PS Home ‘Social Games Plaform’ Update Launches Tomorrow – What Will Change

Sony has announced it will to launch its ‘Social Games Platform’ reboot of PlayStation Home tomorrow. The changes are designed to convert PlayStation Home into a viable social games platform.

The update will include four new theme-based districts :

Action
Sportswalk
Adventure
Pier Park – Nearby the Home Theatre and Home Mall.

Sony will also provide five new Free-to-play games for Home. They include:

Bootleggers ’29 – Set in the seedy underbelly of the Roaring Twenties, this PlayStation Home exclusive first-person shooter found in the Action District pits cops vs. criminals in a Prohibition-era game of Capture the Cask. Boasting real-time multiplayer action, a variety of vintage weapons and unlockable rewards, and the unique ability to play as your PlayStation Home avatar, Bootleggers ’29 is a 100% free-to-play game that introduces a classic narrative to the modern shooter genre.
PlayStation Home Hold ‘Em – A series of backroom poker tables hosted in the brand new Sportswalk district, PlayStation Home Hold ‘Em squares players off in a no-holds-barred, winner-take-all battle of the bluffs. Only the best of the best will progress to the high stakes tables and collect all the prizes in this free version of the wildly-popular Texas Hold ‘Em card game.
PlayStation Home Sports Trivia – Test your sports expertise against the PlayStation Home community and unlock a series of themed rewards in this massive sports trivia game, found in the Sportswalk. New Skyrim Screens Show off an Assassin Finisher, Draugr Lord and Aurora Borealis

As I sit here and work away tirelessly on my next hands-on preview of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, the least I could do for you in the meantime is provide you with some new visual imagery to whet thine appetite.

Behold!!

What we have here are many things. First and foremost, that Assassin style slow mo stealth kill screenshot is amazing. Whoever capped that, you have my thanks. Next up we have a magnificent Aurora Borealis from the Northern Coast. We also have shots of the Marshlands and the Tundra as well as a lovely shot of an Orc guard… guarding something. There’s also a shot of a standing stone of Magicka and a rather intimidating looking screenshot of a Draugr Lord thrown in for good measure. I’ve also included that shot from last week of a bound bow being fired at a bear, because it’s quite awesome and I intend to find it ASAP when I finally have the full game in my hands.

Last but not least we have a shot of a guard standing in the southernmost town of Riften, which was clearly named after RipTen.

Behold Square’s Photorealistic New Game Tech (Video/Screens)

Looks as if Crytek may have some competition on the horizon.

Square Enix has detailed their new “Luminous” technology and has been kind enough to bestow some video and screens upon the world as well.

They’re going for maximum DX 11 realism and are pulling out all the stops to create lifelike environments. So far all we’ve seen are urban environments, but they do look quite “real” thus far.

Looking good… so far. Only time will tell what Square uses this engine for, but I’d like to throw out a Deus Ex 1 remake as a suggestion ^__^

Square Releases Stunning New Final Fantasy XIII-2 Screens

Square Enix has released a selection of screens taken for the upcoming sequel Final Fantasy XIII-2 and they look predictably awesome. FF XIII-2 is set to be a direct sequel to 2010′s Final Fantasy XIII and will improve upon it’s predecessor’s visuals and introduce an improved combat system.

UK Retailer: “Pre-owned Marketplace Good for the Industry”

Ian Shepherd, CEO of UK retailer GAME, has said that despite repeated claims from software publishers that pre-owned games hurt them, the trade-in market can only be a good thing.

Publishers have even begun implementing features to prevent pre-owned players from having the full game (passes for online play, for example), but Shepherd says that even they are coming round to the idea that trade-ins are going to stay.

He said:

“I think, through conversations with developers and platform owners, that there is a growing realisation that a healthy pre-owned marketplace is good for the whole industry.

“It has made the mint marketplace more affordable and has kept people in that marketplace. There has been endless debate over pre-owned versus mint, but my view is that a healthy pre-owned and trade-in marketplace – which we are largely the people who are involved in driving – is good for the whole industry.”

Brink Updates Incoming – First DLC Will Be Free!

Some people have been experiencing “issues” with Brink. Bethesda and Splash Damage are working to address these issues asap and since they’re so f**king cool, they’re also giving us the first bit of DLC free. /woot

According to BethSoft:

We have been working on updates for Brink to address the lag issue that some people have reported they were experiencing.

In the meantime, we have made a configuration change for 360 users (which will be available to the PS3, once PSN is up) that alters the number of human players when matchmaking for “Campaign” and most ‘Freeplay’ modes to eight total human players. This new configuration will allow those connecting to and hosting matches (particularly those with lower upstream bandwidth) to more reliably find and connect to quality hosts via the match-making process – resulting in less lag and more fun. This change is being rolled out today and will be available worldwide.

For players who haven’t been experienced lag, we’ll still support 8v8 on all maps via a new ‘Big Teams’ configuration in Freeplay, and through custom settings in Private matches. There is no download required for this update and it will be available automatically the next time you log in to play Brink and launch either campaign or standard Freeplay matches. This should allow players new to the Ark as well as veterans to find quality matches suitable to their preferred play style.

We are also releasing an incremental update for PC players via Steam that addresses AI, GPU, and server issues. See the full release notes on Steam. Many of these fixes are being included in the full update for the 360 and PS3 versions.

We would like to thank you for supporting Brink and for your continued feedback. To show our appreciation for your support of Brink, we will be making the first DLC for Brink available for free when it is released. This DLC is planned for June and will offer additional maps and new content for players. We’ll continue to provide announcements about the next title update, as well as the first DLC release as that information becomes available.

