Cammie Dunaway Doesn’t Know Anything About Games, But That’s Okay!
by Keane Ng on October 3, 2008

Cammie Dunaway, for the uninformed, is Nintendo’s exec VP of sales and marketing. You might remember her from Nintendo’s E3 conference - you know “Puppies are cute!! Wii Sports Resort!! Frisbees!” Yeah, that’s her. Anyhow, if it wasn’t obvious enough, Ms. Dunaway’s not exactly in touch with your average Game Fuel-drinking hardcore gamer, but in a pleasant little Q&A with Wired she made it even more clear that she doesn’t really know much about games, but that’s okay, because she thinks games are super and Nintendo’s super, too. (I’m being snide, but I have to admit there is something winning about her relentless positivity.)
Nevertheless - when asked what she knew about the Punch Out franchise, Dunaway replied:
I know that it was really popular 15 years ago, and that it’s been sitting there with latent demand. It’s got the … who’s the big character … Big Eddie.
She meant King Hippo. Mash the jump for more tidbits. Read more…

USA Sweeps Pokémon World Championships — Proof We are the Biggest Dorks on the Planet
by Dan Landis on August 21, 2008

The 2008 Pokémon World Championships took place this past weekend, along with the first-ever Video Game Showdown. Over 400 players from nearly 30 countries qualified for and competed in the Championships, but the United States swept first place in all three divisions of the Trading Card Game (TCG) finals. Additionally, the U.S. won the Junior Video Game Showdown title, while a kid from Hiroshima, Japan, won the Senior division (though I’m not sure if it was revenge-driven or if his mutated genes gave him an edge). Nintendo’s Wiimote Hit with Patent Infringement Lawsuit by Hillcrest Labs
by Rangebar Merani on August 21, 2008
Nintendo just keeps getting tapped with patent troubles, with its highly successful Wii now the target of a patent lawsuit from Hillcrest Labs.
Hillcrest claims that its patent for “a handheld three-dimensional pointing device” and a vague description of a “navigation interface display system that graphically organizes content for display on a television” apparently predates Nintendo’s Wiimote.
On Wednesday, Maryland-based Hillcrest Labs announced that it has filed a patent infringement with the U.S. International Trade Commission, as well as another patent infringement suit in a U.S. District Court in Maryland regarding Nintendo’s Wiimote.
Hillcrest Labs does have a product based on this technology, called The Loop remote (pictured above), based on what the company calls “Freespace” motion control technology. It seems clear that The Loop remote is much different from the Wiimote, and its hard to believe that something so vague as “a 3D pointing device” could actually best Nintendo in a court of law. First Trailer and Screenshots for Shaun White Snowboarding
by Demi Adejuyigbe on August 14, 2008
Announced at Nintendo’s lackluster E3 conference and remembered as that game that was somehow related to the internet’s most famous soccer mom breaking her wrist, Shaun White Snowboarding is a snowboarding game sponsored by pro boarder Shaun White. It utilizes the Wii Fit’s gyration/motion-sensing technology to make you feel like you’re actually jumping up and down on a $90 box thing jumping off of the Alps on a snowboard. Well, in the Wii version, that is.
Not being one to show the least visually-appealing version, today Ubisoft released the first trailer and screenshots for the Playstation 3/Xbox 360 versions of the game, which you can see in the gallery after the jump. Read more…
Sega CEO: ‘Flood Of Crap Games On Wii’
by Kev Lochun on August 14, 2008

Man-on-top Simon Jeffrey has rounded on developers for drowning Wii in below-par tat, but is confident that publishers – starting with Sega, naturally – can put that to rights.
Chewing the fat over at Venture Beat, he says:
“There is a lot of crap coming out for the Wii in general. But if it’s not a good game, it doesn’t sell. That flood of crap will die down as publishers become more coherent.”
Let’s hope this isn’t a case of Simon Jeffrey misspeaking again. He also lets loose on the tug-of-war between Sony and Microsoft for Wii ‘graduates’, putting everyone’s favourite game – Mad World – on the frontline for reaching out to the more hardcore Wii audience.
“No one is doing that. With Mad World from Platinum Games, we are trying to show that millions of Wii gamers want to move on to mature games. They don’t have to have an Xbox 360 to do that.”
There’s more to come from Sega when it comes to Wii – Jeffrey just loves the accessories:
“We are fans of the Wii Zapper. Our Ghost Squad game keeps selling. We have more Zapper games going. The same for the Wii Balance Board, although we have nothing announced yet.”
Never say never. Nothing may be announced *yet*, but Leipzig GC is only round the corner. Read more…
Nintendo Skewered By Webcomics
by Wade Larson on August 5, 2008

Webcomics often provide niche interests with humor that isn’t found in the local Sunday funnies. But they can also serve another important purpose: the editorial.
A picture is worth a thousand words, or so they say, so a multi-panel comic must be worth bonus points. And this VGcats comic definitely gets a high score for its scathing portrayal of Nintendo.

Nintendo Cracking Down On Piracy Devices
by Andrew Podolsky on July 30, 2008

Nintendo has claimed that they now rule seven seas, working with law enforcement agencies in a number of countries to squash piracy in the form of the R4 memory card. The R4 card allows for unofficial programs to be played on the Nintendo DS, including emulators and pirated games.
According to Nintendo, they’ve now seized 30,000 copyright-infringing piracy devices. Now that’s a lot of booty! Check out the full statement from Nintendo after the jump. Read more…
Wii 2: Iwata Confirms Nintendo’s Next Console Already In Development

From the “perpetual next-gen” department comes this totally expected tidbit. The old news: Nintendo’s working on a follow-up to the Wii. The new news: Confirmation comes directly from President “It print money!” Iwata.
Iwata told Forbes magazine, “We are always preparing for the next hardware. We are under development. But the hardware is a kind of box that consumers reluctantly buy in order to play our games.” Read more…
Microsoft & Nintendo Peripheral Partnership? Reggie Says “We’ll See”
by Chad Lakkis on July 21, 2008
Introducing the Xbox Wii60
At about the three minute mark in the GameTrailers video interview (shown below) with Nintendo President, Reggie Fils-Aime, Geoff Keighley began to press Reggie for a response regarding what he believed to be Microsoft’s implied interest in a Nintendo partnership, allowing Xbox 360 users to someday wield a Wiimote like device.
Reggie politely danced around the question for a few a few seconds, before uttering the words “we’ll see”. He then stated that John is a big Nintendo supporter, and while he would “always take John’s call”, he felt that the vision of the two companies was “fundamentally different”. Read more…
In Defense of Wii Music
by Emily Balistrieri on July 21, 2008

If you’ve been keeping up with Ripten’s E3 coverage, you may have come across the majority opinion on Wii Music…
Range: no rhythm, no tone, weren’t following each other, didn’t know if you were on pace
Chad: mass mayhem
Andrew: wasn’t working, sounded like a mess, all over the place, sort of hitting the buttons whenever he [Miyamoto] felt like it
Jon: could’ve given you all sticks and been like, “Have a great time…”
Those were quotes from the day 2 podcast following Nintendo’s press conference. Ever since that time, I’ve been meaning to introduce a second opinion. I’ve put in my demo time and come up with not complete and utter adulation, but at least a different understanding and a sense of where the fun lies. Hit the jump for these thoughts AND a Youtube of Miyamoto’s presentation. Read more…
