SCEA has announced that its 99¢ movie rental program is coming back to the PlayStation Store in both the United States and Canada. Beginning today, PlayStation Network users can rent a selection of movies and TV shows for 99¢ and $1.99 (HD) through the video section of the PlayStation Store.

The storefronts will refresh the content available with new titles every Tuesday, and the movies discounted the previous week will return to their original price. Titles included in the first week of the 99¢ movie rental program in the US include:

The 2011 PSN outage was a dark day for Sony gamers and many feared the PS3 would never recover. Sony wised up and realized giving free games and a month of PS Plus would help and created the  Welcome Back Program. How successful was this program in “rekindling the activity and trust” of PSN users?  According to a report by EEDAR’s Jesse Divinch, very successful:

“While it may initially appear that the increase in downloads were due to the free offerings, a deeper analysis indicates otherwise, with the four Welcome Back titles removed, users indicated 15 percent of their purchases in June 2011 were PlayStation Network digital titles, compared to 13 percent in March. This positive trend… lends to the notion that consumers can be forgiving if a company is sincere and authentic with its consumers.”

During the program all four titles offered as part of  the US Welcome Back package ranked among the top 25 acquired titles during the first three weeks of the program and InFAMOUS ranked as June 2011’s with LittleBigPlanet landing in 5th place.  Moreover, 17% of IGN users indicated they acquired a PSN digital title in June 2011, which is up from 13% in March 2011 before Sony was forced to bring down the PSN due to hackers.

“Among users claiming title acquisition in June 2011, the PlayStation 3 had a 44% share among 7th generation home consoles, up from 40% prior to the PlayStation Network outage. As with the previous analysis, removing the four Welcome Back titles resulted in a 1% increase in market share from March 2011. While this increase in market share is small, the fact that the PlayStation 3 market share increased both with and without the free offerings indicates that the Welcome Back Program likely boosted sales of other paid content, specifically those available either exclusively through download or those that had a physical or digital purchase options,”

Reports are coming in that the Playstation Network might be receiving an all new makeover.

According to Reg Hardware, Sony is currently working on a complete makeover of the Playsation Network service. This new look will supposedly step up to the likes of Xbox Live and Steam opposed to what it currently offers.

These changes will affect the Playstation Store rather than the XMB itself. Reports claim Sony is currently market-testing the new design to de-clutter the screen in which the new look is ”an aesthetic layout with logically marked sections and rolodex lists”. Features include an all new live search system for both movies and games which will features details such as: developers, casting,  genre, etc to the right hand side of the screen.

Similar to XBL, Sony plans to add an all new “Deal of the Week” section as well. Among all that, Sony plans to scrap their currently blue color scheme in exchange for “ultra bright colors on a black background”.

If these reports are true it will be a little disappointing to know only the Playstation Store will be affected instead of the full service. Especially considering these reports claim Sony wants to up it’s service to be on par with XBL, which has received quite a few makeovers itself. Including one this fall.

The crackdown has begun and it’s serious. Anonymous affiliated hackers have gone too far in attacking Sony, Mastercard, various government websites in recent months and the world is cracking down.

Spanish Police arrested three suspected senior members of the Spanish faction of the online hacker collective Anonymous. Among what authorities found was a computer server responsible for helping launch attacks against the PlayStation Store, two large Spanish banks, Italian energy company Enel, as well as of the governments of Egypt, Libya, and Iran.

The bust was part of a larger global crackdown. The suspects were arrested on suspicion of causing economic damage, breaching privacy laws and are currently where they belong – behind bars.

Finally after a month of oppression by dastardly misogynistic hackers it seems (at least for now) PlayStation Gamers finally have everything set just as it is meant to be!  The PS Store is back and everyone can rejoice!

Finally access to the “Welcome Back Package” should begin shortly which will include a smorgesborg of benefits I will detail below:

Two of a select group of PS3 games:

And two of a selective group of PSP titles:

If you have a PS3 and PSP you can download two games from each. The games will be available for the 30 days after the Store returns and will be counted as permanent purchases.

All non-current Playstation Plus PSN users get a free 30-day subscription.  Current PS+ subscribers will receive a free 60-day subscription extension.  Current members of Music Unlimited Premium Trial subscription members will receive a free 30-day extension of the free premium subscription.  Finally, a free 30-day + time lost extension will be given to current Music Unlimited Premium/Basic members.

As for non-membership related bonuses, Sony will do an “On Us” Movie Rental weekend, providing a select number of titles for all users to view all Weekend long through the PS Store.  Also, 100 virtual items for Playstation Home will be made available free of charge.  These 100 items do not include the free feature upgrades that will be issued within the same timeframe.  Sony hasn’t listed what the specific items will be, or what they will pertain to.  A date for the free movie rental weekend hasn’t been decided yet either.

Currently, I am logged into PSN, looking at the store and see no details online of the Welcome back package.  Hopefully, this will soon change.

Tokyo, May 31, 2011 – Sony Corporation and Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) announced today that Sony Network Entertainment International (SNEI, the company) will fully restore all PlayStation®Network services in the Americas, Europe/PAL territories and Asia, excluding Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea by the end of this week. The company will also resume Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity™ for PlayStation®3 (PS3®), PSP® (PlayStation®Portable), VAIO and other PCs. Details for Japan, Hong Kong, and South Korea as well as the remaining services on Qriocity will be announced as they become available.

The company implemented considerable security enhancements to the network infrastructure, as well as conducted testing of the payment process and commerce functions. The first phase of PlayStation Network and Qriocity restoration began on May 15 in the Americas and Europe/PAL territories, followed by Japan and Asian countries and regions on May 28, when the company brought partial services back online. With this partial restoration users were able to access to some of the services such as online game play, account management, friend lists and chat functionality were restored. The full restoration of PlayStation Network as well as part of services to become available on Qriocity will include:

Full functionality on PlayStation®Store
In-game commerce
Ability to redeem vouchers and codes
Full functionality on Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for PS3, PSP, VAIO and other PCs
Full functionality on Media Go

Customers can now purchase and download games and video content from the PlayStation®Store on PS3 or PSP. In addition, consumers will have full access to Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity through PS3, PSP, VAIO and other PC’s. Service restoration of Video on Demand powered by Qriocity™ and Music Unlimited powered by Qriocity for a variety of network-enabled Sony devices will be announced later.

“We have been conducting additional testing and further security verification of our commerce functions in order to bring the PlayStation Network completely back online so that our fans can again enjoy the first class entertainment experience they have come to love,” said Kazuo Hirai, Executive Deputy President, Sony Corporation. “We appreciate the patience and support shown during this time.”

Super Meat Boy became available on Xbox Live Arcade last month. It’s coming to Windows later this month, Nintendo WiiWare sometime this year, and supposedly Linux and Mac at an unspecificed date in the future. But when is it coming to the PS3?

“Why wont this question die? We have answered it publicly at least 15 times but it just never ends. We can’t EVER do a PS3 version of Super Meat Boy because when we were going into negotiations with publishers, Sony was the only one that didn’t express much interest in the game. We assumed this meant they didn’t want the game, and [we] decided to sign with Nintendo and Microsoft.

“Our contracts excluded any release on PS3. We would have loved to do a PS3 version, but its not at all possible whatsoever now, so please stop asking about it.”

That’s what the developer has to say on the subject, so there you go. If all you own is a PS3, then you’re better off being a vegetarian. And I hope somebody takes that line out of context, because it would make so little sense it would be hilarious.