New Shadows of the Damned Screens Look Scary Good – Release Date Pushed Back

Once upon a time within the twisted minds of Shinji Mikami and Suda51 there lived a nightmare. An awesome looking 3rd person shooter nightmare called Shadows of the Damned.

I’ve seen Shadows of the Damned, I’ve played Shadows of the Damned, and Shadows of the Damned is bad ass.

Shadows of the Damned will now be out on June 21st. This is good news because it was originally supposed to launch on June 7th… right in the middle of E3. #DERP .

New Ocarina of Time 3DS Features Announced

Some time ago a number of ‘new features’ were announced for the Nintendo 3DS remake of perhaps one of gamings greatest titles.

Up until this point however nothing much was known about these new features, but RipTen can now pull off the mysterious veil and reveal what they actually are.

First cab off the rank is “Boss Challenge” mode, a type of gauntlet minigame that allows you to replay all the bosses you’ve encountered throughout the course of the main storyline.

You can also verse them all in a row, however it’s currently not known if you will receive any reward or unlock for your hard work. I think that’s a pretty logical addition, though.

The second new addition is a bunch of in-game video guides that will help newcomers to the series get to grips with in-game mechanics and features. As a long time fan of the game and franchise I can see this being a welcome addition, as I still have trouble with that fucking Water Temple!

Either way, new features or not, Ocarina of Time 3D is going to be a beautiful title and is the sole reason I’m picking up a Nintendo 3DS.

GDC11: Bungie’s Next Game Confirmed to be an MMO

During the Bungie presentation at GDC, lead network engineer David Aldrige confirmed Bungie’s next game will be an MMO.

While very stingy on details, Aldridge made sure to point out it would not be a “WoW in Space”. This was in response to earlier rumors. The game has previous been described as “having something for everyone”.

This will be the first game to be created by Bungie and published by Activision as part of their 10 year multiplatform agreement.

I’ve got to admit, it seems that Bungie is going out of their way to make something different with this one. It will be interesting to finally find out what this game will be.

GDC11: New Dead Island Screens – Zombies Have Never Looked This Good

You have to admit, these new Dead Island screens kill and the Zombie Apocalypse has never looked better. You’ve got to respect the level of detail and variety of zombies.

As we revealed yesterday, Dead Island will not allow you to kill kids (not even of the zombie variety).

Well anyway, developer Deep Silver seems to know what they are doing, just look at these screens!

inFAMOUS 2 will have Mission Creator – Check Out New Trailer

The big reveal for the Ps3 at the GDC today is the inclusion of a mission creator mode in inFAMOUS 2. In much the same as other PlayStation greats LittleBigPlanet and Modnation Racers, inFAMOUS 2 will allow you to ‘Play Create Share’.

Gamers will have tremendous customization from tweaking Cole’s powers, creating stealth missions and creating battle scenarios between different sets of characters. Players are even able to set up mini-games and gametypes. Characters, enemies, and creatures available to developers will be available to player in this new mode.

In line with the ‘Play Create Share’ designation, missions created can be shared online with the inFAMOUS community. Sucker Punch has arranged a Beta scheduled for April to test this new feature. The Beta is limited and sign-ups start March 14th.

All I can say is WOW!

Kevin Butler Plays Killzone 3 with PS Move While Simultaneously Working (Video)

At this point nothing about Kevin Butler should surprise you. Sony’s Vice President of…well, everything, has entertained with a successful advertisement campaign, spoken at E3 and most recently, retweeted the PS3′s Jailbreak code (D’oh).

In his most recent commercial the newly appointed “First Person Sensai” displays his extraordinary method of Working while playing Killzone 3 with the Move Sharp Shooter for 5-6 hours a day. I have much to learn from you sensai.

New Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood DLC to Feature Leonardo Da Vinci (Detailed with Screens and Trailer)

The upcoming Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood DLC pack will be called The Da Vinci Disappearance and will focus on Ezio’s famous friend Leonardo Da Vinci.

The Da Vinci Disappearance will include both single-player and multiplayer content including a new multiplayer map, four new characters and two new game modes.

The plot of the singe player adventure goes as follows: After the fall of the Borgias in Rome, Leonardo Da Vinci is kidnapped by the Hermeticists, an underground cult dedicated to transforming mankind; Ezio will embark on a “relentless quest” to recover stolen paintings in order to find the inventor, discovering two new locations and “two new gameplay features” along the way.

The new map is called Alhambra and is described as a “lush environment” set in Spain’s Albaicin of Granada, and it will provide multileveled indoor/outdoor areas.

New characters include Dama Rossa, the Knight, the Marquis and the Pariah.

The two new gameplay modes the Leonardo DLC will include are Escort and Assassinate. In Escort mode, two teams of four players compete to protect their own VIP target or assassinate the other team’s. Assassinate mode includes 6-8 players fighting in a deathmatch for ten minute rounds.

The Da Vinci Disappearance will cost 800 MSP or $9.99.

Expect this to be a big hit. Leonardo Da Vinci is both a very popular video game and real life character. This is a day one buy for me!

Noob Saibot gets the Mortal Kombat Trailer Treatment

For those of you who didn’t know, the name “Noob Saibot” is made up of the last names of MK creators Ed Boon and John Tobias spelled backwards. The character was introduced in Mortal Kombat 2 as a hidden character that required 50 consecutive round victories to unlock. He was a palette swap silouette of scorpion and displayed the same special moves. His character and move set evolved. In Mortal Kombat 4, his true identity was finally revealed as Bi-Han – the original Sub-Zero.
