PC and PSN.

The collection, which includes the original Mortal Kombat arcade trilogy (Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3), will release this summer for $9.99 on PlayStation Network or 800 Microsoft Points.

“We are very excited to finally have the first three Mortal Kombat games available in one download package for long-time and new fans to play,” said Ed Boon, Creative Director, NetherRealm Studios. “With the release of our 2011 Mortal Kombat, and its return to 2D game play, players have been asking for these classic titles and we are happy to deliver them.”

In addition to the collection, “Performance Designed Products” will be producing a themed fight stick to go with the game, featuring a download code for the title.

Dingleberry, Crackspackler and Sphincterface Among Hundreds of Words Banned from Mortal Kombat

A data file enthusiast has torn apart the configuration file for the latest Mortal Kombat game and found a bunch of ridiculous words banned from use in MK9 text communications.

So whilst it’s okay to use Scorpion’s fataility to cut someones airborne skull in half, it’s frowned upon and forbidden to use terms like:

skin flute, bunk monkey, balls in your mouth, fudge packer, cocksmoker, sphincterface, deez nuts, cum dumpster, monkey humper, mother fucker, mud people, muff diver, dune coon, penis breath, pussyjuice, rug muncher, rectal redneck, tar baby, tit fucker, aaaand Bin Laden.

Oh, you also can’t use the word “murder” which I can’t help but feel is slightly ironic considering the voice-over guy yells “FINISH HIM!” at the end of every fight.

Mortal Kombat Creator Ed Boon “Gets Caged” in MK Legacy, Episode 3

How cool is this? The Noob in Noob Saibot himself has a cameo in the latest episode of the Mortal Kombat web series, Mortal Kombat: Legacy.

If you haven’t yet seen episodes 1 and 2, do yourself a favor and check them out HERE.

Then prepare to “Get Caged” with Episode 3 starring, you guessed it, Johnny Cage:

That’s right, Ed Boon and 1:20 and a signature nut punch from Johnny at 2:14 – Nice.
